  • THE FIRST JIHAD or How A Few Greek Christians Saved The U.S. Marines.
    In 1805 America fought in her first war since independence. That America prevailed was due in great part to the 38 Greek Orthodox Christians who fought side by side with the United States Marine Corps against the terrorists of north Africa. This is their story...

    Great program. God bless the Orthodox Greeks. I believe it was Winston Churchill who said, during WWII when the Greeks fought the Italian invasion of their country, that rather than Greeks fighting like heroes, "Heroes fight like Greeks". The Greek victory turned the tide of the war. Zhto H Ellas! And don't forget, from long ago, Molon Labe!

      There were no Serbs there at all. The Greeks actually comprised the Marines by leaving the rammer inside the 6pdr and shooting it at the enemy. It effectively silenced all friendly artillery at Derna. They did more damage than good.

      Indeed there were Serbs fighting with the Greeks, as well as Romanians. We have their names. We listed them in the program.

      You do realize that it was the 500 Arabs that took Derna right?

    • @GreekOrthodoxTV
      @GreekOrthodoxTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Arabs fought as mercenaries. The Greeks, and other Christians, began as mercenaries, but by the time Derna was attacked they returned the money and fought along side the Marines, even at a financial loss. They also stood by the Marines when the mercenary "500" Arabs (it was really only half that) attempted to derail the entire mission.

      The phrase used in our title, "The First Jihad", refers to the first time Muslim powers waged warfare against the United States of America. This jihad waged against American ships were certainly not the first Muslim Jihad. Islam is nothing but a history of Jihad.

    From the Halls of Montezuma,
    To the shores of Tripoli;
    We fight our country's battles
    In the air, on land, and sea;
    First to fight for right and freedom
    And to keep our honor clean:
    We are proud to claim the title
    Of United States Marine.

    Thank you for this presentation! Professional and presented to keep the interest going! A part of American history that seems to have been buried; I heard of Tripoli in school, very cursorily (this was in a day when we learned at least the first stanza of this hymn as well as the Army, Navy, and the Battle Hymn of the Republic), but had no teaching in school/college of the Greek Orthodox aid to the US Marines. Yes, a memorial would certainly be in order! Especially important now, since American history seems to actively be disappearing - the tearing down of many of our historical monuments - so that we "forget" our forebearers and God! I am a 70 year old grandmother, convert to the Orthodox Church, and proud of it! May these men's memory be eternal! (p.s. very much enjoy your productions, hope you will keep going!)

    My ancestors have been in the United States of America since the 1600s.They fought for American Independence and against the Confederates.Even though I am a 5th generation American I still talk in a English accent empire accent to be precise.To surprise you even more I only have English ancestors.I thank the Greeks for helping our nation during a time of need along with the Russians who blockaded the Confederates.
