It really shows how out of touch Trudeau and his government are - you can't do something like this without the infrastructure first and we all know Canada doesn't have the infrastructure for this many EVs. Keep kicking the problem down the line when it takes several yrs to over a decade to implement a solution to the climate crisis because there's no political will to do something ahead. Some yrs ago, the UN climate forum gave us less than a dozen yrs(2035 deadline) to get our act together before it reaches the point of no return for the 2 degrees rise in global temperature. It's already some yrs wasted and we're still kicking down the timeline of doing anything a couple decades later(2050) when it should had been done within the next several yrs. Maybe what we need is a pause to look into whether or not that is a good use of the land and resources. In some of the U.S. states (like Massachusetts and Virginia) they are cutting down forests to put up wind and solar farms. That is the height of stupidity that the so called green energy movement is responsible for.
And while we are supposed to cut back on our emissions, China is building as many as 300 new coal fired power plants there and in other countries. Germany even shut down their nuclear power and went back to coal. Alberta isn't even a drop in the bucket on the world scale.

@@pambp5978 Yes, they require maintenance, but not total replacement. Entire wind farms are dismantled and rebuilt and some abandoned in disrepair.
Quote: "I thought they were cutting forests on the east coast to use as bio-fuels, wish you all could keep your stories straight". It isn't about getting the story straight, it is just the facts about what is being done. You do realize that it isn't one or the other, but they do both. They do in fact cut down forests for bio-fuel and cut down forests for wind and/or for solar. It was left wing film maker Michael Moore that exposed the bio-fuel debacle in his documentary.
      Quote from American Thinker:
Since 2010, over 5,000 acres of natural and working lands have been destroyed for solar development in Massachusetts, resulting in the emission of over half a million metric tons of CO₂- more than the annual emissions of 100,000 passenger cars,’ Mass Audobon [sic] stated in a summary of its study with Harvard Forest.
‘Under current siting practices, thousands of acres of forests, farms, and other carbon-rich landscapes are being converted to host large-scale solar,’ the report stated. End of quote.
You can find other sites saying similar things if you search for it.
Scotland and Germany have also cut down forests for wind or solar farms. Just do a search. Lots of info on that.
Then there is this from the Virginial Government:
A recent study found that forest and agricultural lands are the most likely land types to be impacted by solar facilities being built. The authors also found that over half of the acreage disturbed in Virginia for solar panels to date was previously forested lands. Dec 6, 2022
As for oil and gas taking up farmland. That is true, but once a well is dry, it is shut down and the farmland reclaimed. With wind and solar they would be permanent unless decommissioned. Oil and gas wells also take up far less land than they used to. Rather than one well per site, they can now drill horizontally from a single location rather than having several separate well sites. I have seen well sites with 8 or 10 wells in the area that would have had only one or two before.
You would also have to compare how much land would be needed for wind and/or solar compared with the same amount of land needed for the equivalent amount of energy from oil and gas. A single gas well will provide way more energy than a single wind turbine, while both would take up about the same amount of farmland.
Not saying that wind and solar can't have their place, but they certainly can't be the only forms of electricity generation, for the obvious reasons.

Yes because becoming a landlocked country with no access to export routes that don't involve being fleeced by our neighbours would be so much better.
And just the cost to set up our own military alone would top $10bn a year. Now add policing, healthcare (which already costs $15bn) - without the health transfers from the federal gov't - and sundry other items.
Dream on. An independent Alberta would be an economic disaster. If we took Sask & Man with us it would be even worse. Learn some math. Read a book.

You need to take you own advice and read the information on how much Alberta alone contributes to the Canadian economy. We have billions of surplus every year. That number is only increasing, plus the billions of dollars in the Heritage Trust Fund.

Take it a step more rediculous - try to power just trucks with solar or wind. It takes 10 solar panels in intense sun - all day - to move a Tesla Semi 1mile. If you want enough panels to charge it in 1 hour to move 1 mile that takes 100 solar panels. A long haul truck drives 800 miles a day. You'd need 80,000 solar panels in intense sun in 4 groups of 20,000 each to recharge 1 truck to go 200 miles to the next station. There are 3 million long haul trucks in the USA alone - total panels required 80,000 x 3 million = 240 billion. 20 times that for all heavy long haul trucks world wide 5 trillion. Then all the shorter haul heavies 10 trillion. Current production 1 billion annually. So that would us take 10,000 years.10x solar production 1000 years, 100x current production 100 years - just for trucks.
