I think this is a planter for succulents. You fill the whole thing with potting soil and then plant succulents in a manner that mimics the "roof" of the birdhouse. The water drains out of the front hole I guess?
I know you said you know you are supposed to store your markers on their side, but IDK who came up with that. I found that I store them upside down to keep them juicy, and I've had both standing upright and side dry out on me.

I have a sneaking suspicion those flowers were waterslide decals. It would explain why they bubbled when you gesso'd them, the moisture from the gesso must have been enough to reactivate and loosen them. Im glad they went back down! You did an fantastic job :)
I think I very badly want to go thrifting again. I have some shelves I bought a long time ago that I WOULD have finished by now if not for the fact that my grandpa keeps throwing away my spray cans 😑
