This is so good, I have heard his name thrown around in my group of friends but this is the first time I've had a chance to hear him. To me, it seems like he's taken just enough style from the alternative genre of the nineties and brought it to the present with just enough charisma to pull it off.
Agreed! May be my favorite song of his of all time. (And I love many of them!) The lyrics are timeless....and almost eerie how they capture the strange times our country (USA) has been through, even though it came out a few years before all of that.
When this album came out, I don't think I really *got* it. It's more understated and less on the nose than a Curse Your Branches or Pedro concept album, but over time I've realized that it's one of the most mature, thoughtful, and prescient albums I've ever heard. Seems like a lot of fans had that experience, it was always going to be a challenge to follow up an album like CYB, and I think it got much less press and exposure than the previous, but nowadays it's his most popular solo album (on Spotify at least). Also mind blowing how much MORE relevant songs like Wolves At The Door, People, and Strange Negotiations became during the Trump administration than they were at the time this album was released. "John Henry dies in a tunnel, hammer in his hand. Steam drill lives on to make fools of every man." Yeah, that tracks.
It's maybe not my favorite either, but it's definitely a hell of a thesis for a post-Evangelical first solo full length, and even though it wasn't a huge success, it was really significant in the hyper-literary-slightly-melodramatic indie/folk/emo scene of the late '00s (Brand New, Kevin Devine, Manchester Orchestra, etc). It's tough because there aren't a ton of reviews from the time, but everyone I knew in the singer-songwriter scene was like "Bazan is the artist that all these guys are trying to be". Typing that all out made me really wish the white dude with an acoustic guitar and a journalism degree was still a relevant genre. @@williambartholmey5946
@@MeatSnax Hey, man, you can't overpraise Bazan in my book. He's one of my favorites, I just happen to love his more electronic tunes most of all. That first track on Curse Your Branches is an all-timer though.
wha wha wha!?!?!? the drummer is definitely destroying it. also, i can't stop listening to "people". i'am starting to learn it and will be playing it at open mic as soon as i finish. pow! right in the kisser!
Most(All) of his stuff is very autobiographical. The songs about his struggle with religion, his family and alcoholism. When you listen to his older pedro the lion albums and then this new work you can hear the same themes coming back and evolving. Same themes but different angles.
What's going on with Dave's guitar? Looks like an American Tele with P90s? Did he swap those out himself or is there an American Tele that comes with P90s? I love the sound.
@adamthreefifteen LOL. If the drummer is "DESTROYING" it by adding a little bit more feel to it, then David is definitely doing more damage by playing the solos. Come on, would it hurt to just say "Yeah, well I like the album version better"?
+thnknde The bass player is Andy Fitts and the drummer is Alex Westcoat... Seeing as it's been almost a year, you've probably already figured this out. Haha
I want to have a conversation with you, but it seems like your mind is already made up. "Most" is not the same thing as "all." "It's hard to find a friend" seems to be much more autobiographical than an album like "Options" or "Strange Negotiations." But we have to separate "lyrics that comes from a personal place" versus "lyrics that are an autobiographical story." So the "I" in the song is not necessarily Bazan himself, but rather someone he is addressing.
I've watched this vid so many times.
Between this and the Alone at the Microphone DVD my youtube suggestions are heavily targeted toward these feels.
I've watched it so many times that I anticipate David's unpredictable eyebrow movements at the right times,
Man, I didn't think Eating Paper could sound any better than it does on the album, but was I ever wrong.
Here I thought he was literally eating paper, and was really curious how one would integrate that into a performance.
The key change is wicked, he’s a genius
I feel so lucky to been shown David Bazaan.
6 yrs passed still one of my favorite vids on youtube
another 6 years have passed and it still is one of my favorite vids on youtube
@@R0undSquar3thank you. See you guys in 6 years
Every time I listen to this album i feel like crying because it's so damn good!!!
saw this performance when they first posted it. brought me back to bazans work. one of my favorites, always.
you should see the smile on my year-old son every time I play this one, priceless...
What a master songwriter. Always loved David Bazan, always loved Pedro the Lion. Always will!
David Bazzan is a fantastic man
Im really glad to see David Bazan killin it on KEXP. I've been a fan for so long.

This was so good. So perfect.
My confession. I listen to kexpradio to discover new music. Shhh. Love it.

The drum lines in Eating Paper, damn!
Props to the production team on this video. Really fantastic quality. Only enhanced an already great performance.
If there is a heaven, and David Bazan isn't in it, I don't want to go there.
same
I love this woman who's interviewing him. Such a seemingly wholesome woman.
Same here. I cry every time.
People, so lovely. I saw people, and you were people... amazing!!!
Thanks
Piotr Bazan
thanks to KEXP for the videos!
drumming with authority. fuggin love it.
Awesome video!!! Love bazan!
Awesome! Thanks for posting though. His music touched my soul specially the last one.
thank you very much for this video.
People has one of the best chorus parts imo. Just the way it hits and those lyrics. Damn
People keep commenting on Eating Paper or Strange Negotiations... I think People is the best performance here.
Agreed! May be my favorite song of his of all time. (And I love many of them!) The lyrics are timeless....and almost eerie how they capture the strange times our country (USA) has been through, even though it came out a few years before all of that.
Fantastic.
David Bazan sounds great live! he doesn't use any auto tune like most artist

"John Henry dies in a tunnel, hammer in his hand. Steam drill lives on to make fools of every man."
Yeah, that tracks.
I like Strange Negotiations, Blanco, Care, and the Headphones album all better than Curse Your Branches.
The drummer earned his paycheck that day.
Amazing.
Amazing
That last song was incredible. Way better than the album version.
great looking video.. and enjoyed seeing bazan kick'n the universes ass as usual
this is great
So good
Looking forward to the living room show in Tucson in Sept. ..just got tix =)
Kevin Suggs is the man.
couldn't agree more
Of course he plays a Telecaster. All of the great ones do.
This band is fucking incredible
I totally agree @scooberthemanager this album makes me feel great! I love it!!
Damn you David Bazan. I wish I didn't love your heartbreaking words so much..
wha wha wha!?!?!? the drummer is definitely destroying it. also, i can't stop listening to "people". i'am starting to learn it and will be playing it at open mic as soon as i finish. pow! right in the kisser!
I agree about the drummer, its weird because he doesn't look strange on other videos. I tried to post an example but youtube won't let me.
Wow.
Most(All) of his stuff is very autobiographical. The songs about his struggle with religion, his family and alcoholism. When you listen to his older pedro the lion albums and then this new work you can hear the same themes coming back and evolving. Same themes but different angles.
Bazan is so underrated. But then again if he was would I be so into him?
Those rhythms are super catchy and innovative, some of it reminds me of the drum work from Matt Hayward (Band of Skulls)
21:03 - 21:50 EPIC
Excellent mix and production in general. Very well done. How refreshing. So many terrible radio show mixes out there.
Brilliant. 🐷oink
Pozdrowienia od Piotra Bazana z Grimsby
What's going on with Dave's guitar? Looks like an American Tele with P90s? Did he swap those out himself or is there an American Tele that comes with P90s? I love the sound.
Can anyone tell me what instrument Dave is playing to keep time with his foot here??? They show it a few times in eating paper, the first song.
Did you notice that they sign the headphones? KEEEEXP.
Anyone have any information on the kit Alex is using? Drums sound amazing.
The shells look like mid 60's Ludwigs, maybe early 70's. No idea of the snare, although it could be matching.
+R Michael Stinson Who is that on drums? Really love his playing.
+Andrew Lewis Alex Westcoat is his name!
16:35
Dave is the best
what would i do with out kexp?? good thing i wont ever have to know.
@neuroticcakes I used "destroying it" ironically. lulz. awesome sn.
What do I have to do to play on Kexp? Any one know?
I sorta feel like he's channeling a little of Springsteen and a little of Mellencamp. Something I never thought I'd say.
Does anyone know what tuning he is using on his guitar or is it standard E
Pretty sure it's on standard E, if you still care.
Jacob Trueman I still do haha thanks!
proof that there's other things on youtube than Chocolate Rain.
@adamthreefifteen LOL. If the drummer is "DESTROYING" it by adding a little bit more feel to it, then David is definitely doing more damage by playing the solos. Come on, would it hurt to just say "Yeah, well I like the album version better"?
Who are the people playing with Bazan in this video? I can't figure it out.
+thnknde The bass player is Andy Fitts and the drummer is Alex Westcoat... Seeing as it's been almost a year, you've probably already figured this out. Haha
His drummer fucking cracks me up. So good, though.
thats because David Bazan is Pedro the Lion.....
Man...Alex has suck amazing drum lines
Such an amazing drummer. The whole Live At Electrical Audio album is my favorite drum performance of all time.
Super gross that an ad plays right in the middle of "People"

Maybe all the music isn't autobiographical?
?...What?
this was amazing. i'm still not a fan of "people" though.
sounds similar to pedro the lion
Good one
dallas green brought me here
Are you aware he's no longer a Christian?
Zitala
a band of MEN
@himynameisjohn It's way better on the album.
