    I quit my mandatory in-office software engineering job in 2020 after 20 years. Took a 50% pay cut and got a work from home job as a glorified data entry Engineer. From bed to desk in 30 seconds. See kids off to school and when they get home. Prepping dinner and laundry is actually much easier. No more 90 minutes a day driving to-from work. No more pointless daily agile meetings(I actually have ZERO meetings now!). No more overtime or thinking about work Sunday evening. Its not all about the money or job title folks. Very true with the stress talk. Back when I had a temp contract at a hedge fund, that was extremely stressful, when that ended, it felt abnormal that I had nothing to do anymore, since I was spending every day working before for months. Never knew you had a second channel. FIRE is a luxury, away from 9-5 rat race. Chronic stress is not easily detectable and yes, it will becomes a health problem at some point. Ideally, everyone strives to be FIRE but for most, our second best choice is work/life balance to which many corporations pledge to but rarely practice in reality. I will not allow myself to stress over work. Wealth Health. No amount of money earned can buy your health back.

    I FIRE'd in 2015 and it has been an amazing experience. Sometimes I see videos on TH-cam explaining that FIRE is not possible for the average person, you'll be miserable, etc. It has been great for me and I don't think I will ever be able to work for someone else after experiencing how great life can be when I am in control of how my time is spent. I went for a hike next to the river this morning and lately I have been helping my elderly friend with a surgery and transition to assisted living facility. Stuff I would not have time for if I were working full time. I am getting into kayaking (both sea and whitewater) and I spend a lot of time exploring the outdoors. I leave home for weeks at a time exploring the western United States and sometimes internationally. I work on electronic and mechanical projects at home as a hobby, which is so much better than working as an engineer on projects I didn't care about and to a standard that I could not be proud of. When I was working a stressful job I had a brain problem that required surgery. I am convinced it was the stress that initiated that and it was the spark that got me interested in researching alternatives to working until I die. I think your channel could be stumbled upon by people in similar circumstances and it will help them realize they can achieve their goals too. So thanks for that.

    You're very accurate and realistic. I love that you show the real benefits of being independent / job free. That might also be the case when you're self employed, to a smaller degree. Having to "report" to someone is just awful and the fact you don't have paid sick leave when you're sick in America is mind blowing.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In America you can get sick days but many just combine sick and PTO together.

    • @TheSimArchitect
      @TheSimArchitect ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BeatTheBush Oh? But aren't paid sick days only for when you are sick and you have a letter from your doctor stating that officially? For example, let's say an employee breaks a bone and needs three weeks at home to heal. Or something else that might require longer time away from work. I heard of "sick days" as something like personal days you can take without notice when you "call in sick" but they seem to be very few (maybe a handful per year?). I was thinking that the problem you mention happens because you can't go to your doctor and take a doctor's statement to your HR requiring them to let you stay home for as long as necessary while being paid. That would prevent having people working ill. That's how it works back in Brazil, by the way (if you're an employee, 15 days full pay directly from your employer, the remaining by the government, the amount is calculated based on your average contribution for the past 5 years or so etc) and I believe it's the same in Europe.

      @@TheSimArchitect most companies are similar to that but with short staffing or unique responsibilities it is not always guaranteed u can take the time off. ya maybe they cannot legally fire you for taking ur PTO, but they can invent some other reason and reclassify it as not meeting responsibilities outlined in the job description. idk, to me the PTO and sick/vacation time is just an extra ~50-60 hrs that gets paid out to me as a christmas bonus. to some people with higher paying hourly jobs, thats an extra $5,000 at the end of the year. I cant think of very many hourly paying jobs that exceed my former pay rate of ~70$/hr. after that i think almost all jobs are salary or commission which i think is much more easy to take sick/pto/vacation so no one pays attention to that.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think owning a home has a high chance of working well but it's not a slam dunk depending on the home appreciation during the time you buy to selling it. Last 12 years of home ownership yielded about a 6% compounded annual gain so it's not bad. It's also a vehicle to help you save as many people with a large chunk of cash usually finds some way to spend it or invest it poorly.

    Before they changed the rules, this Fresno County employee put his sick and vacation time together and took two years off. When he returned, someone decided that his position wasn't needed so he was fired when he walked back in the door.

      @BeatTheBush  ปีที่แล้ว

      2 years? You have to save for 10 years of vacation for that? Maybe sick you can go up to 6 months for extended leave and perhaps without pay.

      @@BeatTheBush Fresno County had to a questionable way of calculating retirement and time off. The accounting system/policy was changed by a lawsuit by the retirement system. It was costing them too much.

    Can you do FIRE if you have kids?

    • @dissect123
      @dissect123 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Only if you are a woman.
      Tell your husband because you are a sagittarius you need to go and find yourself, taking the kids as well.
      Then you sue your husband for alimony and are set for life.

      I went from 36 hrs a week(full time) to part time (16 hrs a week). I work extra when ppl take fmla/pto. I have 2 kids. It is still more stress than I'd like when I pick up shifts, but otherwise it is ok. I'm not sure FIRE is a good way to go for me so I keep working so I can get healthcare benefits for my 2 kids and spouse. Otherwise I'd be paying twice as much under the obamacare plans for my family like 6000 dollars vs 12000 dollars. Sometimes I debate with myself if I should pay 6000 dollars more for freedom. BUT also that puts my spouse as the main bread winner. So if something were to happen then I am a bit out of practice. To sum up, part time is best for us/me b/c I get medical benefits, steady money(steady money is like crack), and a back up plan should one of us not be able to work.

      So I guess it is up to you how much risk you are able to tolerate. everyone is different. My parents freaked out when I told them I may not be a salaried employee so that's how I am not FIREd but parttime

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably but each kid requires about $500k-1M in additional assets to FIRE. Mayyyybe $250k if you're SUPER frugal in raising the kid.
