  • The maxillary first molar is the sixth tooth from the midline in the upper arch. It erupts at about the age of 6 to 7 years. The tooth is the largest of all teeth in the oral cavity. Except for its smaller gingivoocclusal dimension, the tooth is broader in the mesiodistal and the buccolingual dimensions. The tooth has got 5 cusps ,These cusps are the mesiobuccal, the mesiolingual, distobuccal, and the distolingual cusps. The tooth also has a fifth small and underdeveloped cusp known as the cusp of carabelli, and it’s a characteristic feature of the tooth.
The tooth has 3 roots and these three roots are the broad mesial root, the round and smaller distal root, and the largest lingual or palatal root shown here from the buccal and lingual aspects of the tooth.
Just like all other teeth maxillary first molars have got five surfaces, these five surfaces are the buccal, lingual, mesial, distal and occlusal surfaces.
Watch the video to learn all five surfaces of the tooth!
