  • Hi everyone,
    I camped on Cayo Costa for 3 days at the end of last year. I shelled my heart out and of course, filmed it all!
    This episode combines the remaining footage that I catalogued from this visit: shell collecting on the southern end of the island and on the beaches by the camp ground. Hope you enjoy!

    Hi from SC! Love the video. Great close up on the shells. I could literally take a 5 gallon bucket and just sit and fill it up in those shell piles! Maybe some kind of wagon to haul it back but it would be so worth it. Quite a few albino, cool. Thanks for sharing!

      Hello friend! One of the primary reasons I created this channel was to be able to share the feelings of tranquility that can be evoked by a stroll along a wonderful beach. Cayo Costa is especially meaningful to me - I have been visiting here once a year, for the past 9 years(with the exception of 2020). Camping here at the state park is a serene experience, and I hopeful that the state park and island will be able to recover fully from the recent hurricane.
      Thank you so much for coming along!

    This is my idea of a perfect day. A beautiful beach all to oneself with just the sound of the waves and lots of beautiful shells. It's convenient when they're small because they're not so heavy. They were also really clean and new looking. No green slime, barnacles etc. I love your videos and it makes me happy every time I see a new one. Rachelle, Australia 🐚

      Hi friend! This was actually filmed when I visited Cayo Costa last December. I often film content and upload it quite a while later.
      I too hope Florida will be able to recover fully and quickly! I was looking at the NOAA satellite imagery maps from Hurricane Ian, and it appears that Cayo Costa state park and campground didn't receive that much damage - not entirely sure though.

    Love your videos. And I’m obsessed with the name- Solace in Shelling. I’m from South Jersey and I go shelling way more than I’d like to admit 😬 I feel like if I was in Florida I would just get a broom and dustpan, it almost seems to easy down there. Don’t get me wrong, I would be coocoo looking through all those shells down there but There’s something about the fight to find good shells up North that makes it more fun. Just my opinion. 😊
    I went shelling lastnight and found a pair of dentures 😳 What’s the weirdest thing you have ever found?

      Hi friend! The west coast of Florida often has nice piles to sort through with many different species to be found, but there's something magical about searching for shells in the colder latitudes. I have quite a few adventures coming from Maine etc. - Thanks for watching and stay tuned!

    Really wish I were in Florida right now, I live in San Francisco and shells here aren't nearly as impressive. I got a taste of Caribbean shelling this past spring in the Bahamas (came back with a Netted Olive, Marginella, and Sea Biscuit) and every day since I've wanted to be back there. We do have a nice selection of somewhat rare top shells and abalones here though.

      Interesting question! I generally try my best to research the places I travel to ahead of time, but even the best planning can't predict impacts of external factors like weather, tides and luck, lol.
      It can be a bummer when you don't find something, but if you travel and search without expectations, it's so much better!

    • @solaceinshelling6552
      @solaceinshelling6552  ปีที่แล้ว

      When I was younger, and just beginning to collect shells, I would keep most anything that caught my eye. As I have built up my collection, I tend to only keep specimens that are in good condition, or unique(color, pattern etc.), or specimens that are uncommon/rare finds. I am a big proponent of ethical shell collecting, so I try to be mindful and modest about what comes home with me.

      Hi friend! There is no way to go directly from Sanibel Island to Cayo Costa - the only way to get to Cayo Costa is by boat. I usually take the camping boat shuttle service from Pine Island.

      If staying on Sanibel or Captiva they offer shelling excursions by boat taking off from the Captiva marina. It is a beautiful boat trip, both times we saw dolphins, lots of birds. I imagine it will be a while before that happens again sadly with the hurricane damage😢
