I've been an advocate of shooting on an iphone since I had my 7 plus and I'm still going. I recently shot my first short on the 13 and 15 Pro Max that I'm currently editing. It's amazing, the technology. I can call the DMV and then say, "Action" with the same device and most people, given great lighting and sound and motion, would never know that it wasn't shot on a cinema or mirrorless camera.
Yay! And yes! I shot my first video of musicians with iPhone SE original on a Freefly phone gimbal. Immediately addicted. The phones are a miracle, and they're just getting better; the 16 mics are a VERY welcome upgrade. It's the feeling of the film and audio that counts.
Depends on what you shoot. Try using an iphone for weddings, event coverage, news. Just did an event coverage recently with iPhone just to test if it was possible. Yes, but I will never do that again.
@@teohyc I just did an event with the iPhone 15 as last-resort-backup camera amongst 3 other cameras, and it shocked me - I was using it for basic colour reference and (sometimes) dynamic range reference, once I got home. A bit less detail on the 0.5x but then a ton of people will be watching the 720p result so honestly … I'm wondering seriously now. Every other camera needed manual tweaking and after hours in prep and post, they could equal or surpass what the iPhone did in just automatic. Then the next-least camera failed on the final 10% and it will be relegated to last-resort-backup next time. I think in a year I'll be using TWO iPhones out of the four, and it won't be long until all of them except for a BlackMagic (e.g. 12K or 8K120) will be the current and previous generation of iPhone Pro. It's just more reliable and more consistent.

That last statement of a 14 pro max owner enjoying the bump is accurate. I picked my 16 pro max up on launch day and have really been enjoying the camera bump and the special audio features. Oh, and it’s almost an ounce lighter in the pocket and that helps for sure.
Upgraded to a 16 Pro Max from a 12 Pro Max. I upgraded just because, and to experience Apple Intelligence when it arrives. My old phone was fine for everything I used it for. The camera features are very nice, gaming is butter smooth at max quality settings, and the phone seems faster. I also like the quality of recording at 4K120 Dolby Vision. I don’t think it was worth paying $1300 out of pocket for the base model when my 12 Pro Max worked fine. This was a luxury indulgence more than anything. It’s a good experience overall.
Went from the iPhone 13 to the 16 pro and I’m loving it so far. I mainly did it to get a more future proof device to hold on to for a long time and so far I’m loving the advanced camera system and all the other small features and stuff.
I don’t personally see the 16 Pro as an upgrade if one owns the 15 Pro. I see it more for people like me who currently own the 13 Pro or earlier. I’ve been shooting video for my ranch and farm brokerage for 15 years, starting with a Nikon D90 and then Canon 5D. Have used Lumix M 4/3 cameras for the past 10 years and wouldn’t think about shooting on an iPhone for my marketing videos. Gh7, G9II are relative small cameras with beautiful glass and small size. iPhones obviously work for TH-cam content but too limiting for what I do. YMMV of course.
Even for me it’s a tough sale. I have the 14 Pro, my only really enticing thing is the iPhone I have is the only lightning cable device I still have and that is just frustrating. Everything else I have is USB C.
I preordered the iPhone 16 pro 1TB in Natural Titanium. I can't wait for it to come in! I used to always get the max but this year i wanted the pro instead because i do have small hands, cases are a little cheaper compared to the max and apparently this year's pro size for the iPhone is bigger than previous models which is nice! Soooo excited!!
I‘ve had the 16 Pro since launch day and currently on vacation in the Italian Alps. I haven‘t found a reason yet to use the new camera button regularly. For me it is much faster to open the Camera App just touching the screen twice, than having to press the camera hutton twice to actually wake up the phone and then start the camera. It‘s actually quicker and more precise, making changes to the camera settings using the screen rather than the button. The only use case so far is, when the phone is in an awkward position, where I can‘t see the screen (low angle macros) to actually have a physical button. But the Volume up button did the same thing already.
Pro res is the greatest thing that happen to iPhones. I don't even use other cameras anymore. I travel a lot. I don't need to cary heavy cameras anymore. All I take is my iPhone and DJI action cameras. That's it. I travel to some dangerous places sometime. Having professional looking cameras with me is like asking for trouble. I made my iPhone to look like crap so thieves won't even bother to steal it.
the most spectacular video image from a phone right now is the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. A beautiful natural image when shooting Raw with the motioncam app. It completely blows the prores log out of the water. Even a bit of back ground blur with the 1 inch sensor, and a sunstar producing aperture on the lens. I returned my iphone. I actually found out about motioncam through this channel, will you do a follow up some day?
I can believe that. Been trying to get my hands on a newer android phone to do an update video! I still only have my pixel 6 pro which isn’t a fair comparison anymore hah. Would love to try the Xiaomi
maybe its just me, but Sony Xperia shutter button had one of the perfect placements for shooting in landscape and I agree wholeheartedly cameras and phones have become so good, its about making it work for you
We have the camera button since always, Volumen control IS the shutter. And is on the right position. We didn't need the camera control. BUT I hope I can scroll on safari, instagram with the same gesture.
I like the new camera button-I use the action button for ChatGPT and the camera button on the lock screen to replace the silence button. The new button has been handy for launching the camera quickly. At first, the new button felt a bit finicky to control, but after a few hours, it became easier to use. Still, the jury’s out on whether I like the camera control the new button offers, overall an extra button is welcomed.
When can we expect the new iPhone Filmmaking Guide 2.0 to be available? If I purchase the current version, will I be granted access to the new one when it's released?
Hey! I’m working on updating everything now. Will be uploaded over the next couple weeks! Yes it won’t be separate it’ll be just updated from the current verison
Because I have the 15 Pro Max, BeastCage, & DOF III, I’m good for now and probably a few more years. I rather buy new lenses, add lights, stands and quality mics that can be used with other cameras over chasing technology with every new Apple release.
Just came from Jonathan's vid. Thanks for the pizza box reveal! Older phone, so - for me - this is the major upgrade others had with the 15. Hopefully, the Lexar hub and drive arrive quickly to use with it. Appreciate your vids.
I get what you saying about the camera control button being redundant because there are other buttom like the action buttons and the camera button you can press in the bottom right of your phone . But because the camera controls button is there now it frees up the action button for a different use and with the iOS 18 update it frees up that camera button on the screen for something else now so the camera control allows you to use the action button and the on screen button for something else without having to compromise loosing functionality of the action button
I keep seeing people complain about the camera button, I really like it, the controls are great and I always used the vol slider, so I'm used to using a button for shutter. Once they get half press to focus that will be great.
I certainly hope I grow to love it and will happily change my opinion on it! I don’t enjoy disliking new features but I also always want to be honest about my opinion. So glad you’re loving it though!
I currently think the camera button is the iPhone version of the Bixby button. So far, I haven’t found a use case, where I couldn’t be quicker and more precise using the screen controls.
The quality of your videos is always impressive! I love the rich feel and your lighting! I really like the content of this one because I am a firm believer that these phones can (and will) replace DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras! I look forward to carrying less equipment! Now if they could master lighting and sound products!
Without a doubt, the development of iPhone’s video/audio pipeline has substantially altered the filmmaker’s toolkit for the better. Democratizing the world of motion pictures is one of the best stories of 21st century filmmaking. It’s time for you (yes YOU) to grab your iPhone and tell the stories only you can tell! 👏🏻
Regarding your just jump in the pool statement, I trusted the certification and jumped in a pool with my 13 pro - it completely killed it. So I don’t know about that and won’t do it again with my new model now
I've found myself using the 15 Pro in situations that favour the smaller sensor & form factor - easy access to wide shots (especially on a gimbal given how light phone gimbals are) where shallow DoF isn't expected or desired. Really handy for quick establishing shots without re-rigging my main camera or rebalancing gimbal etc. Also great for BTS shots etc and I gravitate to the 13mm and one of the shortcomings I have found is the 13mm just isn't quite where the 24mm is and it's pretty noticeable. I'll be curious to see some detailed comparisons of the old vs new 13mm sensor. If that is significant enough/close to the quality from the 24mm, between that and the audio improvements it may be enough to sway me. It's just a real shame they changed the 3X to a 5X. I found the 77mm to be much more of a sweet spot than 5X.
Suggestions as to how exactly best export content from FCP in Dolby Vision for TH-cam, so it doesn't take ages to process by them? I'm currently exporting as ProRes 422 HQ in 10-bits (from a Wide Gamut FCP library) just because it takes around 12 hours to get the HDR processed by YT. I tried h.265 and various other formats, but the former took 24 hours for viewers to get the HDR active. PS. This is for iPhone 15/16 Pro content.
for me, i got the 16 pro max. I'm right handed but i always hold my phone with my left hand. the capture button is in the perfect spot for my middle finger to click. but mostly just click to open and take a quick photo vertically. not gunna try and adjust anything. its very useful for taking quick dog picks :D but i tried a normal pro non max and it didn't fit in my hand for the button at all lol
I have a Samsung Note 10+ at the moment and when taking photos I use the down volume button, it looks like the camera button on the iPhone 16 is in the same position. Using the volume button on the Note 10 has never been a problem, so I guess it's going to be fine when I get the iPhone 16 Pro.
can you tell me please what mic did Johnathan plug into that iPhone is this the rode ntg? it looks like theres a usb c plugged inside which is awesome!!
I have a question for you please . So let’s say you have a 13 pro and then get 16 pro would that mean the pictures on instagram come out better with the 16 pro? Or would the differences be negligible?
I have setup on my 15 Pro to double tap the back of the phone to open the camera app. Google lens can be used already on any photo you take with the iPhone. PetaPixel did a 400% side by side with the 15 pro and 16 pro wide angle sensor and there was no noticeable difference in video between them. And Audio you can already upload into Adobe Enhance for cleaner audio. I guess a long winded way of saying, nothing here get's me excited to upgrade. I'll wait to see what next year brings.
As iphone user i like iphone camera, but for serious photo i still using my Dslr. I like using phone camera for simple photo but not serious. Flagship phone cameras are good.
I wish people were talking about the fact that the ultra wide camera on the pro and pro max is a downgrade when it comes to low light. It’s for a huge vignette and it’s noticeable worst compared got the 15 when the iso is bumped. F-Stopper and MKBHD talked about both those issues. There definitely there. I have the 16 pro. I see it. Did I miss something or did he bring this up in the video?
Great video, as always. I do wish that apple would give us a bigger sensor and a way of physically controlling aperture , instead of a new button. I think that this new button will get in the way of all the hand grips available in the market, so I want to see how brands will solve this problem. Also, I’m getting a bit fed up with the fact that I have to always be changing cases every time a new iPhone comes out. I spend a lot of money buying the beastcage, for example, and many other accessories that won’t be able to be used with the new iPhone 16 pro max. This is something that has to be addressed and people should be vocal about it.
About the only other cameras that impress me in this way are those 4K drone cameras … that just seem "unnecessarily good", though I'd argue that the kinds of places and situations these drones go to, everything is necessary. And I'm keeping one eye on BlackMagic Ursa Mini, just like I did with RED ONE all those years ago (20 years now?)
Why would you pick an iPhone over anything else no one is recording 120fps log videos. So what would bring to the table that for example an android phone cant do?
The ONLY improvements that matter to me are the camera and sensor. All the AI fluff and OS fluff and camera control......meh....just doesn't matter. The button placement looks bad too. Now.....once they match each lens/camera to the same quality of the main camera....then we'll be talking about something special. Until then...it's all just fluff. It's incredibly liberating to not have to futz around with all kinds of mirrorless/larger gear to get footage that look surprisingly good. And once they can get all 3 lenses to reach parity in quality......you won't even have to futz around with changing lenses or a big zoom. It'll be incredible. There will obviously always be a place for the high end gear. But man....so nice to finally have pro-res apple log available.
The size argument doesn't make sense until you started talking about the scenarios GoPro's usually cover The iPhone is totally the new crash cam. By far. Tripod talking head shot? Sure... but that one is a harder justification IMO with the limitations of the best camera forcing you to not see the screen and have other alternative methods to monitor your footage
I went to the Apple store today thinking I might buy a 16 Pro. However, the hype on the camera control button was a big disappointment - I found it fiddly, bad placement and it really didn’t seem advantageous over what the iPhone 15 Pro has. I didn’t buy a new phone as I didn’t like the iPhone Pro enough to outlay the money.
I get the rationale. I think Apple was looking at how popular “DSLR esque” photo grip accessories from freewell, Ulanzi, shiftcam and others have been getting and wanted to “take ownership” of that segment with their own eco system so it’s… kinda where the shutter button on a DSLR would be but I think it woulda be better moved lower toward the chin to achieve that.
I will say, every lens on my Iphone 13 pro shoots better low light photos than any of the newer models because of how fast my lenses are. The 48mp sensor, yes even though it's larger, cannot hold the light as much as this camera can without noise. My wide has a wider apperature at f1.5. My ultra wide has an f1.8 apperature. Unheard of in newer iphones. The low light capability of the Iphone 13 pro is astonishing for its $500-600 refurbished price tag. iphone 16 pro isn't worth double the price imo, i'll have to be waiting for quite some time as a consumer (not a content creator)
If you plan to shots stills, 500 mm lense is best. If you are planning to shoot video, you can't beat the iPhone. Enjoy your safari. It is an amazing experience
The camera control button feels like an afterthought for apple just to cramp a new feature to its newest phones. Pretty sure they’ll take it off in the next iPhone iteration.
Probably fine for TH-camrs to use just an iPhone, but I’m a paid professional. If I show up at my client shoot with just that I’ll never be called back! There’s an expectation when you’re being paid by a client or business that you have all the high end tools.
24hrs into owning the 16 Pro Max, I can see the advantages of the new button for photography, but for video, the button totally stinks. I have tried using it with the Apple Manufactured Silicone cover, plus on the phone with no cover, and no matter how gentle I am, that clicking sound gets baked into the video file. I don't have time to edit out the first and last milliseconds of each video file, so will continue to use the onscreen button, or traditional side buttons to record and end recording.
Impossible comparison to make unless you shoot Canon on a similar-sized sensor. I still find iPhone footage a bit weird/synthetic when it's professionally lit and graded. Kind of falls in the "uncanny valley." But I've shot small natural-light docs on the iPhone and they have their own look. As always, it's the low-light performance that crushes the iPhone. The image falls apart quickly as light levels drop.
This BUTTON is something i never felt like i need and i was doing just fine taking videos and photos without it. Now because i know i have it im trying to get used to it and to like it, but i honestly just cant. As u said im always reaching and im faster with my thumb switching settings on the screen except now i feel dumb cuz i know they put a new piece of hardware for me to use and i hate to use it. So many years of muscle memories and this button is not just a matter of getting used to , it literally makes many things slower than using the screen and there is no amount of getting used to that will make it otherwise. Its a 1 button that is designed to do many things depending on how long u press, how hard u press , single , doubly or swiping gestures for many things that u can access from screen with a single tap. Its only fast and good use is literally opening camera... even holding it to go from pictures to video is not faster cuz u can literally hold the on screen circle to do the same so i dunno its absolutely bad to me cause i want to use it , its new and ppl engineered that, but i just cant and i wont. I will repeat other reviewers, but i also like them think that this should double as a fingerprint sensor like " for many years apple users also want to have the possibility of fingerprint unlocking along with their face id so now we give you our fingerprint scanner which is special cuz its not just fingerprint, but does this and that and that... " Yesterday a friend of mine said " is this the new one let me see, whats new is it cool , whats that on the side " and i said its just a button to control the camera and it does not do anything u cant do without it. His face was like " what the actual fok " he couldnt believe they designed this and it cant do anything more unique that u cant without to excuse its existence and he was totally right.
60hz, no AOD is a non-starter. For those who have never tried another phone or platform, these are not pro features. You’ve just been made to believe they are.
The upgraded 48MP ultrawide is performing worse than the 15 Pro's 12MP ultrawide. In good light, I'm not seeing any more detail and in low light, I'm seeing less detail and more softness.
For standard recording it’ll be the same quality on both. 16 you gain bit better ultra wide, 4K 120, sound mixing features for better audio, capture button
@@initialfocus😮 so just go for the 16 pro 😅 I mean I already waited this long right or is it worth the savings and just use that on a cage and external ssd etc 😊
@@initialfocus I'm torn, its only $200 more Canadian so its not that much... but my carrier is giving me free AirPods Pro 2 so I'm not sure if I should take the savings or just go for the 16 pro max, it seems like the better deal especially with those studio mic
Ultra wide feels a bit better in video. Little less mushy. Besides that nothing quality wise has changed. You get 4K 120 because of the new SSDs and faster performance. I used both 15 pro and 16 pro in this video to show they are near identical
Have to do more testing and I haven’t shot many photos yet so that may be a bigger difference but in video I’d say it’s a nice little noticeable bump but not life changing.
Im a long time apple user across the board so this isnt brand hate but "gimmick" seems to the title of this model. Im still on an iPhone 11 pro and I have no desire to upgrade, but, my phone is starting to crap out so I think Im going to be forced into it. Im not one of those people that needs the wheel re-invented every model but it just seems like all the new features in this phone are either kinda pointless, worse and/or just more effort to use than the existing method. I can tell you now I'll never use that camera button and theres no way im memorizing it's labyrinth of menus when they're right there on the screen, easier to use. Sad to say but if I end up having to upgrade it'll feel like more of a downgrade in more than one way.
The Camera button feels like a blemish. It's a turn-off. AI should be taking over these functions. Instead of giving us AI, Apple is giving us more old-school buttons. SMH. Move forward, not backward.

yes but, the iphone 16 its not very cheap haha
Regarding your just jump in the pool statement, I trusted the certification and jumped in a pool with my 13 pro - it completely killed it. So I don’t know about that and won’t do it again with my new model now
What is the new audio features like for recording interviews?
can you break down the audio set up? even in a short form
Question is for me that 16 nonpro is a better deal than 15 pro(using blackmagic app) or not? switching from android
Depends if you want to shoot in LOG and Apple Proraw, non pro phones don’t have those features
Hey Michael can you tell the Black Magic team to fix the false colors and the histogram while shooting Apple Log footage
Is Camera Control just a gimmick and unnecessary complication on an iPhone?
Gimmick imo
Apple will never dare to use1inch sensors,if you wanted that you could have bought a Xioami,Vivo,or Oppo phone
Give us the LUT👀👀
I really expected a BM Camera app update for the launch today so we can use the camera control button with it and 120 FPS. :(
Control button support yeah is yet to come but you can shoot 120fps with the current version no problem 👍🏼
@@initialfocus Thank you
About the only other cameras that impress me in this way are those 4K drone cameras … that just seem "unnecessarily good", though I'd argue that the kinds of places and situations these drones go to, everything is necessary. And I'm keeping one eye on BlackMagic Ursa Mini, just like I did with RED ONE all those years ago (20 years now?)
Other than the lenses, and 4k 120fps, is there a difference with the cameras?
Was the audio for the video recorded from the regular 16? How does it sound without software tweaking?
Why would you pick an iPhone over anything else no one is recording 120fps log videos. So what would bring to the table that for example an android phone cant do?
i do with my homemade porn 😂
I mean if you wanted better sensors you wouldn't look at apple but instead at some of the chinese phones with 1" sensors like vivo
Nice video. How do you monitor the framing with another iPhone ? I’m not sure I understood
800th like from me, cheers!
So what is it what you don't get?
The size argument doesn't make sense until you started talking about the scenarios GoPro's usually cover
The iPhone is totally the new crash cam.
Gotta appreciate what u have
I get the rationale.
Hi can you review Sony Xperia Phone please
What case is that?
Where can I get the phantom LUT colour he mentioned ?!
Going on safari in November will the new 5x zoom be good enough? I guess we will find out. Still taking the cinema rig
If you plan to shots stills, 500 mm lense is best. If you are planning to shoot video, you can't beat the iPhone. Enjoy your safari. It is an amazing experience
Jon x Michael collab🥳
iPhone: Yes
iPhone 16: Maybe
iPhone 15: Yes
great video
I was expecting cinematic mode to be atleast 60 fps in 4k
The camera control button feels like an afterthought for apple just to cramp a new feature to its newest phones. Pretty sure they’ll take it off in the next iPhone iteration.
I love it and I think it will be with us for a long time. Plus the cutouts on the cases for them are sexy.
Probably fine for TH-camrs to use just an iPhone, but I’m a paid professional. If I show up at my client shoot with just that I’ll never be called back! There’s an expectation when you’re being paid by a client or business that you have all the high end tools.
Question: what camera was this video shot on?
Entire video is either iPhone 15 pro max or 16 pro
@@initialfocus cool! Maybe mention it in the video next time, it’s a big testament to the quality of these cameras!
Better than Canon - them's fighting words, haha!
Fr!!
Yesterday a friend of mine said " is this the new one let me see, whats new is it cool , whats that on the side " and i said its just a button to control the camera and it does not do anything u cant do without it.
His face was like " what the actual fok " he couldnt believe they designed this and it cant do anything more unique that u cant without to excuse its existence and he was totally right.
Also, I am going to be pissed if we have to wait a year for Tilta to come out with their main case for the 16 Pro/Max for the Khronos.
Really? For me the pictures from the 16 Pro ultrawide look much more detailed than from the 15 Pro Max. Haven’t tried lowlight so far.
So what’s the verdict 😮 am I upgrading my 12 pro max to the 16 pro max or saving money and getting the 15
Pro max 😮
For standard recording it’ll be the same quality on both. 16 you gain bit better ultra wide, 4K 120, sound mixing features for better audio, capture button
@@initialfocus😮 so just go for the 16 pro 😅 I mean I already waited this long right or is it worth the savings and just use that on a cage and external ssd etc 😊
@@initialfocus coming from 12 pro max so anything is an upgrade for me haha 🤣
@@initialfocus I'm torn, its only $200 more Canadian so its not that much... but my carrier is giving me free AirPods Pro 2 so I'm not sure if I should take the savings or just go for the 16 pro max, it seems like the better deal especially with those studio mic
that studio mic, is that worth the upgrade from the 15 pro max
Patrick said it was, worth more than the camera upgrade although I do notice the difference in ultra wide
Because I make a living with the iPhone... I'll be upgrading from the iPhone 15 Pro Max to the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
Why doesn't apple bring in a focus group of filmmakers like yourself to give ideas on what would work for their next phones.
Swipe to left to open camera.
how to recommend a phone in. 2024 with 60 Hz Display refresh rate??? And it costs 900 Bucks??? How????😮
That button makes it to be way too many goddamn buttons. Samsung already went this route and got sh1t for it so.... Ooofff... Not a fan.
You didn’t give us any information on whether the iPhone 16 Pro cameras are better than the iPhone 15 Pro cameras.
Ultra wide feels a bit better in video. Little less mushy. Besides that nothing quality wise has changed. You get 4K 120 because of the new SSDs and faster performance. I used both 15 pro and 16 pro in this video to show they are near identical
@@initialfocusThank you brother. The ultra wide was the only reason I was going to upgrade. I’ll wait till next iPhone.
Have to do more testing and I haven’t shot many photos yet so that may be a bigger difference but in video I’d say it’s a nice little noticeable bump but not life changing.
28 years later film was filmed on iPhone 15 pro
I don't get it either. I'm staying with ma 13pro
12 pro max so I went ahead and upgraded. My 12 is starting to lag some.
Going to feel like a big jump from 12 to 16! Congrats!
❤
This Video was shot in 2 hours solely on 16 iPhones and 1 Drone - th-cam.com/video/3_RB0tRI624/w-d-xo.html
Apple took away the home button just to bring different buttons that mean nothing to the actual phone experience
Put on gloves, and the camera button makes sense right away. If you only use the phone with your bare hands, the button solves nothing.
Apples grasping at straws for new innovations. Went from deleting buttons to adding buttons.
Just picked up the 16PM and the camera control button is a L
At this point I want them to allow people to remap it to sth else. The action button is kinda located in an inconvenient place.
People that type like this are the problem.
@@jnnx oh go intercourse yourself you big pretentious twat.
The Camera button feels like a blemish. It's a turn-off. AI should be taking over these functions. Instead of giving us AI, Apple is giving us more old-school buttons. SMH. Move forward, not backward.
AI shutter buttons - I've heard it all now
@@lordbalzamore7692 You don't think AI will be able to pick the best shot soon? Probably can already.
