- Starting from the entrance we walk the length of the Izumo grounds, one of Japan's most significant and oldest shrines. It's cultural value gives it my "Super Shrine" mark and a must-visit place on any trip to this area of Japan.
Brings back many wonderful memories of a trip my wife and I took in April, five years ago! We visited Hiroshima and Miyajima, then went up through the central mountains, Tsuwano, then up the coast to Izumo Taisha and Matsue. The Sea of Japan coastline was really beautiful We even stayed in a coastal town near Hamada called Yunotsu. From what Japanese people were telling us, Shimane Prefecture is the "inaka no inaka" , the real boonies, the heartland of old Japan. Good luck on your trip, and thanks for your videos!
My wife is from Izumo and I loved it here! Really excited to go back in late July to see her family again!
Japan is such a beautiful country i really do hope i'll get there someday.
I'm absolutely loving the subtle, peaceful vibe of these type of videos, nothing flashy nothing added, just Japan how it is. Loving the hitch-hiking,take care on the road!
I always wonder watching your live hitchhiking streams, if someone like me would get the same luck!!
It is so great to see such love and trust in a country!
I love the charming look of the stores. That is what I would like to see if I visit Japan.
I went to "Izumo Taisya" shrine about 30 years ago.
This shrine is popular among Japanese young people because it is known as the god of marriage.
After visiting there, I went to several hot spring areas, one of them is Misasa Spa, around this area, Sanin area.
One of typical foods is crab called "Matubagani" and it's very delicious.
You are such an amazing person, John. Sincerely, just wonderful. I consider myself so fortunate to have found your channel, and for having the opportunity to follow along with you on your journey. Every place has been so unique and special, with unbelievable beauty that can be almost breathtaking.
I was raised a Catholic, but wouldn't consider myself really practicing anymore. I'm more spiritual than anything, but there is something about being in a place like that, such holy and sacred grounds, that no matter what your beliefs and views, you are just drawn to something higher than yourself. You want to respect the shrine, because you can feel that it has earned your respect. ❤🙏 🙏❤
I agree with what you said.
+Elijah Thompson Thank you so much. :-)
That is a very beautiful city.
You're so lucky you get to do stuff that so many people dream about going everywhere especially going to Japan you are so lucky I wish I could live in Japan Japan is so beautiful I love Japan and there people of Japan are awesome

My friends and I were just in Japan last week. I was hoping to actually meet you but I believe you were on this current project. I totally get why you're passionate about Japan. I went for the "things". I left with a love for the caring and warm people!
Can someone answer my question. How is this guy soooo entertaining??
Because he's good, honest, sincere and funny. Plus he is extremely informed & knowledgeable. It's extremely rare, especially on YT, and it shines through.
Plastic Love ! Mariya Takeuchi's home apppears at 2:05 , 2:41 .
The fact that queen of city pop🌃 was born in front of the Japan's ancient super shrine⛩ moves me .
"The Kagura-den features the largest Shimenawa (sacred straw rope) in Japan; it is 13.5 meters long and weighs around 5 tonnes. The rope is one of the most easily recognized and distinctive features of Izumo-Taisha."
What a lovely little town. I very much like how it embraces nature by using earthy colors and having classic Japanese architecture. Whenever I decide to visit, I'd really like to visit smaller towns like this one.
Thank you again for the opportunity to travel Japan with you! I'm very grateful to see and enjoy your personality and the very rare beauty of the country. Good luck and blessings to you. By following you on your journey I have a much better appreciation for Japan and its people!
WOW that place is absolutely gorgeous. I love the how organic and earthy everything looks, like you were pointing out about the stores in the town. One day i'll hopefully make it to Japan, and Izumotaisha will definitely be a place I want to visit. It doesnt look tourist-y either.
Off topic (a little bit) but still : Absolutely loved the "new/old" building with the Starbucks @4:55 :-)
Great video as ALWAYS John.
Thomas
19:30 That's Japan for you. Especially in a more rural area, I guess. You can be really trusting with just leaving your stuff and know nobody's gonna touch it.
The United States used to be that way, at least in rural areas. Not any more.
The shops look super inviting. Thanks for the walk thru!
We respect 🙏 you John because you show respect. Also because you have a great sense of humour and you can laugh at yourself. 😊
izumo is going on my list of places to go for sure
I love your live walkthrough content. Thank you.
Such a beautiful place! So peaceful.
Greetings from Brazil! Love your videos. What a wonderful city and spetacular shrine!
You're making me want to visit South Japan. I'm going to Hokkaido, and have been to the centre of Japan, but not the south. Definitely have to cover that region one day.
you are super awesome!!! little eatery shops look great!! i feel like i'm there, thank you for posting :) but i wish i can eat those foods!!
Japan is lucky country to have such an ambassador as you are, John! You are great guy! :)
19:50 - In my country, if you left your stuff like that on the street... you cannot expect to find it in there upon return
Awesome experience; thank you for sharing these special moments with me/us. That was very cool to watch.
John, this is SO real. Unexpectedly candid and real! Way to trailblaze, man!!
He's the best!
Oh, thank you very much for sharing thid video! I've been in this place few years ago while visiting Japan as tourist.
Its so nice to remember it all again, during this shaky pandemic and unstable politics time!
Your bravery for hitchhiking is amazing!!!!
Hahah... the word John was searching for was "traditional" or "historical" look. :P
This is one of the things I absolutely loved about my trip on Japan... we've been to Akihabara, Shinjuku, Harajuku among other districts in Tokyo - packed and modern places, brands, stores, huge LCD displays and whatnot - and then we went to Nikko Toshogu, visited onsens, temple complexes and smaller towns... how the train stations changes from capitals to less populated areas.
It's all pretty awesome. The contrast between modernity and traditional/historical places is awe inspiring, and impressive how they keep it relatively well separated.
Sometimes you get smaller temples that look like they belong to a scene a thousand years ago somehow burried in the middle of a modern neighborhood.
The opposite is also true. Looking from the shinkansen, there were places completely empty with rice fields, mountains in the back, dirt roads in between... but right there in the middle of it all.... vending machines! xD
It's not only in Izumo that you'll find that look and level of preservation, we've been to smaller towns up in Fukushima that had a similar look to it.
Can't remember the name of this really impressive temple/shrine complex we went with tall trees and this really small gift shop in the middle of it all, traditional style. It's like, you walk around dragging your chin on the ground along with you.
There weren't many tourists that day, it was cold and raining a bit, we just entered the gift shop that had this heater in the middle of it, just us, and a couple of the store owners/caretakers... what an experience.
And there are these places where you get totally confused about how clean and well preserved they are, yet you see no one out there (out of season)... it's a bit haunting. xD Not a peep around, just nature sounds, no one shouting, no one speaking on the phone, no screen haze and such. It transports you to the past and you feel like you are in some other time.
All this added to the sense of security, there's this sense of freedom beyond any comparison.
Sorry, my nostalgia is killing me. xD
Looks like some good roads to skate in those mountains

Thanks for sharing John! I have been enjoying stopping by every day or so and seeing where you are next. and in many ways where "we" are going. Be safe out there my good man. I greatly love Shinto it is a spirituality (in essence) that I wish much more of the western world would grow towards and embrace. Even if just philosophically. Again, loving the content! Stay Safe!

John do you use a gimbal? the video is pretty stable when you're walking
How do you stay clean? How do you do things like showering?
22:59 You are probably some shade of agnostic. So am I :-)
