I've always used my phone or steam deck for emulation up to ps2, but a dedicated device is enticing to save battery life for other games on my other systems. And an all in one place for all my roms would be nice.
I bought an Odin 2 for this reason. I wasn’t ever using my steam deck for emulation because I felt like I should be playing the games I paid for on it. Having a device dedicated to nothing but emulation is pretty nice. If one battery is low the other one is usually fully charged also so I don’t really worry about keeping my steam deck topped off at all times like I used to.
They really did well with this one. It's still not as powerful as I want, but it does look great. I'm also just glad they took off that obnoxious bezel branding and made the device generally not look as cheap as previous versions.
The speaker design is actually genius because they are aimed into the palms of your hands as you play, bouncing sound back toward you. It's like cupping your hand around your phone's speaker when watching videos. Very clever.
@ThePhawx holy shit, you soul read and knew exactly what Microsoft was going to do and announce for their "business podcast". Solid educated guess on your part on the Nerdnest podcast at 59:00. I had the same feeling, since they need those boxes to sell gamepass and PC has hit saturation All I can say, is they need a rdna4 handheld. They can fill a niche, that is not really even a niche. Looking at the handheld market and how switches/portable PC's sell, a strong competitor with commitment that owns the OS will probably make handheld PCs mainstream.
You should address the L2/R2 trigger spring issues more in depth in my opinion it’s a very real issue. I ordered my replacement springs because I now know it’s is very likely to be an issue with mine.
@@shilomarie1452 indeed but people need to be aware that pre ordered or like me who bought from a third party in my case eBay who have no idea which one they got. I think it’s solid advice to just have it be a known issue for now that has a simple fix and to be prepared if you didn’t order direct from them after that date that you have a very high likelihood of your triggers possibly failing.
All they need to do now is upgrade the cpu and keep that sweet pocketable form factor. If it was as powerful as the odin 2 (and instead used a linux based platform rather than android), it'd be perfect.
I get pretty naff battery life from my unit, maybe this screen is the culprit? Hopefully a solution is found because it's the one big issue I have with the device so far, everything else on it has been pretty great
The thing I HATE about new handhelds is the wait time. That’s why I love when they’re finally sold on Amazon with the Prime 2 day. Can’t imagine myself spending that much money to wait that long for something
I have a question.. for an ROG Ally, I have data on my old ssd card that I want to transfer to my new ssd card, is it possible to do that without cloning it? Since I don’t know how to clone the ssd card.
You just need to plug your ssd card into an ssd card reader and plug the card reader into your computer. Copy all the files & folders you want into a folder on your computer. Unplug the card reader from your computer. Put the new ssd card into the card reader. Plug the card reader back into your computer. Then copy all your saved files and folders onto the new ssd card.
Thanks for actually mentioning the screen and trigger concerns. My only issue is that Retroid asks the customer to fix the device themselves, and I know a lot of people are not comfortable with that. For 200$+, I personally expect better. I guess I still respect them for doing something to address the problem, but I still wish they would do better.
I saw you had Roblox on there. Does it run well? I own a steam deck and I love it for pc games and emulation, but it’s kind of a bummer that it can’t run games like Genshin Impact and Roblox. Tbh I might buy this so I can have a more portable emulation device and finally be able to play these mobile games with a controller.
I hadn't heard about the screen response times before, so that's a bit concerning for me since my RP4 pro is already crossing the ocean, but I'll see how it is when I actually get my hands on it There's an anbernic handheld that came out recently with an AMOLED screen, but specced like the non-pro RP4, and priced between them at $175 I believe... buyers remorse kicking in a little but we'll see lmao
Sorry, a bit stupid question but: is it good enough for remote gaming at home? Or better to buy Logitech device for that because of screen size or any other thing? Could you compare both if possible, please? I have steam deck but it is quite heavy and a bit uncomfortable to play like that. I hope you got the point :)
Anbernic has the new RG556 which is probably the only other device in this size category which can play some GameCube and PS2 games. There are reviews justv starting to come out for the RG556. It's a little bigger and slightly slower than the Retroid, but also slightly cheaper. The Ayn Odin 2 is more powerful, but also more expensive and not quite pocketable. There are plenty of reviews already out there for the Odin 2 and Retroid 4.
That's why you should just watch both! The Phawx for hardware and what the system can do (silicon/OS wise), Russ for how the system feels and what it's like to use(Software+Controls). Both are pretty important if you ask me! I'm glad they know each-other and complement each-other so well!
This is a cool device if it wasn't for Retroid's shitty QC on it. You can't treat customers as beta testers for all the mechanical problems of this device. Shills always refuse to call retroid out for this.
@@Guitario666 I honestly don't know of a hardware company that didn't mess up their initial release. They always come with some problems at first and if the company is serious about their brand they take care of it and fine tune whatever needs to be fine tuned.
This scriped video sounds so unnatural on you. I definitely think it's better when you let yourself fluid, or at least need some practice there. Great video tho. Might gonna get one to sneak it during my job, any recommendation for something discreet?
Respect the review. I'll wait for Retroid 5 EX Pro Plus Alpha which will be announced in three to six months lol. The talk about build quality is a deal breaker for me. You did not mention their frontend which is mostly ass. Out of the box experience is also important if I am paying a premium. 200 USD/GBP is a big deal for me and if ifs not that much better than my phone in terms of frontend/OS then it really puts me off. Appreciate its beyond the scope of the review but handheld emulation is a saturated market. This really needed to do WAAAY more. Good but not worth 200 USD/GBP in my opinion. Huge respect and appreciate the vids.
Yo the thumbnail to video transition is nuts gg bro
This needs more attention
Had to see it again at least 3 times. So smooth.
i mean u literally just make a thumbnail of whatever the video starts as, quite easy to do
@@melxb you clearly dont create content lmao
@@melxb Right, but it's not that it's difficult, it's that we don't usually see youtubers taking advantage of this.

Fantastic Review, thanks so much.
So I’m hearing from the comment sections rather than from reviewers that the battery takes a huge L.
Love it, can't believe that battery life!
Thank you for this review
Bro your shirts always make me laugh. Keep it up.
Also do you still use the win max 2 as your main driver?
He has confirmed that a few times in the nerd nest podcast.
Can you do a review of Pimax Portal ?? And see how long the battery lasts?
Thanks! And you look better and healther

Hello! Have you noticed any kind of latency with controls? Any kind of delay at all?
the overuse of words such as 'signaling', 'showcasing', 'underscoring', REALLY makes it sound like chatgpt wrote this lol
That thumbnail transition is slick
What were the settings and brightness on the ps1 battery test?
What settings did you have for battery tests? Brightness level, performance mode, fan, wifi? BT?

To be fair they were fixed from the end of January on at the factory.

Nice, also got the pro, its like a snapdragon 845 which is great for emulation

I'd still go for odin 2 for switch emulation. the form factor is interesting though.
would you say it's the best buy for under $200?
Great job

Did your unit pass the vsynctester site 's test?
None of the 4/pros pass the vsynctester test, it's a firmware issue. You can even seen in Contra at 6:09 that the scrolling judders.

Unplug the card reader from your computer. Put the new ssd card into the card reader. Plug the card reader back into your computer. Then copy all your saved files and folders onto the new ssd card.

Do the games come pre installed
No, you have to get the game ROM files elsewhere.
Would be nice to have a handheld like this with an OLED screen

Mmm if the next model will remove the ghosting and improve something for the ps2 performance we might have the best affordable portable device.
