"This Charming Man" was released as the group's second single in October 1983.
The single was re-issued in 1992, reaching number 8 on the UK singles chart. Mojo magazine journalists placed the track at number one on their 2008 "50 Greatest UK Indie Records of All Time" feature.
Lyrics
Punctured bicycle
On a hillside desolate
Will nature make a man of me yet?
When in this charming car
This charming man
Why pamper life's complexity
When the leather runs smooth
On the passenger's seat?
I would go out tonight
But I haven't got a stitch to wear
This man said "it's gruesome
That someone so handsome should care"
Ah ! A jumped-up pantry boy
Who never knew his place
He said "return the ring"
He knows so much about these things
He knows so much about these things
I would go out tonight
But I haven't got a stitch to wear
This man said "it's gruesome
That someone so handsome should care"
La, la-la, la-la, la-la, this charming man
Oh, la-la, la-la, la-la, this charming man
Ah ! A jumped-up pantry boy
Who never knew his place
He said "return the ring"
He knows so much about these things
He knows so much about these things
He knows so much about these things

That line hit me hard after a neighbour and friend introduced it to me as an an awkward 16 yr old boy. I had never heard anything like it before and Morrisseys honesty and openness charmed me instantly. I had actually had a punctured tire on my 60’s-70’s blue Peugeot bicycle on a hillside in cobble hill BC Canada just a few weeks before. No charming man came around though, just an old Dutch farmer on a Massey Ferguson tractor that sneezed at me as he passed me by. YOUR FACE HAS FALLEN SAD NOW
This song so good that my little brother fall into a lava tube that somehow had water flow
Johnny Marr. That opening riff. The whole song. Incredible. One of the most underrated guitarists. As a guitarist myself I can say that soloing is infinity easier than the complex chord based riffs Johnny is known for. It's easier to play one note at a time than rapidly switching chords. Also Morrissey. The most gifted and hilarious lyricist and a great singer. He is oscar wilde born again as a rock singer
The reason I started listening to the Smiths was the guitar playing. Along with the bass and drumming. It’s only as I’ve gotten older that I started listening to Morrissey’s lyrics properly.
Extremely underrated and I'm a Glam metal shredder I believe he's one of the most influential guitar players of our time in my humble opinion
I've spent the last two weeks learning all the guitar parts to this song. Just brilliant little riffs and arpeggios that constantly move along and fit perfectly. Genius. And the fact that he can rip them off so easily baffles me.
it was over after they broke up
@@jamestolson2526 yeah i like to play jazzy, jam-bandy type of stuff, lots of soloing. To me, soloing is relatively easy compared to good rhythm guitar playing like Marr. Although the phrasing is pretty different, im sure the stuff i like to play isnt too dissimilar to what you play. I mess around with a lot of modal and pentatonic riffs, and im a decent player when it comes down to that kind of stuff, and non-musicians are often particulary impressed, not realizing its as simple as it actually is. I totally suck as a rhythm guitar player though.

Why is everybody trying to call this Hipster, like its some kind of genre rather than a subculture. Its alternative rock. Just enjoy the music.
Indie is the word your looking for
I always thought Indie was a dumb term, because you could apply the term to anything involving independently produced music (Hardcore Punk, Post-Punk, and most early alternative rock bands were signed to independent labels). I perfer to use the term alternative ONLY for that reason, because the Smiths were an Alternative to most of the mainstream music acts of the 1980s, and they had the jangley guitar sound that was at the time being used by alternative rock pioneers: R.E.M.
nice profile picture
+Max Seuberlich Its just short for independent. Meaning many of the bands belonged to independent labels.
Kevin Thomas I know that. But technically you could throw hardcore punk bands like Black Flags and Circle Jerks under that label because they were on independent labels. That's my biggest gripe with the term Indie.
You can literally apply it to ANY rock music that has been produced and released on an independent label.
