      Didn't see her as being disrespectful, more that dad was disrespectful about size of patio doors on plan. The debt was hers, not parents, and part of the overrun was due to foundation changes. How much of this was for added drama for filming? If they didn't get along well, they would have a duplex.

      I get the door opening. That had been agreed to beforehand. Still, it behooved the daughter to respond with respect while explaining the better design decision - one that her Dad should not have unilaterally changed. In terms of the kitchen, I would have immediately endorsed finding the best deals (which they ultimately did in any case) and thanking the parents for their supportive role. Commenting about growing up with crap kitchens was a rude retort. I wish them all the luck living together. I think the bf will get on fine with her parents. The other part of the equation remains to be seen. (of course with reality TV shows it’s always hard to tell what has been staged, but I got the feeling that this was the real deal.)
      I don’t really get the shiny white cabinets that seem to be all the rage when these videos were shot. They seem pretty glaring and uninviting to me. Is that style a British thing? My nearly 200 yr old house - in the states - had basic 1950s wood cabinets covered with adhesive paper. I stripped and painted them, changed the countertops to thick pine, and tiled in a backsplash myself. I like the look and price just fine. And they match the character of the house. The kitchen makeover cost 2 gallons of paint, some basic carpentry on the work surfaces, the subway tile left over from my bathroom project, and some sweat equity.

      @@serenakoleno9338 agreed. So many are getting this wrong saying the parents "bought" her the house. The parents didn't buy the house, they only paid for the reno (Budgeting 120K that became 13K). The kids hold the 320K mortgage. This was a joint venture where all four have finances invested in it. For those claiming the dad wasn't being disrespectful... Yeah, it is disrespectful to change something on your own when all who is contributing financially to it already agreed and decided on something else. It is disrespectful to brush off someone explaining the change you made, while you claim no change was made. We just got to see a small glimpse in the frustration that is a reno. Many are blowing this way out of proportion.

      At the end she said "At the age of 27, I think thanks to my parents, we've achieved something a lot people will never achieve, so we're really really thankful."
      She and her fiancee didn't achieve anything. In the beginning she also said her dad helped them buy the house. So in the end, how much money did she and her fiancee end up spending? Her parents bought the house, paid for the renovations, oversaw the renovations and went into debt to finish the renovation. Her parents achieved the 115 000 equity, they just moved in with them.

(I married into one and it can be a shock) but in the end they listened to each other. They put in the big doors and spent under budget on the kitchen. ALSO, the children paid for the house and the parents paid for the extension. I am not saying that there weren’t stressful moments, but they did all seem to get what they want. It was a struggle but because of the development and the increase in property value our Loan to Value decreased, which meant we had more equity and therefore received a lower interest rate, our mortgage actual went down by around £400.00 per month and we were paying more capital off then before the build (WIN, WIN). We brought the property in 2012 for £250,000 and sold it for £630,000 in 2021 during the height of Covid, I believe we sold at the top of the market, we then moved into a rented property before we found another under valued home were we could develop from my newly acquired development skills (Thanks Sarah) and add more value. So we done incredibly well and are extermly grateful that we were cast for the show. We are currently in the middle of another project as we look to add more value to our home and create the best possible environment to raise our children. Much Love - Ben x

    I do think Helena was disrespectful to her father, but I would have been upset too. The plans that they had all agreed on showed a 4 meter opening for doors and he had it built for a 2 meter opening. Then, he said that the decisions were between him and the builder. Hmmm. I don't think it works well for two generations to live together. That's why the Bible says that a man is to leave his father and mother and cling to his wife.

    • @yvonnepalmquist8676
      @yvonnepalmquist8676 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it's not unusual that a UK home will have no front yard, and just a "driveway." The real 'yard' in the UK are the backyard "gardens." While it may be uncomfortable, even in the US it's not unusual to see all gravel driveways. Stepping stones are always nice to have though ;)

      Pat2296. Don't forget it's a small country. Land is expensive. People cover over their normal gardens at the front to get their cars off the narrowish roads. Especially as they are losing their garages to make the houses bigger. Outdoor family life is enjoyed in the back garden though.

    The custom of marrying off one's daughter with the dowry of a house is unfair to everyone involved. The parents shouldn't have that financial responsibility; the daughter shouldn't have to fight to get the home she wants; and the son-in-law shouldn't have to play second fiddle to his wife's family. Tradition is nice; equality is better.
