@@cawcawTVIn any case, people at the time didn't really hate the anime, they just hated the fans of the series that couldn't keep shut about it. Kinda the same as with Solo Leveling nowadays.
A big theme in this series is Virtual vs Real life and how they're related to each other. How people find their true selves within the virtual world, for better or worse.
Yeah I think SAO is a lot better if you view it in the lenses of a Sci-Fi about virtual reality. You have to remember that SAO was originally started in like 2001 or so, well before anything VR was accessible for a normal person and also before the numerous stories that took inspiration from other parts of SAO came out. I find a good chunk of the criticism comes from people calling it generic (I'd list some stuff here, but I don't want to discuss specifics of future content at this point), when SAO is pretty heavily involved in the origin / anime adaption of those other stories. SAO made it abundantly clear that light and web novels could become huge anime hits, and opened a lot of doors for those stories to get anime adaptations if not also being an extremely popular web / light novel series that inspired many authors to write their own stories (which often were decently derivative of SAO).
@@eclips_total2215 I never said you can’t dislike it. All I said was that it aired way back in 2012 and people are STILL treating it like it’s the spawn of the devil 12ish years later. People literally dedicate their lives to hate on it.
Well, regardless it is probably one of the most famous animes there is. The hate is a bit rediculous, but I do agree that there are some less than good writing in it. Anyway it is one of my first animes and probably my first isekai so I think about it fondly, even if it is far down the list of my favorite anime and even further down if I were to rate animes more objectively. 😁
@@eclips_total2215The thing is that this started as WN that was originally just one novel, which consisted of the beginning and end of Aincrad. It was only made for a writing contest, and Kawahara hadn't intended to make more novels to start with. After that, it was all side stories to expand on the setting and what was happening between the beginning and end, and this is all what S1 covered. Then Fairy Dance onward explored the aftermath of Aincrad, and all the emerging games and technology being influenced by what SAO set up. Culminating into Alicization and Unital Ring. I give the series flak for the way it started, but I don't think the actual concept of VR and Fulldive technologies was wasted, when it continues to be built upon throughout the series.
