Big waves at the Frying Pan Tower!

  • Out on the tower when the storms come in, there’s two things you can do. Fly off before it hits or hunker down and get out the mop! This last weekend with the benefit of weather forecasting, we knew it would be a wet and wild but safe time on the tower. We continued working on projects but took a few minutes out of the day to go see the big waves below!
    When you come work on the tower as a volunteer, you pitch in however your skill set allows. Some organize, some weld, but all work to help get the tower back in shape to last another 50 years!
    You can clearly see that the crosspieces at the 12’ above water level are failing! One is missing altogether and all will need replacement asap! Rather than being overwhelmed, we are tackling this like eating an elephant… one bite at a time! Help us eat these projects with your monthly support or as a volunteer or ecotourist and we’ll get it done!
    Richard
    Please consider becoming a monthly Supporter by swapping the equivalent of 1 cup of fancy coffee per month! Sign up where it says “Supporter” on FaceBook or hop over to fptower.org/do... to make a donation or buy restoration supporting merchandise!
    To Volunteer …
    See FPTower.org/volunteer to cover a portion of your helicopter flight and we’ll cover the rest including your stay, meals, tools, and fun activities. (Nature provides the adventures!)
    As an Ecotourist …
    Come visit as an Ecotourist and watch the sunrise and sunsets in a beautiful setting all while any proceeds help us achieve the restoration goal! Learn more and secure your booking at, fptower.org/pr...
    Thank you again for your support! ❤️

    Just another idea which I think would awesome and could increase profits. Adding a Scuba diving platform will get scuba enthusiast to come to the tower because it seams like when the water is calm, it would be an excellent place to dive. Just a thought, I like scuba diving and think it would be fun.

      i keep asking him about this (well, twice) on FB and he never answered (but he may have just not seen the questions). Doesn't exactly inspire confidence. I started thinking about it more when I was watching a YT about a bridge collapse and they talked about how rust could compromise bridge supports. oh well, if it survived hurricanes and 32ft waves as the vid says it's probably plenty safe in calmer seas. at least for some time lol....

    Wow if the cross supports are that bad how are the four main pillars

    • @FPTower
      @FPTower  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      great question! The four main legs are actually VERY solid and jacketed to a thickness of 3" from 12' above the water all the way to the bedrock. There, internal pilings were driven deep into the bedrock and the legs were then filled with cement. They are the best-preserved structure! Everything is tied to them and they are why the tower has lasted through some huge hurricanes! Richard

      @FPTower  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Tom, I'm of the belief that if enough people would each make a small donation we could buy the metal, hire the barge, and pay for the fuel to run the welding equipment to replace it! It's a doable task even if daunting! Richard FPTower.org/donate if you want to help :)

    • @FPTower

      Definitely will replace the crosspipes but the legs themselves are actually very solid still. We need to get cost estimates from a BIG rig company that has experience in just such... and be sitting down when we learn just how much it will cost :0

    What kind of amazing drone are you using for that footage that is stable in such windy conditions?

    • @FPTower
      @FPTower  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      lol! It's a GoPro Max 360 camera that is hanging off a line with a 5lb weight to help stabilize it. The GoPro software is the amazing part because it allows the camera to be spinning, bouncing, and flinging everywhere but keeps the view steady! If you look at the drops of water on the outer lens you'll see the actual camera movement. Wild! Richard
