Good points. Character development in the martial arts has taken a back seat to surface level training and money. Learning to take responsibility for your life should be foundational to a students training. But if you look across the landscape of what's being promoted to the public as "martial arts" it's anything but that. A me first, bully mentality is what's popular. Even in some traditional schools.

Thank you Calandra Sensei for this excellent video that exposes a sad fact... Jealousy is indeed plaguing the world of Karate. If envy is a more "animalistic and biological response" [That consists of wanting good things that someone else has], jealousy on the contrary, is a mental flaw and can become a true pathology. Jealousy is about taking away from someone or destroying what the psychopath feels to be too good for you... It is about fear and everything dictated by fear can only be negative. From the moment you are exposed publicly, you are facing all sorts of jealous and unhappy souls. We would expect that Karateka [and especially people claiming to be "Masters"(!)] would not be concerned by jealousy, but Karate is unfortunately not a passport for wisdom and to subdue passions. Your connection to Okinawa is probably adding up to the cause and I am sad to say "welcome to the Club"! Personally, I have never taught Karate and I only claim to be a 3rd Dan (after 51 years of practice), but writing about Karate and living in Okinawa is making many people unhappy and sometimes in a rage...! I also read that I am a fake, that the photos of my articles are photoshopped, that I write mistakes, I would be wrong with my Japanese, etc... Since I am not creating anything and I only report from the "horse's mouth", certains understand they cannot attack my work, but persist by accusing me to only interview fake Sensei... They cannot see they are insulting Okinawa Sensei... See, we can never win with such badly intentioned people. You seem to be only attacked from people from your country and it is generally the case. Being a bi-national, I therefore get the storm from my 2 countries. I have excellent feedback from the entire world since I write in 3 or even 4 languages. I noticed that Africans, South Americans and oriental Karateka are the most polite and respectful and I hope you can reach out to those. My conclusion is that jealousy is often caused by identification. That is why your enemies are usually from your culture, your age group, your rank, etc... The solution is exactly as you say; "work harder"! But it will not come from them, because they are basically fearful and lazy to do that extra load of work to equal you. So you must work harder and advance to further increase the distance between you and them... Then, no more identification will be possible and they will understand. You might be surprised to see some coming back to you in addition of the many wonderful "Bros" you have made throughout the world. Happy New Year Calandra Sensei🙏 良いお年をお迎え下さい

At 14:19 & 14:22, what is moroshi kobodo? I have never heard that word before. By any chance if not the same thing, do you get into the jitsu?
If a stupid question excuse me, where I ask!
Who did give you rank? Angi Uezu trained directly under his father in law as I understand it!

@@Noone-rt6pw it’s Matayoshi Kobudo. My rank comes from Tatsuo Shimabuku’s son, Kichiro Shimabuku.

One of your posters in the comment section used jealousy and envy incorrectly. He or she more or less confused the 2 but at least that poster didn't think the 2 were the same as most Americans do.
For most my life I used the words incorrectly. One can Google up how the 2 words differ from each other if they want.
But I will briefly say this, and I have this video paused at the 1:34 mark, jealousy is word originally meant to express the emotions that arise inside of a person to *guard* what *they have.*
I suppose, like eating, jealousy can be properly ordered or be disordered.
Envy is always disordered. Envy involves an emotion and belief that to raise one's self up they must take away *a good* another person has. Example, if a woman is very beautiful (a good) an envious woman may carry out an act that disfigures her face or attempts to do so, in hopes of gaining the attention of males at her school or wherever.

Can you recommend a book(s) that explain the martial arts mindset (what is common across all or most martial arts)?

I feel this, and the political envying and backbiting in the martial arts is a long-standing problem. I mean CENTURIES old.
It always sucks when it comes into our own lives and back yards.

So many blames here, I partly blame greed and the parents that feel throwing money at private lessons ruin most places... those parents aren't in it to make there kids better, it's all about look at my kid and what I paid for

Funny how the same clowns who cry 'victim' are always the ones clawing for fame off the backs of others. It’s never about respect, truth, or the subject itself-it’s about building their own castles on borrowed foundations. The irony? Their castles crumble as easily as their credibility, and they’re always the last ones to see it.

Who promoted you through the ranks? I heard Kichiro was never seen working out in karate, where he didn’t work out with the 1st generation guys. So, did Tatsuo teach Kichiro one on one? Where father/son interaction could have affected matters???? I’m curious. Angi Uezu was said to studied under Tatsuo as a son in law I think it was.
But jealousy and envy, if you do Isshinryu and it’s Isshinryu, where would a problem arise?

I have photos where Kichiro, then 17 or 18 years old, is training with his father, Tatsuo

@ no kidding??? It’d been good if you could have posted them here! Where Tatsuo had his times with military, but I would guess he had family time. The 1st generation I think are about all gone and some of the second.

Budo politics. I have no time for politics. Just want to learn and train!
I have been witness to this type of crap numerous times over the years in Shorinjryu Karatedo (Hisataka/Kudaka lineage)
