    I'm waiting for Hatred 2, where its revealed that the events in the first game is nothing more than a sick dream of the protaganist, which ends up making him re-evaluate his want and need to kill, and he eventually seeks theropy and learns to golf to vent his frustrations.

    That was a really solid review. And your point about the violence reminds me of an interesting study on violence in the media which I read back in the mid-to-late 2000s -- it took quotes from film critics on things like the "Kill Bill" or "Saw" films and juxtaposed them with the same critics' quotes about films like "The Passion of the Christ". In nearly every case, the reviewers huffed and snarled about how the latter were "torture-porn" and too bloody and unnecessarily gruesome...while at the same time praising those very same elements when featured in films like "Kill Bill", "Saw", etc. They would decry one film for its stylized violence, then praise another for the very same thing. The dividing line seemed to be that they saw "Kill Bill", "Saw", etc. as "fun" and that "fun" justified the violence in a way that something like "The Passion of the Christ" didn't. Which is probably another reason why over-the-top murders and gore in "Dead Space" or "Mortal Kombat" gets a pass, while the less vioent, less gory "Hatred" gets slammed.

    • @rerez

      Awakeandalive1 Yup, it's a big problem in video games! :(

    • @elwapsable
      @elwapsable 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +Awakeandalive1 one thing you didn't consider is the impact both "The Passion of the Christ" aswell as "Hatred" could have on people compared to more stylized violence like in "Kill Bill" or "Mortal Kombat". I think the difference is the connection to reality. For many people the stories from the Bible are historic facts, so what critics could have in mind is the potential hatred towards Jews a movie like that could create. While it is less probable that someone might connect the events from a movie like "Kill Bill" to reality. It could be similar for "Hatred". There were actually alot of real life killing sprees within the last two decades and a thing all those people had in common was hatred towards a specific group of people or "the world" as a whole. Which is exactly what "Hatred" presents as main motivation in the intro. While a game like "Mortal Kombat" features nonhuman figures and magic and doesn't directly relate to anything existent in reality.
      Don't take me wrong, I'm all against putting any of those games or movies on the index, in fact I hate it when games aren't available on Steam or are altered in weird ways and, when living in Germany for example (we're really good at censoring games and movies for violence and gore just like the US are when it comes to nudity), you're basically forced to get them illegally. I'm just trying to understand the double standards described by you and I think I got a valid point.

      I believe it’s because Hotline Miami feels like a fever dream, the premise of the game often involves characters not seeing the world as it truly is (one way or another). But instead an exaggerated, trippy, iteration of it.

    Mortal Kombat and Dead Space were a lot more gory, but it was over the top nonsense violents that usually is more funny than shocking. The scenes in Hatred were more reallistic, that ment that it hit closer to home for people. Also a person going around killing everyone with a gun is somthing that seems to actually happen in real life, the media has yet to report on superhumans and mutants ripping each other in half in a death fight. or space creatures slicing people into pieces.

    • @windows8myram-426

      Mic Geeboon The game is still far from realistic.

    • @leviathanpaintballflorida
      @leviathanpaintballflorida 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True, but holding down innocent civilans and cops and stabing them, or blowing thier brains out, is somthing that seems to be more grounded in reality. riping a persons head off with bare hands after freezing them, not so much.

    • @windows8myram-426
      @windows8myram-426 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you played the game you are not blowing their brains out there's barely a spurt of blood and so what if its more towards at the end of the day its a game.

      @UnionJack437 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Mic Geeboon I agree with your original statement. This game may not be as "violent" as Mortal Kombat and Dead Space but it is much more disturbing. The fact that a person can kill so willingly and that a life can end so easily is much more mortifying than seeing someone ripped apart.
      Anyhow, not a fan of the games premise, but I don't hold a grudge on it. Just not for me.

    My positive about this game: It's a game where you can roleplay. For example, you play the game, and then you make up your own story, as there isn't any in the game. Because of this, let your imagination go with it. Say like, you made a story, where there's a former chef that tries to kill everyone because they don't like your food, or you're playing as a crazy man that tries to kill everyone in the city, because you're trying to find answers for why the world's ran out of cartons of milk, and threatening everyone to tell him why, or he'll blow up the entire place.

      Steve Compton I think in the case of the kid, it is due to their relative innocence compared to an adult. Each adult that you kill in the game, you can probably justify a reason in your head why they deserved it, but not a kid. As far as the homeless, it's probably because they have it shitty already and getting killed by a murdering psychopath is the cherry on top.

    Why is killing homeless people comparable to killing children? That just sounds kind of insulting to the homeless - like they wouldn't be able to stand the chance that a middle-income adult would.
    They're a vulnerable group in society, but it's not like they'd be more emotionally affecting to kill or anything.

  • @PacoFTW
    @PacoFTW 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The way the character executes the people makes you feel like he truly has no fucks given about the life he's taking. Mortal kombat and dead space draw it out, add weight too it. They really show " hey Jason really destroyed you this match." Or " man you shouldn't have let that monster do this to you, but now you gotta pay" hatred shows how efficient and nonchalant he is about life. He kills with no care in the world. You barely know when you're killing somebody because he's not excited about it. He doesn't care because he has no feeling. He does what he does and that's it. It's well designed but gives no real value other than mindless slaughter. Tearing your opponent to shreds in MK or getting destroyed and feeling absolutely powerless in Dead Space at least has value artistically. This is just a bleak murder spree with no redeeming value.

Looking at the footage you had of the game, it looked like the only specks of colour were sources of light - TVs, gas station signs, a vending machine, fire and so on. I don't know if its meant to symbolise him trying to find his guiding light or what, but the media thing just doesn't seem like it fits the big picture on its own.

    I think the difference between this game and MK is that in MK the violence is gory, but almost comical... it's so violent that is like a parody of violence... in other hand, Hatred present a kind of violence realistic, people die if they got shot in the head, their head maybe explode or open... and as you say... there is no plot to justify the death of people... so is just like those Shock games of early 2000 but with better grafics and physics

    One other positive is that Hatred's success (from a sales standpoint,anyway) should provide ample evidence that adults are losing patience with organizations who are at least on the surface well-meaning telling them what type of entertainment they can or can not purchase with their own money.
    Whether or not they should purchase it should be left up to individual taste or the quality of the product in question.

    The #4 reason of it "not being that violent misses" the mark. Mortal Kombat and Dead Space are clearly not based in any actual reality. Mortal Kombat is almost cartoony in it's violence and Dead Space is sci-fi horror similar to the movie Alien. I would argue that Hatred is way more violent with it realistic depiction of murder. Not that I'm offended or anything, as far as I'm concerned it just a game. It's just that comparison falls flat for me.

    Uhhmmm... actually I think the violence in Hatred is more disturbing because it isn't as over the top as Mortal Kombat or Dead Space. Yes, they are extremely gory and brutal, but it's ridiculous and cartoony. Hatred has extreme violence that's just downright cruel and disturbing. Shooting someone at point blank range with a rifle is more disturbing to me than slicing a Mortal Kombat character in a thousand pieces.
    It's the same reason why The Last Of Us is so disturbing in some parts. The violence is off the charts, because it's not as over the top as some other game's depiction of violence.

    I didn't think this game was that bad, really. The whole 'violence' gimmick was pretty cartoonish and corny, really. And it wasn't like it was realistic or anything. Most video games are 'mass murder simulators', anyway. I really don't see the big deal.
    There was some sub-optimization that made it pretty difficult to play, though.

    It struck a chord with people with all the mass shootings that happened. Especially around me in PA there was a man who was a war veteran that killed some of his family members and was roaming around my area. It kind of scared me, so when this game popped up, it didn't do much to help lol! But I never got offended by it by any means, I actually kind of liked it. The game did it's job: Be provocative. It reminds me of the 90's violent video game craze and I kind of liked how we were reliving that for a little bit. Seeing all the easily butthurt and sensitive people (Like Angry Joe) get so offended over a game like this was quite hilarious and enjoyable to watch. I guess some people really do like to watch the world burn.

    The point is not the "Gore" on the scene, is the malice behind it, in Mortal Kombat there are two persons perfectly capable of defending themselves and know exactly how it could end, in Dead Space is someone trying to survive monsters, and at the end of the game, he's victorious.... but in Hatred is just killing DEFENSELESS people most of the time.

      Jonas King And yet people keep comparing video games to real atrocities. The Crusades is more inventive, but still not that heavily different from the standard Holocaust comparison. The numbers were lower, but the motivation of gaining power and the hatred was there, and also there were less people on Earth then, so that's a factor too.

      I don't know if interactive violence is completely innocent, and I mean just that. Don't know. What I would like is a real discussion, without hyperbole or people getting emotional. I think the conversation has been dishonest on both sides. We have plenty of people/pundits/talking heads willing to call GTA a murder simulator, giving the interactivity far too much emphasis and infantilizing the people who are playing the games. But then on the other side, we see non-interactive art (film, music, comics, etc) cited over and over, robbing games of their interactivity and ignoring the transformative power of the player over the medium. If someone wants to use GTA to "simulate murder," than, fuck, give that person a controller. If anything, perhaps some aggression will be vented, and perhaps they will realize what a profoundly stupid idea it is when their car flies in to the moon because gravity broke.

    Okay, while I do think we should probably question the amount of violence we see in media these days I think that the context of the violence and how it's used is important. A story like The Last of Us couldn't be told without a lot of violence. It sets the atmosphere, shows different sides of the characters, and we see it as a horrible necessity in a difficult world. It serves multiple purposes and works to create a memorable story and isn't just there for it's own sake.

    This game wasn't intended to make you feel bad. Just listen to the main character's dialogue. Listen to what he says in all the cutscenes. He's an idiot with delusions of grandeur and a massive chip on his shoulder. And with that realization, you begin to understand that the whole thing just descends into self-parody. The developers know how ridiculous it is; its dark presentation is nothing but a smokescreen. They expect you to pick up on this and just laugh at everything. That makes it easy to have fun playing a game that, when stripped down to its bare core, is no different than any other M-Rated title out there. We play mature games BECAUSE we have an itch to kill walking NPCs. The reason for doing it in any given world is irrelevant, and singling out Hatred for pushing it too far is simply being disingenuous.
    I know this because I have memories of playing Warcraft III. That game literally allows you to kill children as soon as you take control of human Arthas, and not once will you face any consequences for doing it. I've not seen one article to this day slamming Blizzard for its controversial violence or cruelty.

  • @andykromer3529
    @andykromer3529 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I disagree with number four. The reason why it is more shocking than Mortal Kombat or Dead Space was how realistically it shows people being killed. In fact, that is one of the main reasons Manhunt got an Adults only rating despite being much less gory. See, Mortal Kombat has been focusing on gore for a long time, so long people were desensitized to over-the-top gore. But Hatred, like Manhunt, did it in a realistic way which was different, so it was more controversial. The main part that sparked controversy about Hatred was how realistic the executions were when it came to not just the act of killing people, but how people react while they are dying. Seeing innocent, defenseless people's last words being spent begging for their lives or cursing the character before they were murdered really sparked emotions, because this could just as easily happen in real life. Also, people's terror response to a mass murderer in the game are really realistic too.
