Maria Parkinson is the talented songwriter behind the lyrics. The song was first published in Songs of the Spirit in 1978, and there are suggestions that it may have been published in 1975 as well, although this hasn't been confirmed.
In 1982, the song gained prominence when it was performed during Pope John Paul II's visit to Liverpool Cathedral. Since then, it has been widely embraced and sung during pilgrimages to sacred places like Lourdes.
