No shop open for miles. Your video showed me what’s up. I cannot ever thank you enough. With some loaner tools we were back on the road in just a few hours. I can never thank you enough my friend.
@@atrowell We had a bag of regular tools, bought a 3/8” metric socket set at the store and put a $100 deposit on the pry-bar kit to get the serpentine belt off… they also had a random collection of stuff in a tool box they let me use. The manager came out a couple times to check on us, they were so nice there.
Great video! I can't emphasize this enough - if your alternator is oily and black you will also need to repair the oil leak on the oil control valve assembly, an expensive repair if you take it into the shop, but less than $20 DIY. I ignored the oil leak, it leaked all over my new alternator, and now I am replacing it again.
@@tinaquintanilla3717 Yup, happens on the 06 as well. Have one myself and have been reading articles in order to replace the alternator. Lots of them mention an oil leak that may be leaking onto the alternator and causing the malfunction. But even if it's leaking and not causing the malfunction, you should still take care of the leak because it just might leak onto the new alternator.
@@tinaquintanilla3717 Because the date range falls in the window of the Ody's I read about (05-10) I would assume that it does. You may not see an oil leak on your garage floor, but there is likely to be a subtle leak somewhere. It was right near the alternator, and probably why I replaced it twice instead of just once.
"EASY" is definitely subjective. To me that is pretty difficult. On my daughter's Jeep it is about as hard as changing a tire. Great job making it look easy.
Thanks for this concise efficient video. I was able to do it in 1:30 and I’m definitely no mechanic. The hardest part for me was getting the old one out and the new one in. Thanks for giving me the confidence to attempt this repair.
Great video. And yes, the hardest part is getting the alternator out of the space. I followed the example in the video of taking the power steering reservoir out, as well as the bracket. I also lowered the washer fluid canister, but did not fully remove it. I left the washer fluid motor and hoses attached to the canister, and just rested it on a bucket to eliminate tension. Removing the tire is recommended. Nicely done, and thank you for documenting so clearly by including the respective socket size.

Regarding this effort - what a pain it is to get that sucker out and disconnect the bottom/underside lead. Silly me - I remember being able to change an alternator out on my Chevelle in the parking lot of the parts store so that I could take the core back in....took 5 mins with a ratchet set and didn't even get dirty. Not the case for a change out on a 2010 Odyssey :).
Very helpful video. I just purchased this 06 Odyssey for my family 4 days ago and the alternator went out. With your video I was able to get her back running by the night. I will say, I did struggle with placing the new alternater in due to the washer in the bracket for the lower 14mm bolt. Just a watch out for people.
Wish you made this video 1.5 years ago! My 09’ alternator went out. Loss of power steering, engine stalling, dash lights lit up like a Xmas tree! My first time replacing an alternator, took a long time, most difficult part was figuring out what to remove to get it out. Very tight compartment. At the end, I was happy I did it without taking it to a mechanic. My back wasn’t so happy. Spent hours hovered over good of engine. Picked mine up Advanced auto, pretty sure it was OEM remanufactured, but it wasn’t advertised as such. Reviews for compatible alternators at Pep Boys or Advanced were not good. Last thing I want to do is do it 2x! Thanks for the great video!
This video is excellent, thank you for putting this together and sharing. I was able to get this job done in about 3 hours thanks to this vid. I took out everything, even jacked up the engine a little bit, and that alternator was still a stubborn SOB getting out and especially putting the new one back in. With that said, your video gave me confidence that it could be done without disconnecting the AC lines.
Done it but don’t expect it to be easy! You gonna have hard time removing the alternator especially without removing the power steering reservoir(but you can do it without removing it) and the washer fluid reservoir,don’t get scared with the belt tensioner.Helpful video!
Sir i changed the alt. with a reman. denso today, not easy! Buttoned everything up and hooked POS. Battery post. When connecting Neg. Battery post little sparks appear. What did I do wrong?

Thanks for the straightforward video! I just recently replaced my engine mounts and was able to pull the alternator out the same way you described removing the front engine mount (by removing the radiator fans, hood latch, etc). Pretty easy to do from the top of the engine bay. Thanks again!
Worked, had to do it twice. The alternator from the store was faulty. Extra time to remove the windshield wiper fluid tank but made it so much easier. Saves a lot of frustration
OMGoodness...thanks for the video. My 2006 had a different type of belt tensioner that used a 14mm socket applied to the center bolt of the top pulley which was the main difference. I found that if I deflected the a/c line a 1/2 inch the alternator came right out keeping it oriented exactly as its usually mounted. Thx again
Thanks for the optional tip about removing the washer fluid tank. It was the only way I could get enough clearance. My motor connection was really stuck on it and I couldn't get it off. Thankfully, there was enough play in the supply tubes and the electrical line to the motor that I was able to lower it and support it on a bucket. Doing so was basically the same as completely removing it. Thanks.
Very good instructions; straight to the point. Had a small problem getting my arm down to remove the A/C connector. Gingerly used a screw driver tip to unclip then a curved tip surgical clamp to pull off and to reinstall. Many thanks for taking the time to produce and post!
Just finished replacing on my 09 using this video. This is an excellent video, thank you! Hardest parts were disconnecting and reconnecting the AC clip (I have large arms, hard to get in there) and getting the old alternator out. I did not remove the windshield fluid reservoir, and had to force it out of the way. Luckily it didn't snap, but I was def nervous. It is possible though without removing.
As all the commenters have noted. Very straight-forward. Funny enough, the hardest part for me was reconnecting the a/c compressor connector one-handed. lol
Just Replaced mine on my 2007. This vid was awesome. I Had to bend my ac line a bit to get it out. My engine was a VCM motor if that makes a difference.
Good video. Works well. Can confirm washer fluid tank doesn't need removed in an 06 and would recommend leaving alternator bracket loose until ready to tighten everything.
Great video! I love how quiet and efficient it is. SO far I'm halfway through the job--got the old alternator out. You make each step look remarkably easy...but I got stuck at "simple" steps like pulling the tire well plastic shield out of the way to get at the windshield fluid tank bolts--just getting those #@#% plastic push bolts out without the proper tools is a pain! Getting the electric connector off the fluid tank pump. Figuring out how to squeeze the A/C plug on the side of the alternator to pull it off. Very hard reaching down into the front of the engine to squeeze and pull off that lower electrical connection, and then to get that little cable clip off (mine snapped off). Then getting the alternator out--you did it in like 10 seconds... I wrestled with mine for five minutes. The power steering reservoir hoses were the real pain--it looks like you got your reservoir completely out of the way somehow. Oh well--still a great video. Too bad the reality for each of us is not so clean and quick! :-) 3/7/2021 Edit: I found it much easier reinstalling the new alternator after putting a rubber plug (from Dorman black rubber vacuum cap assortment) on the lower power steering reservoir hose, and stopping up that hose with a sparkplug, so I could rotate the power steering reservoir out of the way more easily. I slightly relieved the tension on the low pressure connector to the power steering pump so I could rotate the hose to get the reservoir out of the way. 3/7/2021 Edit 2: All done! 14.15 volts on the battery! :-) The only thing I'd add to your video is the mention of the split ring bushing (?) where the lower 14mm bolt secures the alternator to the engine body. It's likely protruding slightly into the bracket space where the new alternator is supposed to slip in. I had a flat metal bar that I placed against the inside of this bushing and then tapped it over and over until the bushing was flush--so afterwards, sliding in the new alternator was a breeze. This, and my suggestion above about the power steering reservoir, are offered as icing on the cake you baked. :-) Thanks again.

IF YOU HAVE THE REGULAR EX MODEL ODYSSEY THE TENSIONER IS INTEGRATED INTO THE PULLEY TO THE LEFT AND SLIGHTLY ABOVE THE ALTERNATOR'S PULLEY It is not the 19MM external one. You use a 14MM directly on the center nut of that specific pulley, Push it slowly in the same direction as shown in the video I Was trying to figure this out for hours. NOBODY ON TH-cam SAID ANYTHING ABOUT IT. FUCK
Lucky you. About 3-4hr for me on my 2010 Odyssey. Couldn't remove the A/C wire until I removed the alternator. Had a tough time aligning the 14mm bolt to the alternator. Then couldn't connect the AC plug, so had to remove it again. I will say, props to the OP for the video. Helped a bunch!
I recommend removing the windshield washer fluid reservoir completely. it might be possible to wiggle the alternator out only removing the top bolt, but it is definitely much easier with it removed.
Thanks for the video. I just finished replacing mine. First time I did it and so this video helped tremendously! I decided not to remove the windshield fluid reservoir and so it was quite a challenge to wiggle the old out and the new in.
Thank You for the excellent video on how to do this repair. Well done, the video was helpful and informative. Just completed it on my 05 Odyssey. Getting the alternator out and back in was a PITA for sure, but installing was quicker than removal. Moving the bushing out prior to reinstalling was very helpful. Only issue I had was the removal of the washer motor; when removing one of the lines the nipple broke, most likely due to age of the part and the cold weather I was doing the repair in. Than you again for your help.
My 08's went out last year on the way up to ski at Snowshoe. Had dimming headlights and funky dashboard symptoms. Made it but had no tools and the closest auto parts was an hour away. Ended up paying a local to go get the part then had a ski maintenance guy replace it for me after his shift (with tips I got off of youtube). I got lucky.

Thanks for this! I’m going to attempt this in my 08 Ody, however I’m also doing the the power steering pump. Do you have any tips? Does having the power steering pump and pulley fully disconnected and out, have any benefit to removing the alternator? Will it create more room or is it really kinda out of the way a bit too much to have an effect? And should I disconnect/remove the pump>remove alternator>replace alternator>replace pump i.e. working from top down then back up? Thanks!
Did you consider taking the original part to an alternator shop? I know some people can't live without their car for a day or two but I hear some shops use good quality components to rebuild them and it costs a lot less than new OEM.
Most of your work i don't do myself but I love watching your videos because it gives me an idea what and how it should be done so I don't get beat by some of these unscrupulous mechanics. Is there significance to that 12mm bolt at 0:50 ? Does it connect anything or just hold it in place? I dropped the bolt and cant find it. The alternator isnt charging the battery now and i didnt know if it was the alternator connector or possibly that 12mm area

@@MrRangerZr1 really? The fans are just held in place by 4 bolts and like 3 electrical connections, it slides right out from the top, not sure why you would drain coolant or even touch the radiator at all.
Another great video. Doing the starter on a 2009 odyssey vcm there is no good videos for that I can find. Followed ETCG than had to figure out the different starter that's on the 2008 to 2010 odyssey. HINT HINT)

IF YOU HAVE THE REGULAR EX MODEL ODYSSEY
THE TENSIONER IS INTEGRATED INTO THE PULLEY TO THE LEFT AND SLIGHTLY ABOVE THE ALTERNATOR'S PULLEY
It is not the 19MM external one. You use a 14MM directly on the center nut of that specific pulley, Push it slowly in the same direction as shown in the video

Paul Toledo VCM motors must need the valve adjustment done around 100k-150k miles.
Non vcm motors don’t really need adjustment.
Any tips on removing the a/c compressor? The video doesn't show how it's done and it's in a very tricky and tight spot. Thanks!

Lucky you. About 3-4hr for me on my 2010 Odyssey. Couldn't remove the A/C wire until I removed the alternator. Had a tough time aligning the 14mm bolt to the alternator. Then couldn't connect the AC plug, so had to remove it again.

I recommend removing the windshield washer fluid reservoir completely. it might be possible to wiggle the alternator out only removing the top bolt, but it is definitely much easier with it removed.

Thanks for the video. I just finished replacing mine. First time I did it and so this video helped tremendously! I decided not to remove the windshield fluid reservoir and so it was quite a challenge to wiggle the old out and the new in.
i had to pry on the solid part of the ac line to get mine out

Thank You for the excellent video on how to do this repair. Well done, the video was helpful and informative. Just completed it on my 05 Odyssey. Getting the alternator out and back in was a PITA for sure, but installing was quicker than removal. Moving the bushing out prior to reinstalling was very helpful. Only issue I had was the removal of the washer motor; when removing one of the lines the nipple broke, most likely due to age of the part and the cold weather I was doing the repair in. Than you again for your help.
Yes those get fragile after a while. Mine also broke.

My 08's went out last year on the way up to ski at Snowshoe. Had dimming headlights and funky dashboard symptoms. Made it but had no tools and the closest auto parts was an hour away. Ended up paying a local to go get the part then had a ski maintenance guy replace it for me after his shift (with tips I got off of youtube). I got lucky.

Question: Bolt that attaches the (alternator) bracket to the alternator: what's the torque?
It's 16 FtLb in case anybody needs it (same as the torque needed to attach the bracket to the engine block)

Great video! Well done. I however on my 2007 odyssey was not able to remove the alternator unless i also removed the belt tensioner in addition to all the stuff you removed.
Yes on those motor the belt tensioner is chunky and can get in the way

Thanks for this! I’m going to attempt this in my 08 Ody, however I’m also doing the the power steering pump. Do you have any tips? Does having the power steering pump and pulley fully disconnected and out, have any benefit to removing the alternator? Will it create more room or is it really kinda out of the way a bit too much to have an effect? And should I disconnect/remove the pump>remove alternator>replace alternator>replace pump i.e. working from top down then back up? Thanks!
Doesn't really matter, I would remove the PS pump first, then alternator, then install alternator then PS pump.

Question for you, were you ever able to find an affordabe remote start for this vehicle?
Never got to install one, nothing beats OEM systems.
Did you consider taking the original part to an alternator shop? I know some people can't live without their car for a day or two but I hear some shops use good quality components to rebuild them and it costs a lot less than new OEM.
If you have a good local shop you can do that. Personally, I would just swap it out with a denso unit and call it done.
Most of your work i don't do myself but I love watching your videos because it gives me an idea what and how it should be done so I don't get beat by some of these unscrupulous mechanics. Sir i changed the alt. with a reman. denso today, not easy! Buttoned everything up and hooked POS. Battery post. When connecting Neg. Battery post little sparks appear. What did I do wrong?

Is there significance to that 12mm bolt at 0:50 ? Does it connect anything or just hold it in place? I dropped the bolt and cant find it. The alternator isnt charging the battery now and i didnt know if it was the alternator connector or possibly that 12mm area

Just curious, why did you choose to remove the washer fluid reservoir instead of the cooling fans ?
Much easier and faster to remove the windshield jug. Removing the fans takes longer, have to drain radiator, disconnect the top hose, etc.
@@MrRangerZr1 really? The fans are just held in place by 4 bolts and like 3 electrical connections, it slides right out from the top, not sure why you would drain coolant or even touch the radiator at all.

Use different socket/extensions or just move the tensioner out of the way
Is it normal to have some oil residue underneath the alternator? There’s not really any on top-just some underneath.
No should be bone dry. Check your valve cover gasket and vtec solenoid if you have that. Video is on my channel. Common problem on the 08-17 models

And I noticed oil leaking in the area just below the dipstick. It builds up there sometimes. Thoughts? Would that be the vtec gaskets? Something else?
Not sure if you'll still comment on this, but my wife just bought one and alternator went out. Watched your video and someone sheered off the dummy bolt. Drilled it out, but not sure where to go from here?
