If I could have the ability to do anything or to become anyone of my choice before I die, I would certainly choose to be Steven Isserlis and play this great piece. My hat off to him.
A fiery and awe-inspiring performance with extraordinary precision technique to further augment the passion and excitement of Haydn's composition! Most inspiring, and I could listen to this performance endlessly.
TheRuinManiac He may sound like he is out of tune because Norway tunes at A=442, whereas we tune at A=440. He is actually playing with very good intonation, but some people may not hear it that way because of the tuning pitch.

So happy the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra concert today was rained out at intermission , even tho I just got there because I am now listening to all of the music I missed and have a resurfacing love of classical music😊
My favourite cello concerto by miles, performed by my favourite cellist. It is wonderful to watch Steven Isserlis playing. It never fails to move to tears of joy. I would have loved to know Josef Haydn too; his humanity, warmth and humour are so perfectly expressed in his music.
Speechless!!!! Stunning! No words! Who is the great MASTER? F. J. Haydn ausser dieser Welt!!! Incredible, unglaublich!!! Und Mozart? und Beethoven?.... Was Kann ich sagen?...
Third Lockdown due to Covid19. The streetlights are still lit despite it being mid-morning - where is the sun - it seems so dark. The streets are virtually empty and very quiet. But, now I can almost (I'm waiting for a knee replacement) skip round my empty flat where I live alone. A big smile to start the day :) KBO.
9 months later still no knee replacement. No hospital beds due to anti vaxxers etc. but the crystal hanging from my curtain pole is making hundreds of tiny rainbows upon my walls. The idiot which is Boris, having his strings pulled by wife no:?? is making my old flat unsellable with his insulation policies, but ****** the appalling man on with the MUSIC......
Alice Jeon are you bragging that you are learning this when you’re nine? Jk that’s awesome that you’re doing it at 9. It really is a fun piece. Have fun playing it!
Steven holds an unchallenged position as an interpreter of Haydn And he is a great Alchemist of the cello embodying the musical aesthetics of Haydn. Of course This orchestra's splendor of words can not attach it
I watched him play this at his concert tonight, and it was phenomenal, absolutely beautiful. I was speechless after his performance, and his hair/facial expressions are to die for, they're so expressive and add so much to the performance! Steven Isserlis is truly a wonderful cellist
there are many great cellist in this world, but only two are real artist, only two!! they are same carzy but in differenz way, they have both inhuman bow technique that nobody can imitate;they are same extremly and with same hairstyle, their name is Mischa Maisky and Steven Isserlis,~~~
As fine as the playing is, I don't like that the wind parts are being played by extra string players. The color is missing. And the associate principal cellist (one of the "wind players") is turning pages about every 20 measures. Odd.
@@alicejeon45 You're still young, so your misinterpretation of the comment is understandable. Let me clarify: it would be "kinda mean" if the comment you had responded to criticized his playing; which is not the case at all. They were making the justifiable observation that the soloist's cello is merely being overtaken by the rest of the orchestra; nowhere did they "blame" or "criticize" the soloist himself. If that was the case, I'm sure they would've said it directly. Here's an example of a truly "mean" comment: "No wonder they chose to play this arrangement without the traditional woodwind section, or the French Horns included - - The man struggles to make any impression that he is, in fact, the soloist. Guess he needed all the help he could get, because if the camera wasn't focused primarily on him, I'd be struggling; as his fingers are doing a lot of work for barely any sound." You see the difference? Naturally, my example of a truly mean comment is not how I feel at all; I am just providing some contrast. 🙂 Take care, and keep practicing! 👍🏻
Not a very constructive comment but it is so anoying to me when musicians make a point not to look at what they're doing. It's not that hard and can you imagine a pianist looking at the crowd or at the ceiling for a whole piece? I'm ok with gimmicks and flashy things if it's in the music but this annoys me.
From what I've heard him say in some of his masterclasses, he finds it's far easier to make an effective performance if you aren't locked into your cello the entire time. Not to mention that his hair would get stuck under his fingers if he looked down :)
His bow technique is just amazing...
Matteo I know right, it is so effortless.
His intonation is terrible and has sloppy articulations on his 16th notes in every music he plays

I cannot count how many times I have listened to this. Such joy. I always feel good after hearing this performance.
And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is what is meant by the word: 'virtuosity'!
Isserlis plays with such joy and love! His music makes my day! I would love to hear him in person.
can't stop watching this. Isserlis makes the term "performing artist" actually make sense to me
The orchestra met his vision - fantastic playing on everyone's part! I love it!
Die beste Version ever. Ich liebe den Spirit dieses Orchesters. Der Solist ist sensationell ❤. Diese Spielfreude ohne Selbstverliebtheit😊

Very true. For me not a day goes by without listening to this piece over ten times.
The bow floating gently on the string at 2:03 for that sustained high D .... but it's so powerful.
Omg you can just see the wheels turning in his head, and he smiles, its wonderful
Absolutely STUNNING. I am speechless. The finger work, the intensity, my goodness! I leapt out of my chair at the end!
Wow...That was outstanding. I was unaware of this mans talents. Lit the room ablaze!
Still listening endlessly to this brilliant performance which never fails to brighten even the most downtrodden of days. Thank you.
Incroyable il est tellement talentueux ! On a l’impression que c’est si facile ! Quel virtuose !!!!
Beautiful. What beautiful work. Haydn is so undervalued. Some call him square. I think the opposite. Thank you NCO for this work.
Amazing! can feel his finger dancing on the strings of heart.
Some may think it's sloppy, but it is not. There is so much behind his playing.

Some of his notes are out of tune but his amazing sound quality makes up for it!!!
A better musician than cellist. Cleaner is more to my taste but he understands what really matters to the audience
I think this is quite a good comment, and perhaps sums up many of the other (contentious!) comments and discussions...
What an elegance, humour, and such a creativity! LOVE U, Steven Isserlis!

The cellist steals the show hands down. Bravo.

OMG! A wrong note in a live performance! Somebody phone Haydn! BTW- not out of tune; they tune sharp and eat lutefisk in Norway- to each his own.
La justesse est parfois assez limite...J'en ai heureusement une bien meilleure version !! Quand ca peut etre excellent, ca rend exigeant...😅

The cello definitely needs help to shine amidst the brightness of the violins. Even with his own mike, his sound is subdued.
