  • Brian Eslick from How to Automotive www.howtoautomo... takes you step-by-step through the process of replacing your alternator on a 2009/2010 Honda Odyssey 3.5 L V6. Estimated repair time 1.5 hours. If you know the car inside and out, you can do it in that time. If it's your first time, it will take a little longer. Job was done with a mix of hand and power tools.

    Hi Brian,
    Great video! and well explained. I just replaced an alternator on my 06 Odyssey today also and I did find it to be a bit tougher than other alternator jobs I've done. However, I didn't remove the radiator bracket or the condenser bracket. I did remove the 4 bolts on the A/C compressor, hunged it and that was just enough for me to reposition the alternator and wiggle it out. I guess there are a few ways to fish the sucker out! Thanks again for sharing the video, very useful tips and helpful information.

    Thank you for posting this, I just replaced on my 2010 Odyssey which was not operational due to bad alternator. By far the most challenging project I have tried on any of my vehicles.......but I got it done and it can be done. Thanks for your tip on pulling back the radiator as I do not think I could have fished it out without doing that. I watched your video a few others over and over again as I got stuck several times along the way. Thanks again!

    For 2012 Odyssey pretty much the same except if you take the top bolts off the plastic grill and remove the passenger sign fan from the radiator and the top radiator hose (after draining just a little). Then you can pull back on the radiator and create an easy gap to remove the alternator and install the new one. Thanks for the video!

    Great video! Got the alt out of my 06 Odyssey through the top. I loosened the ac lines, power steering reservoir and dropped the washer fluid container. Also removed the alt bracket but marked the angle the alt was mounted so the tension was the same. I found out if you put tension on the belt tensioner using a breaker bar there was a spot to tuck the bar so you could lock it in the down position while you did what you have to do with the belt. Other issues where getting the alt to seat in the bottom mount, I ended up using a little grease and downward pressure finally got it. My only question about the job was the way the serp belt was riding a little close to the edge after it was all put together. I bought a multimeter and watched another vid that said if you hook it to the battery and the voltage drops the alt is no good but If it bumps up to 14 volts you now have a charge! Thanks agin feel good about accomplishing the task but wouldn't have tried without this vid!

    I just did this job today. All I had to do was drop the wiper fluid reservoir. There's one 10 mm bolt up top and two down low and once the reservoir was dropped down I was able to get the alternator out by relocating the power steering pump as far to the driver side as it'll go without disconnecting the lines. And the alternator came right out. Through the route where the wiper fluid reservoir resides.

    Great video. Took me 3 and a half hours from start to finish. A few things that helped me were to unbolt the washer fluid holder, and the power steering reservoir bracket Also used a 2X4 to wedge the radiator out of the way. Did not need to jack motor. Two major pains are getting the darn thing out, and plugging the plug back into the a/c compressor. Ugh!! Thanks for the vid Brian!

    Hey man. I'm a mechanic down in Canada had to do one of these today. I found if you unbolt the washer bottle. And p/s resivoir. The two ac line brackets you can dish it out through the top. To get it past the tensioner pull the tensioner back and it slides past the a/c line and basically slides right out of the top once you push a few hoses and wires to the side. Good video though got me on the right track and saved me a bunch of time.

    • @HowtoAutomotive
      @HowtoAutomotive  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tyler thanks for watching my video and writing to me. I did want to couple weeks earlier and I pretty much did it the way you described. And it came right out but this model seem to be a little different and it wouldn't come out that way. Also looking back I can see ways of doing it better to. thanks again for watching I'm glad I can help out.

    • @njfocus1
      @njfocus1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for posting this feedback. Removing the washer bottle was the trick for helping me free the failed alternator from my 2007 Odyssey, today -- brilliant! The new one slipped in from the top via the same opening created by moving the washer bottle fill neck along with the p/s resevoir and bracket out of the way. I was able to rotate the new alternator back into position without moving the tensioner back. There are 3 bolts that hold the washer bottle in place. One is visible from the top near the filler cap. The other two are easily accessible from underneath by prying the fender liner back in a couple of places (no need to remove the entire fender liner). I used the 06-08 Honda Pilot Tech Manual for the washer bottle removal instructions. I disconnected the 2P electrical connector from the washer motor. I left the washer tubes in place as they had sufficient slack to move the bottle fill neck out of the way (creating space for the alternator) after the bolts were removed.

    Thanks for the video. Helped a lot on our 2010 exl. I also could access the tensioner from the top which saved a couple min. This video was very helpful, I just wish that someone else could have video taped you in action. I would also like to add that I found it easier to remove the alternator by removing the plastic coolant tank and leaning the radiator back. This also allowed for the new alternator to slip right in and we could mount it and connect it.

    add me to the list!
    I got to work on this myself today! worst part about mine, is that I was with the entire family going on a family trip, this happened approx. 1 hour away from home! so now I got to make a few trips to get my tools and do it! the only good thing about the whole situation is that, I was able to pull in to a church and the pastor was nice enough to let me park there and do what I need to do to my car without any worries. I am glad that I am gonna have that Spiritual support and courage since I will be doing the work in a church parking lot!
    By the way I guess I cant get upset in the parking lot, since its a church! God is watching me! lol.....

    This video almost convinced me NOT to replace the alternator. After my wife said "it's just an alternator" that was it, I had to do it.
    The good news is I replaced it all from above!
    Pry bar on the idler pulley to release tension, remove belt from alternator.
    Long extension for main alternator wire.
    moved PS and rad overflow can,
    Lower alt bolt out with combo wrench,
    upper bolt and bracket out,
    do the rubics cube shuffle to get the alternator out!
    Reverse to install.
    I don't know why Honda didn't put a flat or pry hole on the inside of the tensioner bracket, it would have made it much simpler.

    My alternator went out on my 2012 Odyssey in 2015. I was able to replace it without removing any other components but it was EXTREMELY difficult. I had to manipulate it in all sort of directions just to get it down in the hole. I then had to use a string to hold it and have my wife's small arm reach down in to get a bolt started. Honestly, I think there was some luck involved. In any case, there was no way to hold the alternator, reach down and start the bolts myself. Just not enough room. But....it is possible with help if they have small arms. Also, I replaced it with a rebuilt Alt from Oreilly Auto. It seems to have issues now so I get to do this nightmare job again.....JOY!

I now have a much bigger problem, the upper mounting bolt broke off in the engine. I don't even know how, I was not using that much force, and it didn't even feel tight. Now I'm really stuck.

      Hi George I would price shop both dealer and AutoZone and if the dealer part is comparable to AutoZone price I would go with factory Parts. The good news is I think the 06 is a little easier. Remove the power steering reservoir and unbolt the bracket on the AC line and it will come out over there on the side. But don't hold me to it I'm just speaking from memory. Sorry I do not have part numbers for it. Thank you for taking your time to write to me.
