7 Years of Indie Game Development - The Making Of Sapiens

- Share my 7 year journey as we look at how a hugely ambitious but successful game is created by a solo indie dev, from the first concepts to the early access release on Steam.
It's been a long and at times difficult process, filled with many obstacles and breakthroughs. The development of Sapiens has changed my life. I've learned so much and grown both as a developer and a person. But there is still a lot of work to do, and I'm looking forward to leading Sapiens to its full potential, through Early Access and beyond.

I don't know you at all, but in the publishing scene at the end, when I saw your family standing behind you, experiencing the same excitement, supporting and applauding you, I realized what a beautiful family you are, what a good father you are, and you did this for your family. sometimes you don't need to know, but I felt you closely my friend, you have accomplished something very nice, considering the family support and living conditions for many years, you have finally overcome the difficult paths, you have been a great source of motivation for me, congratulations
Just piggybacking to affirm most of this, with a caveat on "you did this for your family". That's not necessarily true, and it's no less admirable if it's not. You can do things for yourself even if you have a family, and that doesn't detract from the nobility of this pursuit, nor your love for your family. Rooting for you!

at the end i was also excited especially the kids, i am thinking they probably very excited too which is very amazing to think! and overall it's just exciting really... it's like you are also him being excited about it being release by clicking a button 😃
Fantastic game with seemingly endless potential. Other games in this genre feel outdated in comparison. Impressive for EA release.

31:50 I really like the name Sapiens that you landed on. Because that name isn't JUST prehistoric humans. It is a game about Sapiens. It could be prehistoric, medieval, modern, future, or anything.
Because of this you aren't stuck with only cavemen. It can go as far as you want and the modders want.

I'm also an Indie Game Developer, but develop games for mobile phone. After two years of hard-working, I've completed publishing two games on Android and iOS stores: Squid Cannon, Twitch Balls. I will continue to develop more games as it's not only my favorite but also my ambition to be successful in Game Development.
Been one heck of a ride watching this project for the past few years and finally seeing it come together! You've made something really special and I wait to see where you go from here!

Been playing this game for the last week and it's brilliant! I'd love to see some sort of interaction with Rivers and the "terraforming" that can be used to create Sapien-Made Canals and such! Looking forward to the future updates 🙂

wow, the dedication you have man, it's trully impressive! the longest I've worked on a project was for about 1 year I can't even imagine spending 7 years on a project without quiting or loosing track of what's what, and you documented the entire thing as well, This channel is a gem! and I'm sure gonna go back and watch the entire series and learn from it.
I hope to see this game one day on steam or other platforms because it deserved to be seen and played for all the dedication and time you put into it. keep it up!

It is truly an amazing journey to have been with you for the past 4 years. I remember when I was 17 and started my Blender journey and said this game is going to be unique and I still think it is.

I remember watchin the first devlog about 4 years ago, and then this fell of my radar. But now looking at this, the whole journey.... WOW, I'm truly amazed.
This is incredible. I first played the game on the Steam Next Fest earlier this year and the 3 day demo made me so eager to play the full thing. I bought it right after launch and have been playing a bit every day ever since. The game was already amazing enough on its own, being so much fun already and having so much potential to future additions, but now knowing its full story it got even better.
What you've done is really inspiring and motivating, thank you so much for the game you're developing and for sharing its history! I'll be sure to follow this journey from now on, all the best to you!

I've watched all the videos in this play list and I have to say I am greatly impressed with the dedication you have for this project. Sapiens is a fantastic game with unlimited potential and playability. I've watched about 100 hours of play throughs just to see where different players took their tribes. I'm very much looking forward to the first added content release and following the growth of Sapiens. Civilization is the game I have played the most with 2,000 hours in Civ 5 and probably 10,000 hours overall the versions, I can see myself spending uncounted hours in Sapiens. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication and all that is to come.

It was a joy to watch this. It was so interesting to see the cascade effect during the game development. You made an entire world, which leads to the idea of many tribes, so a multiplayer. You made the grass look nicer, so everything else also changed. It feels like it is not you who are developing the game, but the game is itself coming to life through you. You are the medium, the Hermes of your own game. Another unrelated point was you saying how you had to make your own engine - you could have opted for using Unreal or Unity, but that would make things easier and you wanted things to be harder, otherwise, you wouldn't feel the passion to do it! That was very stoic of you! Congratulations on the game!
