    G'kar is one of the best characters in fiction. And the G'kar/Lando relationship throughout the series was one of the best ever written.

      @@oldgoat142 And the thing is, ALL of the character interactions were that good. Londo and G'kar just stand out more because of how intense their relationship was and how directly tied to the actual larger story/greater world dynamics of the B5 universe it was.

      @@OverworkedITGuy Agreed. Michael Garibaldi typifies the complexity of many of the characters. Susan Ivanova and her dealings with PsyCorp is another example, but you're right, G'kar/Londo stand out because it affected not just them, but their cultures and the impact on the wider conflict.
      The actors, in particular Peter Jurassic and Andreas Katsulas, were simply outstanding.

  • @Bastion83
    @Bastion83 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    The two men who played these roles embodied them completely, masterfully. I Often think about their conversations, Londo's certainty that he and G'kar would literally be the death of each other, the hate between them, G'kar's evolution as a character from a cold, utterly militaristic man to one more focused on ending the suffering of his people, as well as recognizing the threat of the Shadows and Londo's realization that he was a villain, and a chess piece manipulated by the Shadows, and what he did with those realizations as they chipped away at him. Londo and G'kar's stories were beautifully tragic. I also found it odd that I constantly rooted for Londo, not his actions most of the time, but whenever he did something honestly noble or simply nice. I wanted badly for him to rise up and become something better than he was being for much of the show. Peter Jurasik and Andreas Katsulas were masters in their craft working with talented writers. I miss those days.

    • @andrewmalinowski6673
      @andrewmalinowski6673 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Bastion83 Both actors played multi-dimensional characters who also wanted the best for their people, Katsulas played G'Kar not only as a seasoned warrior and stategist but also someone capable of great compassion. The actions Londo took from S1-3 showed that he had a conscience, but he was always so focused on the "big picture" of making the Centauri a galactic superpower again after their fall from grace, the two best quotes to show this were; "You want to see the diplomatic personnel homeworld has sent me, this (gestures to Vir), this is it" when he tells Garibaldi that he was sent only one attache and "when you arrived, Vir, I was jealous. Because you had come so far and were still so innocent." One scene, having seen himself as a once-great Centauri diplomat he's displeased to have essentially been treated as nothing but a minor "public servant" and the other having turned a corner is trying to support and comfort Vir after he kills Cartagia and knows that what he'd done will always weigh on him.

      Nobody in Babylon 5 was perfect. G'Kar started Londo on his path of hatred when he authorized the attack on a Centauri outpost. Sinclair personally warned G'Kar things would spin out of control. Londo's related family was taken in the attack but later released. Londo hated the impotence of the Republic during the incident. That worked perfectly later when a Mr. Morden showed up.

My sons are now big fans as well and it's become our family "after xmas" routine to get the snacks, drinks in the fridge and let's watch B5. We even have times where we'll say lines from the show to make a point about something utterly unrelated to B5 but is profound enough to matter. The show was FULL of excellent wisdom. and just as i thought i can't love your channel more, you drop this about my number one fav SciFi-show.
    I had the chance to meet the whole cast at Vor-Con back in 1998, when i participated at the World Championship of the CCTC Game with the same name as the show and stayed at the same hotel as the cast.
    Not only did they present such a great chemistry on screen, they did so ofscreen, too...
    with Bill Mumy playing pranks on Patrica Tallman during their photo shoot to Andrea Thompson (Talia Winters ) painting devils horns and a goatie on the card of Michael Garribaldi for me with glee and later when i showed it to Jerry Doyl,e he laught out loud, this cast just brought us so much joy and fun.
    Also Julie Caitlin Brown ( Na'Toth) is just such a peach. I had the pleasure to explain the game to her little brother on the convention ( of cause i had no idea of him being her brother at this time ) and after about 1 hour of us both playing and having fun, she appeared at his side and just sat down with us, just like any normal person would. We hat a little chat and then we all went our way...
    a year later, when i and 2 friends of mine volunteered to teach the game on the biggest gaming fair open to the public in Essen, Germany ( my home country of cause 😂) and the three of us went to the hotel of the games publishers to get our exhibition passes for the convention, we had to wait for about an hour. The hotel desk attendee asked us to wait at the bar and we of cause agreed enthusiastically... and the first thing i heard, when we entered the bar was a female shout of my name and then Julie came right to us hugging me, it still flashes me, that she not only remembered my face but also my name after 1 year and only talking to me for about 10 minutes.
    Unbeknown to us, the publishers hired her, Claudia Christian ( Susan Ivanova ) and Robert Russler ( Lt. Warren Keffer ) to promote the card game...
    thx for getting me down on the memory lane of one of the most precious experiences of my life...
    Greetings from Germany

      @@SogoTX thx for taking your time to get on that ride on memory lane with me.
      when the Babylon 5 TCG dropped in Germany a friend of mine reached out to Precidence, the game developer, who had called for volunteers to orginaze tournaments all over the world ( their Ranger program 🤣) and my buddy was then in charge of the German competitions ( we had 4 major cities where tournaments happend, Munich, Hamburg, Dortmund and Nurembeerg ( my home town ) and later he distributed the material support of Precidence to all of the European Rangers and not very surprisingliy the first German championship then was held in Erlangen, a neighbor town of mine.
      To my surprise i had won that with a flawless victory streak with a Narn Military deck and to a much greater surprise the first place prize was access to the World Champion final tournament in Pomona, flight, hotel and catering all inclusive 😍🤩. there at thursday and friday the qualifying tournament to fill the "end round" where held. As a national champion me, the British, the US, Canadian, Australian and if i remember right South Korean champions all had 2 days to enjoy themselves at the convention and it was on friday i met Julie Caitlin Brown and her brother.

      @@belegur8108 That is so cool! When I ran the WOTC Castle at Gen-Con 2000, we debuted Dungeons and Dragons 2.0, and it was incredible! I sold over $250,000 of product in three days on 4 rickety old cash registers. I also got paid in product, so I had 6 cases each of the new Player's Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide books. i took them around the Con and used them as trade bait. Needless to say, I was quite popular with the other vendors. I scored SO many games that weekend. 3 factory sets of Star Trek Disc Wars (Called, "Red Alert") . A COMPLETE collection of ALL the books and miniatures of the Babylon 5 Wars strategy minis game from Agents of Gaming, (including an introduction to JMS, so he could sign my main rulebook and Peter Woodward signed his character's B5 TCG card for me). One of each of the main factions' decks of the B5 TCG, and a sheet of 9 cards that were autographed by some of the cast members , and a TON of other swag... Good times! It is also one of my most fond memories as a Gamer. It is good to share those happier times with others that were there in the same era...

    The Babylon 5 novel "Blood Oath" has one character think how the entire Narn homeworld was one big prison - the Circles or classes were stratified like castes so it was becoming almost a fossilized society.. same could be said of the hierarchies on Centari Prime.. both cultures were more alike than would admit to.. and were structured like that before the century war. Both stuck in their ways then and without a future as Kosh said..

    There was great chemistry with all the cast. Whether you call it Londo and G'Kar or Jurasik and Katsulas' chemistry there are so many good scenes. A moment that stands out for me is before G'Kar finds out about Londo's betrayal and he and buys him a drink, toasting to the Emperor's health and 'Perhaps' to Londo's. The look in Londo's eye as he realises the man standing in front of him need not be an enemy and can be reasoned with. Who is not merely made of bitterness and hate. G'Kar's reaction to the betrayal is heart-wrenching.

      That was a great S1 scene, because G'Kar knew the old emperor was willing to allow the Narn to become a free species untethered to the Centauri. As he praised the emperor G'Kar was for the first time not resentful of the Centauri as he was seeing a clear future for his people, it also nicely foreshadows how he and Londo could become equals not tethered to each other by mutual hatred

    Love the contrast with G'Kar and Londo being the premier representatives of their people, although G'Kar told Mr. Morden; "The Centauri mined my world, I want to salt their soil" was because he'd been irritated by the periodic question and after he gives into his anger and says what he wants done he calms down enough to wave it off as an idle threat. Londo had felt as if his people had once been the preeeminent race on the galactic stage wished to see their return to glory, but to see the use of mass drivers on the Narn homeworld and realize the woman he'd begun to love (Adira Tyree) being killed by another Centauri noble allowed him to form an alliance of convenience with G'Kar to take out a common enemy.
    The best way to encapsulate their species' animosity, after being turned into a "war criminal" and before leaving the council chamber; "There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against that power, governments and armies and tyrants cannot stand. The Centauri learned this lesson once, we will teach it to them again. Though it take a thousand years...we will be free." Coming together in mutual desire to seek justice against Cartagia they work together against a common foe and when leaving Londo says; "They have learned that we are leaving and that soon Narn will be free. On that part, good riddance, it was always more trouble than it was worth. It will cause me no amount of trouble back home but, I gave G'Kar my word. I set them free, in nreturn for his help. I will keep my promises."

    Oh it goes far deeper than simple hatred for each other for past wartime and occupation. There was the burgeoning friendship that was shattered just it was forming when the Centauri invaded Narn again. Both had such great chemistry and yet their conflict made their characters and races so much more nuanced. Two opposing sides, almost a nice allegory to slavery; G'Kar was raised seeing the brutality of those who placed themselves above the "primitive" race they abused, and Londo was used to seeing the Narn as being little more than "beasts" until having to face each other as equals.
      Growing from rivals to grudging allies and finally friends, even if neither realized they were mor alike than they wanted to admit

It shows off how G'Kar knew that being imprisoned was only going to make the Narn more willing to sacrifice themselves just for the sake of dying free, this quote could also be used in DS9 relating to the Bajoran-Cardassian conflict

    "They should be pitied, they are on a course for self destruction" - applies to the Narn, they learned nothing as their attack on Centauri Prime proved. Wouldn't surprise me if both were kicked out the alliance in centuries and the Centauri ruled Narn on and off again.

    J. Michael Straczynski was a genus when it can to the writing of Babylon 5 so many topics hit on and a lot of hidden messages something only sci fi can do. I can see what pisses the Narn's off all that death by the Centari for what resources and to expand there empire its a reoccurring theme in Humanoids we are never satisfied with what we have but as G'Quan would say peace is the only way and G'Kar said it best the Centari should be pitied they are a dying people

    G'Kar and Londo are one of the greatest duos in film. Right up there with Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, Martin and Lewis, Bing and Bob!!!

    B5 was quite good. With the current condition of Hollywood, I hope they don't strip mine this IP too.

      there are so many great ones in that show... and what this show did, was giving us bad ass female characters, that rocked the universe and gave us some of the best lines in the show:
      Commander Susan Ivanova: No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's always a boom tomorrow. What? Look, somebody's got to have some damn perspective around here! Boom. Sooner or later. BOOM!
      Delenn ( when threatened by an Earth Alliance cruiser captain to leave the Babylon 5 space: Why not? Only one human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari Fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else!

      @@belegur8108 Yeah you’re right. A lot of great casting. That’s one thing that could hurt a remake, there are big shoes to fill in the casting department.
