    Hey!!!! I use Mint. Thanks so much for your content. No matter what I watch your videos. Do you really only save $.01 for not flushing? Would seem like more. I've seen people fill a water bottle with rocks, close it and put it in the tank. When you turn off your gas do you have to re-light the pilot light? Also for the dishwasher I put the detergent in it and close he door. If the door is closed then I know they're dirty because once they're washed the door opens :)

    • @dispassionateobserver

      Mint is great. I have one of my phones with them. 4GB for $15/mo.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Filing the toilet with a bottle of rocks will reduce the capacity and flushing power. So if you have an extra toilet, use just that for #1. Yes, you have to relight the pilot sometimes but mine can be lit electronically with a button.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      743 gallons per unit costs about $4 additional on your water bill. That's about $0.005 per gallon. A typical toilet flush is 1-3 gallons depending on your toilet. So about 1-3 cents each flush.

      @@gerardjachymiak5822 Yes and no. He's like this even in videos just like a few months ago too though. As an example, he was talking about traveling overseas. And one of the shuttles is very, very, very cheap but very uncomfortable. So you can pay $7 for a 3 hour shuttle ride where it's pretty much crammed like a sardine can. Whereas for $50 you could have that same 3 hour ride with a car by yourself. Or another one was where he makes a video talking about how to make Pho. I get the premise. Collect rain water to flush toilet. Uses washable towel and never use paper again. You don't need a sponge to clean your dishes. Clean it with your hands as soon as you're done eating or cooking. Don't need the AC, work place have AC during the day. At night, a cold shower and fan will do the trick. There's a lot of thing you don't need but it's nice to have them. Life is too short so enjoy it and not stress over the little things. But I do agree, being wasteful is a terrible thing.

    I would call myself cheap but I don't do a lot of these. I go for the low-hanging fruit like not getting takeout, working out at home, finding the cheapest plans for monthly payments and avoiding subscriptions. After those you quickly hit diminishing returns, especially if you have a decent income + savings rate (I like the chicken tip though!).

    Francis, hang dry your clothes! Save on dryer utility cost. Also, the dryer heat damages the clothes, so they last longer if you hang dry. And no toxic dryer sheets.
    Re re-using the contact solution, I wouldn't risk the safety of your eyes. Instead of the screw off lens cases, use the pop top cases (they give them to me for free at the Dr. Office) because the basin is smaller and takes less solution.
    I also keep my x2 weekers for longer, usually x1 month.

    Great video BTB! On the topic of taking hotel soaps + shampoos, I don't understand the stigma with taking it with you as you go. The way I frame it is as follows: 1) It's included with the cost of your stay, and since hotels buy in bulk at subsidized prices it costs them maybe $0.50 for a standard kit (hand soap bar, shampoo, conditioner, lotion) 2) Regardless of whether you use it or not, a good hotel is going to throw it away and restock for the next guest just due to simple health reasons 3) by taking that stuff with you, you save it from the landfill. Literally every single person that stays in a hotel should be taking that stuff with them.
    On the topic of bathing, I'll preface this by saying I was extremely skeptical before doing this but you honestly don't ever have to use soap or shampoo while showering. I've started a personal experiment 8 months ago by not using shampoo/soap for bathing anymore (only use soap for washing hands currently). My assumptions were that my dandruff would be aweful, my skin would feel dirty/grimy, I'd have more face/skin acne, and be more odorous. Of those assumptions, the only one that was true (for about the first 2 months) was that my dandruff became worse. But for me, after the two month mark, my dandruff and scalp itchiness went 99% away. My skin acne is non-existent, my wife always tells me I smell clean, and I feel just as clean as when I used soap/shampoo. The perks here are that you save time bathing (no need to suds up), don't have to use wash clothes, save money on soaps/shampoos, and still achieve the same end result of being clean. Anyways, figured I'd share the results of my experiment - I even thought about making a youtube video about it one day.

    Did you sell your house? Or are you renting it out? What do you mean by "digital nomad"? When my contacts get stiff and scratchy, I rub a little bit of baking soda on them to get rid of the protein deposits, rinse them well, and put them in new all purpose solution. Usually, the next time I use them, they are soft, pliable and comfortable again. If that doesn't work, then I throw them out. I am afraid to reuse contact solution -- bacteria breeding ground. Just today, I rolled up the plastic netting bag that my limes came in and am using it as a scubber sponge in the kitchen. It works pretty well!

And even better, your kitchen will always be clean because every time you have a dirty dish you hide it in the dirty dishwasher. No more dirty dishes in the sink.

    Damn I guess I am frugal too, or just smart with money. Here's the things I also do. (Everything else, I do not)
    1st - We definitely do that in our house. Putting a bottle filled with water inside a toilet water tank to save water. Or you can get one of those toilet that gives you the options to do half tank or full tank flush.
    2 - Water down a bit on the hand soap, we definitely do that too. Most of the time we use more soap than we need anyways.
    3 - Always take unfinished soaps and any other toiletries from Hotels after your stay.
    4 - Definitely always use half dime size when squeezing out toothpaste (That's really all you need). any excess is just a waste of money.
    5 - Washing your hair less with shampoo is definitely true. Our hair is supposed to feel a bit oily from natural body oil. Some shampoo's are actually more harmful for your hair. I wash my hair with Shampoo only 2 times a week (with sulfate free shampoo). rest of the week I just rinse with warm water.
    6 - We use grocery bags for trash bag. Saves money to re-use the bags instead of throwing them away.
    7 - I also re-use the towels after I dry my hands (clean hands) as napkins, then throw away after.

      Anyone turn down the water heater unit thermostat(min setting) that also saves , don't have really hot showers anyways, and have instant hot water boiler for greater temperature needs like kitchen...

    My mom taught me about the water flush. I find it nasty... so she will turn on her faucet and let it dripped. We would collect buckets of water and flush it down.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well... sort of. You can easily put too much and all this foam will come out. So I'd say about 2 teaspoon is probably the limit.

    In Germany there are even several billionaires who live cheap. Discounter markets such as Aldi and Lidl are their business so it's no surprise

    I wouldn't consider some of these things as cheap. It's more frugal and even environmentally friendly by consuming less.
