I'm from Gdansk. I like how they introduce it like this cute little port town. First of all not a town but one of the biggest cities in Poland. Also definitely a gem but not necessarily hidden.

Nice video, though it needs a few comments. First, the architecture is overwhelmingly Polish. As you might know, during the WW2 the city had been completely destroyed. 85% of all buildings in the historic center had been turned into ruins that were beyond any restoration. That's why after the war, the Polish authorities decided to knock them down completely and erect buildings that were to resemble the ones that existed in the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries when Gdansk had been the richest city in Poland. Such iconic landmarks as the Green Gate, Artus Court or the statue of Neptune are the finest examples of the Polish architecture of that time. After the war, the authorities even decided to deliberately eliminate any traces of German influence that appeared when Poland lost its independence at the end of the XVIII century. Some buildings that were erected by Germans at that time like famous Danziger Hof Hotel have not been rebuilt at all. So saying that these "beautiful colored buildings are completely un-Polish in architecture" is misleading. Though it's true that, as in the case of every port city in Europe, Gdansk has also been influenced through ages by different styles and trends typical for many other port cities, particularly the Hanseatic ones. And obviously, needless to say, that all these "beautiful little houses that have the shape of the traditional ones but are actually quite modern" have been built just recently by Poles and designed by Polish architects.
Secondly, Gdansk is not so small city. It has a population of roughly 582K which is almost exactly the same as Copenhagen (583K) and just slightly smaller than Oslo (648K). Apart from that, it's a nice video. Good luck and many more nice surprises in Poland :)

Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot is the Tri-City. Gdańsk is over 1000 years old. Gdynia was built in the first half of the 20th century. This is a typical port city. Sopot is a typical seaside resort with the longest wooden pier in Europe and sandy beaches. In Gdańsk there is also an interactive Museum of the Second World War. A cruise ship can be visited by Westerplatte. It was there that II W.W.

    • @NaickKim

  • @atka1144

I'm from Poland and I was on a pirate ship to Westerplatte and back! It's an incredible adventure. You can visit everything from the ship: the whole port, shipyards, Wisłoujście fortress and additionally, if someone does not have time to visit Westerplatte and come back later, he may not get off and return immediately by the same ship. And Westerplatte can also be visited from the deck of the ship, because the monument to the defenders of Westerplatte can be seen when we are sailing. A live guide in Polish, English and German tells the whole cruise, and on the way back there was live shanties music! Such pirate music makes the cruise very pleasant. Additionally, you can eat and drink something, because there is a bar and restaurant on the Deck. Honestly, I highly recommend crayfish cruise, because a very large part of historic Gdansk can be visited during one cruise. 😊

Not just the biggest brick church in the world. It's also one of very few to have crystal vaults. In your clip you got one of them for a second maybe, on the left of the cadre showing the 'ceiling'. Well, the special thing about crystal vaults is that today nobody knows for sure how they were built. I think it would be an interesting thing to note and show here. They are very sophisticated and look like of some fairy tale castle. When in church - especially in gothic ones - do always look up, and not just to verify if they were crooked (they all were). You may find what you see up there more interesting than what you can see around. Cheers

Naick & Kim well, 01:00 straight. The vaults on the left, not those in the central nave (they have some ornaments on them but it’s no big deal from construction perspective). Put a pillow on your desk to protect your jaw before you look left :). Nobody would be able to build it today of bricks and stones. The way I see it is that those ornamented ones are a post-war restoration and are only mimicking the lost crystal ones. Which explains the whole idea of how mysterious the crystal vaults are.

Gdansk is a major Polish and European city, with a 1 million population. What you seem to mix up is assuming the OLD Town historical center is the whole city.
It it beautiful (my former city), deserves at least a few days, with side trips to Sopot resort, Gdynia, and Malbork - the fmr capital of the Teutonic Knights, with the
awesome biggest in the world brick castle complex, from the 13-15th centuries.
Yes, Gdansk looks like Copenhagen, since these are historical hanseatic cities, as most of the major North European port-cities in 13-16th centuries in Denmark,
Germany, Netherlands, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Sweden, Norway, etc - ALL of them look amazingly very much alike, and often due to the common/similar laws they were
    ruled by during these centuries.
Example: the width of the even most posh residences was a result of how many windows (glassed!) could fit in - and the window TAX regulated that.
Antwerpen in your country (Belgium) was also one of these cities.
Doughnuts in Poland are superior to made anywhere else, as the yeast dough is much lighter, often due to the addition of pure vodka - you don't feel the taste, but the
dough contains much more AIR, gets fluffy, moist and light, does not absorb as much fat during frying/baking.

My computer guru will check it out ASAP and we'll file the report w/google if needed. For NOW I have to say it here, hope you'll see it.
Re: Transsiberian: You've had an only sane idea to take (&pay) for the 2nd class. Should you take the 3rd, you'd still have that smell all over you and your stuff. I was laughing as NOTHING has changed in 40+ yrs ! Maybe sheets little whiter. The SAME tea-glass holders (stakhanchiki) ! The SAMOVAR used to be the REAL samovar like in Dr Zhivago movie. The food you could buy from "babushkas" on the platforms, was MUCH better. Everybody gave you smthg to eat, since you NEVER go on this trip w/out bags of your own food. Avoid train food in all those countries - you cannot get sick. I saw today that you take 3rd class to Ulan-Ude -- should be OK, it's "only" 7 hrs.
Baikal - beautiful, HUGE, same as before, looks cleaned up a tiny bit, the lake and the surroundings. The boats were much worse then !

    Small port?
The Tri-City has 750,000 inhabitants - how many cities are larger in the Baltic Sea? St. Petersburg, Stockholm and ...?
Gdańsk is not Polish or whose?
Have not Poles lived here from the beginning?
Who lived here and what kind of kings prevailed in this area?
    Danes?
An interesting cultural rasism, arrogance or ignorance (of racial purge of architecture)?
Similar architecture of the northern renaissance and neohansatic can be found in other Polish cities in Pomerania, and even examples in the south of the country.
I wonder how many Polish cities You know and their history? .
Is Krakow a Polish city and Petersburg - a Russian one - after all, there were also foreign influences there?
What cities are: Lvov, Vinius, Prague, Odessa, Boston, and Granada?
Is Warsaw, Zamość, isn't Polish, because the architects came here from Italy?
Some people compare the architecture of the Old Town in Wroclaw to the Dutch one.
Do similar post-Hanseatic cities: Amsterdam, Bruges, Lubeck, Rostock, Stralsund, Hamburg, Stockholm, London, Riga, Tallinn,
Szczecin, Kołobrzeg, Elbląg, Klaipeda - they are not: Dutch, English, German, Swedish, Latvian, Lithuanian or Polish?
    Only whose?
And finally, such a remark: old Gdansk was almost 100% destroyed. What you observe are artificial mock-ups.
Such Polish models as in Warsaw and Wrocław!
Yes,..! Therefore, you can call it a non-Polish syndrome - the result of "good German work" - "war vandalism"!
Once an interesting humorous movie was published, about an American tourist - how an idiot is exploring the world ... - very instructive ...

The little port town? With 600.000 people living there?
And just a word about the medieval cathedrals: their main axes are always broken. It's not a bug, it 's a feature. :) It's so called "an axis deviation". The nave and presbytery angle is about 4 degrees. There's a theological explanation of this: Jesus' head on the cross is always leaning.

    • @NaickKim
      @NaickKim  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes you're right. The historic city center is quite compact so we didn't realise until later that it's quite big!
Cool, thanks about the explanation, we had no clue about that. Can you be our guide next time, haha :)

@@NaickKim Actually I don't live in Gdańsk, but in my little (this time correctly, only 1/10 of Gdańsk population) town there's also a a thousand years old medieveal cathedral and it's of course also "broken".
And yes, there were pirates on the Baltic Sea! The Polish pirates/corsairs were fighting with The Teutonic Knights Fleet since the 15th century.
BTW I meet quite a lot of people from Belgium in the Tatra Mountains. Last time the four pretty girls (with a broken car) in Dolina Pięciu Stawów (The Valley of Five Lakes).bit.ly/2Y63anL
