Anatomy of Maxillary Premolars - Tooth Morphology

The maxillary first premolar is the fourth tooth and the second premolar is the fifth tooth in each arch from the midline. Both premolars have got two cusps, these are the buccal and the lingual cusps. The anatomy of the roots of first premolar is variable. The tooth might either have two roots or a single wide root. In 57 % of cases, the maxillary first premolar has got two roots. The maxillary second premolar has a single root that is usually longer than the root of the maxillary first premolar.
In today’s video we will first describe all surfaces of the maxillary first premolar and after that all those surfaces of the second premolar will be compared with the first premolar accordingly.
The five surfaces each premolar have are the buccal, lingual, mesial, distal, and occlusal surfaces. Let’s study each surface in detail.
