Flower is a game where I learned something about myself as a gamer, that I can enjoy a game just for it's beauty. Their marketing played a big part in setting up my mind to appreciate that about it. I heard the developer interviewed on a tech and culture radio show/podcast called Spark on CBC.ca. The puzzles in the game weren't difficult, the controls were simple, and the game was very compelling to interact with. The game marked an evolution of the gaming community into creating more mature complex emotional experiences... not just adrenalin and puzzle solving but beauty and peacefulness could be an integral and compelling part of the gaming experience.
Right! I really enjoyed playing Flower as well. I did not think about the game for some time, but now that you talk about it I see a lot of similarities to what I am trying to achieve with my game. I will have another look at the game. Thanks for the reminder! If I could create a similarly calm and beautiful experience like in Flower, I would be very happy. : ) Do you remember what exactly it was in their marketing that opened you up to the idea that games can be calm, peaceful experiences as well?
@@animakesgames Oh sry I didn't see the notification :'D I'm good thanks - Just doing my job now I guess haha! Hope you are well as well apart from the project ;D
Aw, that´s a good one. ^.^ I loved Short Hike, played it through in one sitting. It has this incredibly lighthearted feeling and I still get that feeling when I think of it. So lovely. : )
I like thinking about how small and big events throughout history determined, where humanity is now and also if it could have gone different! Eager to see more of the devlog and the game. It looks really cool so far! Keep it up, Anni!
Thanks you! ^.^ Yeah, that is super interesting indeed... what is also mindblowing for me sometimes is to find out what people were capable of doing already back then... Like, we were already going to space before we even had computers! (meaning the machine, not the job title for humans... I just saw the movie "Hidden Figures" some days ago) I mean, how does anyone do anything without computers? :D I don´t know.
@@animakesgames for me it is yes. I'm new to game development so it is definitely helping bridge the gap into programming. I'm definitely more art and design than programming 😅👍❤
@@XanderwoodGameDev By now I do believe one can become good (maybe not great, but certainly good) at anything one wants to learn. I am just trying to be honest with myself about my skills and choose a project that I can handle. Good luck on your learning quest! : )
Wow, this seems like a really cool idea for a game. I really really like the art style. It is very vibrant, calming, and it feels familiar, not that I have really seen it before, I ain't really sure how to explain it, but I guess, welcoming sort of, if that makes sense. :P I am not sure which game has taught me the most, but the game that has left the biggest impact on me was a little game called Valiant Hearts, it makes me shiver to this day thinking about it. It is truly a rollercoaster of a story.
Oh thank you, I am glad the artstyle is resonating so much with you : ) that´s such a nice compliment. I just looked up Valiant Hearts, I did not hear about it before. It sounds like the game has a very rich story! :O Just added it to my wishlist, haha. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Anneke! Finally I got the time to see the whole VLog. I have to admit, that this is a amazing first VLog that you have produced! Also the decision to cut the game in three different sections is a good chiose, so that you can also grow with every game you make. I hope, that you are able to ship this game as soon as possible and get some feedback, so that you can include the feedback into the next part of your game. Keep up this amazing work and I wish you the best of luck and strength to make your dream come true!
Thank you Theo!! Yes, you are very right. It is hard to balance passion and scope sometimes. But I am trying my best to keep the game small enough. : ) I think I can learn from the two of you in that regard.

positively! I am still here, yes. Mostly I am learning a lot from other developers that also go through this process. Everyone has their unique skillset, so I can ask for a hint in the right direction if I am ever stuck on a problem for too long. It is also helpful that I can live a frugal live. It does not cost a lot to be here and I only need to work a little bit on the side to be able to sustain myself.
The aesthetics of this game is so nice!
