Hypothyroidism And Mental Health Issues

  • Hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid causes many mental health issues, such as depression, low mood, and anxiety. When you have pre-existing mental health issues, as I do, hypothyroidism can then, in turn, make these worse. A few weeks after my last gender realignment surgery, my fatigue and low mood returned and a blood test confirmed that my thyroid was once again underactive. I have now had my medication increased and after 3 weeks, I am finally feeling less fatigued and my mental health has improved.

I was diagnosed with autoimmune hypothyroidism in my early 40s I don't think people realise that your thyroid gland affects EVERY cell in your body and the list of symptoms Is over 300 affects long. When I mention it I just get treated with derogatory terms about mutter mutter fat persons excuse. Its a cruel disease.

A few things ive learned from myself and 2 sisters, mom and nan all with thyroid issues is always make sure your levels are optimal.. yes they can be theoretically 'in the box' but that range especially in the UK is huge it can be the difference between living relatively normally and crawling around and sleeping 18 hours aday. Always ask for the numbers and monitor the changes yourself. As for the mental health we all agree when the thyroid is going wacky we get what we call alien thoughts. Ideas, thoughts and feelings that you know aren't you and some completely at odds with your personality pop into your head randomly. I recognise these as thyroid and the others as mental health after a while you will notice the difference. Plus the thyroid steals your mojo, everything is a struggle, appears overly complicated and to much to bear and even things you previously enjoyed becomes a chore that's a terrible symptom rarely talked about.

It really is nearly impossible to convey the quality of the fatigue you have when your thyroid is low. I remember thinking "Am I dying?" when that fatigue first descended on me. I have taken 50 mcg of synthroid for many years now, and my levels remain steady. I also have struggled with depression and anxiety over the years, and my number one piece of advice is to focus on balance and rest in your daily life. I know how tempting it is to overdo when you feel good, and then crash and burn. Your spirituality, meditation, etc. should help you center and stay calm and balanced for both the energetic days and the not-so-energetic days. You will have many more good days if you don't push your body to extremes. My friends and family now understand that I need lots of sleep (like 10 hours a night!), routine meal times, and time for just peace and quiet, as well as regular exercise. All the things you learned in A.A. will be invaluable as you navigate this new normal. Here's to feeling good and putting love into the world one day at a time!!

My whole family suffered and suffers from thyroid issues. I advise your fans here that if they do have depression issues, please get the thyroid checked out. It could be that and not the chemistry in your brain. Like you said Finn, that little thing really does control so many systems in your body and brain.

I’m right there with you. Been on medication for 11 years. I’m tired of the tests. I’m tired of the medication not doing a damn thing for my symptoms. I’m tired of the weight. I’m tired of not having energy and having EXTREME FATIGUE. I’m tired of not being able to think straight. I’m tired of the depression, anxiety and mood instability. Most of all: IM TIRED OF NO ONE HEARING ME, NO ONE UNDERSTANDING AND BEING TOLD THAT ITS IN MY HEAD, MY ATTITUDE, MY EATING OR THAT ITS MY FAULT. I feel tired, hopeless and depressed. I’m tired of caring or trying anymore because nothing works to fix the problem.

I hear you and l relate so much. I want to jump through the screen and hug you. After years of being fobbed off, told it's my mental health, things reached critical levels a d I became housebound. I've now been diagnosed with ME. Had this been diagnosed sooner, I likely would not have got as poorly as I've got. I kept pushing through because that's what I was told to do, whereas what I should have done was stop and rest. We need urgent research and awareness into neurological immune issues like these which for far too long have been seen as in people's minds. Thanks to long COVID much ignore research is now coming to light and I'm hopeful for a better future for those of us with theae chronic illness.

I hear this! Endocrinologists are not the answer. Go to a functional medicine doctor. They will test you up down and backwards but they rule things out as they go. Also, just started my daughter on t3 bc the other thyroid meds were not working. So far so good. And check your levels of D, Iron. Too low and you will feel tired and sad. And B complex is another good one. Good luck.

When your thyroid issues are put under control (after a little while of treatment) the rest will get better and better, reaching the point to where you were before the thyroid problem appeared. • @wolf649

I have hypothyroidism and depression. Similar to you they had trouble balancing my synthroid. In my case some friends pointed out, once I had been at a good level for a few weeks, that the way I talk was very different when I was thyroid low than when I was just depressed. Upon reflection I realized that my internal monologue and what I was concerned about and how fixated on it I was was generally directly related to if it was depression or hormonal. (this also happens why I'm thrown into hyperthyroidism but there are other side effects like insomnia, being constantly hungry, and loosing weight that are bigger tip offs). Then it became a process of developing a different self care regime for when it's thyroid based than when it's depression (mostly notable difference is going to get blood work and a Dr. visit). I hope they get your meds sorted asap Finn *hugs*

First blessings to you. I was born with a lingual thyroid and hypothyroidism and found out at 19 years of age. I t was about a ten year struggle with ups and down getting truly level. Here is what worked for me. #1 Finding a trustworthy Dr who looks at more than just TSH #2 Take the medication on a schedule, set an alarm. Compliance. The same time ever single day and do not eat for the hour (or more) afterwards. From my experience it matters, #3 Eat well; sugar is not my friend, watching sugar and carbs helped so much during the ups and downs. This includes alcohol, gluten, and even those fake sugars didn't do me well. These days I eat clean Seagan and am doing better than before with that. #4 Drink lots of water, tea, and avoid non-natural beverages. #4 Exercise is a huge focus for me now and manged to lose abut 50 lbs and counting by working hard. #5 Taking time for myself to sort out the tough times. #6 Having a schedule in general helps on the hard mental days, staying determined even on the hard days. #7 Sun exposure and swimming in the ocean helped with moods. I moved to the beach #8 Spiritually believing I would get to a happy healthy life, which on most days I have. I used to think I'd be sick forever but now I am not in the mindset, its like magick, one must truly in their heart believe this will get resolved over time. Gratitude for turning this around and living well.

Drinking good clean water helps. Most city water has two elements in it that can affect your thyroid. Fluoride and chlorine can block the efficacy of your thyroid meds and how well your thyroid works. Apparently both chlorine and fluoride bind with thyroxine.

This video was intriguing being it is very hard to find information on thyroid issues with men. I will start out by saying I am somewhat against the medical field in many of away, do to what has recently happened to a family member that also had thyroid issues and how the medical field treated her. But I pretty much was born with Hypothyroid and now I am age 43 as I still push on as things seem to set in more and more and not in a good way. For years I was overweight trying to battle it with grueling workout routines, aerobics, fad diets, fat burners, etc. Doctors would refuse to test me and if they did they always found nothing, telling me just to exercise and drink plenty of water. I am 5'7 and for many years I fluctuated between 285 and 310 pounds, 2 minor heart attacks in my early 30's, severe arthritis resulting in knee surgery because of things breaking off in my leg (arthritis started in my 20's), borderline diabetes, acid reflux, a blood disorder, and ed at certain times. Also, I have been diagnosed with PTSD, agoraphobia, OCD, depression, anxiety, ADHD/ADD. Most of the time I refused medications except once in which I took Welbutrin for years until side effects made things much worse and refused that as well. Almost 5 years back I found a doctor that actually tested me many times and found the thyroid issue telling me it was Hypothyroid and was very hard to find due to shutting on and off. At that point, I was barely able to get out of my recliner due to lack of energy. Though the medication helped (somewhat with energy), starting at 50 micrograms to 75 of Levothyroxine it never did anything for weight despite workout routines. It was not until almost 3 years ago I had an awakening of my own that led me to many things such as a simple 20-minute yoga routine 3 times a week, meditation and stretches every day, a very strict vegan diet (not for the faint of heart) with one fast day once a week, and incorporating Ayurveda systems into everything. I have not had to do a grueling workout in years or even lift a weight to maintain muscle mass or strength. I also take many supplements based on what is needed for thyroid and the more I read the chances are good hashimotos is part of the issue ( in which no one will look into) as well in what is going on. By doing all this at this time I managed to beat certain things with very little effort such as weight as I now weigh 140 and stay at that weight. Most of the time arthritis is manageable, almost zero heart issues unless I get stressed in which most of the time meditation helps with that and all other mental issues. I probably believe most of the mental issues is due to thyroid except the PTSD. No more borderline diabetes, no major blood issues. But the one thing that has been attacking me for months is fatigue, brain fog, and migraines (short term forgetfulness). To this day I take no other medications but the 75 of Levothyroxine. However, when I went to the doctor and told him about fatigue and migraines months ago it occurred to me that what I have read about most doctors is true. In which once they put you on the medication they think all is fixed and that the rest is all in your head. So I am pretty much stuck fighting this on my own as my faith in western medicine is very little. Being I take almost every supplement I can for a thyroid issue including herbs and even spices I have one more I am about to try and it is the only one left. As I look back on all the years I was told it was all in my head till they at least found it I cannot believe all the things I was called and how I was put down. Such as I was just fat and lazy, a loser, its all my fault, etc, most of which said by women. At least now I can be called skinny and lazy and that in itself for me makes me feel just a tad bit better. However, the thing is I am pretty much married to this regiment as it seems if I miss a day or even sway off the diet it all comes back whether physically, mentally or all of the above. So basically I live like a monk in many ways in seclusion so that the worst-case scenario will take time to reveal itself. It's been a good fight....

Hi Finn, underactive thyroid is a pain. I started on 50 ended up going to 175 and now back on to 125. Your Drs seem to be pretty pro active now with the testing. Yes thyroid can give you low mood lose your get up and go no energy when it is down you feel awful. My mum also has it she was mis diagnosed for years she was told she was suffering from depression and sent away from anti depressants. I am not trans but it played havoc with my hormones all of them female hormones and cortisol levels. I attend an endocrologist now and am stable at long last. Some people are lucky they take the levothyroxine and everything is fine. You mentioned before your mum had addinson's disease. It might be worth asking to see an endo due to your family history and the fact you are on T they do more extensive blood work. Your thyroid controls so much your hormones metabolism etc etc My endo told me to take it in the morning half an hour before food. Do not take calcium or caffine containing drinks when you take your tablet. You will get it sorted and get on the dose that is right for you.

Thanks for the update. I also suffer from hypothyroidism in the form of Hashimoto’s Disease. It’s an autoimmune disease that attacks your thyroid. I was diagnosed about 7 years ago. I’m on 150mcg of levothyroxine and even on this high of a dose I still have times where I’m extremely tired. It seems to be cyclical where I have burst of energy when my thyroid tries to function and then extreme fatigue when it can not. I could see people being misdiagnosed with bipolar II or depression when it’s really their thyroid. I also have anxiety and am working with a trainer to see if a service dog would be of assistance. I don’t have much to offer in the way of advice just to take good care and be easy on yourself when you are exhausted. I’m thinking you good thoughts from across the pond.

I also take levothyroxine. I'm hearing that it's far better for most patients to take T3 (liothyronine) along side levothyroxine. I only just heard of research which shows patients treated with just levothyroxine have an increased risk for cancer. Paul Robinson has written several books about treating hypothyroidism and he seems to know far more than most endocrinologists. I only recently heard that T3 is used to treat unipolar and bipolar depression even in patients who aren't diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I found that very interesting.

Idk if it's coincidence or wtf is going on but my normal anger issues seem to have been put in steroids because I've been fighting of rage like crazy recently and there's really no particular reason for me to be this angry all the time. Not sure what's going on. Always exhausted, feel hungry but can't really eat much, one second I feel I could almost break out in tears then the next I'm ready to knock the planet out of orbit. It's starting to drive me crazy. And of course I don't have insurance so good luck with any medical help.

I also have hypothyroidism and I am pretty sure I have bipolar 2. I get severe insomnia, severe anxiety and depression. So there is definitely a connection. Also my stupid body uses up t4 I take too fast so I can never get it up in high normal ranges: so I’m stuck at a low t4 and normal t3. I can’t even take my t4 anymore due to hyperthyroidism symptoms it’s so annoying cos it never used to do that. It’s only started this year cos I been so sick.

Hi. I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism when I was 14. Now I’m 17 and it is awful. My levels aren’t too bad. I’m mostly 4-6 levels above the normal level. But it does affect me. Especially my weight. I am also very very very lazy and I had mental issues for a while. I’m on 100 Micrograms. And idk. I’m so done. I’m just 17 and i gotta deal with this for the next like 70 years.

Hello my friend. The thyroid is a tricky blighter! It is worth returning to your doctor and stressing how bad you feel. Even when in normal range, we can feel unwell and sometimes we need more meds. This is whats happening for me at the moment too. Be your own advocate for your health and persevere with your doctor

Im so sorry to hear this, its such a nightmare when we know we arent right, and doctors arent listening! TSH levels differ a lot in diagnosis, it sounds like you need a comprehensive look at what your levels are doing, by someone who thourouly understands thyroid disorders. I would see your GP and insist on how awful you feel and that you need to see an endocrinologist, to have ALL your thyroid hormones looked at and see if you might benefit from a low dose of levythyroxine.
