Poor Brad, one day this director is going to pay for everything he did to this poor boy to go through. Brad left a son when he passed away in 2008.
    RIP Brad Renfro.

Wow...astonishing! Didn't even know of the existence of this book and movie let alone the sad dramatic disturbing story behind it. Must have lived under a rock for a while although I'm aware of the overall abuse and psycho maniacs in the film and music industries. Intense review man, glad you brought this one up. Ian McKellen is a true hero to me.

Thanks for the video. I had totally forgotten that Singer directed this. That makes it a little more creepy. There was a time when I thought he was the greatest director in Hollywood. I loved the movie when I saw it in theaters and actually thought the ending was better, and the story a bit more realistic. And yes, Sir Ian is a treasure. Much appreciation for your efforts and I hope you have an awesome holiday season.

Yeah, until I started working on this video I didn’t know about any of this. Turns out I’ve seen a lot of his movies, I just never knew it.
Thanks for continuing to check in with me, Paul. I appreciate you. Have a great holiday and take care of yourself.

It’s quite sad when good directors always get outed as creeps, but that’s Hollywood for ya, not everyone in Hollywood are creeps, but there are some sadly.

I had no clue until now about the tragedy of Brad Renfro and sexual abuse of Bryan Singer. There was a period of many years that I subscribed and read Entertainment Weekly cover to cover. I was a voracious consumer of celebrity news but these things transpired after after I gave that up. I was confused at the start of the video, because I didn't even recognize or remember who Brad Renfro was, so I didn't know why you were showing his interview. I looked up Brad Renfro and the only other movie he was in that I saw or even heard of was Ghost World. I love that movie but I didn't remember Brad's character until I looked through the images and found a scene with him in it. I never connected him as the same actor in those two movies until now. This video was very informative for me.

I didn’t know anything about Renfro or Singer prior to making this video. I am unsure how the Singer controversy never landed on my radar. Im fairly plugged into the news in general, which leads me to believe the story was being downplayed and underreported by the media.

In December 20, 2021, another Bryan victim went public talking about him

A friend of mine sent me an article from Variety from that same date. The accusations just keep piling up.

Brad renfro was a brilliant actor who died too young he unfortunately became another victim that the Hollywood industry used and abused
May he rest in peace 😥🙏

Yeah, it’s a heavy story. I hadn’t realized any of this stuff until starting to research for the script. Terribly sad and tragic.

The ending of the novella Apt Pupil has been the most impactful ending for me for any King novel, novella or short-story. I really wish the movie had stuck to the novella.

I 100% agree! The reworked ending of the movie was my least favorite part of the entire film. BOOOOO!

6:54 perhaps Joel Schumacher is also culpable here--he not only cast Renfro in his inchoate film role, but also Corey Haim, another tragic case who followed a similar path.

I'm glad that Bryan singer has been exposed for what he truly is I'm not surprised that it took two decades for him to be exposed the down side of Hollywood is that many people choose to protect the predators than the victims

I think the movie adaptation is creepy in the fact that Renfro’s character lives and blackmails the guidance counselor instead of killing him and eventually dying in the novella. His character seems to embody “the next Hitler” who is out there somewhere. It’s a disturbing thing to think about, especially in today’s political climate.

    • @pendafen7405
      @pendafen7405 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

The film to me is more disturbing *because* it's restrained, moreso than the bloody outrageous book. The movie has a connotation of pernicious realism, like the boy or the old man could easily be your neighbours. S*nger's stock-in-trade when he made films was a cool, detached, bright and slick Millennial foreboding and subtext rather than overt Guignol and shadowy horror that the Stephen King ouevre tends to demand.

So Renfro was only aged 16-17 and relatively green when he performed in Apt Pupil? That's unreal, his work feels like an accomplished performance of an experienced young man, not a boy. And he held his own easily opposite Sir Ian McKellen, by then a top veteran of stage & screen for 40 years. Still, one wonders whether Renfro was scarred by not only his trauma but also the part he took on, it's a disturbing role even outside of being directed by an abuser.

You are correct that drug abuse affects more than just Hollywood. However, a teen's job at Taco Bell isn't encouraging, supporting or supplying their employees'' habit.
Your video would be better if you got off the soapbox. Many of your viewers can process information and come to conclusions without being told what to think.
