Absolutely, ROTC helpful if available in high school. I was almost giving advice in my basic training in marching, but I still learned alot, good times and a few trainees were held back. Be in good physical shape and test/train before showing up to basic training and can't pass those tests.
My first time ever doing PT at Fort Jackson, I was worried. I wanted to quit. I wanted to get home as soon as I fucking could. But, at the end, we had to do this stretch where we were allowed to lay our heads down. And as I looked up, I saw the most beautiful sky I had ever seen. It made me wanna stay a little longer. I did that every day, and because of it, I graduated.
Im pretty sure thats the single leg over, it happened at the end of PRT. I remember doing it in Fort Benning, as PT was ending we did this stretch and saw the beautiful morning sky, it was a peaceful moment because no one was talking. Then you’d hear a drill sergeant yelling because someone closed their eyes😂 “This stretch doesn’t work with your eyes closed!”
My funniest but weirdest experience was this recruit wanting to touch my skin😳. The reason was that he never seen a black person in person. I told him to get out of my face🙄🤦🏾😅. He touched someone else’s skin. You can’t make this stuff up. One brother body slammed him saying to him that he has now touched a black guy. Lol. He laid there for about 2 minutes. Of course we all got smoked for an hour!!! The Drill Sgt reiterated that we are all green and equally worthless! Lol. Needless to say, that never happened again. 😂

Army PT for me was almost too easy, other than run day. However, it was a whole new world when I got to AIT. I remember hearing that AIT was like vacation compared to basic but was the complete opposite for me. We ran so much more and the physical training was much more extensive. Then all the schooling afterwards. Recently I have really been reminiscing basic training, and want to go back. It’s such a love hate relationship.
The drills have less restrictions once you're in AIT since you're considered a soldier rather than a trainee. It was the same for me when I went through BT
It’s so helpful to have videos like these. I ship out to Ft. Jackson in a week, and it’s nice to see what all I’m in for. And it helps my family to see what I’ll be doing as well
One thing to always remember, (and I Hope it helps me when I go) is that these DS are humans with a job. They're not REALLY mad at you even though they seem like it, and at the end they'll turn back into humans again. At least they did for my brothers Graduation
Recruits have parents, but NCO's are parents, even though they can go home, more often then not they barely get to spend time with their kids. Have nothing but respect for their sacrifices to mold recruits into rangers, marines, air cadet.
I feel bad for drill instructors. R lee ermy(actor of gunnery Sgt hartman in full metal jacket and a former drill instructor during the vietnam war) said that after he got out of the marine corps, he would go into certain hotels because they were the only place he could find stars and stripes(official us military news) and he described the gut wrenching feeling of seeing the name of a recruit he trained in the obituary section of the paper after they died in vietnam and ge said that that situation happened on multiple occasions. These instructors are pretty nice, calm, and soft spoken… That didn’t happen until the last two weeks when I was in. I remember us covering for our drill sergeants that would show up late or drunk!! We would still be outside and going through pt without him or until he showed up. First lesson learned is that if one gets in trouble, we all pay the penalty. That made working together much easier.

There's a part in there were he places both hands on the top of the bunk and leans back a little but immediately corrects himself. He was about to instinctively flip the whole bunk and make her do it all over again. Insider did alot for all the branches and the comments are say the same. That it seems the DIs are holding back and their only guess is it's for the cameras
Indeed, the last two weeks officers started to see you as being worthy of the unapologetic attention to detail they drilled into you. One of the most challenging, rewarding, gratifying and all-around best experiences that I've personally endured and embraced. The Drill Sargents at Fort Jackson weren't as pleasant as they appear to be here. But I get it. I recall two of my most backbreaking Drill Sargents, a short white woman from Mississippi and a bulky buffed Blackman from Michigan. Those two despised me as if I owned them money. As chance would have it, I saw them right before I jumped onto the vehicle that "moved us out and onto our assigned posts". They approached, embraced me and whispered "You made it through." Wherever those two Drill Sargents are bounteous respect and thankyou for the thirteen or fourteen weeks of life lessons while holding me accountable under the command of Capt George Suarez at Fort Jackson.

My recruiter got me to the airport when he was told to take me back home and bring me back July 1st… While I was happy to go back home for another week or so, I found out when I got to Ft Jackson that the reason was that they did the same to a lot of guys because July 1st started the New GI Bill, which had decreased educational benefits. I think this was the first time that soldiers had to pay towards the educational benefits they would receive.

It's paramount that you're honest because they may not be able to accommodate certain medical restrictions during basic, though you probably won't have any trouble bringing allergy prescriptions along.

Some days, you'll be permitted a sliver of time to either clean the barracks or your weapon; you might be able to sneak in a quick 5 min. nap here, if you're careful. When it comes to combatting exhaustion, it's just a matter of getting acclimated to the new lifestyle. Classes, no matter what, are a bitch to endure, as it'll feel like your eyelids are being weighed down by anvils; just gotta stand up whenever you feel yourself slipping into unconsciousness.
Wheeew yes so many memories... me 10 years ago when I look back on it I’m proud of the decision I made to join. Currently deployed on my 2nd tour but this is what we do it for ultimately. 💚🖤
To add to this, less than 1% actually make the DECISION to join. Of that 1%, half of them make it through MEPS. Most fail in the physicals, medical checkups, weight limits, etc. When all is said and done you’d be surprised how many people ACTUALLY make it all the way to graduation. The US military is indeed large (1.2 million+ personnel) but that number is accumulated over DECADES. That’s not including low retention & enlistment rates. At the current rate the military will gradually get smaller unless another world conflict breaks out and the standards are lowered even MORE then they are now. TLDR: 99.995% of the US population is unfit for military service.
I like the push ups & the sit ups. And the spotter encouraging you to push on. That's how you get that comradie that is so important out there in the battle.

While I do know that Benning is generally for 11B's, I went to Benning during the summer of 2014 as a 15P. Vast majority of my company were also National Guard in support MOSes.

8 years later I still hate waking up to be forced to workout with people I don’t even like just as much as I did day 1 of basic training. What got me through it was because I knew I would be there longer if I quit and I didn’t fly hundreds of miles just to sit on my ass as a quitter

I went to Basic Training at Ft. Jackson, S.C., but that was back in Summer 1981. Now days, they have more exercises to pass. We had to do PT in uniforms. Good Luck to all who goes these days.
Ah, Fall of '86. Good ol' Fort Jackson basic training. We were allowed one pair of running shoes; I never really understood the purpose for them since we were not allowed to use them. We were in combat boots and fatigues for everything. 3-mile morning run? Boots and well pressed fatigues on. Had to look sharp for the morning run. PT? Boots properly tied and fatigues well pressed. These drill sergeants are nice. Army made sure we got the drill sergeants who could curse loud, in cadence, and in our face. Several trainees did not make it through basic training, and one ended up in a psychiatric hospital. One trainee got into a fight 1 on 1 against a drill sergeant and got his butt whooped fast. I did feel bad for several trainees, they tried their best, but the drill sergeants could see weakness and would attack faster than a Cheetah chasing its meal and they wouldn't let go. I always gave the drill sergeants credit though, they always had the same get-it-done attitude on, regardless of the weather and/or personal issues and they were always up before any of the trainees were up. Drill sergeants loosened up the last 2 weeks of training and ensured everyone left was mentally healthy and had support from family members (via telephone/mail).
I don't yell nearly as much as these guys, but I do talk ALL day (6/7 hours of talk time out of an 8 hour workday) as part of my job and have for six days a week over nearly a decade. After all this time I've developed the perfect Drill Sergeant voice, (as in physically, I have the same pseudo-rasp as the guys in this video) and I LOVE using it every chance I get. It always make people jump and I find that very funny. Former service members whip their heads around so fast every time.
Some things have surely changed since I was here in 1980. I came to Ft Jackson in August and it was hot, hot, hot!!! Jogging suits and sneakers really??? We did PT in our green fatigues and white T-shirts and combat boots in red clay dirt which stained our T-shirts so was always having to buy more because once you wore them once in the trash they went!! Always had to have new shirts on everyday!!! I think Bivwack was the hardest for me, 5 mile march with full pack in the heat 🔥🔥but everything these DIs did and are doing now even though you think it's crazy or stupid has a purpose and could save your life guys so please pay attention and my thoughts are with you!! I was at Jackson in 2003. 30 years old. I was "mom" to the younger Privates. Man this brings back memories. I'd not be able to do most of these today like the pull ups etc. I need my own personal ds to be at my side to do any of this today lol. I went from insane great Shape to Potato status. Still weigh the same as I did then but my endurance and strength is so gone. I remember being smoked with the platoon by "Raise the Roof" and some arm move, we'd hold rhe arms out to our sides and raise them above our heads and clap. Over and over. That and Raise the Roof were fun. At first. The burn sucked after a while. Hydration Formation and Chow Formation. Remember that also. Red flashlight lights at night. The only time we had kind of personal freedom.

It's paramount that you're honest because they may not be able to accommodate certain medical restrictions during basic, though you probably won't have any trouble bringing allergy prescriptions along.

When it comes to combatting exhaustion, it's just a matter of getting acclimated to the new lifestyle. Classes, no matter what, are a bitch to endure, as it'll feel like your eyelids are being weighed down by anvils; just gotta stand up whenever you feel yourself slipping into unconsciousness.

To add to this, less than 1% actually make the DECISION to join.
Of that 1%, half of them make it through MEPS. Most fail in the physicals, medical checkups, weight limits, etc.
When all is said and done you’d be surprised how many people ACTUALLY make it all the way to graduation.
The US military is indeed large (1.2 million+ personnel) but that number is accumulated over DECADES. That’s not including low retention & enlistment rates.
At the current rate the military will gradually get smaller unless another world conflict breaks out and the standards are lowered even MORE then they are now.
TLDR: 99.995% of the US population is unfit for military service.

Yes and reserve too, it doesn't matter where you will go later. People from guard, active, reserve will go to basic and receive a same training.

While I do know that Benning is generally for 11B's, I went to Benning during the summer of 2014 as a 15P. Vast majority of my company were also National Guard in support MOSes.
This brings back so many memories! However, a lot has changed! I was there in the late 90's and also my dad in the mid 60's before he left for Vietnam.

I went to Basic Training at Ft. Jackson, S.C., but that was back in Summer 1981. Now days, they have more exercises to pass. We had to do PT in uniforms. Good Luck to all who goes these days.

I'm just surprised nobody moved when he said "starting position-move!" for the Half-Jack. There were always those few individuals every single time.
This fascinates me. I wish I would of done this when I was younger.
Ah, Fall of '86. Good ol' Fort Jackson basic training. We were allowed one pair of running shoes; I never really understood the purpose for them since we were not allowed to use them. We were in combat boots and fatigues for everything. 3-mile morning run? Boots and well pressed fatigues on. Had to look sharp for the morning run. PT? Boots properly tied and fatigues well pressed. These drill sergeants are nice. Army made sure we got the drill sergeants who could curse loud, in cadence, and in our face. Several trainees did not make it through basic training, and one ended up in a psychiatric hospital. One trainee got into a fight 1 on 1 against a drill sergeant and got his butt whooped fast. I did feel bad for several trainees, they tried their best, but the drill sergeants could see weakness and would attack faster than a Cheetah chasing its meal and they wouldn't let go. I always gave the drill sergeants credit though, they always had the same get-it-done attitude on, regardless of the weather and/or personal issues and they were always up before any of the trainees were up. Drill sergeants loosened up the last 2 weeks of training and ensured everyone left was mentally healthy and had support from family members (via telephone/mail).

I don't yell nearly as much as these guys, but I do talk ALL day (6/7 hours of talk time out of an 8 hour workday) as part of my job and have for six days a week over nearly a decade. After all this time I've developed the perfect Drill Sergeant voice, (as in physically, I have the same pseudo-rasp as the guys in this video) and I LOVE using it every chance I get. It always make people jump and I find that very funny. Former service members whip their heads around so fast every time.
Hell, I use it when I get disrespectful passengers on my city bus. I even told one to EXIT MY BUS…… QUICKLY-ER!!!!

Some things have surely changed since I was here in 1980. I came to Ft Jackson in August and it was hot, hot, hot!!! Jogging suits and sneakers really??? We did PT in our green fatigues and white T-shirts and combat boots in red clay dirt which stained our T-shirts so was always having to buy more because once you wore them once in the trash they went!! Always had to have new shirts on everyday!!! I think Bivwack was the hardest for me, 5 mile march with full pack in the heat 🔥🔥but everything these DIs did and are doing now even though you think it's crazy or stupid has a purpose and could save your life guys so please pay attention and my thoughts are with you!! Thank you for your service 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Be Safe......

This brings back memories of when I went through basic training at Fort Jackson in 1983. I remember we wore light grey shorts and t-shirts though, and it was pretty cold out, lol. Looks like a few things have changed, but not much. I still remember my drill sergeants too, just like they said we would, and that was a long time ago, lol.

@@illogicalgarage8641 It was pretty cool actually. Wasn't as bad as I originally thought, though going in slightly overweight kinda gave me a disadvantage in most of the physical activities. But otherwise, don't regret going at all.
I was at Jackson in 2003. 30 years old. I was "mom" to the younger Privates. Man this brings back memories. I'd not be able to do most of these today like the pull ups etc. I need my own personal ds to be at my side to do any of this today lol.
I went from insane great Shape to Potato status. Still weigh the same as I did then but my endurance and strength is so gone.
I remember being smoked with the platoon by "Raise the Roof" and some arm move, we'd hold rhe arms out to our sides and raise them above our heads and clap. Over and over. That and Raise the Roof were fun. At first. The burn sucked after a while.
Hydration Formation and Chow Formation. Remember that also. Red flashlight lights at night. The only time we had kind of personal freedom.

I also went in at 30. I sucked at push ups and run, but I could easily do 80 sit-ups. I remember being shocked when 20 year olds could barely do 10.
