      @@ree2398 You can just find it logic. You see, sometimes you don t quite have to go through something to know how it would be, you can know just by thinking in a good way about it or simply know it. Your intelligence can be a factor of knowing it as well. He s not the single one who has this though. But you don t find people with this though too often. I agree with him. And I also experiece what he said.

      Tomislav Cicak I think that's a pretty good summary.

    • @LongToad
      @LongToad 7 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      +Tomislav Cicak- Some people won't ever change their mind no matter how well you word what you say or how much evidence you provide. There is a mental block in most people's heads (call it cognitive dissonance or whatever you want) where they will do anything to justify their beliefs. Sure, not all people are close-minded and your method is definitely better for convincing those that are already somewhat rational but I hardly think these rational people are the problem with society. -The problem today is that so many people don't fall into this "rational" category. Rationality and philosophy have no place in modern society, to most people it's best to only exist on a very basic level and not question anything. It actually makes sense, why depress yourself when you're more happy while being ignorant? Being open minded (or enlightened or whatever you want to call it) will only make them depressed, which is why they will do anything to avoid it (even if those defenses are at a subconscious level). It's better to live in a world where unicorns exist, they don't want to hear otherwise.
      I think the only way to get your ideas across with closed-minded people is simply by dominance, confidence, and by conviction. If they're not convinced then you simply roll over them on your way to your goal. The problem here is that using these tools is against the nature of most philosophical or rational debate. -This may be why science suffers so much in convincing people of anything. Science, by nature, can never be truly assertive and most scientists lack the conviction to fight for their discoveries.

      @Derek Huot, That’s not true. The reason dumb people have more friends is because they pick bad friends, if you wanna be smart, and have a lot of friends, you have to pick good friends. Here’s some facts. You can be book smart, and street smart, and you can teach an old dog new tricks, you can’t teach a stubborn dog new tricks. As you age, it is harder to memorize stuff, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Also, “Nothing is impossible, not if you can imagine it, that’s what being a scientist is all about.” -Hubert Farnsworth

    • @thepoet6888
      @thepoet6888 3 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      @Envy It’s not the same,
      Long explanation:
      Saying that, smart people have fewer friends means the same as someone with fewer friends are smart- which isn’t, it means it’s more difficult for a smart person making friends. Because smart people trying to figure out what the ‘dumber’ person is saying or doing- or just talking to them in general is well difficult, and as well hard to understand their way of thinking since both people have different minds.
      Shorten:
      It means being smart is just more difficult to make friends on a ‘mind’ level.
      If you have few friends that doesn’t mean you’re automatically smart, you could have a bad personality or just really introverted.

    No friends. Above-average intelligence... the number itself doesn't matter much at this point. But I would like friends. Just a few real friends. Not the fake friends that you hug and claim to love after just a couple of meetings. The main problem is I become bored almost immediately in groups, or worse, if I try to talk about something interesting (to me, at least) all conversation comes to an awkward halt as they cannot keep up or just don't know what to say in response (they can just as easily get bored with me as I do with them). And worse still are the people you try to talk to who believe they're well-read when they are not; those people are particularly irritating because they are opinionated in the most ignorant ways.
    I often feel terribly isolated while standing in a group. I can't be myself most of the time. I do want to bond with people, and they could be the sweetest people in the world, but if we don't have much in common and I'm not stimulated or challenged by their conversation, then not only do I fail to connect with them on any meaningful level, I feel guilty about the whole thing, and feel like a bad person about it because they are such nice people - yet I can barely wait to get away from them so I can stop pretending to be interested and smiling in their presence (which is exhausting).
    I also resent the need for constant fakery, at that level, in order to be polite for the other person's sake. I also suspect at times that the mere need for the fakery indicates that I am just an asshole, and this reinforces my desire for self-imposed isolation from people who deserve better company (from my perspective, I am not good enough for them). And still I am a human being - a member of a deeply social species - and crave just one best friend with whom I could have that connection, that intellectual intimacy, where I can just be myself and feel understood, and give all of myself to someone much like me in return.

      Social anxiety is different, it's more than simply wanting to leave a party early, you will feel compelled to avoid the entire thing if you can. If you are looking to find people and find them all lacking that is not social anxiety, the prospect of dealing with new people causes nervousness in the socially anxious. I share a lot of these traits and I've worked in retail, I've also worked as a trainer and teacher. I definitely do not have social anxiety. My social skills are actually rather good, I'd just prefer not to use them on mundane people and their mundane interests and often manufactured drama. Drama I imagine most of them manufacture because even they know how boring they are in their day-to-day lives. It's why I never had much interest in things like Facebook either, so little of value is ever said.
      When teaching other people who struggle to understand what I teach them I can get frustrated because I learn new concepts very easily, and that makes it difficult to empathize with someone who does struggle to learn. Because my social skills are good I can manage to not make them feel dumb even if I might be thinking it, but I can only think of so many ways to explain a problem before giving up on some cases because some people are just dumb. Ignorance can also get in the way from time to time but ignorance has a fairly simple cure, dumb...not so much.

      Oh my gosh! I feel the same way. I have a few friends but I'm only deeply connected to one. I hate when we go or eat in groups because i won't be able to talk or express myself or my opinions. But when do find myself in the unnecessary situation where i have to be social I do the exact opposite and keep mum because the topics are so boring and not in the least interesting to me. I enjoy deep conversations and forming bonds but only to those who understand how I am. I'm pretty much a loner in Uni most of the time which doesn't bother me in the least. Its funny that I do try to get away too from fakers and pretenders. Many of my friends are awesome and reliable too but I just don't feel connected with them as I ought to. Its a tough time trying to make interesting conversation or smiling at something that I don't find the least bit funny. I really thought something was wrong with me because I was so antisocial. That led me to take the Myers-Briggs test and I found that I had an Advocate/ Counsellor (INFJ) personality. It got my personality to the point and hell I'm proud of it!! ☺😉

    I also read some studies that very intelligent people are deeply troubled by the world’s problems, but also so much more than common folk because very smart people see the problem’s nature and understand how simple the solution is. And also we see (sorry but yes, I’m saying “we” because it’s just true) not only the root of the problem (usually the evil inclinations of few individuals), but we also see the sheer apathy and laziness of the common folk in terms of wanting to make things better. We see how easily people are deceived not only because of ignorance but because they would rather be entertained than educated, rather be indulgent than vigilant. And so it makes us feel so alone, like a sane person trapped living in an asylum.

Intelligent people are more picky with who they want as friends, I know because I'm picky with an IQ of 120 and I'm the one who simply observes people to see if I'll like you. So being lonely isn't something most of us bother to consider because solace is peace, and peace is grand. That said the few people who are my friends I treasure.

      @Kenny Westone I've never lost it due being laughed at whilst trying to explain basic things, but I know what you mean. Even in university, idiots that laugh at facts and logic are alarmingly common. Heck, not even my parents, who are quite intelligent, can follow me well, but that may be due to attention spans. I don't think many of the "idiots" are actually idiots, they just don't want/know how to use their brains, strive on cheap joy, and have a nonexistence attention span. For one or two of those "idiots" (that I know of), once you really get through to them, they learn much, much faster than you do. It's very scary sometimes. (though, to be fair, they probably only seem to learn faster because they don't look deep into the subject. Instead, they soak the information up without really processing it)
      Sometimes I envy them, they seem to enjoy life a lot better than I do, and they certainly are the majority. I am in an awkward position: I am not nearly intelligent enough to excel at anything, even normal life takes too much brainpower. Nor am I simple-minded enough to enjoy life as it is. I cannot find consistent joy in doing most things and feel bored most of the time. Not even my hobbies help, as they leave a bitter aftertaste. That weirdness may be because I was barred from doing things I truly liked/ wanted most of my life, and I subconsciously still psychologically punish myself for enjoying certain activities.
      I also have the small problem of typing ludicrously long comments without intending it...
      WHY CAN'T I TYPE ESSAYS THIS WELL?!

      Humans just don't have a value if you can't get away from them. I'm pretty sure it's just the fact that distance makes the heart grow fonder and people in cities are overwhelmed with the amount of strangers passing by. Combine that with cost of living and a drop in quality. What we want isn't really quantity but quality and most people end up just ignoring you. You don't even greet people living in the same building.. insane.

    • @NostalgiaforInfinity
      @NostalgiaforInfinity 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what you define as "pinnacle" of society. People in the cities may live in a highly efficient system that takes care of their every need, but they live miserable lives, because humans didn't evolve to live in groups of millions. Meanwhile, rural people may not have the material advantages of city dwellers, but are much healthier, often live happier and fulfilling lives, and live longer. At the end of the day, it depends on what kind of a person you want to be. If you're a materialist, then cities are for you. But if you care more about simplicity and peace of mind, then you were made for rural life.

      It's very interesting how society looks at people.

      I don't dare speak my mind with a lot of things. I don't see it from the same perspective as others, and I know I'm just going to be shunned or frowned at due to how intolerant a great portion of the world can be for anything but their own ideals.
      So yeah, quite probably I'd be branded as crazy. Sometimes other people should keep their mouths shut too. This free speech thing the western world keeps preaching is great and all, but free-speakers also need to realise we have the freedom to not listen, eg. tell them to fuck off.
      There's probably a lot of really useful suggestions being held back by all the introverts in the world, but we'll probably never know unless they all come forward and say something.

    • @americawheredidyougo1994
      @americawheredidyougo1994 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Alex Paulsen - "I don't dare speak my mind with a lot of things", That's just society trying to shove that into your subconcious to try and suppress those points of view that they either don't get or possibly make them uncomfortable within themselves that hits home with something that stirs from within themselves (and I'm not referring to adult toddler type of behavior that some in the world want to think is normal or acceptable).
      Introverts are a special breed because they are always watching and listening in conversations or just the world in general; I know, for myself, whenever someone is speaking, I am kind of studying and examining everything they say: from what they say, how they say it, the movements they are making when they say it ... a lot can be gained from just listening and viewing.
      There are a lot of good people with a lot of good things to say, unfortuantely, sometimes, they are drowned out by the chaos of the worlds boisterous behaviors.

    Being smart is a burden. Because the smarter you are the more hyperaware you are of people and situations that are dumb and ignorant. Which can be irritating. That effect becomes worse if smart people also judge themselves pretty harshly for their own shortcomings. It's really hard to be happy when you see all that is wrong with the world and lack of effort when all the solutions are within reach.
    Edit: just saw how many likes this comment got, wow.
    We'll it turns out I'm a bit on the spectrum tbh. So I guess that makes me, and potentially you too, a bit different than most.
    I am getting married in 2 months, my lady says I'm weird in many ways but she loves me 🤣 so I guess I wouldn't change a thing.
    I hope for all of you when life gets hard, or annoying and frustrating that you take a deep breath, and don't give up and keep being a little weird. Someone does need your weirdness somewhere.
    People on the spectrum that are highly functional tend to have quirks that make them hyper sensitive or aware and they may also be really good at one particular skill or another. That is useful.
    I can't say I am always that way. I am more the jack of all trades but the master of none...thou I'm quite decent at what I do and above the average at a few skills...I just don't consider myself a great master at anything.
    Hard to explain, idk, maybe you folks are the same, but it doesn't matter. Just keep being you and be good at it, put it to good use. Make the most out of your life. Don't let life get in the way. Do what you need to do!

And it never stops no matter how much you want to just not think about things so much you cannot stop. It becomes so difficult to talk to people because while you are talking to them your brain is constantly overanalyzing everything you say. Then at the end of the conversation despite saying so much you still feel as though you did not properly explain yourself well, and continue to overanalyze everything you said to no end.

      I just read all your comments. I'm not very smart, so I don't have all the answers, but I spent most of my life searching for them and found a few clues.
      Find purpose in life by putting your energy into something that YOU enjoy doing! This can be something as simple as a hobby that can be turned into a somewhat similar job.
      Most jobs contribute to humanity in one way or another more or less. Find what you are good at and apply it in a way which can improve the world and yourself. If everyone in the world did that, humanity would be so much further ahead.
      If you fail, get up and try again until you succeed. Get a book if need be (free public library) or go to school to increase your chances. Put in the work! Nothing happens without countless months of work. There is no easy way.
      And if you lack motivation, try this. Go to sleep early (even if you can't sleep, do physical exercise early in the day to help with sleep later, or eat food 15 minutes before bed to help induce sleep). Then wake up early and do your bed, very important to do your bed right after you wake up because you accomplish the first task of many for the day, it also helps you wake up and avoid going back in bed and you can build on from there.
      Never stop, or you become your own enemy, instead let each completed task guide you forward. You'll find success this way and change the world by focusing on completing positive challenges one after another. With time you'll get good, just like practicing a sport.
      Finally, surround yourself with people that also do the same and make connections, useful friends are best. Use connections to help you move forward faster and accomplish more than you would on your own. There's no shame in using others help, people do it all the time, they build upon each other's momentum.
      Hope that helps someone. You'll get what you want if you keep putting in work. Good luck.

    i feel like what people consider "being social" is a learned thing where u are told to act like everyone else and to smile and be polite and to not be mean and to be nice even if it means being dishonest. This is contrary to being "natural" which i think is what smart people are being when they come off as "social awkward" to other people. I strongly believe that when you are being "natural" aka "being yourself" then AUTHENTIC relationships rather than ARTIFICIAL relationships will result. And those are the ONLY kind of relationships worth having in my book.

      I can very much relate to this. I think way too much and way too long about everything. People think I'm slow ... which I am. But that is because I think about every possibility very carefully before coming to a decision, not because my thinking is slow in general. Even instant messaging is too fast sometimes and speaking with a person about something that is not absolutely trivial is usually a mess because I thought about it until the other person fell asleep or went home. Of course I try to act "normal" as often as I can but it is sometimes difficult for me. When I am put to a decision I have to evaluate all possibilities before taking it :S

    All the happiest couples I’ve seen have pretty similar levels of intellect. Neither feels dumb in the relationship, neither feels they need to ”dumb it down” to have the other one understand them. I’ve seen one ”smart&successful meets hot but dumb”-couple, and they crashed and burned within weeks because _both_ got frustrated with the other one’s intellectual level. The hot but dumb one felt the smart one was being purposefully condescending and talking down to them, the smart one felt like they were speaking to a toddler. I guess it’s hard to find common interests and worldviews in a situation like that.
    My husband and I are in the same field of study and within one IQ point from each other. The communication is _so much easier_ when we just inherently know we both understand and are understood by each other.

      I would have to agree. Even though my wife has 2 masters degrees, and I have no college, we are about equal in intelligence. It also helps that we both have a good sense of humor, I cannot imagine surviving in life without one. We also both have common sense, and at least average EQ (more important than IQ in my opinion). it also helps that we are both humble, we know that we are not "smart" about everything, we like to joke about how "stupid" we are about many things in life. Now my brother, his IQ is about 180, but even he admits his social skills are a bit lacking, but he doesn't care, lol. That being said, we both have great social lives, together and separately, a lot of friends. If fact we both agree that if we didn't hate housework (we also both work full time, and in my case OT), or had a housekeeper, we would have people over all the time. ;)

You're based on a subjective view of reality and it's not a good thing actually. If you think black is white when it's a fact that it's black then that's your view on it. It doesn't change the fact that it's black. I'm not giving you my opinion of what the colour is, I'm telling you what the colour is. You get what I'm saying?
      My gf: But im not changing my answer we can just disagree
      It might be white
      The answer might be false
      She easily gets on my nerves. :/ This was an actual conversation we had, no words omitted, added, removed. Just that. Based on this, I have to agree with you. She even says I have to "dumb things down" for her. It's irritating. I was really broken after the whole conversation and just ignored her for a week. She said some really concerning things. She just called me names for doing what she asked me to do, explain things to her.
