Still wondering why is your sax sounds like that? So bright so crispy. Is it really because of the gear or mic? Or it's all about skill? I am sound more like a classic player, really want that bright crispy sound.
It's all about skill. My gear helps me achieve the sound I want, but I pretty much sound the same on anything I play. It all comes down to breath support and the speed of your air. My air is moving very very fast in a super tight stream aimed directly in the middle of my mouthpiece. That's what gives me such a big and bright crisp sound. As I slow that air down it gets more mellow. Also, my articulations are really clean and I am doing something to almost every note which makes the phrases sound cleaner like it has direction. The way I tell my students to think about phrases is they are setting up goal notes. The goal notes are the destination. Every other note is either going to that goal note or coming from it. jackhsu87阿靈師師的 I know this is an old comment, but if you’re still wondering I can explain. “Faster air” is always a misleading phrase even though it’s a true one. Faster air does NOT mean pushing air out of your lungs at a faster rate. It means the path of travel for the air coming out of your lungs is thinner. Faster air =smaller hole, or in this case, your inner mouth cavity and throat. If you think of your body as part of the saxophone it may make more sense. The most efficient way to achieve this kind of sound is to transcribe players that have this kind of sound and try to sound exactly like them, and while you’re doing this, experiment with this smaller air stream concept. Scott has transcribed a lot of Charlie Parker and this is a good place to start. I started to find a similar sound when I really dig into CP and Cannonball Adderly but don’t stop there. I also noticed a dramatic change in my sound when I started digging into the altissimo range because having a smaller faster air stream helps those notes pop.

Haven't really played since high school - but joined the Community Band recently - had an F, F# passage and knew there was a better way. But which key was it? Again, it's so easy to be amazed that Adolphe worked all these things out when he was designing our horn. We had a great genius of a father!
Hey Joesph, they will make some impossible licks very easy. It takes a little getting use to them at first, but once you've got them it will make playing fast so much easier!

Hey Juan! Thanks!! If your C# is that out of tune, chances are you need a trip to the repair man. Something is either opening to much or not enough, or it has something to do with the gear that you are using.
I'm really glad I found this video. I've been looking at a fingering chart and it never mentioned the tear drop key at all. Also you said you would come back to the right hand key next to the alt f# but you didn't. What's it for? Also is octave key and low C an alternative that Is used?
Both of those keys are F# keys. The lower one is for the normal range of the sax. The upper one is for your high F# (3 palm keys or front F). No, that C doesn't sound the same as a regular C. You're getting an overtone. It's cool from some improv stuff, but not for playing a regular C

Many thanks. Going from middle C to middle D could involve a change from one finger to all + octave key, awkward. Just use top e key without octave key. You can then even trill between the two.
I switched from flute to Saxophon and therefore have been using the one one b flat a lot because it's legit on flute. I find if you use the middle finger in the right hand instead of the index finger, the intonation is better and it sounds brighter
I often use my low C and C# with the octave key for my middle C/C#. This helps when you’re playing fast on that upper mid range, and it also cures that weird open C# tone and intonation problem we all hate. If I have a middle C#\D trill, I use the upper stack D without the octave key. I do the same for D/Eb as pinky Eb is hard to trill.
I'm a beginner player and I'm having trouble trying to get the Reed to sound and to properly press the right keys also I'm having massive headaches from blowing, I know this sounds stupid but any advices?
Your C# key is sticking, which is a pretty common problem. You need to physically open the key with your fingers. It's the 3rd key down from the top of the bell. When you pull it open, you'll hear it the sticky sound as you pull it open.
I used to get jumped on all the time back in school concert band for using alternate fingering. I got called lazy buy not trying to make the naturals as clean as possible.
Another thing is I stopped using middle c and open C sharp unless grace notes for the middle cs at this point as they are a the only notes out of tune for me.

What I miss in your explanations is the following fingering, which makes it much easier to switch from High D# to High E visa versa... High D# to High E .. using keys: D plus top side key (E) followed by D# plus side key E. In this case you only add the D# key to get the high E. It is much smoother and faster... for me.... I would just finger the palm key D & D# and then add the E side key. Those are all regular palm key fingerings. D# to E could be tough if you were trying it with a front E, but if you play the palm key E then D# to E is pretty smooth and easy.
Awesome, but I have come to expect nothing less on your channel. I really struggle with the front E. I can start on that front F and drop the half step down but just can't seem to start on the E and have it come out. Pretty sure I need to if I want to learn the solo from Still Rock and Roll as he is playing that E as a grace note into the F. If it matters this is a vintage conn tenor. Also I'm still in the beginner category.
That front E isn't a very stable note, that's why you hear growls often times when people use it. For the Still Rock solo, try going from the palm key E to the front F. It's a pretty standard fingering. That's probably how I would play it. I use the front E more coming down from an F than going up to an F.
I didn't realize that! It's been a while since I've played a vintage sax. So if I finger a G# by using the C# (or B, Bb key) what happens? Does it just come out as a weird sound or is it just a G because the G# key isn't pressed?
Just a G. Idea for some next video, get a vintage sax(with forked Eb, old left pinky table, etc) and talk about how advanced ergonomics have todays instruments.
I can't speak to others but I play a Conn New Wonder series 1 tenor from 1924. On that instrument, you just get a g. One of them, if you hold the c#, changes pitch slightly. This instrument has a g/g# trill key between the f and e keys. Pressing that undoes the g# key. On a modern instrument is that trill key still there?

At this point I feel I will end up with modern saxes and may as well sell the vintage stuff. Already sold my MkVI's and Gibson jazz guitar. Too paranoid to play them in public. Too many people here get their equipment stolen when you turn your back or even leave them in the trunk when you go for a quick bite to eat. People are evil. It sucks but most people just hear "the sound of a saxophone" or whatever. My ex-girlfriend heard Miles Davis playing and said "he plays sax well doesn't he?" I almost died.
I've only used one my entire saxophone life. The Shure Clip on mic. I think it goes for around $150. It's the standard when it comes to clip on mics. With wireless mics there are a lot more options.
I use Bis as the default Bb, and the side key when it's in the context of A#. The 1-4 and 1-5 fingerings are good for arpeggio motions from F to Bb or F# to A#.
I was looking for a good explanation of the front F key and it’s usage. I don’t think I had one of these back in 1984....at least I don’t remember it having it on the old YS-23. (Probably did but never used it}. Picked up playing again and bought a new horn (52nd)...and it has all the “bells and whistles”. Thanks!
Very informative! I no pro and just play as a hobby. I can play Front F and get sound, and drop to Front E easily. But... if I try to play just Front E first I don't get anything. Weird. Any tips? Anyone?
Hey Tim, that's actually a fairly common problem. The front E is not that stable of a note, especially when you are going to it without a close setup note.
@@ScottPaddock Thx! I discovered, if I orient my lips and jaw just right it will work then, but only a little. I guess I'll just not use it then. Front F# (no F# key) has always been a problem. At times I can get something out, but it is faint. Blows my mind how some guys can hit that then High G, G#, and even an A. Maybe I need a professional sax for that. I just have a Yamaha YAS 23 Student model.

It's slowing me down cuz it's new, but I feel it will pay for itself in speed gained very soon. Never really used the side C either. Still incorporating front F and E. Hey! Yeah, that Fork F# and Side C will definitely speed you up and clean you up as you get use to it. I can't even begin to tell you how many times a student of mine thought a passage of music was impossible until I reminded them of the correct fingerings to use. Agree with the front F and E being a great way to get into altissimo. Personally I use the front F way more going up, but use both of them a lot coming back down. Glad you're liking the videos!!
Oh, I didn’t know about the alternate high E. Learned something. However, I can’t seem to play it outright. I can move from the high F to the high E, but I can’t start the E from nothing. Tried moving my mouth around the mouthpiece and stuff but nothing. Any tips?
It's not a very stable note on the sax, and I use it mostly when coming down from an F, but there are also tweaks your sax tech can do to your horn to make it respond better. But I always think as the front E as a go between note.
I need to move my bottom lip out to get the alt high E. On my sax the alt high E sounds better than the regular high E, so I use it most of the time. Only coming from high D do I still use reg high E. I wish there was an alt high D and Eb, so I could just be done with those palm keys.
@@ScottPaddock You are right, of course. Side Bb sounds so much better. I will try to get used to it. I'll try the Bis key too, but side keys are so cool. =)
Is there another fingering for D2? Mine is messed up I think and it overtones to A2 and its starting to affect E2. It's sounds AWFUL when I try to play it. If you reply, I will make a video and link it to your reply to show you what I mean
The reason you are getting the overtone is probably because your tongue is to high. Especially if you are jumping to that note. Concentrate on getting your tongue flat in your mouth for the middle D in the AAAAAAYYYY position. That should help a lot.
@@ScottPaddock Idk, it didn't start doing this until on the way to a Band Clinic it fell off the seat on the bus and I couldn't play D2 or Eb2 and I shipped it off to get it fixed and when I got it back, it was fine and then it just started over toning.
Thanks to you, and this video, i hit high F for the first time. I have been playing for 6 days. =D I have been playing flute for decades. Does this give me an advantage or disadvantage?
Both. The fingerings are very similar, but the embouchure is completely different. However, with the breath support it takes to play a flute, you should have no problem on a sax.

Oh wow, that does work decently... slightly sharp I think, but that seems to come with most if not all alternate fingerings

So timely, I've been working a lot with the chromatic scale recently and didn't know about the fork F#. I did ask you to demonstrate it after I viewed your Bb vid. Thanks! It's slowing me down cuz it's new, but I feel it will pay for itself in speed gained very soon. Never really used the side C either. Still incorporating front F and E. The Sinta book recommends playing those as a leg up into altissimo fingerings. I get a lot out of your tutorials! Thank you!
Hey! Yeah, that Fork F# and Side C will definitely speed you up and clean you up as you get use to it. I can't even begin to tell you how many times a student of mine thought a passage of music was impossible until I reminded them of the correct fingerings to use. Agree with the front F and E being a great way to get into altissimo. Personally I use the front F way more going up, but use both of them a lot coming back down. Glad you're liking the videos!!

Oh, I didn’t know about the alternate high E. Learned something. However, I can’t seem to play it outright. I can move from the high F to the high E, but I can’t start the E from nothing. Tried moving my mouth around the mouthpiece and stuff but nothing. Any tips?
Also, even the slightest amount of drop in breath pressure and it breaks.
It's not a very stable note on the sax, and I use it mostly when coming down from an F, but there are also tweaks your sax tech can do to your horn to make it respond better. But I always think as the front E as a go between note.

I need to move my bottom lip out to get the alt high E. On my sax the alt high E sounds better than the regular high E, so I use it most of the time. Only coming from high D do I still use reg high E. I wish there was an alt high D and Eb, so I could just be done with those palm keys.

Side Bb really does sound better. I'm so used to 'flute' right hand 1 for Bb. Grrrrr
Yeah, that 1 and 1 doesn't sound very good on the sax. I use side Bb all the time, but a lot of "jazz guys" use Bis almost exclusively

The 1 & 1 B flat is also good for A sharp to B trills!
Is there another fingering for D2? Mine is messed up I think and it overtones to A2 and its starting to affect E2. It's sounds AWFUL when I try to play it. If you reply, I will make a video and link it to your reply to show you what I mean
The reason you are getting the overtone is probably because your tongue is to high. Especially if you are jumping to that note. Concentrate on getting your tongue flat in your mouth for the middle D in the AAAAAAYYYY position. That should help a lot.
@@ScottPaddock Idk, it didn't start doing this until on the way to a Band Clinic it fell off the seat on the bus and I couldn't play D2 or Eb2 and I shipped it off to get it fixed and when I got it back, it was fine and then it just started over toning.
Logan one of the rods probably got bent and there was a leak, if it happens again check to see if the keys are fully covering the holes
on my Selmer Bundy bari E is just front F key without fork

I have been playing flute for decades. Does this give me an advantage or disadvantage?
Both. The fingerings are very similar, but the embouchure is completely different. However, with the breath support it takes to play a flute, you should have no problem on a sax.

Yeah the one one b flat sucks. Take for example, chameleon by herbie hancock. The fast descent on b flat makes one and one bad
Same here. But it's engraved so hard in my muscle memory, I doubt it will be an easy change
