  • This is a short film I have been working on for the past six months. I wanted to create something different than my usual videos. A lot of people worked very hard to organize this together, I hope you like it and share it with your friends! Thanks for watching!

A Salute to those who fought and died for their beliefs; for our veterans, no matter what side they served on...
May they all see glory and grace on Judgement Day.

This poem, credited at the end of the video. is called 'The Blue and the Gray' by Francis Miles Finch. He wrote it at the conclusion of the Civil War and it was first published in 1867 by the Planter's Banner and then Atlantic Monthly, where it was picked up and printed across the country as a poem of healing and reconciliation following the horrendous conflict. You can feel of it to this very day.
And to the producers of this well done film, thank you. Nothing trembles the heart more than raw emotion.
By the flow of the inland river,
Whence the fleets of iron have fled,
Where the blades of the grave-grass quiver,
Asleep are the ranks of the dead:
Under the sod and the dew,
    Waiting the judgment-day;
    Under the one, the Blue,
    Under the other, the Gray.
These in the robings of glory,
Those in the gloom of defeat,
    All with the battle-blood gory,
In the dusk of eternity meet:
Under the sod and the dew,
    Waiting the judgment-day,
    Under the laurel, the Blue,
    Under the willow, the Gray.
From the silence of sorrowful hours
    The desolate mourners go,
    Lovingly laden with flowers
Alike for the friend and the foe:
Under the sod and the dew,
    Waiting the judgment-day,
    Under the roses, the Blue,
    Under the lilies, the Gray.
    So, with an equal splendor,
    The morning sun-rays fall,
    With a touch impartially tender,
On the blossoms blooming for all:
Under the sod and the dew,
    Waiting the judgment-day,
    Broidered with gold, the Blue,
    Mellowed with gold, the Gray.
    So, when the summer calleth,
On forest and field of grain,
    With an equal murmur falleth
The cooling drip of the rain:
Under the sod and the dew,
    Waiting the judgment-day,
Wet with the rain, the Blue,
Wet with the rain, the Gray.
    Sadly, but not with upbraiding,
    The generous deed was done,
In the storm of the years that are fading
    No braver battle was won:
Under the sod and the dew,
    Waiting the judgment-day,
    Under the blossoms, the Blue,
    Under the garlands, the Gray.
No more shall the war cry sever,
    Or the winding rivers be red;
    They banish our anger forever
When they laurel the graves of our dead!
Under the sod and the dew,
    Waiting the judgment-day,
Love and tears for the Blue,
Tears and love for the Gray.
    Francis Miles Finch

I re-enact American Civil War, I have seen many videos, and this one is up there at the top with the others. Its emotional, moving, and gives a different perspective. Very impressed. The bit at the end where they hold hands, and it fades away....its a choker moment, had me swallowing hard couple times....well done.

  • @bluegreydude4

As a Civil War reenactor, I thought that this was one of the most insightful treatments of the war and the personal cost that it involved. The way that it showed the men of both sides being gathered up by Death reminds us that 'only the dead have seen the end of war". Or, as R.E. Lee once remarked...'It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it.' I recognized the poem "The Blue and the Gray'' from a living history event that I participated in a couple of years ago. I was struck then by the power of those simple words and the ideas that they conveyed....how the living are left to cope with the aftermath of war, but the imagery presented here puts it into a much sharper focus....And it reminds me of why I reenact....So that no one ever forgets that there was more going on besides politics and battles and ideology. Mr. Fulton, I applaud your efforts and I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future....If there is ever anything that I can do to assist you in your endeavors, please feel free to contact me.

I'm an English reenactor & member of a large American Civil War Society. This short film needs an award. Pure & simple, the message is hard & emotionally powering. This film, given it's budget delivered well. Yes there were imperfections, yes there were rubber soled boots, wristwatches and fancy modern socks! but it's not about that. Kudos to the producers & keep up the good work. Hopefully you will get recognition for this.

I love this depiction of death, for he doesn’t come in to be feared but instead is gentle and kind. He doesn’t discriminate or favor others differently. He eases our suffering and helps us to our feet so that we could go onto the next chapter under his guidance. We all will eventually meet him someday, but when that day comes, know that Death is a friend who would make sure you go onto where you need to be in the next chapter.

There have been a few well done Civil War movies recently and they have all tanked at the box office because America in general couldn't give a rat's ass less about one of the most important periods in American History....As a Civil War reenactor, I see it all the time. Ask someone on the street how many slaves the Emancipation Proclamation freed....answer...NONE. The EP said that slaves had the RIGHT to be free and that IF the Federal Government won the war, then all the Army and Navy forces would do whatever it took to free them and moreover KEEP them free. Ask someone what the Morrill Tariff Act was....they have no clue.(It was the proverbial 'straw that broke the camel's back' for the South) It charged huge taxes on goods coming out of the South that had been produced with slave labor. It was one of the main causes of the Civil War. The movies that I spoke of earlier are "Gettysburg" and "Gods and Generals" both based on books written by a father and son...Michael Shaara wrote 'The Killer Angels' which was made into the movie 'Gettysburg'. His son Jeff wrote "Gods and Generals'.

I woke from a restless bed, about 3:10 am. My phone handy, without turning the overhead pin lamp, I reached, and powered up this Android. Noticing a video newly arrived, the inbox, I glimpsed at a Civil War image, then, satisfying curiosity, proceeded to view. My knowledge is moderate of this war. I know more than some, and less than not a few. But, I know enough. American born, of the North.
Some say I write poetry. Me? I say I just write what I see and hear. And I'd be the first to tell you who read these words, that words, powerful as they have been writ or spoken down the ages, in the face of haunting beauty, with many others herein, I tell you, words fail. This is not just art, poetry. Though it be technically classified as such.
This short film. This telling of history in poetry, left me stunned in a altered state, lifted and transcendent. Hung, suspended in time. The era of our Civil War. One of indescribable awe, and again beauty, a sad but true beauty.
Haunting and unspeakable. This short, brilliant little film, contains a most important message within. United brothers in arms.
United brothers in death. United in courage.
War kills men, but not their spirit of love.
Whoever the person may be, who is responsible for this amazing creation.
I salute you, with many sincere thanks.
    Outstanding work. Accomplished art.
And so, so much more. I intend to save this film, and know, a restless sleep can bring timeless beauty.

    Son vs dad
    Bro vs Bro
    Blue vs Grey
    man vs man
    on the battlefield that day
    see the blood
    see the patch
    where they lay
    what do they mean
    this blue?
    or this grey?
    Freedom is in both
    of their hearts
    they just forgot
    what tore them apart
    grey vs blue
    u may say
    both flags can fall
    but I'm here to stay
    For colors are colors
    but peace is for few
    stand next to me
    or sit in ur pew
    life is battle
    every day
    does that mean
    u should turn blue
    and I should turn grey?

He didn't write the poem. It's called "The Blue and the Gray" by Francis Miles Finch, written in 1867.

Excellent, Mr. Fulton. I could feel the emotions welling up within me. The poem and the film worked together nicely. At the beginning of my historical novel, Thank God for Michigan, I wrote and included a poem that fits nicely with the poem in your film:
    Oh Mama, Oh Mama
    *
    Oh mama, oh mama.
You loved me from cradle to grave,
and to war I must go to show I am brave.
    To you I was born,
from your arms I was torn.
    *
    Oh mama, oh mama.
    To war I must go,
    why me I don’t know.
They say I am a soldier and therefore a man,
    I’m still but a boy, I don’t know if I can.
    *
    Oh mama, Oh mama.
In battle I had many fears,
    now I bring you tears.
    On this battlefield I lie,
    I’m now going to die.
    *
    Oh mama, oh mama.
In the warmth of your womb I did grow,
within your arms love I did know.
In my moment of death I called out to you,
I’m dying, I’m dying and know not what to do.
    *
    Oh mama, oh mama.
I’m now buried under Virginia loam.
    never will I return home.
I was brave, I was bold,
`I now lay in this grave so cold.
    *
    Oh mama, oh mama.
My face you will never again see,
in your heart I will always be.
I will always love and miss you so,
now to Heaven I must go.
    *
    Oh mama, oh mama.
    From cradle to grave,
I’m the son that you taught to be brave.
Speak of me with great pride,
I am now sitting at God’s side.
    J. Michael Joslin

A second view of this had me in tears ffs! That’s very rare these cynical days. It is indeed profoundly beautiful and the grim reaper works somehow in a 19th - way. Elegiac. Reminds one of life’s profundity. Should get an award for beauty and noble - intent. Excellent action sequences.

Dustin Hill Well thank for the explenation... i think i kow allready why the south and the norht fight and i know why slaves where importend to south... but common you cant say its an insult because of the stereotype.
Americans especial in the South are Extremly Patriotic... to a point that it start to be annyoing... i think the American flag is the Flag i saw the most in my live and i dont live in the US ^^

    • @the_apex_gamer57
      @the_apex_gamer57 10 ปีที่แล้ว

TsunaTsurugi again thats the stereotype that you see from games and really dumb people that for some dumb reason everyone believes... AMERICANS ARE NOT LIKE THAT, I am an American and I live in south Carolina and I can tell you this is almost as South as you can get and I can tell you, I have not see that sterotype EVER! Everyone is patriotic about their country, even me, but what your saying is that southerners sit there, get drunk off their asses, fire guns into the air and hot and holler 'murica, and apart from the "murica" thing, because its more of a joke for us, none of that is true. You can't sit in one country and say "OH well this is what EVERYONE says that America is like this and that, so I'm just going to go along with everything that they've said even though I know nothing about America other than what I see on the news and in the books." it just doesn't work, you don't even live in America, and VISITING a country and LIVING in a country are two completely different things...
