Absolutely a fun key. Not only for facilitating other altissimo notes, but shakes ( trills with wide intervals). Thank you as always for your unique communication to the Sax Community!
I'm with you! Glad to have the high F# key for all of the same reasons. One comment: at 5:04 while pushing the F# key with your RH index for a high G sound, I also push the side Bb key with the same finger at the same time. It opens the high G up to an even more in tune and stable G note.
Good morning bro the statement you made quote l would never buy a saxophone without the high F sharp key is spot on . However l would add l would never buy a saxophone without adjustment screws on the right and left hand stacks. Have a great day sir and keep up the good work.
Omg I was looking to get a different alto sax and saw people debating this very thing on a forum. A few people said they prefer NOT to have one. So I really needed this video! Thanks!
@@FernandoFerreira-kf6kz there’s an old Yamaha YAS 21 going cheap and I have only ever heard good things about this sax but it doesn’t have a high F# key. As a tenor player that dabbles with alto, this sax might be ideal for me as I have little money to spend right now
@@amathesaxylady I own the tenor version and I actually like it better than my non-F# MKVI. That being said there are NO screw adjustments for the G/G# keys and this is HELL for the average tech (or yourself.) The adjustment is made through making the exact correct cork size for each position. This is not easy and you can't make quick adjustments so these horns (and many older horns) can leak like crazy or go south fast if cork moves or falls off. Just a friendly warning. I would go for a modern horn with high F# and screws for the key adjustments. This is 40 years of experience speaking. All the best.
I don't have a high F# key. I don't even have a sax. The closest I have is a wooden medieval instrument, single reed conical bore, with no keys, that sounds a lot like a soprano sax. But as an instrumentalist I think it's amazingly cool that such a video exists. Lunch is on me if you're ever in Vienna. Cheers from foggy Austria, Scott
Thanks for the video. I gotta give this a try sometime. I've made use of the F# key on my Cannonball to get a double high A. This has got me thinking about other possibilities. Tenors are really funny when it comes to altissimo fingerings.
Hey! Thanks for the help! Would be nice if we could see the saxophone whilst you play the tones you explained before.:) maybe put the camera little further away? Thanks.
MAN, YOU are such a GOD-send for this community. I've been trying to say this stuff for years and the idiotic things in peoples heads are ridiculous. Most of which amounts "Trane had this", "Bird used that." Or "High F# weakens the horn." And the BEST one "Oh man, I'm never gonna use that thing." So now people are purposely building "classic" horns with no high F#? AAAAGGGHHHHHHH..............F#$%&.
my teacher (old-head bebop guy) made me relearn to play chromatic scales with the side Bb and F# key for example utilizing those fingerings when it flowed better (such as a chromatic context)
Wow, thanks for that... My tenor did not have one F# , buyed in 1996, but I‘m sure if someone ask me I will show him this video! :-) Have a good New Year, stay health, thanks for all the videos, ideas and knowledge You share.
It's time more than overdue for sax company (ies) to market saxophones with your name inscribed on it, Sirvalor; I firmly believe. Your being rewarded - multifold times - for your earnest commitment to sharing and keeping music education alive, beyond its practical limits, Must be acknowledged ALSO by the "big" financial corporations etc. ( with your having a just share of the "pie") Merely my feeling! Happy New Year, Adrien! Lohvissimo.
I have a Selmer Mark 6 from 1963 and this one does not have a high f sharp key. But thanks for this clear explanation. Greetings from a tenorsax player in the Netherlands.
Hello Adriene, I really love this video and the others that you did on Altissimo, however, I have a question. You perform very nice and flawless chromatic Altissimo scale and I would like to know if there is one video or a PDF where you share all the best fingerings that you found, all the way up to Altissimo C. Is there a collection of all fingerings in one video or even better, one PDF?
Agreed. I never understood why not in this century all saxes just include it in manufacturing going forward. The marketing or dumb promotional logic labeling it for professionals or advanced only is a scam and ridiculous racket. What would happen in the sax world if they announced that saxes with no F# sharp key longer be produced and will be a thing of the past? Would people be angry about that? It should just be industry standard. This isn't 1920 anymore. FYI - (I've been playing Sax since 1982)
In my understanding, the high F# made live easier for saxplayers working in Rockbands , in the realm of E-, A- and Bnat.-keyed songs, enforced by the guitar players😄
Front F + C with the side Bb actually is perfectly in tune on my bari Super 20. First sax I've ever had that happen on lol--have to use B + Bb to hit altissimo G on it though (front key produces a high F lol). On tenor I use front F with Bis AND side Bb which is in tune (just like adding the 4 obv) but I like the feel of it better (fingering-wise). Also: I actually kind of like the "instability" bc I voice it more (like an altissimo note). Have you done any videos on articulating altissimo? It's so hard to quickly tongue notes for me.
Hi can i ask a question please ?when we are blowing the soprano sax do we have to think u or a voice inside the mouth ?my teacher said a vocal but I feel comfortable with a U vocal blowing ?which one is correct ?I can’t control the air flow steady .Thank you
Usually for any sax we use an "ahh" voicing for the lower register and an "uuu" or "eee" voicing for the upper part. Soprano sax for you may be unusual necessitating a more "eee" voicing for the full range of the saxophone. I would try what the teacher suggests for a few months and see what happens. For me, I approach soprano as I would any other saxophone. I have a review on my current soprano sax (Allora Paris professional sax) and I talk about why I like it so much and which difficulties have been eliminated from this 🎷 horn in particular.
@@pneumasax (A Selmer mkVI doesn’t have a high F# key. It’s just a joke) [Although I believe you COULD get a high F# key if you wanted it, but I guess nobody did]
#:30 is weak city, thin, not a good tone at all, the others were much, much better. Most of my (older) pro friends would not HAVE the high F# key, as it's unnecessary, throws off the integrity of the tube (changes dimensions), can leak, and adds weight. Nice alt playing, though.

This video was the deal breaker in deciding between a sax with or without high F#! Thank you so much!
Glad it helped!
Thank you for that....I've never seen those fingerings elsewhere. They work perfectly!!
Thanks. I am learning sax on a vintage student alto that doesn't have the high f# key. If I upgrade I will be sure to get a sax with that key.

I'll try that, thanks.
Is the use of the f# key mentioned in your tenor altissimo book? I'm contemplating buying your book.
Yes, there are also options for those that don't have one.
