I went in for my interview I had. I experience but I had been saving 20$ each week and stated buying hand tools and by time I got the job I had most of the tools from your video you posted about tools for day 1
Handshakes we’re something I learned to do fairly young because it’s essential when meeting people, I’m 21 but I have practiced my handshake like crazy aswell as my communication skills. I had no experience but I absolutely rocked my interview and he basically handed me the position. I start in a couple days! I got all my tools and I’m ready to learn!
I watch a lot of your videos especially while I was in trade school! I thank you for your channel of wisdom! I started trade school last year and was watching this video today otw to my interview. I was hired on the spot for a 5 year apprenticeship with a very big electrical company! This guy is the goat!
Listened to this on the way to my interview. Very nice points and tips. Another great last statement you can say that will leave a lasting impression is "I want to get to the point where you can confidently send me to a job, whether that's at a store or a house or new construction, and know that I will get the job done
Wow, what a coincidence, I'm currently in college doing a pre apprenticeship program and I have to do a mock interview this morning, this is super helpful
Wow. You blew my mind when you said to ask the interviewer about the biggest strengths and flaws of the company. That is a power psychological tactic that isn’t really taught anywhere. Thank you for this I’m definitely going to use it. It’s amazing what (as you said) knocking them down a peg can do when they consider you afterwards. Crazy powerful
I'm almost done with a 3 year army contract and I'm trying to get an apprenticeship as preferably an Ironworker. I'll honestly take any apprenticeship I can get though I just want a stable career for when I get out.
Inspiring video! I have an interview in less than two weeks for electrician's apprentice in a union. Good luck to all those who are taking tests and doing interviews. Thanks for the insight journey2master.
This might be the best advice I've ever heard, and it even reaches outside the bounds it was meant to reach. You can take this advice and apply it to any job you're looking to get.
I'm in the IBEW. The process for getting into the Apprenticeship goes roughly as follows. Application: in my local, I had to go in person to fill out an application (some are online like the bigger cities, I live near Boston so they do online) you need to bring a high school transcript or better stating that you completed at least one course of algebra 1, proof of citizenship and maybe an application fee. After that come the aptitude test: This exam will most likely follow into the next year after applying (or if they have room to have you take the test in the same year, you can) The exam will contain a algebra section, and reading comprehension section. This test is multiple choice bubble fill-in (similar to most scan tron tests) After competing the exam the local will send you a letter in the mail with your score and if you receive a passing grade (determined by the local) you move on to... The interview: The interview date will be on the letter sent to you address with a time. Do not be late for this! Lol (follow what Dustin says in this video pretty much) You will be in a room with about 4-10 other union contractors, judging and scoring you in the interview process. If you do good in the interview, boom! You're in! They will contact you when work is avaliable, and will start classes some time in September. This whole process took me since January this year. I just became a 1st year apprentice for my local and it's been pretty great thus far. Any questions feel free to ask!
@@bryanlettow4389 should be pretty much the same for any local. Telecommunications, outside wiremen (line workers) And I'm not sure why, but I heard that getting into the linemen's local is a little harder. Wayyy Higher wages, more risk and harsher environments. But if it's your passion I'd say shoot for it. To be honest, I don't have the balls to be a lineman lol. I look up to them very highly. They are sort of my personal heros, doing the work they do.
@@bryanlettow4389 good luck to you, and hey, if for whatever reason you can't get in this year. Work in an open shop and get your feet wet, and keep trying till you get in. You'll be building hours and when you do get in, you'll be way ahead of everyone else (expirence wise too, which is huge)
In 3 hours I interview for the local plumbers and pipefitters. Thank you for putting your experience out there. TH-cam, as important as the printing press. Let's go! 🙏🤞🙏
I started the process in July, took my exam in September, and finally got notified that I passed. I have my interview tomorrow. I feel prepared and I'm more excited than I am nervous.
This guy is awesome. Spot on in every video. As an electrician, this is what we want from apprentices. There's no better feeling than seeing someone learn and grow.
Left the army after 12 years and worked off and on for an electrician for two years. Left it for a year, then missed it. Now I'm going back with all the tools I'll need and knowledge. Heavily looking forward to crawling through insulation and cobwebs again. Such a great trade. It's always a learning experience.
Just finished my interview.. literally did what you said at the end and the interview ended with them saying, “this was a great interview!” Thanks man. Looking for that top 10 rank!
Came across your videos late last year. Kind of binged watched to catch up. Long story short I applied for my apprenticeship in September and start here in a few weeks! Love the channel man!!
Thanks for making video,I was inspired on your message. I just finished my technical program and getting to the workforce. I felt overwhelmed for my interview and now I don’t because I just have to be myself in a humble way and be honest. I felt I have received great advice. Thank You!
I've asked what sets your company apart from the rest after they asked me why I wanted to work for them over any other company... these questions were at different times as you noted like they asked me in the begining and I asked them towards the end when they asked if I had any questions but here's the thing that I felt made it a cool way to ask... I said, _'I told you why I thought your company was my first pick, but what do you feel sets your company apart from the rest? I use the technique of acknowledging that this is the same question I've been asked for a few reasons... one it shows I was paying attention and remember what we went over like a half hour ago which shows them that I am interested more than just having questions to ask when they ask if I have any questions, and because it doesn't allow them to just pair it back what I told them, at least not without some creativity thus, like you said, putting them in the hot seat just enough to make me memorable. So if you have a question ready to ask them and before you get the chance to ask it they ask you essentially the same question, try still asking it but acknowledge that you were asked and what your answer was, like in the above example I mentioned what set them appart for me was that when I looked them up on places like indeed and glassdoor, I was impressed by the reviews that said that the groth and education assistance oppertunities were great and that that was exactly what I was looking for in a company.
Really wish I had watched this before my interview with my local. I don’t think I did too bad but after watching this I feel like I could have done better. Either way Thanks again great video 👍
Thank you for this advice , I have my electrician apprenticeship interview this Friday at 9am , I just say this helped me a lot and I feel more confident , I have zero knowledge in that field but I’m hungry to learn 💯 thanks again !
Thank you for this video. I just interviewed with an electrician yesterday, I know I didn't get the job, but I could definitely see from the things you covered what I personally need to work on.
Also I would add be ready to sweep. One of my tests for a new helper is to have them sweep the warehouse, if you have one lol. Then I check to see if they swept around items on the ground or actually moved the items to properly sweep my floors lol. As my man stated be ready to go above and beyond the call of the position your shooting for👊🏻👊🏻👍🏻
Considering this trade now as I’ve been a journeymen painter for 8 years. Planning to send in my application and study for the aptitude test as much as possible. 2025 I will become an electrical apprentice. I am going to make it happen. Thank you for this video.
I have an interview today for laborers apprentice and this has helped so much. I feel a lot more confident I wish I could have you in my ear during this lol
Dude, thanks so much for this video! Your mentions of humble, honest character sits true to me and I'd never think to portray that to an employer.. All of your advice is highly valued. I am registering for an apprenticeship at my local community college soon
Lombardi time! Some of the best advice I’ve ever been given. Also, I’m in a different trade but some companies in my industry will take a brand new apprentice and throw them in a truck on the road after 6 months. Then wonder why they fuck up.
Hi from down under. Here in Australia we have a 3 months course for the electrical trade, a Certificate II (also called a pre-trade or career-start). Most electrical apprenticeship jobs now require that before apply. It shows some commitment that you made, that you can understand Ohm's Law and ok with basic tools. I got my apprenticeship last week as a mature age (paid 50% higher than kids under 21) simply because my teacher told the company that I was top of the class in both theoretical knowledge and hands-on.
This video just got me through a interview and the owner wants me to start Monday! I ofcourse have been surrounded by trade work and have a great work ethic but these points are very important to use during an interview!
thank you so much for making this video, it helped me feel a little more comfortable about my upcoming interview. It is a week from tomorrow... I really don't have any experience in the trade whatsoever, I have been a part of the work force since i was in high school, unfortunately from 2006-2024 i have been working entirely in the restaurant industry. Just need to find the right words to use to sell the fact that I am a hard worker, and am 100 percent willing and able to do the work and put in the time. I WANT TO LEARN!!!!!
Thank-you for this! I have an interview with Puget Sound Electrical JATC here in Washington State on March 7th. I'm getting more nervous every day 'cuz this could/will be a huge pivotal moment in my life. I really hope they see that I'm an honest hard worker that they can rely on and willing to learn.
Ive watched this before. I recently got an interview for a few days from now at an electrical company. Probably gonna watch this again a few more times
Scheduled for my interview with the Union next week. This will be a complete career switch for me and I am both nervous and excited. Looking forward to the journey.
Thank you, I've been doing heavy civil pipe work for the last 10 years and I'm looking for somthing more lucrative and not as physically demanding. I'm excited to pursue this.
Something that I have found a lot of success with in interviews is finding out what expectation they seem most concerned about their people accomplishing and showing that you'll do it. I got a sales job by calling more than once to check on the status of my hiring because the interviewer made it clear that they had many hired people who were unwilling to call people. I got a maintenance tech job by picking up trash in a walking interview after the interviewer stressed the importance of grounds upkeep and appearance to the job. My experience is that most bosses in any industry are just trying to find people who are willing to do the work that needs to happen.
Ive been applying to many companies for apprenticeships for several weeks. Have a second interview with a company today, and a first with a different company tomorrow. One thing I would like to say to people applying is how important follow up calls are. I was getting worried about not getting any response after about ten applications. Finally after about a week and a half I started making follow up calls, and suddenly I landed two interviews in a week.
I watched this in preparation for my interview, went in slightly nervous but nothing major because I thought this info was gonna help tremendously, which I'm sure it would've lol. My interviewer was so interested in my previous work history, it was different from a normal interview. She was genuinely curious (I've had some interesting job history... it's tough to explain but people are usually always super curious, it's fun to talk about at parties) and just wanted to know more and more. Didn't ask me really anything else and I had the interview nailed basically 10 minutes in but spent an hour just chatting, she introduced me to the owner of the company, toured me all around the shop. I got hired on the spot and they're interviewing 4 more people for 1 more job 😅 Can't wait to start!
If I told everything about myself to an employer I will not get hired. Yes, I have done some electrical work up to 770 volts AC. Years of residential and industrial wiring (with my own tools), recently completed a class to upgrade to the latest at a college here, under a local journeyman (finished with an 'A+ and he says I'm a wireman). All the other types of work I've done through my life to support myself is related, but hard on employers. I already know I wouldn't get hired. For some reason my skills scare employers. This is why I dumbed down my resume. I want to continue training in electrical, and work, but I can't tell too much. I had a lot of experience scarring employers, I don't want to do that anymore, I'd rather get hired, in this field, at the lowest level so I can learn everything!
I’ve been watching your videos for months now. I applied for a union apprenticeship in CA around June. Finally got reached out with a test date for October! I’m all studied up for the test and ready to pass it and land a interview. Thank for you the immaculate advice 🙏🏻 I’m ever so grateful
The interview process goes both ways. Youre interviewing each other so make the most of your time and think about what you want to know before going in. I like to find out as much as possible about the place beforehand. Also something really important from the vid...most of the time the interviewer is also the owner. Hes put in years and years of care to start and grow his business. Hes taking a risk hiring someone else to partner with him, hes trusting you. Make sure youre worthy of that trust.
The biggest issue I'm experiencing right now along with some of the classmates in trade school is alot of non-union contractors aren't taking guys with zero experience. They want people who already know what they're doing and already show a commitment to this field of work for years on end. The other issue is even if say you wanna go union none of the local unions in my area aren't taking guys with less then 1500 hours in the specific field of work you're applying for such an Inside wireman or residential wireman position. My question is how can you ever get into any of these trades if people aren't willing to give you the chance to prove yourself?
Jack Off this is what I did, I finally got an apprenticeship, I’m so grateful because I know how hard it is to get an apprenticeship, what I did was work with an electrician for basically free so I can learn the basics (receptacles, switches, different size wires, tools needed, etc) then call electricians and electrical companies and ask them if they are hiring apprentices with experience, state the basics on the phone call, then yea, you’ll be good, I called over 30 companies so don’t get discouraged, good luck!
I got an interview Tom with IES residential, I have a year worth of experience under my belt. I really excited to learn more. I just can’t wait for them to hire me right away.
Tyler Gregory honestly man it was real short, I could say it went well because I was honest with them! They asked me what kinda hobbies I have and why I want to be an apprentice. Focus on the fact that you’re trying to make a career out of this and if you don’t have knowledge they’ll easily know. Honesty man 👍🏽 I hear back in two weeks so let’s hope!

I think I just got really lucky because my Uncle is a master electrician and has his own business so I have had the opportunity to work under him.
Wow, what a coincidence, I'm currently in college doing a pre apprenticeship program and I have to do a mock interview this morning, this is super helpful
good luck brother
I’ve worked in the trades before, just gotta get that retail job life outta me
Nailed an interview with these tips today.
Thanks i go in for my union interview Wednesday
After that come the aptitude test:
This exam will most likely follow into the next year after applying (or if they have room to have you take the test in the same year, you can)
The exam will contain a algebra section, and reading comprehension section. This test is multiple choice bubble fill-in (similar to most scan tron tests)
After competing the exam the local will send you a letter in the mail with your score and if you receive a passing grade (determined by the local) you move on to...
The interview:
The interview date will be on the letter sent to you address with a time. Do not be late for this! Lol
(follow what Dustin says in this video pretty much)
You will be in a room with about 4-10 other union contractors, judging and scoring you in the interview process.
If you do good in the interview, boom! You're in! They will contact you when work is avaliable, and will start classes some time in September.
This whole process took me since January this year. I just became a 1st year apprentice for my local and it's been pretty great thus far.
Any questions feel free to ask!
I'm guessing IBEW process is the same for a linework apprentice?
@@bryanlettow4389 should be pretty much the same for any local. Telecommunications, outside wiremen (line workers)
And I'm not sure why, but I heard that getting into the linemen's local is a little harder. Wayyy Higher wages, more risk and harsher environments. But if it's your passion I'd say shoot for it.
To be honest, I don't have the balls to be a lineman lol. I look up to them very highly. They are sort of my personal heros, doing the work they do.
@@matthewdacosta8630 I just graduated from the NLC pre-apprentice program that's why I was curious. I'm applying like crazy. Lol
@@matthewdacosta8630 what do you mean by open shop?
In 3 hours I interview for the local plumbers and pipefitters. Thank you for putting your experience out there. TH-cam, as important as the printing press. Let's go! 🙏🤞🙏
amazing advice. I'm 15 and will definitely use these when i go for interviews
Well said, thank you for the kind words my friend
this is fire
wow. your audience is so fortunate to have this. this is NOT how people teach kids to interview like.
Wow never got so hyped for a interview video!
Left the army after 12 years and worked off and on for an electrician for two years. Left it for a year, then missed it. Now I'm going back with all the tools I'll need and knowledge. Heavily looking forward to crawling through insulation and cobwebs again. Such a great trade. It's always a learning experience.
My son attends electrician school and I will definitely tell him that he needs to watch your channel! Thanks Dustin:)
That's great news my friend! Congrats and good luck with everything!
If you’re early you’re on time, if you’re on time you’re late, if you’re late, don’t bother showing up
Thanks for making video,I was inspired on your message. I just finished my technical program and getting to the workforce. I felt overwhelmed for my interview and now I don’t because I just have to be myself in a humble way and be honest. I felt I have received great advice. Thank You!
This popped up a week after my interview, I'm not even gonna watch so I don't psych myself out. I was just honest.
So, how did it go?
@@DavidMartinez-ce3lp I’m on the waiting list (EOP list) waiting to be called . Last time I checked I was #730 that was like 3 weeks ago.
This is the best interview advice that I have ever seen. Practical, psychological, and honestly helpful tips. Thank you.
As my man stated be ready to go above and beyond the call of the position your shooting for👊🏻👊🏻👍🏻
Robert Trinkle lol I do the same thing with new guys. See if they can do the simple things well without letting their egos get in the way.
How did it go? And what state?
I got an interview next week in Green Bay, WI. Wish me luck guys
This video is gold man. I watched this video the night before my interview and now I am 5 months into my apprenticeship. Loving every minute of it!
Dude, thanks so much for this video!
Your mentions of humble, honest character sits true to me and I'd never think to portray that to an employer.. All of your advice is highly valued.
I am registering for an apprenticeship at my local community college soon
I’ve watched several of your videos and as someone currently sending out resumes and trying to get my 1st job this is extremely helpful !! Thanks
Did you get in???
all i have to say is thank you all for your videos and can't wait to become an electrician.
Dustin, thank you for every single video you've ever done! Can't even find the words to say....🏆
thank you so much for making this video, it helped me feel a little more comfortable about my upcoming interview.
Got a few interviews coming up this month, video definitely helping me feel
Comfortable I really want this career.
I watched this video before my interview yesterday just got the news that I’m starting Monday thank you!
Ive watched this before. I recently got an interview for a few days from now at an electrical company. Probably gonna watch this again a few more times
Scheduled for my interview with the Union next week. This will be a complete career switch for me and I am both nervous and excited. Looking forward to the journey.
Good luck bro!
This might be on if the best videos I’ve seen
Have an interview this upcoming Wednesday for an apprenticeship. This video helped me know what to expect thanks man. Hope I get this. I need it.
Got the job! Been at it for about 2 months. Learning everyday and absolutely loving it. Best decision I've made regarding career path
I really soak up your advice and respect your level headedness very much. Thank you.
thanks man my interview is today and you really came in clutch with these methods on interviews i also messaged u on instagram thx alot boss
I'm starting at faith technologies in a couple of weeks at 19yo, hopefully this will be a great career
Dayne Ellison I have an interview with Faith today, are you out of Oklahoma too?
Good job bro, I’m almost 20 and been trying to get an apprenticeship for a year now hope it works out for u
Good stuff Oliver, can you update us on how things are now?
hows it gone? I've trying to keep my head up over this
I watched this in preparation for my interview, went in slightly nervous but nothing major because I thought this info was gonna help tremendously, which I'm sure it would've lol.
Thank you! Just got accepted into the operating engineer’s apprenticeship!!
Congratulations, do you have any update about your first year and tips about the aptitude test and interview?
Thank you
I’ve been watching your videos for months now. I applied for a union apprenticeship in CA around June. Finally got reached out with a test date for October! I’m all studied up for the test and ready to pass it and land a interview. Thank for you the immaculate advice 🙏🏻 I’m ever so grateful
Thank you , im 12 and i will use this when i go for the interview.. 🍭🍬 thank u man !
You will be great electrictian
My interview is in a couple of hours. Wish me luck!
I have an interview this Monday. So this was helpful. Thanks
Got my interview 3 days. I'll be back when I get that acceptance letter. This career is gonna really change my life, for the better
How’d it go?
?
Lie. Say you have. Dont go overboard But make sure you can back it up. Easier to ask forgiveness than permission.
Make sure you can wire receptacles and lights.
I need this answered before I decide to make my big move on becoming an apprentice/electrician. I have the same problem in my city.
Great advice for interviewing in any position; enjoy your channel and all the education you provide!
I have my apprenticeship interview next week, I’m extremely excited and hopeful!
How’d it go?? I have my interview in about a week from now, myself. Anyways, hope it went well!!
Wow Dustin. Great video. Your Jedi Skills are complete! My son Connor is interested in the trades. Either Electrician or carpentry. I was browsing videos that might help him. I will definitely share this one with him.
This video gave me soo much more confidence on my interview next Wednesday for HVAC! Im excited now
wow thank you this video was huge for me preparing for an union interview.
Took many pointers frm this video man. Landed my interview for an apprenticeship at weca. Came in cool calm and loaded with honesty lol thanks. Low Volt ⚡
This is best interview video you’re very nice and professional Sir thank you for your time. I have an interview coming so excited.
For The union I’m applying for they have 12 people interview at the same time. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you dustyn this video is generally great interview advice and I appreciate you ❤
Man I'm just running across this video and I have been working in the trade going on 4 years in April. I think I just got really lucky because my Uncle is a master electrician and has his own business so I have had the opportunity to work under him. Im pretty sure after watching alot of vids here on youtube, there have been certain experiences i think I didn't have compared to other apprentices. I'm out of San Antonio and have been looking for a group to be able to learn and network with. I most definitely have appreciated watching your vids. It looks like we might be around the same age so I think we have the same mind set and values. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
