I just installed spitfire tuning tuner to my 1998 Lexus GS 400 and a k&n intake and black hart racing breaks and sway bars ! Just from the spitfire tuning already tuned to stage 2 I gained 88 hp and 46 torque. The next thing is getting is exhaust system tho should be sweet
I agree with some of the others. About 10yrs ago I had the Apexi Neo with a Boomslang harness on my car. I also had S&S headers, K&N FIPK and Borla exhaust. I pushed 13.0 - 13.1 AFRs and had 276WHP on a dyno dynamics dyno (not a mustang dyno that over-inflates numbers). The car was very quick as I also had a high stall TC and 3.73 Supra LSD. So don’t be afraid to go 13.1 AFR on an all motor GS, it’s not too lean in open loop (hitting throttle). Of course, I sold the Neo and harness to someone on Club Lexus when I got my SRT stage 3 SC. Now that’s fun! But was a tuning nightmare with laptop. Good to go now though.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. I’m not trying to argue, but let’s just say the tuner started bringing your AFR down until power started dropping off. Then you’d have the same power increase at a safer AFR. Just food for thought. Again, thanks!
I've got my AFR for WOT at around 11.5 +/-, sites have said around this is 'best rich torque at wide open throttle' would this be suitable/safe for these cars or should I aim for 12.2 +/- which is 'Safe best power at wide open throttle, thanks. (Year old comment, I know).
Love the old schoo afc tuning.. haha thats how i did my turbo sentra. Now i got a 300hp sentra . Proble with safc is it is real hard to have a nice idle, you got to compromise somewere
Thanks. Funny enough, my idle is perfect. At cold start it’s in open loop, so I just left the low rpms zeroed out. Then it kicks over to closed loop at idle and the SAFC doesn’t do anything at idle anyway. So it works out well for me.
Sorry, I have not dyno'd the car yet so I do not have numbers for you. A healthy GS400 with mild mods and a proper tune should be in the 260-270whp range.
I bought an 01' gs300 w/183k for 1700$. Got it a few months ago. I had to do maintenance but now the car runs smooth and strong. I hope to het at least 300k miles with it. Do you think thats a probability?
Thank you for doing videos like this! Anyway, I was wondering if your ecu has adapted and readjusted itself to stock afr values during high throttle. I understand that during closed loop or low throttle it will relearn, but what about high throttle? Just wanna ask from someone who has personally done it. I have been reading up on this and there are lots of people who love it and hate it. Thanks!
Hi - in open loop my ECU has NOT over-ridden the piggyback AFR effects. I know people claim that happens but I’m here to tell you it’s false. Yes, in closed loop (low map) the ECU will just fight to hit 14.7, and that I can confirm. But in open loop my AFRs have held to my targets. The exception is major changes in weather, where I’ll see the AFR move a little, but I’m talking .1-.2 in value. I can tell you with 100% certainly that open loop AFR values remain constant and consistent.
@@ForwardMomentum Thanks for the response! I plan on doing this to my 1uz Supra using an sc400 non vvti ecu. Despite being different ecus I am sure I will get similar results to you! Hope to see a dyno vid soon.
@@samjonas875 sounds great. I’m not going to waste $250 getting a dyno tune. My car is definitely in the standard range with these mods because my 0-60 confirms it pretty well. So on the A/FC did you mean you pulled fuel to lean out from your 12.3 to 12.7. Just trying to figure out how to operate it and if it is worth doing to my modified is300. You are very thorough with your explanations. thank you
Thanks for commenting. I went back through the video and I was unable to piece together where I may have contradicted myself or misspoke per your comment. Nonetheless, to pull fuel you have a lesser values on the NEO maps (you're correct). Funny enough since I shot this vid K&N took back the FIPK and gave me a FULL REFUND. When I went back to the stock intake system my car runs SO MUCH BETTER. Now my tune is all negative numbers. I'm pulling nearly 12% in places. I probably need to do another street tune episode as I no longer recommend aftermarket intakes on these cars. The stock system is superior. I love having the NEO for tuning and tweaking and now that I am manual I can easily tune the low rpms (previously I could not). LMK if you have other questions!
Hello brother, this is Moe! I was wondering if you could tell me exactly how much horsepower you gained from the apexi neo. Seriously considering it fir my bone stock 98 GS400. Thanks in advance!
Sorry, I never dyno’d it due to the ridiculous cost of sessions around here. I would estimate 10-15whp midrange and a little lower elsewhere. You have to have a way to street or dyno tune it to do it right though.
Would running 11.5 +/- be safe for these motors, that's what I'm currently running and it feels great but would rather have reliability than extreme power. Thanks.
Couple of quick questions. I put a neo in my IS300 tonight and still a bit unsure. Did you change any of the fuel map settings before driving or does leaving it at 0 leave it at the stock factory map? Also did you mess with the setting where it changes what throttle % for high and low map settings?
I left mine zeroed out and tuned from there. The %’s don’t matter much because we’re only dealing with open loop tuning, which is usually around a 70-100% load factor. One thing to keep in mind is that your car will start cold in open loop. So your first couple high map settings (mine are 1900 and 2200) can effect how the car runs at start-up. So I leave those zeroed. My low throttle is 15% and hi is 70%. I progressively pull full from 2500-6500, from -6%- -12% to hit 12.5AFR. Just so you have a reference. Hope that helps!
It’s never plug n play. It always requires a custom harness or direct wiring, as noted in my install video. Apexi has a huge db of wiring schematics to look at.
On the is350, the ECU will re-learn the adjustments and all gains will be lost. Clublexus members have reported the ECU compensates and they have to be resetting the Apexi every hundred miles/weeks or so. I wonder if the same thing happens with yours.
Interesting considering open loop is a fixed value. The NEO simply shoves the ECU to a different fuel value in the matrix table. The ECU doesn’t learn anything in open loop - it just reacts. I’d love to see AFR data logging from the IS350 guys showing the ECU is reverting. My NEO and impact on AFRs has never budged unless I did a significant mod or the weather changed drastically, and even then the changes were slight.
i'm driving corolla AE100 with SAFC2 and AEM wideband, yes the ECU will try hard to compensate back to AFR 14.8 but the adjustment of ECU has it's limit so u need to go on drive and adjust untill the ecu cannot compensate anymore, then it will be the final data u need for your car. but it has an drawback, when u disconnect battary or reset ECU it takes time for ECU to reach it's compensate limit
Again, I’m talking open loop. The ECU never fights for 14.7 in open loop. It only fights for it in closed loop. I recently discovered that the NEO will work in closed loop as well, in regards to fuel trims. So on the low maps I can adjust the values and see it in the trims. And yes, it holds. Point taken about resets though. I have noticed that it takes a bit for the ECU to get back to where it was after a reset. Of course values in the NEO remain the same.
I don’t know what engine you have, but you can get a few HP on the V8 models. The 2JZ is probably a waste of money. If you have a 430 (3UZ) you can get the ECU modded by Quantum Auto. Just do that.

Yes, but the tune is whacked. I have only seen it done on other cars though. You can actually get pops on this car with the right exhaust combo due to the cam overlap. When my exhaust was insanely loud I could get a pretty loud few pops after creating back pressure in M mode, then tapping the throttle to go again. I can still do this now, it’s just not as loud. So the answer is yes, but I haven’t done it because I don’t want to drive around with that tune in place.
It’s hard for me to answer for you. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most difficult, I’d rate this a 5. Requires more thinking than mechanical ability. You got this!
Definitely want to see a dyno vid to see some real numbers. Not sure I want to modify mine unless I can get at least 25+ whp gain with bolt ons and tune for reasonable $$. Nope. Each car is different. This AFR yielded the most midrange power on my 1UZ. Your settings and results may vary, but there isn’t one hard and fast rule.

if always run at 12 sth carbon will build quicker also waste of fuel
Every engine is different. N/A mine liked 12.5-12.7. Now I’m supercharged. So, 11-11.5 is my goal.
is it possible to get pops from using this tuner?
Yes, but the tune is whacked. I have only seen it done on other cars though. You can actually get pops on this car with the right exhaust combo due to the cam overlap. When my exhaust was insanely loud I could get a pretty loud few pops after creating back pressure in M mode, then tapping the throttle to go again. I can still do this now, it’s just not as loud. So the answer is yes, but I haven’t done it because I don’t want to drive around with that tune in place.
does this work for the 2uz/3uz also?
Yes. Installation will differ slightly, but same concept.
How hard is the install? I got an 04 is300
Did you watch the video?
@@ForwardMomentum I did, I'm just not the most mechanically inclined lol
It’s hard for me to answer for you. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most difficult, I’d rate this a 5. Requires more thinking than mechanical ability. You got this!
@@ForwardMomentum Thanks, I cant wait to see more from this channel! I'll attempt it myself
Could this be done on a gs 300
Of course. You have to follow the wiring diagram for your engine is all.
Is that a Pilot in the garage next to your GS?
Good eye! It has intake too! LOL
how will this work on a gs300?
I’m not sure how the I6 will respond to a tune. Give it a shot! ;)
Definitely want to see a dyno vid to see some real numbers. Not sure I want to modify mine unless I can get at least 25+ whp gain with bolt ons and tune for reasonable $$. My 99 gs4 has been wasting away in my driveway for a year, because I refuse to pay an arm and a leg to have the starter replaced and I haven't had time to do it myself. What a stupid fucking spot to put it. Other than that its been a solid car. Also owned a 98 gs300.
As soon as this Corona thing blows over and the weather gets really warm I want to dyno it.
Doing the starter isn't that bad. At least you can tackle other things like the manifold gaskets and tidy up other things while back there.
new sub n owner of a gs4 too
You're all motor. Could probably lean it to about a 13.0
maybe even a 13.2-13.3
Thank you for your comment. I will consider it.
I vote 13.1
4WD ADDICT it’s weird, this car seems to pull harder at 12.5-12.8.
Do you know anything about tuning the 2jzge?
Apexi link ?????
Here you go: apexi-usa.com/electronics
12.5-12.8 is way to rich for any na car
Nope. Each car is different. This AFR yielded the most midrange power on my 1UZ. Your settings and results may vary, but there isn’t one hard and fast rule.
I have GS300
Forward Your car better then mines lol
JayLifel the GS is a great platform. At least you can easily Aristo TT swap yours! I can’t!
Forward Momentum I didn’t know I can
JayLifel yep!
I gotta get my manual shift working.....my "M" just blinks. I miss the AFC/wideband days in my boosted honda
First? haha
