I think the key to understand it is the story Maura tells the captain about her parents. It can be interpreted in two ways: either 1. her father is actually the creator of the simulation where he put her and her brother and everyone else in because he was obsessed with the human mind (I don't think so, there's some clues that Cairan is not her brother at all); OR 2. Maura is the program into which the creator's wife's mind has been transferred. Her "father" wanted to save her "mother" from some neurodegenerative disease, so he created a cage (simulation) for her mind in which he tries to cure her. Daniel may be the creator of this simulation trying to "wake up" Maura, but the simulation makes it difficult for him because it has become an AI and it won't let him take Maura out and unplug it.

I liked this show but I'm definitely getting tired of the current show drop model of 10 episodes of world building and setting up season 2. It's like we get half a season at a time. They are so worried about making a way for season 2 that they try to make confusing twists which don't help the story.

Olek's trauma- the landscape are early paraffin/kerosene mines. The taller structures in the back are precursors of today's oil wells. The place he emerges from is called 'kopanka' and it was a primitive shaft that was used to manually extract parrafin. It could be shallow but also quite deep. Olek speaks German- back then that would suggest he comes from southern part of Poland which was under Austrio-Hungarian rule - most likely Galicja, where paraffin/kerosene mining began in 19th century (it was after local man, Jan Józef Ignacy Łukasiewicz discovered its properties, and invented kerosene lamps). If you google 'wydobycie nafty XIX wiek' and look at images they are uncannigly similar to the scene we saw. He could also be from Bieszczady which could add interesting layers to his story. It is an area covering part of Carpathian mountains and has fascinating stories of a place where many cultures and historical groups coexisted peacefully until the end of 19th century so, well 1899...

One thing I noticed was the book "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin in Maura's room. I believe there were two insert shots in episode 6 where Maura goes into the tunnel and later Sebastion, Henry's servant. For those who don't know, this Novel is a feminist novel about rejecting marrital and parental life. There were more layers of it shown when Clemence rants about her dissatisfaction towards her marrital life then procedes to put on her husbands pants. In the novel, the main character ends up seeking freedom, by drowning herself in the ocean. Could this play a larger role in future seasons?

    • @g.h.7661

Yes, good catch!! The creators are a fan of feminist themes, if you’ve seen their other show Dark they also incorporated a few feminist literary elements including the Ancient Greek myth of Adriane, a story which, in the fictional universe of that show, had been turned into a stage play performed by one of the main female characters and was also basically played out onscreen in a very literal sense.

I think the point of the ship loop is to push humanity to evolve to make decisions out of logic and not emotion. Potentially emotion (love, hate, anger, jealousy…etc) is what pushed humanity to its downfall and now as they all travel to another planet, the ultimate goal is to evolve humanity away from that by changing how we think, perceive, and respond to the situations we are faced with. Maybe the only way out of the simulation is to make the correct decision and sink the ship, as they are told to do. This is the ultimate logical decision free of emotion. Henry says our emotions are what hold us back. I think it’s all a big experiment for humans to be better than we were before, and those who succeed can move on and colonize a new livable planet and not destroy it like we did earth.

The computer that Daniel programs in the 8th episode, drives down from the hatch in the ceiling in the machine room is a quantum computer - they look like this. They can calculate different realities simultaneously in superposition. For long space journeys it is assumed that it is best to put the crew in a twilight state (dream state) - in a kind of simulation, because otherwise they can not endure the long journey mentally and quantum computers would be suitable to calculate the dream state in real time. Only then ethical questions arise or what is real, what is simulated. Maybe the quantum computer is not working properly and has to be restarted or has not switched off in time. This would also explain why the passengers don't want to go back. Maybe the Earth doesn't exist anymore? Is it a generation spaceship? Or is everything only a simulation of a simulation...? I'm curious about the explanation in the 3rd season.

The only thing you didn't mention was the other modern meaning for the word Kerberos. Wherein, "Kerberos is a computer network security protocol that authenticates service requests between two or more trusted hosts across an untrusted network, like the internet. It uses secret-key cryptography and a trusted third party for authenticating client-server applications and verifying users' identities." I'd argue the creators are certainly pointing to this meaning as well as the Greek Myth. Your pointing to Prometheus' punishment and the connection regarding the liver and emotions by the Ancient Greeks was brilliant and adds depth to the story being told by the film-makers.

This suggests Olek is going to America with dreams to join his brother and get rich working in the booming oil industry which started around 1860 and by 1899 it was a huge growth industry where fortunes are made. I'm confused about this whole episode of 1899... what did they all see? Olek was at that point dead in the Kerberos simulation, so it was not his memory, right? So was it a glimpse of his "life" in one of the previous simulations that Ling Yi got to see because Daniel messed up connections between some simulations?

I agree with you that the simulation's purpose is to awaken them based on a goal; but not when they leave emotions behind. I believe that the simulation aims to heal the traumas of humanity's survivors and that the show's based on sth like the triune brain theory (Dark was also obsessed with trinities). So, in a nutshell:
Henry represents the logical part of the brain, he scorns emotion, can affect the simulation directly, stays in the control room where he observes everything and gives orders.
Daniel represents emotion. He is constantly driven by it, regrets hurting others, affects the simulation through tricks and hacks, desperately wants Maura to wake up and to never forget some things.
Elliot represents instinct, he speaks and acts only when Maura feels threatened. Logic and emotions try to manipulate him for their own goals and he is the one holding the pyramid which can actually wake up Maura.
So, maybe the crew did horrible things to survive Earth's catastrophe and Maura may be behind the scientific discovery which led to it. Or perhaps pursued it because she could not let go of her deceased child (only Logic acknowledges this). Many interactions between Maura, Henry, Elliot, and Daniel make sense if you follow this line of thought. I fail to see where it could lead in season 2, apart from it beginning again on the ship, but from another character's perspective.

    3 things:
1)I think that the people who received a letter are actually real people, while all the others are just AI Characters.
    2) Also, I think this whole thing is a Humanity Rescue mission. I think that the space ship wants to bring all those people to a destination to start all over again.
    3) I think Daniel and Elliot arent humans. They are also AI programms and I think Maura placed them there on purpose to help her to stay on track and to wake up at a certain point.
What I ask myself the most is:
    1) Why did Daniel use his device to "kill" the little Danish girl?
    2) Why do all those people get mind controlled to jump from the ship?

I think the show is about lost explorers trying to find earth again. The alchemical symbol for earth is an upside down pyramid with a line drawn across it. That symbol is all over the show. Also every passenger is written a letter telling them what is lost will be found again.
Them crawling inside those dark holes represent how many times the ship(s) have entered black holes and now they are lost.
The ships main quantum computer AI needs everyone’s brain linked in a simulation to form a hive mind so that it can figure out how to navigate the black holes the ship has gone through to find a pathway home to earth. The different simulations are just the number of times the AI has tried to find that path.
I say ships because there will be a Kerberos space ship as well as a third space ship we have not been shown yet. Maybe Prometheus and Kerberos made it through one black hole while the third ship is either lost or left behind. Or maybe it’s the other way around and the third ship is the key.
The villain doesn’t want them to find earth again for what reason I have not figured out yet.
Daniel is definitely not Maura’s husband. He might be the brother and the captain is the husband. Or Daniel might be the AI represented as the father/husband/child
Or maybe the space ships are just the next simulation 🤣
I need season 2, need to know what happens.

    • @callmeOZ96
      @callmeOZ96 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I think the simulations in season 1 were to find the prometheus (in sim), which gives the kerberos in reality the coordinates to find the prometheus in reality. The prometheus in reality was lost in space, Maura and everyone else was on it. Maura, from the prometheus, entered sim to the kerberos to locate themselves. Which is why in the sim Maura and Captain Eyk found their names on the prometheus passenger list. (This makes Eyk the captain of the real prometheus btw).
The Villain is more than likely Maura's brother Ciaran. He usurped Maura while she was in sim and wiped her memory.
I don't think Daniel is Ciaran but it's possible I guess.

The ship is a simulation thus the computer interpretation is better suited for it than the hound of hell with three heads which in German is actually spelled "Zerberus". It's a German ship company so you would expect it to be spelled like that for this series unless they in fact wanted to imply a more modern meaning as a computer term. Friese and bo Odar have ideas for two more seasons, with increased complexity compared to season 1.[2] The planned three-season structure stems from Friese's and bo Odar's film background, where films have three acts.[7] The first season served to establish the theme and characters and pose big questions.[7] If ordered by Netflix, the second season would explain the symbology of the triangles, and Maura's brother would be an important character.[7] bo Odar described this second act as "all about the fun and games, where you play with the theme, and maybe get a little bit more megalomaniacal and crazy, and then resolve it in the third season into a hopefully satisfying resolution."[7]
SOOOOO HYPED for the next seasons, no question Netflix ordering them ! 🎉🎉😂

    • @AnchitaPotumanchi

I think that's because its meant to be a 3 season arc. The writers have already mapped out all the seasons and the ending of the story, which is why they didn't want to answer all the questions in the first season itself. It's similar to how the story was told in Dark which is by the same people and also had a 3 season arc. There's a lot of questions and confusion and suspense throughout. When some questions are answered, immediately new ones arise and not every answer is given in the same season. You'll notice they also didn't explore the backstories of Angel, Ramiro, Clemence, and Olek. It's all to create intrigue for what comes next and by the end of the last season, every single thing will make sense.

Seeing the dead girl was kinda the last straw for the bald guy with scars on his face (I forget his name), who was already doubting Captain's decisions. And it also angered the Danish people in 3rd class, so they were easier to convince to revolt. What I don't get is why does Daniel need to maintain the sequence of events? Why does it all need to happen that way? What if they didn't revolt and followed the Captain?

(Someone grewing up with them would be 20-30 in 1999) So I think it will ultimately end in a triology, making 1999 the last season!
    The Song examples:
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane 1967
Child in Time -Deep Purple 1969
Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen 1984
The Reaper - Blue Öyster Cult 1976
The Wizard - Black Sabbath 1970
Adding on top of that! the episode names are so vague! I wonder if the episode names just repeat with a different meaning! I mean in the first Episode of Season 2 we will start again with "The Ship", because we are on a Spaceship! So maybe in Season 3 1999 we will Land of a Modern Boat (or a flying ship?) on the Ocean again!

I agree with you. The technical equipment is from the seventies, the computers in Henry's room and the computerdisplay and type of letters in the spaceship also. 1423 passengers plus 550 crew is 1973. So 1973 could be the real date.

ciaran being an ai makes a lot of sense!
Since, we never (as far as we know) see Ciaran in the simulation.
And when Maura confronts her father and asks "where is Ciaran", he says, "that hardly matters"
Would be a very nice season 2 twist.

    • @daniellevaughn4598
      @daniellevaughn4598 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Possible, but I don't think so. He said he was the last person she should worry about. If what Daniel says is true. That Cairan hijacked the simulation, then what the Father said makes sense. The whole time Maura has thought her Father has done something to her brother, when all along, her brother is the one that has them trapped. He does refer to Cairan as her brother more then once. When talking about Seekers and Avoiders, he said contrary to her brother, Maura was born a Seeker.

All of the passengers memories also can't be their own memories, which I find strange. The simulation put them on a ship in 1899 then made them revisit the past traumas that the simulation created.

One thing that makes me question the spaceship being just another simulation are the 'Pods' that were holding everyone. That could be seen as just another 'inception device' like the Chair that Henry kept strapping Maura into in the other simulation. We see Maura waking up in the pod (along with everyone else being in one) so, obviously they had to also be put into them at some point. This is just like the function of the chair in the asylum simulation----i think it's just another conduit.

1899, is very like a series called Life on Mars. The final episode of Life on Mars is the same, in a rocket to mars, awakening from a simulation. This situation is different, but there are similitudes like the conflict between father and son. Also the UK version of 2006, the soundtrack is from David Bowie, as the final episode of 1899. The multiple plots in 1899, suspense, each character with their traumas, and all the unanswered themes are an improvement in this story. Visually beautiful, some steampunk elements, are very phenomenal. So, I wish to see a continuation.

Why did Maura's husband kill the Danish girl, the first person, who died on the ship? It was heavily implied that he did it, he apologized to her first.
