This has been a very entertaining and very informative video! I really enjoy the fact that you took your time collecting information throughout several weeks to get a video produced that contained step by step instructions and a time-lapse of how to propagate succulents.
You talking to your plants like they are the most precious thing on earth makes want to grow a succulent too! might as well watch your other vids hehe < 333
That one you said isn't doing well & ready for propagation is actually doing fine, it's just "stretching" for light. Maybe try a different window & rotate it to get light evenly & the leaves with grow closer together. 👍🏼 Love your garden. 😊👌🏼
Thank you for this video! I just started my garden and propagating. I’ve read a couple blog posts but yours is the only video that I feel explained the timing well! It’s been a week and I haven’t see any growth and I couldn’t tell if I should be nervous but this really helped me!
Thank you so much for posting this! I got a succulent plant on clearance because half of it was rotting. It had a couple babies I pulled off but there were a bunch of the leaves that were still decent looking. I put them on some soil like you show and now I am waiting. I can't wait to see the little roots emerge!
you probably overwatered yours. you only need to water succulents about once a month, and make sure they drain fully. it'll feel like they are going to die because you aren't watering them, but remember, succulents are from the desert. they don't need to be watered hardly at all
*hmm... never happened to me I live in southern California so its dry and hot. So when i tried it callused in about a week and i got roots but i accidentally watered it a lot and ended yp rotting*
Air drying is the best. Put your succulent leaves on a dry surface and keep it out of direct sunlight. Patience is virtue becausez it takes 1-2 or 3 weeks even a month.
Hey Jordan! I just found your channel and subscribed. I searched "how to plant propagated succulents" and this video was the first one to come up. I love this video however I have to disagree with something you said. You said that succulents don't die and we can't kill them.... something along those lines. I HIGHLY disagree (in a joking manner). I started getting into succulents and air plants a few years ago and I have killed many succulents in this time, I've killed air plants too. Either I watered too much, not enough, not enough sunlight or too much sunlight. 😔 I'd like to think that I've found the balance between water and light throughout my adventures and mass genocides of succulents. GREAT video and now I'm off to watch part 2! 🖒
Do you think those terra cotta pots are the best for succulents? Other plants may not like them because they pull water away from the soil, but since succulents don't like there roots wet, that might be best or at least make sure you have a drainage hole. You're information is valuable. Thank you!
I had a beautiful succulent years ago that I cannot find again anywhere. I don't even remember it's specific name. It lasted me over a decade and grew so many "babies" that I started propagating and selling them. Then I got sick and couldn't take care of my plants that well anymore. I had 5 different containers with my favorite succulent and they all died. I never looked into how to properly propagate them before so I never knew they could grow from just the leaves (I thought it had to be from stems only) and I didn't know they had to be callused over when you do. Even though it's too late for that particular one, at least now I know all of this info for the new ones I've started growing. :)
So i just started getting succulents and one i had gotten had rocks glued to the top, so the water would just sit on top, i took them off and noticed some of the fallen leaves have started sprouting and one has a new little tiny plant! so cool!
omgosh i love your enthusiasm & energy.....i've subscribed and can't wait to watch all your veggies and succulents grow, grow, grow......i have several jades and a few other succulents that i love propagating, but never knew about letting the leaves grow a callous first, so thanks for that info.....you're a total cutie pie, keep up the good work!! (i'm a 53-yr-old woman, so don't take that in a creepy way lol)
I just got myself an Aloe Vera and an Aloe Porcupine. I can't wait to try this. It is spring here in Melbourne Australia so let the garden season begin
Hi there, I have a question. A couple days/weeks ago I removed part of a leaf of my Crassula arborescens subsp. undulatifolia because it was half-broken off. I left it on my balcony in sort of a bucket and discovered today that it is actually building out roots. Same with another partial leaf that had come off. Now is there any chance propagation will actually work with those partial leaves? I mean if they're building roots that must mean it is working, right?
***** Okay, I'll report back! So far I've laid them flat on soil and I am spraying them (like you showed in the video) every day with a fine spray bottle. And several roots are shooting out. Wish me luck!
Hi there, a month ago I was asking about my partial leaves. Turns out all three are making a new plant! They're getting bigger and bigger and it's such a joy to see.
@@louibeans Thanks for the update! As you found out, yes, even damaged leaves can be propagated as long as there is no damage to the place where they were originally attached to the mama plant. I've grown a completely new plant from less than half of a leaf!
Awesome! I got my first succulents a month or so ago and one isn't doing too hot so I'm going to propagate that one and give the babies to my friends once they're big enough. Can't wait to see the next update!
I use a 50% succulent and Cactus soil about 40% Coco Loco potting soil (which is really rich in organic compost in nutrients plants need to grow so I don't have to worry about fertilizer too much, I use the same Coco Loco potting soil, straight for my veggie garden and other house plants as well) and 10% perlite. Sometimes I use less coco loco potting soil and more perlite, but the same percentage of cactus soil. It depends what the plant needs and if it's susceptible to over-watering then I add more perlite.
Awesome video; I began succulenting in April. I stuck my leaves in soil as soon as the leaves began to grow and got a mass of root with no new plants yet. I am about to get my "succulent" on. thanks!
For the stump one, you'd normally want to cut it shorter so the new succulent would start growing from the bottom and wouldn't need separation. However, I kinda like the look of the succulents growing on the tall stem, so I sometimes like to leave it long just to get that look in the pot. I probably would never make a terrarium or something out with it though.
I am confused about what to do after you get tiny little plants growing out of the leaves? The first one I pulled off and planted in the soil by itself, but it doesn't seem to be growing so I think I killed it. Now I am trying to plant the roots of the baby plants in the soil while keeping the mother leaf attached, but that is awkward since the roots are growing in the air and the leaf is curled (making it difficult to get the roots in the soil). My third idea is to bury the mother leaf deep in the soil, keeping the attached baby plant above the soil with its roots in the soil. Any suggestions? Thanks
You have to wait for the leaf to shrivel up and die off. The baby plant is getting all the energy from the leaf till then. Don't worry too much about the roots. As long as the environment is not too dry or hot, the leaves get the moisture from the air and like I said, they get the nutrients from the leaf, they don't need soil till the leaf starts dying off.
@@jelatinosa You can wait for the mother leaf to shrivel up and die, but sometimes that never happens. I have many plants that I started by placing a single leaf in it's own pot and let grow and root itself naturally. It also helps to flip the leaf upside down the opposite way it was growing on the plant originally that way the roots are touching the soil and can grow down and the baby plant up. To answer the original question: Once you have a little pup and roots you can take that leaf and place it in a 2 in or larger starter pot (depending on leaf size) with the roots touching the dirt. I make sure the soil is just barely damp and don't water it for the first week. You can also let it continue to grow in the soil you placed it on originally and let it root naturally and then once the baby plant gets a bit bigger you just dig it up and transplant it into a pot. I use a plastic fork to carefully transplant my baby succ's and cactus once they have developed a strong root system. There are so many different ways to do this, these methods always work for me. Don't pluck the baby plant from the mama leaf though!
@@jamiefoley8756 that was my point, not to separate the baby from the the mother leaf. If she wants to get rid of the leaf she will have to wait for it to die off as it will eventually always do. It might take a while but, it will die off eventually.
this video was real fun and informative. Love your personality! But homegirl, please work on the camera movement LOL there's too much moving around & is distracting. but can't wait to see part 2!
I got a succulent a couple months ago that was slowly dying from the day she came home with me, I wanted to repot her and she just fell out of her spot, the stem was so so dry and just dead that some leaves had already started growing new roots, so I plucked most leaves off and as somebody who usually only has leafy plants I obviously put them in water.. im so glad I saw your video by chance, they've been in water less than a day so lets just hope that didnt kill them!

What folks dont tell you,,is it also depends on where U live too...See if U live in the deepsouth, U can not spray succulents daily or even water wkly (esp during summer)... The humidity is so high' youll rot your succlnts on the second watering.... Heck' theres 90% moisture in the air..
make sure you aren't overwatering! succulents only need to be watered about once a month. remember, they are from deserts. they don't need to be watered once a week
probably not, because this would damage the plant and most likely make them unusable. You may be able to put them in a ziplock bag and keep them out of direct sunlight. Tip, if moisture seems to form on the bag inside with the plant, don't panic. This is completely natural as long as there isn't too much, and isn't molding your plants.

I’m having a go at propagating a succulent for the first time it looks so cool. I will be documenting the progress on my channel. Wish me luck!
Very positive result
I propagated my old succulents and they were very successful plants they have grown very well
+Luna Knight nice!
"succulents don't die"
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG
sacybear how much do you water, like how often. And how much sunlight?
Overwatering
@@deejeff8846 I've tried both methods. No watering and then light water and I STILL keep killin them
you probably overwatered yours. you only need to water succulents about once a month, and make sure they drain fully. it'll feel like they are going to die because you aren't watering them, but remember, succulents are from the desert. they don't need to be watered hardly at all
Newbie in the house! In addition to your amazing knowledge, your voice is calming!
Yes succulents do die from overwatering.
With nothing but dead mush.
so true. the first succulent i ever had, (2 years ago) i watered once a week. now i water the ones i have once a month or less
The jade leaf I found in my elephant bush just started growing roots after 3 weeks, I am so excited! I have it in a snapple cap and I mist it.
every time I try to let the leaves dry out and callus over it ends up just rotting and dies completely
Golden Fitness17 same!!!! I stuck a couple in the dirt right after plucking and they grew from the dirt but the ones I let dry all died
Same. It makes me crazy!
That may mean the end of the stem broke off, rather than pulled away fully/properly from the stem
*hmm... never happened to me I live in southern California so its dry and hot. So when i tried it callused in about a week and i got roots but i accidentally watered it a lot and ended yp rotting*
Air drying is the best. Put your succulent leaves on a dry surface and keep it out of direct sunlight. Patience is virtue becausez it takes 1-2 or 3 weeks even a month.
just started propagating my succulent, this video is really of great help, thanks and more power
+Jonevir Montealto awesome!
getting excited everyday to see succulents growing from leaves
At 6:08 what type of succulent is that? My friend gave me one and I have no clue what it is😅
Thank you for sharing this great how to on propagating Suculants, it had been so helpful to me!
My life in a nutshell:
“Wow, it’s growing a bit! I can see the-“
*pulls growing leaves off*
“ _oh_ “
I have watched every video and read every blog article there is about propagation and this has been my favourite. Great job
+Sarah Elizabeth aww, Sarah you're so nice!!!
So i just started getting succulents and one i had gotten had rocks glued to the top, so the water would just sit on top, i took them off and noticed some of the fallen leaves have started sprouting and one has a new little tiny plant! so cool!
This video is awesome with lots of info but STAND STILL!!
So, I just started growing succulents and one of them began to dying. This saved my plant and me! Thank you so much!
i have had no success with doing this.. for yrs... lol... but i will try this... thank you
Thank you! yes at the beginning I almost turned it off because of the movement, but I enjoyed your video thanks for the tips and insight :)
"It's just growin' like a CRAAAZY plant!"
I’m getting a very Pauley shore in the army now vibe lol
omgosh i love your enthusiasm & energy.....i've subscribed and can't wait to watch all your veggies and succulents grow, grow, grow......i have several jades and a few other succulents that i love propagating, but never knew about letting the leaves grow a callous first, so thanks for that info.....you're a total cutie pie, keep up the good work!! (i'm a 53-yr-old woman, so don't take that in a creepy way lol)
+Shannon Smith thanks for your sweet comment Shannon! I recently got jades too! Love them!!!!!
Really good informative channel very informative thanks its change my life fully.
+Svenja M. I'd say if it is growing roots then yes. But idk for sure. Just treat it as though it will work and see what happens :)
Pls tell me abt the soil media
I am about to get my "succulent" on. thanks!
My mother leaves always dry out and die before the new plants are established
Thanks
I'd like to see the answer to that question too
You have to wait for the leaf to shrivel up and die off.
To answer the original question:
Once you have a little pup and roots you can take that leaf and place it in a 2 in or larger starter pot (depending on leaf size) with the roots touching the dirt.
Your excitement made me so happy!!!
this video was real fun and informative.
First of all - can't believe this video hit 1,000,000 views! Makes me wish I would have tried a little harder on it lol. Anyway - I need to tell you guys about the best GROW LIGHT ever. Does it matter what kind of soil you use for propogating?
What folks dont tell you,,is it also depends on where U live too...See if U live in the deepsouth, U can not spray succulents daily or even water wkly (esp during summer)... The humidity is so high' youll rot your succlnts on the second watering.... Heck' theres 90% moisture in the air..
5:27 "succulents don´t die guys", meanwhile I´m whatching this video because I´m pretty sure mine will die in a couple of days lol
Did it ever die then?🧍🏻♀️
@@shasha3320 well, yes... but I've successfully propagated many succulents after that one xd
make sure you aren't overwatering! succulents only need to be watered about once a month. remember, they are from deserts. they don't need to be watered once a week
Great cactus propagating
Can I freeze the leaves for later?
probably not, because this would damage the plant and most likely make them unusable. You may be able to put them in a ziplock bag and keep them out of direct sunlight. Tip, if moisture seems to form on the bag inside with the plant, don't panic. This is completely natural as long as there isn't too much, and isn't molding your plants.
Hey there! I was so excited to find this video and after listening to it, it seems so informative. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! However, I’m a visual/tactile learner and couldn’t get through a minute of the shake. Do you have another video posted with similar information and walkthrough? I’m excited to hear from you!
