While the anime makes Kaiba the apparent creator of these rules, it's interesting to note that the manga never claims this (the only rules that Kaiba seemed to have a direct hand in were the non-gameplay ones, such as the banlist and wager rules). The rules are simply known as the "Super Expert Rules", seemingly something that was official with Industrial Illusions' game and just wasn't implemented yet during Duelist Kingdom. Prior to Battle City being announced, we see Yugi and Jonouchi dueling in Yugi's hospital room and they're using using the Super Expert Rules, as Yugi tributes two monsters to summon Dark Magician, which proves that the rules already existed in-universe and weren't created specifically for Battle City.

I have my own suspicion about this rule basically created by Industrial Illusions and it came from Gilford the Lightning's effect. Kaiba probably tweaked it for Battle City, but the foundation is still from Industrial Illusions.
As we know, Gilford has the effect that if the monster is summoned using three tributes, then it can destroy all monsters the opponent controls upon summoning. As we know as well, Industrial Illusions is in total control of card productions. I doubt Pegasus would create cards usable only in Battle City because in the end, he's still a businessman. With Duelist Kingdom rules, tribute is not needed unless it's a ritual summon, so Gilford's effect text becomes pointless. It's designed for the new rules, not Duelist Kingdom one.

@@adityairawan1843 Good point. There are a few cards that don't make sense without the Super Expert Rules existing. Cost Down and Quick Attack are two more good examples.

@@rob19ny It is possible that Joey was under a lot of stress so it is not unreasonable to think that he might forget something that has just recently been added. Either that or he saw Yugi tributing and just thought: "Huh, how nice of him to randomly destroy his own monsters."

Kaiba's tribute rule not favoring Blue Eyes or Obelisk might have been for his confidence making him decide to go for a handicap but also could be that he knew going in that he'd have to go up against two other god cards so putting them under restrictions would be a way that he could have a better chance of beating them.

I feel like it probably was for making sure he didnt get OTK'd by someone with a god card getting it in their opening hand. I think it was more because he removed the weird abilities that monsters had before Battle City (Kuriboh exploded, Mammoth Graveyard rotted, Attacking the moon, etc) but if he only removed that, then without a nerfing, it'd make winning too easy since Blue Eyes would be a 3000 atk monster that is easy to summon and opponents would have a much harder time countering it.
So by giving himself a minor nerf, he justified removing one of the largest threats to his monsters...

It may have been dub-only, but the "Hard One Spell Card of a specific Name" rule was also referenced in Joey (Jounichi) vs. Espa Roba. The Roba brothers on the roof pick out a Graceful Dice card in Joey's hand, and spot him drawing a 2nd "Dice" card they misidentify as another Graceful Dice. When Joey's Graceful Dice gave him an unfavorable roll, Joey started to play his 2nd Dice card, but Espa was saying Joey was pulling an illegal move, saying that since Graceful Dice was already activated, another couldn't be played that turn, before Joey plays his card, revealing "Skull Dice" instead, which rolled in favor of Joey to turn the duel as well as expose Espa's fraud.
Also, the 40-card deck rule must be closer to the RL rules of 40-60 cards; Joey vs. Weevil was tampered when Weevil had a random kid plant Parasite Paracide in Joey's deck, bumping his deck to 41 cards. This is also true for Joey vs. Mako when Joey forgot to remove Parasite Paracide from his deck prior to his duel. I'm sure Kaiba's Duel Disks would be able to note the discrepancy and prevent the duels from an "Illegal Deck Count" if there was a strict 40-card limit, yet both continued despite Joey's 41-card deck.

anime rules are all a bit weird, because they have the impossible task of adapting the crazy stuff from the manga while still advertising the real life cardgame. In the manga you could only play one spell and one trap from your hand per turn, in the same way that you can only summon one monster. That's why Espa wasn't worried about Joey's two Graceful Dices, he can only play one, with the twist being that the other card was Skull Dice, a trap card. The rule didn't exist in the real life game though and fillers had everybody play many more spells, so they changed the exact details up into players not being able to play the exact same card twice per turn.

Regarding fusion summoning and quick attack: In the manga it's specified that SPECIAL SUMMONED monsters aren't allowed to attack the same turn they are summoned. *A LIST OF ALL THE RULES*
-Participants must have a ranking of at least five out of eight stars (manga and original anime) or level three out of five (English dub anime) to receive a free Duel Disk, which is required to participate.
-Players must play with a Deck of at least forty cards, with at least one rare card in it.
-Players begin with 4000 Life Points.
-Players can only have up to 6 cards in his or her hand unless the card "Infinite Cards" is in play on his/her side of the field. In the manga, the hand limit is 7.
-Players have a maximum of five minutes to think during their turn.
-One Normal Summon is allowed per player per turn. Monsters can be Summoned in face-up Attack Position, face-up Defense Position or face-down Defense Position.
-Level 4 or below monsters can be Summoned during a Normal Summon.
-Level 5-6 monsters needed one Tribute in order to Normal Summon.
-Level 7-9 monsters required two Tributes to Normal Summon.
-Level 10+ monsters required three Tributes to normal summon (e.g "The Winged Dragon of Ra", Level 10).
-When a Fusion Monster is Tributed, that monster is counted as a number of monsters equal to the number of Fusion Material Monsters that were used.
-Fusion Monsters must wait one turn after they are Summoned before they can attack, though the "Quick Attack" card can be used to circumvent this. In the manga, any monster Ritual Summoned or Special Summoned from the Graveyard also cannot attack the turn it is Special Summoned.
-If a player has no monsters on their field, their opponent can attack directly.
-Each player must ante at least their rarest card and a minimum of one Locator Card in their possession. The winner of the Duel obtains their opponent's rarest card and Locator Card, as wagered.
-The contents of either player's Graveyards are not public knowledge, and an opponent may not look through their opponent's Graveyard.
-If you have to discard cards from your hand or Deck, you do not have to show them to your opponent.
-You must stick to the tournament's list of forbidden and limited cards. Cards that directly damage[note 1] players or monsters, such as "Raigeki" and "Hinotama" were forbidden. Only one copy of "Monster Reborn" could be included in one's Deck.
-Certain cards that enabled players to Special Summon one specific Type of monster(s) can affect both sides of the field ("Dark Magic Curtain" and "The Flute of Summoning Dragon", for example).
-Players were not allowed to use two or more Magic Cards of the same name that increase a card's ATK points within the same turn.
-The opponent can activate a card or card effect before the turn player draws a card during their Draw Phase.
-If a monster is offered as a Tribute by the effect of another card while being attacked by an opponent's monster, the enemy's attack is negated. The Japanese version of the anime and manga calls this rule, "Sacrifice Escape".
-Replays are not an established mechanic. While a direct attack is occurring because the attacked player controls no monsters, if the attacked player adds a monster to their side of the field, that monster intercepts the attack; if a monster is targeted for an attack, but it leaves the field before damage calculation, the attack ends.
-Players can Set Field Spell Cards in their Spell & Trap Card Zones but when they activate them, they get moved to the Field Zone.
-Field Spell Cards can be activated during the Battle Phase.
-A non-Quick Play Spell Card can be activated during the Battle Phase.
-A Set non-Quick Play Spell Card can be activated during your opponent's turn.
-When a Spell or Trap is destroyed by a card effect, it is negated even if the card that destroyed the Spell/Trap doesn't negate its effects.
-A monster that becomes an Equip Card is treated as both a monster and an Equip Card.
-Effects that require the player and the opponent to have cards in their hand can be activated even if one of the players has no cards in their hand.
-Tokens do not take up a Monster Zone.
-When a Token is Summoned, it becomes the attack target instead.
-When a card is sent to the Graveyard, it is sent to the controller's Graveyard, not the owner's.

I’ve waited so long for someone to make a video on these rules, because as it seems to me, certain kind of people can’t read when watching the anime or reading the manga. But I think you’re missing a lot of things. I demand some updates to this video.
    1. Not just Fusion Monster, but any monsters Special Summoned from the Extra Deck (Fusion Deck) and Special Summoned from the GY must wait 1 turn. The Fusions are the only one that exist in DM so that’s why the Anime and Manga only apply to them.
    Evidences to the point:
    - Yugi summoned Kaiba’s 3 Blue-Eyes from the GY during his Duel with Kaiba and Kaiba did not attack with them.
    - Marik also mentioned this rule in his Duel against Bakura. That’s why Ra has a Special Effect that allows it to attack whenever it is summoned.
    2. Cards that do direct damage without cost is not allowed. However, cards that deal damage with an attach cost or condition is allowed.
    Evidence to the point:
    - Marik uses Nightmare Mirror in his Duel against Jonouchi. Unlike you mentioned in this video, all cards in Marik’s Deck is real. Only cards in his minions’ Deck are fake. Do you think why Marik created an international crime organization to steal rare cards if he himself can’t use them?
    3. In addition to to normal attack, some number of cards gain Special Attack that attack outside of the Battle Phase. These attack can still be blocked by certain card effects that can block normal ones, like Swords of Revealing Light.
    Evidences to the point:
    - In Yugi’s Duel against Doll, Osiris’s Special Attack can’t attack and destroy Kuriboh because Doll’s Nightmare Steelcage exists on the field.
    - We see this rule appears again outside of Battle City. In Yugi’s Duel against Bakura in the Memory World Arc, Gandora’s attack is treated as a Special Attack.
    4. Only 1 Spell/Trap can be Set during your turn. This is only applied in Manga and do not transfer well to the Anime. That’s why in some Duel, you can see why the character didn’t make some more optimal play. Exchange is usually the card attributed to this.
Edit: As someone has mentioned in the comment section, an Evidence to this point would be Temple of the Kings. It allows its controller to Set 2 cards instead of 1.
    5. The Rules that are applied during Battle City are not necessarily created by Kaiba. They are referred in the Manga as Super Expert Rules, in contrast to the Standard Rules that are applied during Duelist Kingdom. Which means at some point in the past, Pegasus created them, and Kaiba only chooses to enforce it in his tournament. These Rules are like different formats exist in the current Yugioh, like Goat, Traditional or Common Charity.
This list will get updated when there are more to come.

To clarify your rules about one copy of a Spell per turn and Quick Plays:
This is because of the manga. Each player could only use one Spell from their hand per turn and set only one Trap per turn.
If you wanted to use more than one spell per turn, those spells not activated from your hand, would have to be set from a previous turn. All Spells are also quick play and can be played at anytime.

Compatible attack types can combine their attacks for increased damage, like Summoned Skull's lightning + Alpha's magnetism resulting in a single attack of 2500 + 1400 damage, + a 200 combination bonus.
High level monsters can be sent directly to the GY by illegally Summoning them without tributes. This still takes up your Normal Summon.
Not that you need the above ruling though, since apparantly it's legal to just discard cards from your hand whenever you want, unless Bonz wrongly thought this was legal (at first he thought Yami Bakura "just" discarded his hand out of cockiness, not by an effect/cost).

It should be noted that generally speaking, cards in Yugioh exist in the manga first, anime second, then finally the OCG/TCG. If card has an effect that it doesn't in the anime, it's due to the OCG/TCG makers. The artwork for a lot of cards comes directly from the manga, so it's the ultimate authority in such matters. Kaiba didn't actually create Battle City rules, they were called the "Super Expert Rules" and already existed, and it stands to reason that cards have different effects depending on which ruleset is being used. A lot of the "useless" monsters with low ATK/DEF but with more than four stars are perfectly playable in the 2000 LP quick-play ruleset, and I'm sure a lot of cards were made just for that format.

Kaiba didn’t actually create the rules. At least not in the manga. In the manga this rule set existed for a little while before the tournament and was called “Super expert rules” Kaiba decided to use these rule in his tournament for two reasons. 1 it was the latest rule set for elite tournaments and it would be strange for him to use an older rule set.
      2. It is the only thing that nerfed the gods. Remember in the anime/manga the gods don’t have the three tributes as an effect. That’s only because the were the only non fusion level 10 monster to my knowledge.

You know it would be interesting to actually play these rule set in the card game now. But there needs a rule limit for links. Like tokens cannot be used for link summoning unless it's by effect or summoning requirement for that link monster. And make it work for Synchros as well, unless the tuner like Mare Mare effect goes off, making tokens to Synchro play. It have to be a tuner or synchro requirement to use tokens.
Now that will be interesting to play BCT rules in modern YGO.

  • @gldni17
    @gldni17 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think there's one additional rule that if a duelist is rendered unable to continue for ANY reason, they are considered to have lost, no replays of duels if the person recovers. But this is more realistically an issue of time, and would be pretty standard. However, due to Kaiba's own personal greed, this option was a valid option to defeat an opposing duelist, and both Odion and Joey lost because of an inability to continue.
Something I also noticed is that when Yugi beats Strings, he does so by forcing him to draw outside of the draw phase, so Card of Safe Return is compulsory. This means that the rule of losing if unable to draw in the draw phase extends to any time the game forces you to draw, which I don't think is pointed out in that manga text shown earlier but is standard for real world YGO if I remember right.

I can think of at least one instance where the exactly 40 card deck rule was broken. In the Yugi vs Marik finals, Kaiba shows up to give Yugi the Fiend's Sanctuary spell card to counter Ra. He tosses it to Yugi, who looks at it and adds it to his deck. But wouldn't he already have 40 cards going into the duel? He never removes any card, so his deck would now be 41 cards.

    • @deletedTestimony

    • @animemixer1
      @animemixer1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Celtic1020 Of course things can happen off-screen. But side decking off-screen means they still likely have 40 cards once done. What Yugi did was just take one extra card and add to his already complete deck without removing any other card, thus making it contain at least 41 cards, not 40.

    • @TheDeathmail
      @TheDeathmail 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@animemixer1 Again, the point is that we should probably assume he actually DID remove a card and we just didn't see it...

    • @animemixer1
      @animemixer1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TheDeathmail I went back to the episode in question to make sure I remember everything correctly. And sure enough, Yugi takes the card Kaiba gives him, and all on screen adds it to his deck, shuffles and places the deck back in the duel disk. The duel then starts shortly thereafter. There is no removal of any card at any point. That deck had a minimum of 41 cards at the moment that duel got underway, unless Yugi had just 39 cards in the deck just as the duel was about to start, which would be even more ridiculous than starting the duel with 41 cards.
Honestly, like it's mentioned in the video, rules are casually broken here and there. And it might even be that the rule isn't to have EXACTLY 40 cards, but AT LEAST 40 cards, and we're looking at some mistranslation. Even if it's not, Yugi having a 41 card deck as the duel starts is probably the least serious cheat anyone has ever done in the history of Yu-Gi-Oh.

You know, another thing I noticed was that, while the sacrifice rule addition seems to hinder Kaiba a lot, he did that while also removing monster abilities.... not effects, but the freedom and weird random powers the monsters had (Kuriboh explodes, Battle Ox is super effective against fire types, Mammoth Graveyard rots, etc)
And if he didn't add the sacrifice rule while also taking away the abilities, then the duel will obviously seem rigged since it'd give him way too huge of an advantage.
And being able to use spells each once per turn also protects his Blue Eyes more...
Who'd trust a tournament where Kaiba gives himself way too obvious an advantage by destroying any equalizing factors other monsters would have had???

The reason for adding tributes is because the original Japanese run of the arc in the comics coincided with the release of first real life version of Duel Monsters, so the rules in the comics were updated to be more in line with the official rules. Since the second Yu-Gi-Oh TV series (the first one that was dubbed) is primarily an adaptation of the Duelist Kingdom, Battle City, and Millennium World arcs it follows this change as well, with the rules updating at the same point plot-wise.

Would be interesting to see if the anime's internal rules had changed in Kaiba's other tournament, the filler arc Grand Prix. I know that filler arcs tended to be closer to the real rules - a lot of the weird stuff in Battle City came from lifting parts of the duel from the manga, which was written before the game was out - so I'm curious if the KC Grand Prix differs from Battle City in rules. Like I know the real explanation is "filler arc, also card game was already out" but it could be fun to look at it from a "Okay let's see Kaiba's new rules" perspective.
I *think* that for example the "spell cards during opponent's turn" rule doesn't work there, for example, but I could be wrong.

Almost all anime-original duels post-Battle City follow OCG rules. Many Battle City duels were revised to follow the OCG rules more closely such as extending the length to fit anime episodes or minimizing the "spells during your opponent's turn" thing you mentioned. Of course they couldn't be changed completely while keeping the major moments from the manga.

It should be noted that the summon sickness thing on the Fusion monsters actually extended to ALL special summoned monsters in the manga. This is apart of the reason why Mai summoned Ra in her duel against Marik (the special summoned Harpies couldn't attack, so she didn't have game without summoning Ra), and why the Egyptian God to make good use of Monster Reborn was Ra (it had an effect to circumvent that rule while the others would be sent back to the GY before they could get an attack in).

I think the first rule about the deck size might be that the decks must be at least 40 cards. An example indicating the possibility that decks could have been larger was when the 4-way duel was done at the Duel Tower to determine the semi-final pairings. Roland says that duelists must limit their decks to 40 cards for that duel, most likely in the event that players could have been adding the rare cards they won to their decks without making substitutions.
We also see Yugi immediately add Fiend's Sanctuary into his deck as the platform rises to duel Marik, no opportunity to swap out a card for it.
