I never comment on YT videos but I had to say thank you for this video. I spent all year trying to find & decorate a perfect bible to use. Spent so much money that I really didn't have on bibles, bible cases, notebooks, study guides, pens, etc. Then I wanted to make a prayer bible because that was the thing everyone else was doing, and I ended up never diving into scripture like I wanted. I wasted so much time and energy on a never-ending project instead of just opening the bible and reading. Jesus called the apostles where they were in life. He didn't ask them to become perfect before following Him. He just wanted them to follow Him. Sometimes social media can make you feel like you need to have all these other things or have this certain aesthetic first before you can properly read and experience God's word. While all the extra stuff is fun and beautiful, it isn't necessary. I definitely fell into that trap this year and let it keep me from focusing on what is most important - Jesus.
@@MelWhite013 you and I both!!! You said it perfectly. I too found myself working on never ending projects. It was always something new and time consuming. I pray we all do better and focus on Jesus 💜🙏🏾

I started with 1 Bible a few months ago and now have 7. I started feeling convicted when I started looking for a small bible for a prayer bible.First of all why do I need a prayer bible, part of my concern was praying out of context. But, you can pray scripture and for needs by having a list of scripture in my bible. I have ended up with 4 study bibles. 2 journaling bibles, one of them is for coloring. And just a plain bible. I bought all of the new to me bibles (6 of them) at thrift stores so the cost isn’t the issue. And I also started buying all the stuff…pens, highlighters, post it notes, etc. I have been studying more but how much more if I dedicated the time I was spending looking for more stuff actually studying the Bible. I’m gathering up things I don’t need and donating back to the thrift stores. I’m happy God has convicted me so I can work on this. I’m sorry that others are also going through this but together through prayer we will come out victorious on the other side. Love and prayers to you all!
WOW WOW WOW... so many deep lessons here. the heart is willing but the flesh is weak. you hit VERY important root cause of this Bible obsession (one I have as well)... DOPAMINE... this is also the same reason we are obsessed with our phones and social media. we get a dopamine hit every. single. time. someone likes our post, makes a comment, or we see a cute puppy/cat/panda, etc video. there is a chemical response in our brains. Thank you Charlene for being vulnerable and sharing your struggles. you are NOT alone. I also applaud you for not continuing to contribute to the problem and you rather be a part of the solution. You are a gift and treasure from God. Love you my sister in Christ❤❤❤❤
I can TOTALLY relate to what you are saying. There was a time when I had as many as 50+ Bibles. Every single one of them was going to be 'the one'...the last one I would need to buy. But, then the novelty of the shiny new Bible wore off and I needed to have the thrill of buying and waiting for a new one to come! This went on for years and my Bible collection got bigger and bigger and I was no more 'satisfied' than I was when I started. Long story short, when I finally woke up to what I was doing, I gradually donated a lot of my Bibles to thrift stores and my collection slowly dwindled. I still have way more than I need, but I tend to talk myself out of buying a new Bible now...which is really kind of boring and depressing, to be honest... but at least my bank account is better off! Every time now when I start to get excited about a new Bible that's come out, I remind myself that it's not going to say anything different than the Bibles I already have, so what's the point of getting it? I do miss the dopamine hit, though!!!😁😄
I have always collected books. I may regret buying a cookbook, quilting book, or pattern-but never a Bible. I am glad you are facing the real reason you have been buying Bibles. I had to face 25 years of purchases when I moved last spring and downsized. I do think more about purchases of all kinds now, just to be a better steward of the time, money, and living space God has given me.
I hope you dont stop showing your bibles, because its a good way for us to make a decision which is the best bible to pick for ourselves that we will truly use.
It is actually very comforting to know I am not alone in this struggle. Before you would even finish a sentence on the emails and confirmation numbers, I would finish the sentence for you. I have gone into tremendous debt trying to find the ‘right’ Bible. It has been a several year struggle and found I had more bible on my shelf than I did in my heart. I am having to learn to eliminate ‘options’ by getting rid of some of them because the more I have, the harder it is for me to stick to one. Back when I first became a Christian, I had one Bible and a highlighter. My life was completely transformed . With just those. I have admitted to the coveting and greed. Now, to quit practicing it. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. It truly is incredibly comforting knowing others are finding things in their heart and life that just don’t belong there either. *Purple is also my favorite color 😂*
This video is vital I’m learning to slow down with buying bibles, I will say I still purchase books to help me study the Bible. In 2023 and 2024 alone I can say I purchased between 15+ bibles most were from eBay but I realized how irresponsible I am with my finances. A couple of months ago I purchased a KJV Life Application Study Bible and due to my vision problems I have to get the Large Print Edition which was $50 and unfortunately I ruined it by tabbing it, trying to remove the tabs caused most of the pages to be torn so now I have to fix it and give it away once I purchase my new one I won’t be buying too many more bibles. I’m so thankful you were open and honest about an issue most of us Christian’s are too afraid to admit I had to limit watching certain content creators because of this.
So happy to have found your channel, my idolatry and covetousness is what brought me to the cross as it was destroying my soul, marriage and life, but after becoming a Christian it was so easy to walk away from material items. Then I started finding the world of premium Bibles and that was it for me 😢. The same thing that brought me to the cross is what I’m doing again!!! I’m so discouraged right now so hearing your testimony is healing ❤️🩹
Very brave of you to share these struggles. I am about to read thru the Bible for the first time this year and making plans for next year. It really is intimidating to see all of the TH-cam videos on complicated journaling, notebooks, prayer bibles, expensive multi-book bible studies, reading plans, scripture writing, SOAP, inductive, SPECTRUM, SHEMA, and other study methods not to mention all of the folks who have materials, books with coordinating guides, classes, workshops, Patreon channels that you can end up spending a fortune on and a ton of time. I had two old KJV bibles that are so hard to read that I bought an ESV study bible to use with the Heart Dive channel. Anyway, now it’s so heavy that I bought a She Reads Truth just for something to read and carry. I also bought a used Archaeological Study bible so now I feel like I have the translations I want and a good coverage for study. I’m done for a while but it is fun to shop and dream. I just don’t pull the trigger😎
You brought up such an excellent point. The vloggers that have all the bells and whistles.....like that's great, but how in depth are they truly studying?
Try listening to an audio Bible. Follow along or not. I have tried the ESV and. the NIV and enjoyed both but the NIV more. Get earbuds and you can listen while you work.
I can relate to this so much! I did all the things!! Buying and buying.. not just bibles but supplies ( pens, journals, highlighters etc). I started out with 1! Ended up with 10 bibles & several commentary books & multiple sets of highlighters.. Only was using one Bible, one set of highlighters & commentary. I got overwhelmed so fast I was too distracted by all the things. I sat down one day put the Bible’s on the table and picked what I enjoyed. I immediately got rid of several I didn’t use. 3 months later I did the same thing, however these are in another room. If I don’t reach for them in 3 months they will be donated. I went through all my supplies as well. I also am thinking of taking all the Bible related content out of my Amazon so I’m not tempted to click and buy! I asked for 1 commentary book for Christmas(I’ve wanted it for over a year). In 2025 I’m feeling like I’m supposed to rest in his word! I’m supposed to go slow, back to basics! I follow a pastor that goes Vers by Vers through the entire Bible. I watch 1 -2 video a day. I’m using my commentary after words and getting so much information. I’m really enjoying my time with God! GODS the shining light of the Bible. NOT the brown amazon package on the porch. I’m also decluttering my house in 2025! Why do we idolize THINGS!? We should be idolizing The Father the way we do these packages! It’s so hard to understand if you don’t have these issues as described in the video! I can’t wait for a part 2! This video is a true blessing!! ❤✝️
Deep serious decluttering when I moved 3 years ago lifted a huge burden on my heart. That lightness is what helps me not go crazy over buying Bibles. I went to a digital Bible which also helps me admire but not buy physical Bibles. The same with other stuff, especially cute scripture plaques and stickers and such. I think I’m getting my dopamine hits from enjoying the openness of my home.
Thank you so much for this Charlene ❤️ This video is so needed in the TH-cam and social media culture that teaches us we NEED… the latest piece of technology, the fanciest Bible, the trending devotional, etc. I have been in your shoes making excuses for myself when buying excessive amounts of devotionals, bibles, studies… thinking that since it’s for my spiritual walk with God it’s ok to buy in excess. I am challenging myself for 2025 not to buy anymore bibles, devotionals, and anything else that is not a necessity.
Guuuurrrrllll you done hit a nerve🫣😳👀🥹thank you. Disappointed in myself repentant and grateful to know I couldn’t understand why. Thank you Jesus I caught myself awhile back however I thought it was just me. May God continue to guide you keep you and heal you. Thank you
Char, I have to say that I have thought you and I had a lot in common all along but today's video hit the nail on the head. I have lost count on how many Bibles, studies, devotionals, etc I have and alot of it is because someone else has it. I have yet to find the perfect Bible but I also haven't opened alot of the Bibles I have so it's time so I can weed through them and bless someone else with a Bible. Thanks for being so open and honest because it helps me to know I am not alone
Thank you Charlene for being so vulnerable and real! I went through this for 4 years and realized what I am doing this year. So if it helps someone here is what I am doing now.. I just use one bible and set a time to study the bible in the morning. I use a reading plan but do not follow the date. I just take my time to read that passage may be it takes days. Then meditate on it. Then I take some time during the day for creative outlet. I do creative journaling and use stickers and different mediums. This way I give God the first and the best and then also do something to let my cr eative juices flow- hence calm down my dopamine.. hope this helps.. We all have flaws.. God understands! Lets keep him first in our lives🙏
Thank you for speaking on this. I’m glad more Christian content creators are speaking more on this. It’s a big deal. An idol can be anything even good things! In my opinion and enemy knows our weaknesses and beautiful bibles sell and get us off course. Also always seeking knowledge by buying more commentaries or study bibles is an idol too. It’s not about knowledge it’s about relationship with Jesus 😊 I hope more content creators wake up about this issue
You just described my last two years. I have adult adhd and autism. I constantly hyperfixate on things, and I've been stuck looking for my perfect bible, perfect bible study, watching videos. Your bravery and conviction and openness has truly helped me. The Lord has been trying to break this for a long time. I knew this was important for me to watch because I almost avoided clicking on it on purpose and that's how I know. When I catch myself or have that second thought or have the immediate impression to avoid things because I'm uncomfortable (in this context), that's typically how I know I need to do it/God has a convicting word for me. Thank you for helping me listen to our God and you have such a gentleness and compassion while you speak so lovingly to us. You brought me tears and in such a gracious way allowed me to empathize and relate to someone in a deeply similar way and God knows that's about the only way to reach me. I've even sought out Bibles that I don't initially like because one day I looked at it again and decided I wanted it, thats so hard to admit. (On another note. The Jesus Bible print thing, I cannot read t either and makes me sad! I would truly choose this one (grey artist one) for my primary reading bible, but my poor eyesight. I am not trying to take away from your actual point but
Yes! Girl I just taught/confessed in this same issue in my Bible study class. I’ve been going through the same thing! I honestly feel like this is a stealthy sneak attack of the enemy of our souls to bring distraction. We’re thinking about the Word but not really thinking about what it’s saying. I only wish we could have seen your beautiful face in this video cause this issue is so intense and intimate. ❤
You are not alone! Everything thing you described as far as the feelings of having something coming. I have so many Bibles and I don’t need to buy another one, but like you said it’s something about the rush you get when you know you have something coming in the mail. I also talked to my therapist about it. I too suffer from depression and anxiety as well as ADD. I told myself I will not buy another Bible in 2025 and I pray I will be able to do so. Thank You for this video. Very eye opening and needed 🙏🏽.
Definitely not the only one. I’ve had this problem since my mother passed away and I’ve been trying to find the “perfect” bible, instead of reading the Bible and filling my void with God
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I got caught up with Bible buying from influencers on YT during the pandemic. I accumulated so many Bibles in all price ranges and so on. I felt so convicted that I finally acknowledged that I had a problem. Finally, a month ago, I packed up all the Bibles that I had not used (or even opened) and took them to the nearest thrift store, along with commentaries and other related books. Roughly $1500 worth of unused Bibles and such. ADHD gal here. Your video is spot on. May God bless you, and thanks again for sharing this video!
I do agree that Bible collecting can turn into idol worship. It's sucks tho, because on TH-cam, there are so many good and cute videos about Bibles. It just makes you want to buy everything you see featured. Social Media is definitely a big influence on having a Bible addiction. I only have two Bibles, but the holiday sales are *calling* me to buy 10 more Bibles. I have plans for the Bibles, but have no time. So, the Bibles would be sitting in a box collecting dust. I don't know if it's greed or the great desire to constantly have something new appearing at your door step. I haven't even completed my current Bible project, yet I want a whole table full of new Bibles. I will not give in my cravings. Instead I'm going to focus on finishing my current project, and THEN buy a new Bible.
Yes this. Even when Bible reviewers say you don't have to buy what they are reviewing, well the whole point of reviewing is for the product to be sold/bought. I had to unsubscribe to a few channels to not be tempted.
@@NewSpiritWhosThis0707 Yes it is a big deal here on TH-cam. I have slowed down watching so many because I found myself more interested in what Bible they had rather than what they were teaching or studying. I purposely avoided sales. Also unsubscribed from websites. I have started over every single time I got another Bible and lost focus. I grew increasing weary. May God help us all smh
This was a message for me! Im the same way ive just bought 2 study bibles just last night and 1 study bible & 3 bibles weeks ago. I now have about 14 total bibles now since i started my journey 1 year ago. And honestly my 2 basic bibles got the most of my time of all. The study bibles, journal bibles, or study bibles havent gotten the love like the 2 i had first bought which were basic kjv and nkjv no bells or whistles. Even my kids have started to tell me i have a problem. I thougth i was a good thing because i quit smoking and drinking after coming to God.
I’ve been purchasing so many bibles in the last 3 months. I buy high lighters, prayer cards, note books, and I can’t stop myself. Where is my self control.
I went down the same path! Inspire, Jesus Bible in robins egg blue, best highlighters and pens, etc. always searching for the best Bible for me. I finally found “the one” ESV Journaling Study Bible. It’s filled with notes as I’ve studied God’s Word and have enjoyed it so much this year! The search stopped and I have been content. Then the ESV interleaved Bible went on a huge discounted price and… guess what? I’m done searching- I have plenty of Bibles to give away or donate. Fact is we all have more than enough compared with the rest of the world. If we have ONE Bible we are so blessed! I found the same thing- distraction and coveting. Now if I have that urge I donate to buy Bibles for believers in a people group that don’t have enough.
I am subscribed to World Watch News Now and they broadcasted that the sales in Bibles have risen even though studies have shown that more and more people have became secular. They said Amazon mentioned that many of their Bibles went toTH-cam channels and those that made a commission on them. We do really need to be aware and be careful. My favorite Bible is my NLT Compact Giant Print Bible (Rose Gold) it doesn’t have the bells and whistles like art or journaling but it’s easy to read, easy to carry, and has less distractions. I do really want the Thrive Devotional Bible though. I think it is nice since the daily reading is layed out for you. So, I’m struggling too.😢 Thank you for your video. I will send a prayer your way. 😊❤
ooooh when I tell you this video spoke to me. I just spent way too much money and time getting the "perfect Bible". And now that they are here I haven't even picked up any of them because "I don't have everything set up right yet to get into them the way I plan". Sigh. Lord help me to just pick up and read and spend time with you.
I appreciate your honest video I been holding back because I know all this bibles review are so beautiful I don’t have one but hopefully soon stay bless 🎀
Thank you so much for this video! I needed this sooooo much! I have been paralyzed in m spiritual walk due to this issue of the "perfect" Bible, which translation, note taking systems in the Bible, notes in a journal, color coding, etc. Overwhelming! After you explained th dopamine cycle, I think I have the same issue. You explained that so well. So, 2025 is a new year! I will not buy a new Bible for 2025 but go through the Bibles I do have and pick one to use for 2025 and discipline myself to use only that one Bible. Pick a journal and stick with it. I truly do want that "relationship" with God - not a relationship with a Bible. I want to read through His word and discover Who He is and Whose I am and belong to. Pray for me and others who are trying to do the same. We all need each other to hold us up in prayer resist the enemy and his schemes. Thank you and may God bless all who are trusting God to help them through their struggles.
This is me right now…….. I’ve ordered I wanna say 4 now and I can’t find the “perfect” one for me that keeps me in the word. It’s like an obsession I have and I’m never satisfied so I’m never diving into any Bible… I thought it was just me 😭 the lord definitely put this video on my suggested for a reason 😢
Great video. I’m guilty of this. There’s another channel called lovethatchangedme. She talks about the same issue. Between your video and her video God is convicting me. But I never saw it as coveting or idolatry until you mentioned it. Thank you for sharing this and for this video
What if you don’t feel any excitement when you purchase something new? I know that I’m filling an avoid. I do have a relationship with God. But I just feel so empty inside. I’m 61 years old. I also feel that I’m going through postmenopausal depression. I’ve never really been a person that buys Bible, quite the opposite, until I discovered creating a prayer Bible. Now I just think that Bible are so… beautiful. I recently purchased two from the friends of the public library. Purchased from their vintage section, and on the last day of their book sale everything was half price, so they were not more than $6 each. Thank you for taking about this 🙏
@@LovinDebsFit50s Thank you for expressing yourself here. I often remind myself that we should turn to God in all our moods. Even if we are uncertain about what or why we feeling a way. You may not get excited but the purchasing is still impulsive. Your brain has been signal to fix a problem and buying the Bible’s were computed to be a resolution. We will never fully understand all the changes our bodies go through. I know often times as we get older our hormones are off so we seek some sort of satisfaction or feel good feeling. I would start there. They make vitamins for hormone balance for women 50 +. I would also ask my doctor. If you are on a fixed income or can afford it a therapist would be my next step. Praying the whole way through and being honest with yourself is key.
@ Thank you for your reply and suggestions. 🤗 I have tried the supplements & it didn’t work for me due to Gerd. It just worsened the acid reflux, so I stopped taking them. I’m currently using Wild Yam Cream, which has helped with the constant bouts of (random) daily crying. Thru my husband’s health ins therapy it’s too expensive. I’m a person who prays often for others and myself. I also believe in gratitude and thanking God. I was diagnosed with tremors of the head, neck and arms in 2023 & an organ prolapse so always in pain. It might have something to do with my depression. 🤷♀️ I haven’t gone to see the recommended neurologist because that cost is over $1,200.
@ oh wow!!! May God be your strength. Our healthcare system should make an effort to make mental health solutions more affordable. Some church offer counseling/ therapy. The next step for me and my pain is the neurologist too smh. I had no idea how expensive they are.
@ Thank you! That’s the cost for the CT scan that my primary doctor recommended. I had to have a CT scan in 2018 (I believe it was) for a possible mass of my left lower lung. I’m not sure of the cost for the neurologist. I will keep you in my prayers. 🙏🙏🙏
@@Sirach144 when I started getting double of the same that’s when my eyes opened to the greediness I was suffering from. It was a problem I was and will continue to work on.
I've purchased various translations over the past few months for the purposes of teaching 'Word for Word' versus 'Thought for Thought'. I'm an in-depth teacher of the Word so for me, my bibles assist me in breaking down the Word of God. I think that we as consumers have started over-indulging in consumption of everything, not just bibles. Pray for discipline in ALL your purchases, not just the purchase of bibles.
I don’t know why I started wanting all the Bible’s. I had my tried and true old brown NIV Bible, and a life application study Bible that I have had for over a decade. I was even mocked when I would sit and read it on my lunch breaks at work… I learned so much. But this summer, I I thought I needed a “perfect” Bible. I got bought 4 over the summer, and I have 3 journal coloring ones coming tomorrow. Granted, two of those are for my daughters. I figured we could read, learn and color together.
Loved your video sweetheart ❤ May God bless you and keep you… I speak Spanish but you are a blessing to me because I am also a Christian… (I love the term “believer”)
Did you say ‘Anything that has been associated with Zacharius has been removed’? Could you go a bit deeper into this and why, if you have the time? This is something I’m definitely unaware of. Thank you so much. Also, thank you for being so transparent and vulnerable in sharing your story here. I can relate ALL too well. And about 7 years ago, my addiction in seeking and purchasing Bibles in search of the ‘perfect’ one was fed by the fact that my daughter worked at Ollie’s in the book department and would give me her 20% discount. 🙆🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
@@pammanners2250 Yes Zacharius contributed to some of the devotions and commentary in the Bible. He was discovered to have been inappropriate involved with women while married. A lot of the young women working for his spa companies fail I victim to his sexual crimes. So any ministry that was associated with him removed him from their sites, commentaries, etc. And I’m so sorry. Ollies had me too. Bibles were so cheap. And they often had the pretty ones.
I’ve often wondered why people bought a new Bible every year. It isn’t like it wears out. Maybe this is part of the reason. A thought :: If everyone who has a problem buying too many Bibles because they love getting new Bibles in the mail started a Bible-addict group and every week mailed Bibles to other members of the group, everyone would be getting new Bibles routinely without spending anything except postage. It still costs some money, but no one would be accumulating more Bibles because they would also be getting rid of extra Bibles. Maybe it would be an initial step in conquering this.
@@lkreinmiller-author this seems very ideal but something similar was going on in a group and a lot of people would keep the Bible for longer than they should or not return at all. But I would say when I was accumulating bibles from others to giveaway it did help me not desire to buy as much.
@ , very true. I was thinking from the spending angle. I ❤️❤️❤️ markers, pens, and journals. Even now, using a strictly digital Bible, I have to actually stop myself from buying them because I don’t even have the self-delusion I will use them. And don’t get me started on digital stickers. I went through a buying phase last spring. I now have more digital stickers than I will ever use, but I did stop buying. Best I can say is they don’t take up any space.
Thank you for sharing. I think I may have an addiction to book related items, especially if its Jane Austen related merchandise. I honestly don't know how it why. I guess because the books I buy are safe and not trashy I just don't know. I love to read but of course my Bible is more important. Anyway, I could use prayer in that area. Thank you sister.
@@wifeoftim you are most welcome! I did something similar. I sought out books from a certain publisher because I knew it was a clean read but ended up not reading them. I will have to go through my bookshelf soon and clear some things out. A lot of books were brought simply because they were Christian. I will pray for you and please pray for me.
I see the problem in my life and have made the decision for 2025 to pick one main bible and use different translations that I have to really study and meditate on scriptures I’ve also separated new bibles to gift them to my local church book bin❤❤❤ I really desire to be pleasing in the Fathers sight 😊

Love you for talking about this. It's a topic within Christianity that needs to be talked about more. Because it's a Bible it's given a pass.
@@openlybookish so true!!! Thank you for understanding 💜 and your encouragement
This is so timely! The Holy Spirit is certainly speaking through you to me! Praise Jesus & amen!
Love this challenge/goal for 2025. Count me in.
I’m challenging myself the same thing! I wanted to do it for 2024 too but 😅

So true!!
