    I’ve also got a pair and found them fantastic, the sound is very smooth it’s not over powering just a smooth not over punchy tone. Luv them dearly. 👌👌

    The suspension system is exactly what makes Audio Technica headphones like these preferable to other brands. Every other type I've tried hurts the top of my head after a while. That "clamping force" = crushing headache, with the pain concentrated right in the top middle of your skull, precisely where the gap between the "wings" on these is. Now you know why there's a gap. I wish it had some manual adjustment options to get a better individual fit, but I can wear them far longer than other headphones without pain.

    I got these 2 weeks ago. At first I was disappointed, especially with the lower freq range. However they sort of opened up. Sounds amazing now. Definitely a pair to own. I drive them from an XDUOO TA-01 amp.

      +David Farrugia actually they don't have a ton of bass so you can always EQ them

    I have mine for 5 years and love them. Be careful with the cord connection at the phones... it is not hacked, and fails if stressed or pulled on too much. My wife's set failed there.

    Great review as always. bought my first open back of these. Cant wait to get it. im still impressed that you answer almost all comments. you really really deserve more than 4.5k subscribers. Would love to hear your review of the ath ad900x.

      +Halim I still have it. The short version of the AD900X is that it has no bass and huge 4k and 10k peaks but also a very good soundstage for gamers. Useful for first person shooters but much too lean and bright and harsh sounding for music IMO and also a very weird fit since the earcups don't swivel

      metal571 yes, i hear u, i know bout the fit :) im gonna see if i have to bend it a little bit or not, But a hell of a price that i cant ignore, less than 100usd here and only 1 is left. i just have to take :), btw still have the m50x if this proves to be that bad a choice

  • @thirtyacres7504
    @thirtyacres7504 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I guess I have a tall/big head. I've tried many different headphones from Sennheiser HD6xx, 598 SE, Meze 99, Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro, and these didn't feel comfortable. Either too much clamping force (HD6xx), or it didn't extend enough (DT770). The Meze 99 extended just enough, but could have used one more click, and the ear cups were too small. For me, the right fit has been the Audio Technica ATH-AD700x (900x, 1000x). The wings allow for proper resting without the clamp down force of tight headbands for bigger and taller heads. If you have a small head, then it will droop down. This even happens to me and I have a large head. Because it rests on my ears comfortably and light as any headphones can get, I don't feel discomfort. There's zero clamping. And I just find it extremely challenging to find any headphones that are more comfortable. I've tried!

    Have you tried the open back Ath-ad1000x or 2000x? If so how'd you like them? I'm looking for some nice open back cans for music and gaming (I primarily listen to Metal, Rap, and Alternative, and I play mostly fps or rpg games). I have been heavily been leaning towards the ad1000x's or the Fedelio x2, could you provide some guidance?

  • @AromaFrank
    @AromaFrank 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I just bought them and I must say you're more then right, the sound is so great AMAZING! Unbelievable enjoyable, rich and full bodied, and not just the treble but the bass as well feels full with a nice punch. Thanks so much for ur recommendation!
    One question: Which replacement earpads would you recommend?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you enjoy them as much as I do. I haven't tried any myself but I recommend against getting any of the pads for the open back AD series as they can change the sound drastically from what I've read. Apparently the Clarino pads used for the A1000X and A2000X are a good upgrade.

    • @AromaFrank
      @AromaFrank 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +metal571 Can U pls tell me where can I get those pads?
      Btw forgot to mention they simply blown away my HFI-580 (going to sell them). Also - a very interesting fact with this cans - I can listen to them at high volume and it won't be too sharp to my ears because of its "creamy" sound, which means I can easily be taken over from my music at high volume in high moments..:) Super Fantastic! Thanks Again!!

    I recently got the AD900X and I am one of those skinny-headed people you mentioned. They fit and sit quite fine for me, but they do have a fairly big weight difference from the closed backs that you're reviewing here.
    A small work around for those with issues of these headphones slipping down is to unscrew the wings, and loop a hair-band around the arm (from underneath) to try to aid the clamping a bit or add a bit more support at the top of the head. A small and simple mod that doesn't damage the headphone.
    AD900X has an unbraided cord and also the 3.5mm jack is rather unimpressive next to this. I feel a bit cheated at that.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, interesting. I thought AT used that kind of cable and jack on all their higher end stuff. Yep, the hairband mod is a pretty good way to overcome the light clamp from the wings.

    • @orangesims
      @orangesims 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was a bit disappointed that it was just a regular, plastic, un-threaded jack, even though the 6.3mm adapter has an internal thread. Still, it's a rather small gripe and certainly doesn't detract from the quality of the headphones.
      They weigh only 265grams compared to the 330g of the A900X, so I haven't even needed to do that hair-band mod due the light construction, however it's an easy option if the need comes along.

  • @AromaFrank
    @AromaFrank 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    To all who complain about the fit, that it's not tight enough and sound is leaking out. I would like to share what I did to fix that. I connected the two Wings of the headphone together (from above) with a rubber from "Goody ouchless" rubbers (their rubbers are surrounded with fabric so it wont scratch or stick to anything) and they hold together very nicely, not too much, just perfectly. Enjoy

    • @metal571
      @metal571  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Katz yeah rubber bands holding the wings together is the classic trick

  • @philshort3445

    The A900X sounds amazingly similar to my studio monitor speakers which is exactly what I was looking for in a headphone. Now I can listen to superb quality sound without causing my neighbours any problems. Despite my neighbours house being detached from mine by over 50 feet , they can't hear my audio system but they complained that the bass travelling through the ground makes their house shake and vibrate.

    I've "had" these, and they did sound OK. They were a step above the A700X model I had a few years back. The reason I say "had", is because they broke. The hing is made of cheap plastic, and so I would note rank these as durable. My A700X cans broke in the same location, go figure. They did sound OK, but nothing spectacular. The bass on these was a bit reserved, but you are right, the mid range is were these shined. I did burn them in, and they did sound better after 20 or so hours of use. Sadly, they are not durable. I have decided I will not pursue a replacement of these. I'm going to buy some beyerdynamic DT-770 Pros ( 80ohm), Audio Technica ATH-M40X and a Pair of Sony MDR-7506. So far, the Sony's are bright and childish ( I like that ), the M40x's are a bit reserved and mature. There tonal quality is very nice and flat. I have a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50, and they are great for movies, but can be a little over bearing ( low end ) for detailed music listening. I like bass, but these are like having a mini sub on your head. For Hip-hop-R&B, Pop, they sound great, but for Classical, World, or New age, not really recommended!!! For Rock / Medal genre, its a toss up. The M50s are like the Sony 7506, but in the teenage years, with more low end and not quite as bright. To clarify, I like the M50's, but they are not for all "my" listening purposes. I'm still waiting on the 770 pro's in the mail, so I can't speak for them just yet.

    Is it amp/dac dependent? If so, which amp/dac would you recommend for these headphones?
    Would you say it's a decent upgrade from ATH M-50?
    Thank you in advance.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely an upgrade over the M50, definitely. I don't really own any serious DACs or amps right now, but I'm sure you can bring out the best in this with a Modi 2 and Magni 2.

    Excellent precise review, I have both the A900X and DT770 and love them too. Hard to beat for the price. The 770s are my daily users because of the comfort and I like the Beyer sound. I am trying to decide if I want to upgrade to either the T1 or LCD2, lots of coin..!

    • @metal571

      Those two are way different. LCD2 very smooth and T1 much brighter like a typical Beyer

    • @benlg9125
      @benlg9125 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your opinion. Sounds like the T1 is for me, I like the forward sound. Seems like most of Headfi tend to agree too. Any comments if Audeze headphones are really worth the price compared to Senn/Beyer, do you really get that much more?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LCD2 2016 version is supposed to be really good. I wouldn't jump on the T1 until hearing it

    Nice review! I've never owned an Audio-Technica headphone, but I'll consider one whenever I make another headphone purchase. What headphone do you plan on reviewing next? Or is that perhaps a secret? :P

    • @metal571
      @metal571  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I still haven't talked about my HD595 modded HD555 or my PortaPro yet. The rest I've covered. I'm actually sending this guy back cause of the channel imbalance issue. It's pretty bad and I just don't want to take a chance on another one. Also compared to the DT770 it just lacks details because the treble is relaxed. I guess I've become a treble detail head of sorts. Still recommended though at this price, but I doubt people like you would find it exceptional ;) What I need next is a Schiit Magni 2, and then I plan on buying a TOTL by the end of the year. Probably the HD800 or T1.

    • @jackskelly887
      @jackskelly887 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      metal571/Term1naLFurY Well yeah, I probably won't buy the AD900X, but I'd certainly like to hear it. :) From what I've heard and read, it's a great value for what it's going for ($144.95 currently on Amazon), and I think it's always great to have at least one mid-fi headphone in everyone's collection.
      You mentioned that the volume from one of the Audio-Technica's earcups noticeably decreased. This piqued my interest because I've read accounts of STAX owners having this problem. One possible culprit is dust, so I've tried to always keep my SR-009 on a stand where the earcups are sealed. I think I'm even going to buy a dust cover to put on top of that just to be safe than sorry. I already noticed that the left earcup is just a hair louder (when I turn the volume all the way down on my amp and then turn it up very slowly), but it's unnoticeable at normal listening levels (I just hope it doesn't get worse). I know there are a host of other issues that can cause channel imbalance, I'm just curious if that's what happened in this case too.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jacks Kelly With dynamic drivers I don't think that's usually what causes any issues, that's more of an estat thing having dust on the driver. In this case it was simply from the factory, mismatched in volume between the two drivers. Sometimes it can happen, but for some headphones it is just the way they are designed so I'm not really sure but according to other people with the A900X I might just have a faulty one. I've never heard this problem on any Sennheisers, AKGs, or Beyers, which tend to come with very well matched driver responses. Also BTW this is the closed back A900X not the AD900X, which is open.

    • @jackskelly887
      @jackskelly887 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      metal571/Term1naLFurY Oh, my mistake, I meant the A900X. If you have to choose between getting either the HD800 or T1, I would choose the HD800 personally (having owned both), but they're both great.

      That's a tough question. While I love the A900X, I haven't heard the COPs. But from what I've read either would be a great choice for music enjoyment. I listen to a mix of EDM and metal the A900X works perfectly for those genres. That, I can tell you.

    Thanks for the review. I've been on the fence with these for a while. Would you say they're the best closed headphones for metal in a moderate price bracket - $300 and below? I'm looking for something with decent isolation that can also provide that airy guitar sound of opened cans. Ever come across good semi-open cans with some isolation that don't allow you to hear every single noise from your neighbors yard? Or is isolation simply a lost cause in anything other than a fully closed back?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In my experience anything semi-open is essentially 90 percent open back and leaks almost as much. If you want some slam to your bass check out my DT770/80 ohm review. The K550 is a very neutral option but is a bit rough with metal guitar distortion in the upper mids and the bass extends well but isn't strong. The A900X is more colored and has warm mids and not a ton of bass impact either, but its mids are never fatiguing with metal and guitars sound awesome on it. Take your pick, I got reviews on all 3.

    • @jotunblod
      @jotunblod 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +metal571 I still haven't decided. Was actually leaning towards the Beyer T70, but eh, I think it's probably overkill - too detailed and pristine for my purposes(metal/old jazz/gaming). The driver imbalance of the 900x keeps putting me off, as well as perhaps some minor veiling that I've seen described. Also I keep flipping between open or closed cans. Ultimately I'm trying to find something that has an aggressive guitar sound that is upfront, while not removing the mid presence of vocals like the m50 does. The 900x apparently is great with vocals, but maybe not always upfront with guitar, as you say guitar sometimes gets pushed back in the mix. Seems headphones are either relaxed/warm or hollow/bright for the most part.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** HD 600 will do what you are looking for, or if you can't afford that the 598 or 558 has almost the same sound signature

    • @jotunblod
      @jotunblod 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +metal571 Prob would have to be the 598 as I'm not really looking to get an additional amp for the 600. The 598 can almost be said to be the open version of the 900x - 900x having more bass and 598 being more open and refined with similar sound signature? The drivers don't seem to match all that well on the graph of those either but I've never read any complaints about that for the 598. Seems it's just more noticeable on the 900x for some reason.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah they sound somewhat different now that I've been using them a while. A900X is smoother through the mids and still has a prominent spike at 10k. 598 has a more even response but rolls off the bass earlier

  • @ChiaDai

    Do you still consider these as your favorite closed-back in around sub-$300 range ? Just bought dt770 80ohm based on your video and wonder if these ( intended for vocals, J-pop, and string OST ) would complement well with 770 ( using primarily for movie and anime now )

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right now I've been using the 380 a lot. But the A900X is a special sauce kind of headphone. Yes very different from the 770s so would be a good addition for you I think.

    • @ChiaDai
      @ChiaDai 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you like a900x sound a bit more than hd380. Why the switch ? It's a little hard to get my hands on a900x. Any alternative in mind with similar signature ?
      Comfort level which do you prefer ?(dt770 fits my head comfortably for long period of listening if that says anything.) Thanks a lot for the instantaneous response :-)

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chia Dai 380 is a bit more comfortable, larger pads but higher clamp. The only reason I use the 380 is that I really only use closed backs at work that have the highest isolation I can find, and the A900X only has average isolation. It leaks too much to really use where I do in an office with an officemate

    I would like to ask you for your opinion. I'm thinking about the ATH-A990Z and would like to ask if they sound the same as the A900X? Are the upgrade version of the ATH-A900X? Are they completely different headphones?
    I ordered an ATH-A990Z from amazon and noticeably the left earphone plays louder than the right one. The seller said that this model is like that, while the website says that it is not possible. At 500Hz the difference is about 2-3dB, while at 1000Hz it reaches up to 5dB.
    I'm afraid this is not a manufacturing defect of this model. Regards.

      They do not sound the same. 990z is a downgrade to the 900x. Not surprised about the problem you're having with them. Audio-technica usually screws something up. I have the 990z here now. Can't wait to return them. They make me sick just looking at them. Maybe I will trade them in for a pair of beats.

Looking for another closed can set for digital piano (Jazz) playing, recording (sax, piano) and mixing. Noisy surroundings. I have horrible TMJ (jaw joint) issues. Bought and returning BD DT 7709 Pro - 5 minutes was all my jaw could stand. My 271's don't hurt. Read somewhere that the A900X have higher clamping = bad for me. I usually like open cans, or at least I'm on the hunt for that. I have my closed can/bass monsters, I have M Audio Q 40, V Moda M 100, Sony XB 500 and Ultrasone Pro 900.. I recently have been craving open-back clarity inducing headphones. I started with the Grado SR80e as I got to test it out at a local audio store. I have to say I know this in your face sound is not for everyone, but I personally love it for most musics with traditional instruments. I try to EQ the highs down a bit as they can get a little harsh. My next cans will be another open-back. Debating between the Grado 325 i, since I seem to like the Grado sound, and the AT AD900x

    Dear sir! I listen to music everyday , its one of the things that really makes me feel good (all genres from zappa to synthwave , to tribal jazz and pure heavy metal with some fat rap beats in the middle! lol ), but my understanding of the specifics of sound and headphones is very limited. the way you explain it tho , it makes me really understand what you are talking about, and that's very pleasing! My last headphones just broke, and I'm looking for a new pair. the way you talked about this ones, makes me really thing they are the ideal ""fit"" for me! I want a sound that is not very "histerical" , a "sweet" sound with good detail , that respects the original sound created by the artists, and since I also game (and that's very important for me too) , I want good directional input. This are the ideal "fit" for me , and not just the ideal fit , because I don't have a large head , my face is thin! Is there any headphones u recall that suit those parameters? this kind of sound and directional input, made for smaller heads? if u do , great! id u don't , great| its very pleasing to listen to you talking about sound, good job!

      Definitely better because the cups give your ears a lot more room in terms of depth. I wear glasses myself and haven't had an issue with any of the cans I've owned, but the 271 is hard for me to deal with over long periods without taking out the foam in front of the drivers to give my ears more room.

    First off I want to thank you for your review, I have watched many of your video reviews and like them a lot, unfortunately I am not quite as satisfied with my headphone purchase, these Audio Technica ATH-A900x.
    My issues are numerous and quite serious, really deal-breaking unfortunately as I was super excited and looking forward to getting these headphones and really, really wanted to like them, but I just don't.
    1. It is definitely an issue, and I personally consider it very serious; the driver matching is terrible, my right earcup is significantly louder than the left. If I am going to pay $100+ on a pair of headphones this should not happen, it is simply unacceptable to me. I know it's an easy fix, and I did "fix" it on both my stereo amp and my computer, but again, this simply should not happen with a $100+ pair of audiophile headphones.
    2. This might sound strange, but in spite of their lightweight build and supposedly light clamping force(according to all that I've read and heard), I find them physically uncomfortable because there is too much pressure on the side of my head. The wings work fine for me, I have no issue with them as the headphones don't slip off my head or anything, but the force around my ears is simply uncomfortable and not easily tolerated. And like you say, these cans are quite isolating, which while not a huge issue, I don't especially like.
    3. Well, I could go on and on and on, but I'm not giving my own review here, just hoping someone could recommend something else.
    I don't like the sound of these, I'd say they're maybe a bit fuller, but I personally don't find them much better than my Sony MDR V6s, which unfortunately broke recently, one side, as the wire got frayed, hence the purchase of these AT A900xs.
    I don't have anything to compare these to(except my Sonys), but I don't hear an expansive soundstage at all, certainly nothing that extends much beyond the earcups. I also wish things were clearer, with greater instrumental separation and detail, more nuance and openness/airiness. Personally, I feel the sound of these are very homogeneous(obviously with different timbres of course) like a large mass/blob of sound, not necessarily bloated, but definitely not refined either. I don't think I would use the word lush to describe them, but that's me. I guess I'd say that I think I tend to prefer a "brighter" sound. I like the idea of a neutral monitor headphone that's "balanced" but I don't especially like laid back, but I don't want in your face and strident either. I don't know if this is an apt analogy, but while I certainly don't like someone yelling/screaming at me, I don't want to have to lean in to hear someone whispering either. I want someone to speak up, I guess speak forward, loudly and clearly, then I will be actively engaged in listening to them.
    I listen mostly to classical music and am definitely not crazy about bass, but that's not to say that bass is not important to me, it is, but I'm okay with it being a bit understated and in the background. I guess it's most important that it not interfere with the rest of the sound/music, and be pretty quick and tonally accurate.
    The reason I didn't go with the Sennheiser HD 600s is because, I didn't want to spend an extra $100, ie. over $200, $240+ for a pair of headphones, and I don't really like the idea of open headphones either. I want to be able to listen to my music privately without disturbing others.
    So are there any suggestions that you can make, for a closed back headphone less than $200, meeting many of the criteria I laid out above?
    And while I haven't heard them, I don't think I'm going to be a Beats guy, as I certainly don't give a darn about the marketing hype or popularity.
    I suppose this may be an impossible task, but hopefully someone is up to the challenge.
    Finally, again, this isn't personal, I really did like and appreciate your review Metal571, I watched the video numerous times actually, but I I just want to say how disappointed I am that these headphones are not all I've seen and heard them made out to be by so many people/online reviewers.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh I don't blame you, I never would have recommended something like this for classical. Yes, the channel imbalance is well known but isn't bad enough for me to be bothered by it since I enjoy the rest of the sound so much for the genres I tend to listen to. No, I don't have any recommendations under 200. SAVE up, and buy the HD 600. It is dead neutral and was specifically designed as a classical music reference headphone. That's what you want, as well as some source powerful enough to drive it like a headphone amp.

    So I'm coming from M50's. I loved them, but I'm giving them to a buddy and I wanna try something different this time. I cant decide between these A900x, or Beyerdynamics DT-770 Pro 80. I dont want to be using any amps. I'll be using them on my phone(galaxy s5) and for desktop gaming. AD900x variant are also on the list. Thoughts? A900X is easier to drive than the 770, and the AD900X open back is also easier to drive but sounds quite different than the A900X. Depends on if your priority is music or gaming. Also you definitely won't be able to use the AD900X in public as they are wide open

    • @TalmidimAlex
      @TalmidimAlex 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +metal571 Sound wise, which would you recommend, A900x's or DT770-80's? I listen to too many genres to say I need a headphone to specialize in one. Since I dont plan on using an amp(just inconvenient), would I still be able to enjoy the Dt770-80's. I hear mixed comments everywhere regarding not using an amp. Thank you for replying so quick haha

    • @metal571
      @metal571  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      TalmidimAlex DT770 is more colored so I'd get the A900X and it's much easier to drive. Amps make almost no difference in sound quality most of the time unless your source is extremely bad. The 770 is not effortless to drive with simple sources like phones and motherboard audio

    Hi! As always I like your review, nice and detailed! But now comes the part where I completely disagree with you.
    Yesterday I auditioned the A990z, which supposed to be the upgrade of the A900x. If they bear any resemblance, than I think we are never gonna love the same headphones. It has this kind of hifi sound that I was moving away from the very first moment I heard the M50x. Its bass is sloppy and it is exaggerrated in the midbass region, but the lowpoint is really the missing upper midrange. Vocals - particulary female ones - sound distant and without definition, because everything is missing between 1k and 8k. I already know very precisely that this area is what you find fatiguing, so I understand why you like them. This is the area that is missing on the Momentum and to some extent on the M40x and the MDR-1A. And that is what made me buy the M50x instead of them. The treble is nice though, and it helps to bring back some sparkle. I have read that this is the area where they improved, and removed some sibilance (aka a 8-10k peak). It has this really awkward hifi V-shape, that just never really made me happy. And although I think it is a forgiving sound, and I can see why people prefer over the M50x-representation I always wonder why they call this kind of sound signature more neutral. Hell no! It is less neutral in every way. If you really want neutral in the mastering sense of the word, than stick with the Harman curve. And these are way further than the M50x!
    Add to that the huge pads make it not really over ear, as they sit on the boundary of my ears, and I find it highly disturbing. The M50x pads are not big and comfy, but at least my ears fit in the hole.
    Overall for me it is way behind the M50x in every sense. For the current price of the A900x (150$) I would say it could be good for some people, but even considering its sound signature I would go for the MDR-1A as it is more comfortable and portable. But for the asking price of the A990z (260$), no way I would buy it!

    • @metal571
      @metal571  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I've heard the A990Z is not supposed to be the same as this at all, much worse actually overall

      @andrasnelhiebel6726 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      metal571 That is totally possible, so take my words with a grain of salt. However I still feel from your review that I would have problem with the missing upper midrange. The problem is also there on the A1000x when you see Tyll's graphs. And the comfort also did not convince me. Anyway it is always worth trying something else.
      It would be good if you could test the A990z, I am really curious about your oppinion about them.

    • @andrasnelhiebel6726
      @andrasnelhiebel6726 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like night and day. These have a smooth V-shaped sound (quite strong bass and sprakling treble, but nice laid back in the middle), the MSR7 is upper mid forward (vocals are very much in your face, but bass is quite missing). The MSR7 is compact and portable, folds flat, and come with removable short cables and one with a mic. These are more home hifi headphones, bulky and the cables are attached. Comfortwise I prefer the MSR7, although they have a stronger clamping force. I dont like the form of the pads on these, they are just not big enough to squeeze my ears inside - which is odd consindering the huge housing. I dont have that issue with the MSR7.
      Anyway they are built for different purposes. Both of them are good in their categories.

      The 900Z or 990Z is very similar, perhaps a bit warmer according to people who have heard it. I still wouldn't pay much more than 150. 180 is not too bad. The 1000Z could be very different, especially with fit since the 1000 and 2000 series models don't have hinged ear cups.

    Recently I compared it with m50x, DT700 pro x, DT177x go.
    I thinks A900X has the widest soundstage. DT177x has the deepest bass but narrower soundstage. DT700 has wider soundstage than DT177x, but similar bass as A900x. M50x is not at the same level as these 3. So I sold it.
    Overall, A900X is very good among these 3, maybe the best all arounder. But one thing might be the deal breaker, is that DT700 and DT177x use Beyerdynamic Tesla technology, which is much easier to drive although the have 48ohm and 32 ohm respectively, they are noticably louder than A900x. If you use mobile or laptop without amp a lot, go for Beyerdynamic. But these two are more expensive.

      Never thought to compare all of those, but I still have the A900X and DT 770 80 ohm and use the latter mostly because of the super comfortable velour pads

    I own HD600 and K551 (quite flat cans) and I’m looking for a more musical pair to complete my collection. Headphones with thight and punchy bass, amazing mids, airy treble and wide soundstage... Something bringing emotion from the music... I’ve heard good things about Grado SR325e and ATH-Axxx series, but what would be your top pick(s)?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dominic Boucher can't stand Grados, the mids are anything but smooth and there's no sub bass. A 250 ohm DT770 has very punchy bass, a wide stage, and quite bright and lively highs with lots of extension if you want to give that a try.

    • @metal571

      Your ears will definitely touch the fabric, but the fabric on these is very soft and the drivers are way back in the earcups, and angled. Hello. I think I'd like to pull the trigger on these now but I have some reservations. So, I hope you can address these issues.
    1. You're not the only person who has complained about one of the drivers being louder than the other. I can, at least, remember reading two such complaints on head-fi. Do you think that's something to worry about ?
    2. The con that most people list for these headphones is the wing support design. They claim that it's only suited for those with large heads. Now, its difficult to know what constitutes a large head. If these cans can properly rest on your head, it means that they will properly rest on my head if the circumference of my head is equal to or larger than that of yours. The problem is I can't discern from the video the circumference of your head. Mine is 59cm. I know this sounds ridiculous, would you mind reporting yours ?
    3. Where can I buy these ? I heard they went for $150 in the past. I wouldn't mind buying refurbished.
    Thanks.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +medwatt I would get a pair from Amazon, that way you can always easily return them if you don't like them. The wing supports work for me but I know others with smaller heads that don't have much of an issue. As far as the channel imbalance, yeah, that's definitely a thing, but is easily fixable by either using the Windows balance controls or an EQ program. It's about 0.5-1 dB off so nothing major, but noticeable.

    • @medwatt
      @medwatt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      metal571 I don't think you can buy them from Amazon; only from 3rd party sellers from Japan meaning returning things will require quite an effort.

      metal571 I know. It was also on buydig. Now, only the open version of these cans are available with prime. Its a bit risky buying from a seller in Japan and its also a little more expensive. Given the state of the Japanese Yen, shouldn't the price have gone lower ?

    • @metal571
      @metal571  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      medwatt maybe the fact that they're "discontinued" in the US has driven up the price. Looks like the A700X is still available on prime though. It should be somewhat similar as I have the A500X as well and it has a very similar sound as the 900 just not as refined. But I couldn't tell you for sure how the 700 sounds.

      @metal571  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, they're going for 150 right now new on Amazon, so might as well get them brand new. It's a good price for the quality they deliver, yes. You won't need a dedicated sound card, but most motherboards don't support virtual surround effects like Dolby Headphone if that's what you want to use with them. They're very low impedance so will run just fine with onboard sound. Their sound is pretty flat, with a slight edge in the upper mids, decent treble detail, and good but not excellent bass extension. I've heard them once. A good all around headphone that can be used for gaming or music alike.

    • @metal571
      @metal571  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is, it's better to get a headphone that's more flat for hearing details like that. Bassy headphones like the 770 can obscure fine details at times. They do also need a decent amount of power. The 32 ohm is what I would recommend as that one has less of a bass boost than the 80 ohm which has the most boost.

There is a prominent 10k spike actually that I probably didn't understand at the time I filmed this. Still syrupy mids and enjoyable for sure. There are like 6/7 headphones, in a similar price range, and with almost the same specs.
      there are ath-A, ath-AX, and ath-aZ, with the 500, 700, and 900 series.
