Bazan has spoken fondly of this show at least 3 or 4 of the dozen or so times I’ve seen him perform in the Twin Cities. He described it as maybe thee moment he realized they could make it as a band, because they sold something like 50 CDs after the show. He also said they booked it out of there after the show to get over to the 400 Bar, where Cat Power was performing on her Moon Pix tour. They were all blown away. And because of that detail, I can say with reasonable certainty that this show was on October 22 of 1998.
That's interesting. I, along with several of my friends, bought "It's Hard to Find a Friend" after they finished their set. It was one of the few CDs that we all owned, which is a testament to how blown away we all were (typically, being the poor and stingy college students we were, one person would buy a band's CD and the rest of us would borrow it somewhere down the line). I wish I had known about the Cat Power show, though (although 400 Bar was always 21+ if I remember correctly, and I was only 20 at the time).

I can't recall their names. But it's who he played with live when touring for It's Hard to Find a Friend. I lived in Seattle when David/ Pedro first started playing. Best of Times
this is a such great performance! so many of these songs sound so close to the recorded version, but has that great live energy! Dave's voice is in great form as well!
I almost envy you, I still remember the first time I heard them and fell in love immediately. Track down the live tour album with the randy Newman song political science, probably one of my favorite things ever
The album CONTROL was a MAJOR turning point. It's the album that got him kicked out of all the Christian book stores and one of my favorite turns in an artist and just music in general. All my friends in the early-mid aughts were just as receptive to his vision.
Thank you soooooooooooooooo much whoever is releasing all of this awesome old Pedro footage finally...teared up to Criticism as Inspiration just now :(
What is it about music from this time? I’m sure a big part is that I was still young, and insanely into music, but it’s not like my ears stopped working… I look up music I’d never heard from this time period and still love it, but somewhere around the early 2000’s (unless the band was formed before then, or had members from other bands I liked) I just can’t feel anything when I hear newer music! It just lacks an emotional aspect, or soul, or something!
This awesome. Thanks for sharing. Was this at the corner of Larpenteur and Snelling? I remember they had a show there (in ‘98) that I didn’t get to and have regretted it for all these years. Saw them the next spring at Foxfire Coffee Lounge.
Hopefully someone with a better memory can recall their names, but a little trivia - Dave mentioned that the drummer just learned how to play drums about a month before this tour started.
David Bazan is one of the most underrated American songwriters of all time.
Still on the top 1% of what TH-cam releases in 2023, what a great David we have!

Holy cow, Dave. Love this. Bad Diary Days is one of my fav Pedro songs. Amazing to see it so close to its inception.
Oooh, this is gonna hurt.
What a message in a bottle from the past, thank you for sharing.

Thanks for sharing. This is so raw. I found this band late and now I'm catching up on all things Pedro the Lion.
Hope you got some time. Dave rules

It's been a long time, but I'm pretty sure it was located on Larpenteur.
Yes, it was on Larp and Snelling, next to a bowling alley in a now-defunct strip mall that is now apartments/condos.
If this is only a test i hope that im passing...
Does anybody know the date that this show took place on? Like, the day and the month?
I don't remember the exact date, but I'm pretty sure it was around Christmas time...
@@lamestream Thank you for your reply! I really appreciate it! 🙂

Boots and cats with brand new….
Who is in this lineup?

Josh Golden on bass, Ben Brubaker on drums
