  • Our dogs drive our passion for wild places and wild birds. Equally important for this group of Pennsylvania grouse hunters is the community that brings them together. In the highs of the good times and the lows of the hard times, friendship and dogs stand out.
See the world of hunting ruffed grouse and woodcock with flushing dogs. This film features Springer Spaniels and Labrador Retrievers in the Appalachia's of Pennsylvania.

I lost my 13 year old Griffon this past October. We hunted everywhere from Maine, U.P. of Michigan, Minnesota, South Dakota, Kansas, and Illinois. He was by my side from day one and went trout fishing with me in the off season. He was diagnosed with liver cancer and went down very quickly. We spent our last day going to all his favorite places and one last walk around the fields I first trained him. Miss you Magoo. RIP and wait for me.

These videos are a reminder to enjoy every minute we get with our pets. Sure they can drive you nuts at times, but the joy and bond you make with your pet is real, enjoy the time you have with them. Unfortunately, they always leave us quicker than we want!!!

I very rarely leave comments, but I wanted to thank you for making this video, and including the part about losing your Springer. I lost my 12 year old English Springer on August 4th of this past year; it was and still is the hardest thing I have gone through, even though it is inevitable and I knew it. Springers seem to become such a big part of your family "in a wonderful way" that I believe it sets them apart from other breeds. I am just starting to look into another English Springer, as you mentioned each dog has its own personality and you will never get an exact replacement, I think that is important to remember.

The curse of owning and loving dogs…You want to protect them from everything, and you cannot. I’ve lost a 4 month old puppy from a preventable incident, I’ve lost dogs to canine cancer, and I’ve lost dogs to old age. The losses haunt me…forever. Would I change what I’ve done? No. But the losses haunt me.

Dogs elevate the mere, minute act of shooting into hunting. They are what brings and immerses me into wild places. It would be a shallow experience without them. Thanks for making this film🐾🐾

I have had two Springer Spaniels the first I lost her when she was only 4 she was the apple of my eye. She was the best hunting buddy I have ever had. We got another a month after we lost the first one I know I was not replacing her but he filled that empty spot in my hart. He is ten now and we have not missed a grouse season here in Colorado yet. Every time I watch him work it makes me proud to be involved in their amazing but short lives. We hunt my first springers favorite place and I feel that in the shadows under a big spruce there she is coaching my current one on the tricks of hunting that Wiley grouse down. They are an amazing breed and even though you only have them for a short time they give you two life times of joy and memories.

Thank you. Flint was my Springer. A smaller dog with heart and guts. He worked the heaviest cover we could find. He was a specialist. We hunted the little patches of cover bypassed or ignored. Seldom brought down many birds but we talked about the ones we did all the way home. When I drive by those places today, I still talk with him about those times.

The springers are great I got mine as a gift from my wife and I knew nothing about training a springer but that little dog taught me how to hunt birds she finally passed after 12 yrs old, broke my heart still, not over it after 4 years. Losing the pheasant population is bad but keep in mind that pheasant were imported from China in the 1800's and is not a native species. You can improve habitat for the grouse. What I have in S.C. are a very few quail, woodcock and snipe.

We too had a bird dog named Timber. She was a GSP. She was 2 months shy of 16 years old. She was the most tenacious unrelenting force in the woods. A once in a lifetime bird dog. Her loss was so painful I could not speak her name for 2 years without breaking down.. yet we move forward, because the joy of sharing our home with dogs far out weighs the sadness. We too have a youtube video. A tribute to timber gsp. I hope you can find it. Enjoy. Keep some tissues handy. Good luck Frank F.

I have had 2 springers and hunted with them in the field. first dog was from a farm breading dogs for hunting. she was incredible in the field. could even work sheep like a sheep dog. second dog was from show stock. a loverly companion but did not have the skills for a good hunting dog. i had to teach her a lot that the first dog knew from instinct. my next dog another springer from hunting stock. treat your dog well and you have a faithfull companion for life.

In Idaho I tried hunting Franklin Ruff grouse with my Britney Spaniel. Grouse do not give off a smell that my dog could detect. I sold that dog to a man that hunted Hungarian Partridge. He said they didn’t miss a point. Best dog he had ever seen!🥰

I had a wonderful Springer that we found in Seward AK. She was a fantastic retriever with an excellent nose. I shot 27 different species of game bird over her all over the US. She wasn’t perfect for any one type of game bird hunting but she was perfect for everything. She only made it to 11 years old and losing her was painful in a way that only bird dog people would understand. I had a few Springers after her but she was the best. I’ll never forget the experiences we shared that wouldn’t have been possible without her. I guess it’s time for a puppy…..

I’ve loved dogs since I was a small boy ! The saying goes in England and we should know that “a lab is born half trained and a springer dies half trained” tbh I love hunting deer so my choice of dog is a Bavarian mountain hound but that’s me! Having said that I’ve managed to train her to retrieve.

I had a Springer spaniel that was named Nicky. she Had no hunting instincts what so ever but loved to go with me i could never leave her home. Ok this is where it gets crazy lol. Nicky mated with an Afghan six drop dead gorgeous puppies all black. One of her sons became an insanely good hunting dog. My friends would run their school trained dogs through a field and find nothing. i use to tell them ok watch this. I would let Chewy in that same field and most times he would put up birds. They would just shake their heads in disbelief.

I tell everyone to get pointers or labs. When they ask why, i smile and tell them, it leaves more birds for me? Make the obsolete dog owners mad! Ha,ha,ha. Pa had good peasants, grouse and woodcock hunting up until around 1980. Everything went away quickly. Woods got to big in northwest pa and just plain no habitat for peasants in southwest pa. After military service i stayed out here in the middle of the country where at the time was an awesome hunting state gor pheasant, quail, duck and yes, big deer.. if you know how to hunt wild birds on public land with springers, it's still ok. Springers shine after the dumb birds are gone. Had springers since I was 14 years old in Pa till now. Didn't have one for 10 years while serving. After everyone give up around mid December , me and the pac get to bird hunting. Awesome dogs. Howerver, you people stick with labs and pointers! The guy is totally right about the game commission not cutting big enough patches to make a difference. Game biologists screw up everything they touch. Wyoming, here and pa. They do screw up big time

Why do Americans always wear orange when they hunt? It seems to make the idea of camoflage clothing a bit redundant. Is it because you are on public land, and you have to be careful not to shoot each other? Sorry, I don't wish to sound dumb, it just is not not something we do here in the UK. When we shoot, we wear tweeds, or similar materials which blend into the surroundings. But almost all of the land we shoot on is private. And I agree, Springers are the greatest! Best wishes.

Orange for personal protection. This is during gun seasons for big game and also small game in a lot of states. When camo is needed - like bow hunting deer or turkey hunting, you don't have to wear orange.
