Hi Darshan .. I am from meghalaya . I have just stumbled on your vlogs a couple of days back and I love your videos . Would like to point out a couple of things you got wrong there . The Khasiya Badam is chestnut The white fruit you had we call it ‘Sohphlang’ here . Its like a root based fruit . It grows underground and its very nutritious . We khasis love it and usually have it with salt, powder chilly and white sesame The black chutney you had for lunch is called ‘Tungrymbai’ its almost same as axone which Naga people eat except the preparation is different. Its made of fermented beans and cooked with pork, chilly and black sesame paste
The black chutney is called Tungrungbai made of fermented beans, black sesame seeds, ginger garlic turmeric chillies.. Have you tasted fried smoked pork? You should visit You and I cafe in Mawlai Mawroh
There is Glory’s Plaza at police bazar. Lots of Tibetan shops and nice Tibetan restaurant called Tibet kitchen.. you must visit there .. I’m sure you gonna love it ..
@@DCTravelerExperience you should go to snow lion restaurant in police Bazar and there's one more Tibetan restaurant in Tibetan mini market in police Bazar, the name which I can't recall.
I watched half of it in my phone since vlog already came out. But I will watch it in TV tomorrow. It was nice and they really have way different foods and culture even though it is in India. Wow! Keep blogging. Thank you and good luck always🙏👍
Hi Darshan, the green chutney that you tasted is made of fermented soybeans and black sesame and the red chutney that you liked actually has dry fish in it. It's called tungtap. I hope you enjoyed the khasi snacks you bought in the morning. Would love to see a vlog on that too:)
Oh thanks for that clarification! I liked the red one and thought green one smelled of fish and didn’t like it for that reason. Apparently I liked the one with dry fish. Hmm! 🤷🏻♂️
It takes a courage to taste something which you have never tried or seen before specially when it is in raw state ... Anyway, hopefully you are doing good after eating those things which you have bought ...Be blessed and stay safe my friend
The best tungrymbai is not available on shops, but the best tungrymbai is that which people cook at home. This is the truth. I've never like pre-cooked tungrymbai, but the one which was cook by my mother or in some instances me, taste way better. Can't have enough of it.
3:08 funny when you said it, "I don't even know what that is"😂. LOL. That is actually a local made scrubber/brush, it is used for scrubbing clothes while doing laundry by our Shillong mothers or to scrub the house floor. We cannot find anywhere else except in Shillong. 26:19 The best taste you can get from Dohkhleh is when you mix it with 'brain' of a beef or a pork😋. You could have seen it when you went in the alley where you saw some kong selling intestines and some meat which looked like a face towel😁.
Hey Darshan, This is gonna be a long comment. But, I hope it'll help you in understanding our culture and food, of what little I know of. Really cool and adventurous for you to go to the Meat section. Yes, the smell of raw meat and blood, especially of red meat (any animal) is not for everyone. You I understand are from Gujarat, as strict NO non veg place (I know you do get it there, I have been there for 2.5 yrs), these kind of places are 1000% more difficult to comprehend and, lets call it, to your palete. Also dry fish is something which stinks a lot but is love for people like me. :p That place is heaven for extreme meat lovers like us. LOL! Coming on to the things you tried, - Khasiya Badam is Hazelnut, nutty and sweet when ripe. Unlike the hazelnut that you get on other parts of the country/supermarket. These are tiny and yummy. - The second friut you tried (the white one) is most probably Water Chestnut or Singhara as called in Hindi. We have it raw in the northeast. It was a surprise for me when I bought is for the first time in UP and it was cooked. Again I not being used to that taste, it not up to my palete. I like the raw better. - The chutney you tried with the lunch which you described as dried fish is actually "Tungrymbai" which is a fermented soya beans chutney. The fermented soya bean again has a very strong smell as dry fish, very stinky and yet very very tasty. It's an acquired taste, it tastes a little cheese kind of, leaving a slight lingering after taste. Fermented soya bean is also famous called Axone/Akhuni in Naga. As for you acquiring the taste of the food. You'll find it difficult to like all kind of TRIBAL food of all the NE states. They are all very bland, cooked with only herbs and very less/ no use of masala. But, once you have acquired the taste, you'll want to have it again and again. In the Assamese (non-tribal) cuisine also, very little to no masala is used. Another predominant ingredient we use is Bamboo Shoot. All the cuisines of the NE uses it. Not sure about Sikkim. Finally, coming to fish. You should start with fresh water fishes which has none to very little stink, with a few exceptions and not salt water fishes whi. Also try out the ones with less bones like the cat fish varieties Singhgara. You could also try Rohu and Catla/Bhokua fish, it has some bone but a little sweet flesh. Take a Assamese friend along with to try it. There are some Assamese and Naga restaurants in B'lore you should try out. You are doing a great job man. Exploring the real world and not just the trouristy things. Keep it up.
This is the most useful comment, thank you! Yes, nicely said, exactly my thoughts, that Khasi cuisine is an acquired taste and I am in the process right now! And I suspect, as you said, all NE tribal food is going to be like this. Some of the items I liked right off the bat, but being from vegetarian background and past, I am still a wannabe hardcore carnivore--if that makes sense 😀 And Thanks for the tip about which fish to start with. I appreciate all your comments! Cheers bro!
@@DCTravelerExperience Keep on visiting NE you'll become a Hard Core carnivore. In Nagaland and Arunachal (Tribal part in the central and eastern) you'll get to eat everthing that walks, flies or crawls. LOL!! However, you'll also be surprised by the no of varieties of vegetables and fruits you can find in the region, some are indigenous to our part of the country only. In Assam, we enjoy PORK a lot with rice beer :p . But fresh water Fish is the main stay. Then, there are many tribal food in Assam like snails, ants, larva etc. among many. Saying that, we also consume a large varities of saags (Xhak in Assamese) which you don't find anywhere in the country (trust me I've NOT been to only about 9 odd states in the country).
