Cork handles are way more sensitive than foam. There's a reason high end rods have cork not foam. 😊 Nice rod for the price. Daiwa makes very nice rods.
Cork grip every time for me. Comfortable to hold, easy to clean when it gets dirty, long-lasting, so much nicer feel than any foam grip I have come across. Another enjoyable video; thank you.
Thanks for the video Ethan. I have always had cork on my spinning rods which I like but I picked up a baitcaster this spring and it has a foam grip and I like that as well. The foam has stayed nice even after many pike only slime fests. I do like the look of cork more than the foam.
I have a cheap shakespeare rod, from early 90's that has a foam handle. I have used and abused that pole and the foam has held up from spending tons of time in the fla sun...to left in my garage in tx. And all its done is feels smooth. Not sticky feeling..no spilts, rips...cracks, nothing. So you should be good to go with that rod being it has a foam handle. I prefer a cork handle...makes it look nicer.
If had the choice, I'd take a cork grip any day. However, I'm not opposed to foam grips. I have actually been curious about this rod in the casting form for a BFS reel I have that is currently rodless. Thanks for this video, Ethan! It really helped a lot!
I own 2. Both Med-Fast. A spinner and a caster. Went with an Aird X for my ultra light. Rounding out my collection is the new CDN Custom. Daiwa makes great value quality rods and reels.
That's a nice rod man . I like that man . I also like your teva sandals too . I use to have a pair of them until my foot outgrow them . I can work with either one of the grips . Thanks you for sharing this video buddy .
Yeah, I need the ultralight. Also, I have the medium and medium light and they are fantastic! I landed a bull redfish earlier this year on the medium with 10 pound test fish had to be somewhere around 20 pounds took forever to get it in, but the ride worked nicely
That spinning rod and reel combo is nicely well put together and amazing too. If you have a canal in your area, then try fishing in that for crappies. I have fished a lot of canals over the years as a young kid/teenager and always had great luck with crappies. One thing I don't like fishing in the canals are the facts that there is too much pickerel.
Back in the day..the top fit in the bottom on a two piece rod. I still have a two piece rod from the very early 90's a ultralight. That's the way they used to be. To me...its makes more sense to have the smaller part of the rod go into the bigger part.
As for your question of the day. I prefer cork. But if it is a quality foam, I can live with them. Glad they brought this rod out. I just need to save up the $100 for it.
I personally prefer cork over foam, but I like the plastic (or whatever material is is...?) ergonomic grip on my Olympic Bellezza UX SUL the best of all. I like the Lew's lite series handle as well.
Majority of mine are cork! Do like the style of the handle on that Tatula! Family pumpkin 🎃 carving days are fun! Only a few more days till Reese’s pumpkins!!!!
Cork grip for sure. Makes me want to go fishing, but 25 mph winds, gusting 35, with an unbearable amount of dirt in the air here in South Central Kansas. Air quality is 151.
Great video and information have some two piece rods both ways and so far i have know probably with them i am going to look in to get one thank you for the rod review
@@FishAnything Some people hate the limited lifetime warranty and some people love it. For the Sierra Trout and Panfish series it costs $60 + shipping + tax. Probably a little under what you paid for the Tatula XT. The dealer replacement is better IMO, because you only pay the warranty fee, and if they carry the same line of rods you can literally walk out the store with a new one. I did this with the SUF BFS rod when I broke the stinger tip on it. I took into my local tackle shop, where I bought it, paid the $60 and walked out with the exact same model. I did have to show proof of purchase. I think Sportsmans Warehouse is the biggest retailer for Dobyns who has brick and mortar stores and carries the Sierra Trout and Panfish rods. That's where I got mine at.
I am actively looking for equipment to spend some money on at the moment so this is great for me. Work pays for half of anything lifestyle related up to a certain amount and I haven't submitted anything yet for the year...*adds to cart*
I'm a cork guy, i don't like foam because if you don't take care of the foam it can mold up due to the fish juice and slim soak into the foam; smell bad too
I prefer cork. It has a more quality feel. Have you ever tested and used an Okuma Celilo? I have one in ultralight weight 6 foot six and it is a terrific rod It is really close to the quality level of a St. Croix that cost 4 to 5 times as much.
Got this rod after watching your vid. Thanks! But man its 100 bucks in the US but in Malaysia its roughly $50 (after discounts) with shipping included. (I live in Malaysia btw if that isnt obvious enough)
Okay so I'm in my early 40's and I remember every two piece I had and everyone used had top section going into bottom. And that's domestic rods I still have quite a few just laying around, I don't know why they changed it probably happened around the late 90's. I feel as if the old way was far superior and do not care for the top end going over the bottom. Also prefer cork over foam all day.
I've gotten the itch for a new UL rod. I love my 5'6" Defy Silver, but I'm hoping to find something that can get a little more distance on 1/64oz jigs. Thought I was set on the TFO Trout & Panfish and was waffling on 6' vs 6'.6" Until I watched this video the other day. Now, I've been waffling even more! 😂 I really prefer cork grips and the "all around" abilities of the TFO, but this rod sounds like a riot. Any insight into casting 1/64oz jigs on this Tatula vs the 6'/6'6" TFO? Thanks, Ethan!
The 6' TFO would probably do a bit better than this rod, but both will do fine as long as you go low on line diameter. This rod may just feel a little funny with the micro stuff on a cast - the design favors a vertical presentation a bit more.
Foam grips 100%. Did you catch that carp on a mule jig? I think I had a carp on a Texas rig 6" soft plastic worm once but he broke off. I'd love to know if carp go for soft plastics sometimes. Nothing else fights like a carp!
carp will randomly hit lures, but they can be caught way easier with a piece of bread cast above them( if you can sight fish them) or using corn on a "hair rig".
Yeah he ate a Donkey Tail Jr but like Meta said, there are definitely more effective ways of targeting Carp. I have never got into it, but I always enjoy when I randomly get one to slurp up a Mule Jig
I think I would, yes. The Dobyns is a bit better balance and makes for a better all-around rod. Not currently pleased with their ownership though - I never heard from them after breaking the rod and reaching out.
I wont by a foam grip rod it HAS to be cork for me to even consider it, its the way it feels in the hand and honestly just the way it looks. Also not a big fan of that split grip style of rod i like the full cork on the butt end of the rod, i might just be old school tho
Cork all the way. Especially because it gets really hot here and petroleum based materials will outgas all of their volatile compounds and start to deteriorate. Cork lasts. My hands keep it oiled.
What is it with Americans and casting with your right hand just to switch hands to reel in?? Just move the handle to the left side of the reel and keep the rod in your right hand 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️
I love ultralight. Caught a 13lb. large mouth bass on ultra light on 4lb test trilene.
That had to be crazy!!
Love the fun of ultra light fishing, Can't get enough of the fight of the fish on ul gear!!! Great video man!!!
Thanks man!
What a crispy looking combo!
It really does look beautiful
Cork handles are way more sensitive than foam. There's a reason high end rods have cork not foam. 😊
Nice rod for the price. Daiwa makes very nice rods.
I definitely prefer cork grips but I will fish just about anything lol
@FishAnything 👍
YES! Was waiting on this one!
It is a unique rod! 🤠
Cork grip every time for me. Comfortable to hold, easy to clean when it gets dirty, long-lasting, so much nicer feel than any foam grip I have come across. Another enjoyable video; thank you.
Thank you Stephen - totally agree!
Thanks for the video Ethan. I have always had cork on my spinning rods which I like but I picked up a baitcaster this spring and it has a foam grip and I like that as well. The foam has stayed nice even after many pike only slime fests. I do like the look of cork more than the foam.
Yeah I definitely prefer cork but I have owned several rods with both types
I have a cheap shakespeare rod, from early 90's that has a foam handle. I have used and abused that pole and the foam has held up from spending tons of time in the fla sun...to left in my garage in tx. And all its done is feels smooth. Not sticky feeling..no spilts, rips...cracks, nothing. So you should be good to go with that rod being it has a foam handle. I prefer a cork handle...makes it look nicer.
That’s impressive!!
If had the choice, I'd take a cork grip any day. However, I'm not opposed to foam grips. I have actually been curious about this rod in the casting form for a BFS reel I have that is currently rodless. Thanks for this video, Ethan! It really helped a lot!
Sounds like we have the same preference!
Just picked up the 6’8 light, since it’s rated down to 1/32nd. Super excited to finally have something JDM.
Heck yeah! That should be a super cool rod.
I own 2. Both Med-Fast. A spinner and a caster. Went with an Aird X for my ultra light. Rounding out my collection is the new CDN Custom. Daiwa makes great value quality rods and reels.
Daiwa just gets better every year. I think they are my company to beat with regards to rods and reels
That's a nice rod man . I like that man . I also like your teva sandals too . I use to have a pair of them until my foot outgrow them . I can work with either one of the grips . Thanks you for sharing this video buddy .
Thanks Mack!
That rod is actually so sick!!!
It truly is a neat rod. Great vertical jigging setup
I've been using the Medium and Medium/light this season for bass. It's an awesome rod. Now I need a light or Ultralight.
Yeah, I need the ultralight. Also, I have the medium and medium light and they are fantastic! I landed a bull redfish earlier this year on the medium with 10 pound test fish had to be somewhere around 20 pounds took forever to get it in, but the ride worked nicely
Daiwa makes great equipment across the board!

I have fished a lot of canals over the years as a young kid/teenager and always had great luck with crappies. One thing I don't like fishing in the canals are the facts that there is too much pickerel.
I don't really have too many canals in my area - thanks Shawn!
@FishAnything
For sure you are very welcome
Carp slayer! Respect landing it. Also I like cork, but also have a number of foam grips.
It was a tough fight but we made it happen!
Back in the day..the top fit in the bottom on a two piece rod. I still have a two piece rod from the very early 90's a ultralight. That's the way they used to be. To me...its makes more sense to have the smaller part of the rod go into the bigger part.
Yeah it seems to make more sense in my head too
As for your question of the day. I prefer cork. But if it is a quality foam, I can live with them. Glad they brought this rod out. I just need to save up the $100 for it.
Yeah I agree. Foam is fine, but cork is definitely the preference.
I personally prefer cork over foam, but I like the plastic (or whatever material is is...?) ergonomic grip on my Olympic Bellezza UX SUL the best of all. I like the Lew's lite series handle as well.
The fancy plastic stuff can be decent but I think I will always prefer good ol' cork
Majority of mine are cork! Do like the style of the handle on that Tatula! Family pumpkin 🎃 carving days are fun! Only a few more days till Reese’s pumpkins!!!!
Yeah the handle style is very good for the vertical jigging technique. Not quite as comfortable for traditional cast and wind, but not bad either.
Cork grip for sure. Makes me want to go fishing, but 25 mph winds, gusting 35, with an unbearable amount of dirt in the air here in South Central Kansas. Air quality is 151.
It’s tough when the wind is crazy like that. Hang in there!
Awesome bro!!🐟💯
Thanks Domingo
I think cork but it’s a tough call!
Great video and information have some two piece rods both ways and so far i have know probably with them i am going to look in to get one thank you for the rod review
Thanks Ray!
I'm with you with the top piece sliding into the bottom piece... not normal. 🤷♂️ I like both cork and foam grips.
Yeah it is odd but I feel like it actually makes sense.
been considering one of these . thanks for reviewing it :)
It is a really cool rod - I am going to have fun with it.
Just placed a order. 3 packs of burro bugs. Can't wait. 😁😁😁
You rock!!
@FishAnything 🤣🤣🤣I have since gotten more! 😃
Nice rod! I like foamylish cork handles on even-days. I like corkylish foam handles on un- even days .. 😁
Hahaha
@ You are the King of UL- tackle! 🫵🏻🎣🤴
Cork all day. I like the feel better and it looks better!
Agreed!
Gonna have to get one those rods, wish it had a cork grip though.
It would be cool if they had this in a cork grip.
I like a combination of foam and cork
I really enjoy ya vids.
Thank you!!!
You can take the broken rod to a Dobyns retailer and do the warranty exchange via a shop.
I need to try to find a shop that actually carries Dobyns 🤠
@@FishAnything Some people hate the limited lifetime warranty and some people love it. For the Sierra Trout and Panfish series it costs $60 + shipping + tax. Whaaaaaat? Work pays half for anything lifestyle related? That is a neat perk.
I'm a cork guy, i don't like foam because if you don't take care of the foam it can mold up due to the fish juice and slim soak into the foam; smell bad too
Agree. Cork is used for a reason. It's more sensitive than foam.
Yeah nobody wants a rod that smells like dookie
cork thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching and sharing your answer!
That's one nice looking rod
Agreed!
I like using cork. But foam last a little longer
Try sealing your cork with a polyurethane sealer. Minwax makes stain and sealer all in one, so you can customize the look of your rod.
Yes - sealing cork rod grips is the way to go 🤠
I prefer cork. It has a more quality feel. Have you ever tested and used an Okuma Celilo? I have one in ultralight weight 6 foot six and it is a terrific rod It is really close to the quality level of a St. Croix that cost 4 to 5 times as much.
Yeah that was the first ultralight rod video I did if memory serves me correctly. Great rod for like $30.
Got this rod after watching your vid. Thanks!
But man its 100 bucks in the US but in Malaysia its roughly $50 (after discounts) with shipping included. (I live in Malaysia btw if that isnt obvious enough)
Glad you got it even cheaper!
The drum went for that trout release drama.
5” and 5”6 are the sweet length for me
Personal preference is a big part of all this!
Ethan! Have you heard the chatter about the Handling L Ultralight? Would love to hear your thoughts on it!
I have thought about picking one up but haven't done so yet. Might have to!
@FishAnything please let me know! I could send you mine!
Extra fast is really good for crappie
As long as you don't rip the jigs out of their mouth lol
How far can it cast? Nice set up. I like the lure weight rating!
It can cast as far as you would ever need as long as you are using low diameter line
Cork grip.
Agreed - I prefer that as well.
Okay so I'm in my early 40's and I remember every two piece I had and everyone used had top section going into bottom. The fish was dramatic lol
😂😂
Cork grip!
Tried and true - agreed
I do like cork the most
🤠 same
Would you still recommend the dobyns sierra trout and panfish over this rod if you don't mind spending the extra 60 bucks?
I think I would, yes. The Dobyns is a bit better balance and makes for a better all-around rod. Not currently pleased with their ownership though - I never heard from them after breaking the rod and reaching out.
I wont by a foam grip rod it HAS to be cork for me to even consider it, its the way it feels in the hand and honestly just the way it looks. Also not a big fan of that split grip style of rod i like the full cork on the butt end of the rod, i might just be old school tho
I prefer a full grip cork handle too. Simple, tried, and true!
Cork for me but you are selling me on this rod with the foam.
🤠 it is a cool rod. It would be just a little cooler with cork lol
Cork all the way. Especially because it gets really hot here and petroleum based materials will outgas all of their volatile compounds and start to deteriorate. Cork lasts. My hands keep it oiled.
Cork is the way to go!
Temple Fork has cork grips for the same price.
The rod blanks are very different in feeling, but yeah cork is my preference.
Another vote for cork
Seems like it isn't even close 🤠
What knot are you tying at 4:22?
Palomar!
Nice rod. Would be nicer with a cork grip.
Haha exactly!
What website did you buy it from i want one
Discount Tackle - linked in description!
Cork grip all day
Impossible to beat
I prefer cork grip
🤠 can't beat it
Cork grip
Can't beat it!
Mule Christmas bundle for good boys?
Haha, I am working on the jig restock and hopefully the bundles can find their way under your Christmas tree
Im a cork man. I feel like it ages better.
Nothing like an old rod that has caught 10,000 fish and has a dirty old cork grip hanging on for dear life lol
So it's pretty much a kage.
😂😂 ahh NO !!!
It has elements that certainly remind me of a Kage, but no, the Kage is definitely a superior stick. Also costs nearly double the price.
Cork easily
👊🏼🤠👊🏼
Cork
Hard to beat!
Every variety of Tatula that Discount Tackle carries is out of stock.
Oh no! Hopefully they get them back in soon.
It may be the old fart in me but I prefer a cork full grip not split grip
Yep same here. No need to get fancy. Full cork grip is almost always the most comfortable and balances well.
Yay got here first 🎉
Thank you!!
What is it with Americans and casting with your right hand just to switch hands to reel in??
Just move the handle to the left side of the reel and keep the rod in your right hand 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️

Cork grip!
Can't beat it!
Cork
The best!
Cork
Tried and true 🤠
