    This video is all about how to clean hardwood floors. Maintaining your hardwood floors can be risky business if you don't know what you're doing.
    There are two types of hardwood floors, finished and unfinished. The majority of hardwood floors are gonna be finished with a smooth polyurethane or oil coating unless you are in an older home built prior to the 1950s. If you are unsure which floors you have pour a tsp of water in a small corner and watch how the wood reacts to it. Unfinished hardwood will absorb it like a sponge.
    To clean your hardwood flooring you are either gonna go with a level 1 cleaning or a level 2 cleaning.
    The level 1 cleaning is for floors with that aren't very dirty and have low traffic. This cleaning is perfect for those of you who want to give your hardwood a little touch to make them look fresh again.
    Just spray some Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner onto the floor and mop along the grain with a flat mop. Simple!
    The level 2 cleaning is for hardwood floors that are dirty and have high traffic. Just fill up a bucket 3/4 of the way full with warm water and pour 2 cap fulls of Murphys Oil Soap into the water. From that point grab a string mop, ring it out till it's damp and use it wipe off and clean the floors. Be sure to change the water out when it gets dirty.
    Also, avoid putting too much water on the floor. Too much water will sink into the cracks and cause your floors to expand and warp.
    Two more things to avoid are waxy cleaners and vinegar. Waxy cleaners with leave a residue and cause you hardwood floors to look dull and dirty. Vinegar will strip away the polyurethane coating over time turning you finished wood floors into unfinished. Once they are unfinished they will absorb whatever is spilled on them causing them to stain easily.

    This is the video I needed to see. Subscribed right away. Bona is great for cleanish floors, but I needed something for dirty floors. Read so many reviews not to use the Murphy's Oil Soap, so I was scared off. I will give it a try now, because Bona is just not enough for kitchen spills/messes. We also have hardwood in the downstairs bathroom, which my kid constantly gets pee all over. Any suggestions for that? I have been using an enzyme cleaner, but I worry it will damage the flooring over time. I am also dealing with a toilet bowl cleaner spill on the side of that toilet. I did not put it away after cleaning one day (and my older son tipped it over). I did not notice it for many hours and the damage was done by the time I did. Super dark stains in the wood. I used hydrogen peroxide a few times (found in another video) which took out most of the stain. I would have done it a couple more times but the cracks of the wood started getting white where the stains were. Used baking soda and salt (found online for that). It did not work, so I have darkish wood (from the toilet bowl cleaner where I am afraid to apply more peroxide) and white stains all down the cracks by the cleaner spill. Also tried so many different cleaners (even ones that claim to be safe, like Krud Kutter) on my kitchen cabinets for grease. It removes the grease, but also the stain on the wood. Will try this there instead, next time.

    I currently have concrete floors on the main level of my home, which is about 2,100 sf. In about 3 weeks I plan to have it covered with hardwood flooring, so I want to make sure that I clean it properly. I have 2 questions: 1. Would it be better to mix the Murphy’s Oil Soap with distilled water (as opposed to tap water) so that the water is free of mineral deposits, or is this just getting too picky? 2. Should I use the Bona polish after every time I mop with the Murphy’s and water mixture? Will the Bona polish cause a build-up over time? I watched a video from Gaylord Flooring and they recommend Bona cleaner as well, but they didn’t address a deeper cleaning like you did. Good video. Thanks!

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Question 1 yes to picky, it won't matter.
      Question 2, it depends on the type of hardwood you are going to install. Some hardwood has a high gloss and some has a loss gloss. If your floor is gonna be loss gloss I wouldn't worry about polishing it up to make it shiny. If you are going to install a high gloss floor I would just polish it maybe 4 times a year so every three months, but no there is no need to polish after every cleaning. If you are unhappy with the every 3 month plan go every 2 months and you should be good.

      They are all a little different but I normally just use the Bona polish. Always make sure you get the "high gloss" though if you want them shiny. Low gloss will leave them dull. You can pour some polish directly on the floor and just mop along the grain with a Bona flat mop.

    My floors are reclaimed heart pine sealed (32 years ago) with DuraSeal penetrating sealer/finish. Is Murphy’s Oil Soap the recommended cleaner? I have heard conflicting direction regarding whether Murphy’s leaves a residue. All the local floor contractors seem to only be familiar with polyurethane finished floors. I would love to find someone to refresh/refinish the floors.

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's important to understand all cleaners with leave a residue if not used correctly. Specifically, if you use too much... it will leave floors sticky. That being said, if you follow the instructions on the bottle and dilute properly the Murphys oil will leave no residue because it contains no wax. On the flip side any product that contains wax will in fact leave a residue because that's what it's designed to do. Hope this helps.

    Long story but I need to tell you the full story. At my old house "someone" spilled a pan of oil all over the kitchen floor. "Someone" attempted to clean it up but had to call a professional. Fast forward, we moved to a new house and the steam mop that was used during the grease spill was never washed and was used on the new hardwood floors. Now the floors slick with grease. Will the Murphy oil/water mixture get the grease off my floors?

      That's your call. Murphys Oil is highly concentrated so you have to do the mixing yourself. It needs to be diluted with a good amount of water in a bucket, otherwise it will leave your floors slippery possibly even sticky. You could do some trial and error. If you can get the consistently right in the spray bottle it might work out for you.

      You are very welcome! That is a complicated issue without me actually seeing the floor. The first thing you have to determine is if there is any waxy buildup because if there is buildup it won't matter what you put on them they will always look dull and dingy. If there is no buildup I would try using that Bona polish "High Gloss" a few times. Just make sure it is "high" gloss and not "low" gloss.

    i tried level 2 and it worked well, but there places (near my stove and under a dresser) where i still see a waxy build up? do i just keep repeating? or do i need to use some elbow grease in those areas with my murphy oil soap mixture?

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, there is no easy way to get the build up off without removing the finish. If you don't want to remove the finish, then yes just keep cleaning it. You may need to use you fingernails as well.

    • @CleanWithConfidence

      @@stacyr4768 I only recommend cleaning hard wood floors with a ph neutral clean like Dawn, dish soap or Murphys Oil Soap. Fabuloso is more alkaline and a little higher on the ph scale.
      To disinfect a floor you would do it the same way you disinfect a counter. Floors arent something that is normally disinfected in cleaning.

    • @CleanWithConfidence
      @CleanWithConfidence  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes ma'am, as I mention in the video I was out of the cleaner, but yes use the cleaner to clean the floors. The polish is for after they are clean to shine them up. I only recommend using the polish when they start loosing their luster though to shine them back up.
      If you do want to polish your floors up just sprinkle it directly on the floor and use that Bona flat mop with it.

    • @CleanWithConfidence

    After washing my floor with cleaner I always go back and rinse with just water to get the soap off, but you don't seem to do that every time. Is that only because your just showing the cleaning method? Am I doing an unnecessary step? I have a cat that I don't want getting any chemicals on his paws, so I'm cautious.
