As I live and breath, I never thought I would see Kelly tie an egg and a worm! I hate using either of these patterns- makes me feel kinda unclean, but they do work like crazy :-)

My speedy worm trick. I take a bic pen pull out the cartridge and back cap and feed my chenille through it. I clip that onto my vice with a binder clip aimed at the hook. Mount hook start wrap pull chenille out of the tube into the hook tie it in whip finish then cut my thread and cut my chenille 1/4" off the tip of the pen with the scissor in the same move. Into the box. New hook wrap pull cut. This keeps all the chenille orderly and when I have enough I unclip the pen from the cup. My egg dispenser is the same hollow pen tube stuffed with glo yarn just snip the tip a bit with a wire cutter for a bigger hole. These chenille holders also work like cheap bobbins particularly if you have a rotary vice.
Awesome! Such a quick easy way to build an egg. I love your attitude, if ya don't want to fish them fine... Never heard a trout bitch that it got caught on an egg pattern instead of a 20 adams...:) Love the channel Kelly!

Speaking of fishing them, do you fish them with a drop shot rig, euro style, or with an indicator and some split shot? I've seen people tying eggs lately with a bead to get them down, do you recommend that approach?

That is, where one wanted to search along the banks and vegetation. Using a small sized hook on one of these flies. And harvest a 'sample' of small bait fish and minnows. That are present in the river system. Oliver Edwards used to do it with insects. But he made streamer flies too. And he always started with his homework.
He would have his 'white' dishes. That he would add water to and lay on the river bank. To deposite the samples that he would catch. Into those white dishes. And he would study them then. To figure out their basic characteristics. Different sizes, different colors and so on.
And the good thing about this research. Is that one can wander down a river bank. With a tiny telescopic rod. Even a telescopic car aerial would do (as some kind of Tenkara rod). And search along for the bait fish. At different times of year. In order to try and get a picture. Of the creature life in the water. At different times of year. Including winter and early season.
Kelly did talk about. At one point. The basic fundamental lessons. Of fly tying. Which was learning how to 'set' the materials properly (once the material has not set properly, there is no way to ever fix it). There is another fundamental lesson. And it's a thing. That gets worse and worse. The more fly tying that one does. The more books. That one reads. The more fishing that one has behind one. The more that one is exposed to fishing in general. I call it. The pitfall of the fly tackle shop. Where one is confronted. With walls and walls of materials. In different colors. And in different types. Too much. To choose from.
And this is why. I would go back to Oliver Edwards again. As a fly tyer. He would never go forward, and launch into making flies. For his rivers. And not carry out his investigations. Of whatever insect or creature it was. That he wanted to create. In his flies. What advantage did it have? Well for one thing. It got one out of that trap. Of being confronted with the wall. Of fly tying materials (or what is far worse nowadays, are availability of too many fly tying materials on things like web sites). It's easy to get lost in that. And never find a way. Back out again.
As a new guy, I appreciate you and other guys "further down the trail" giving the tips and tricks that set us up for success!!
