For those who didn't get that far in the video, it's because it's a real bummer of a segment since I straight up don't like Orb Origin Saga. Not wanting the video to get depressing after praising the first season, I opted to cut it from the final version.
origin saga was honestly ok but not fantastic. my only take is im glad i got to see why juggler spent almost 800 years trolling gai. along with that the dynamic you mentioned between them was the only part i liked as well. the only part i honestly revisit is the final part of orb origin when gai goes back to O-50 and he has that moment where he realizes that he's lost a friend. that part hits me hard every time.
Stay out of my ultra lawn you ultra lame no good barbarians back in my day we will respect our ultra old people not annoy them Blazer:go back to sleep unc
I really like Orb, it's one of my favorite Ultra shows. I like that Grand King makes a return (even though it's not the Showa one) and I think it's cool Orb wasn't strong enough to defeat it, he had to make Maga Grand King shoot at his shield and redirect it back to him. Maga-Orochi I like it so much, but his evolved form I find it goofy, to me it looks like a ball with a crocodile like head.
Orb as a series will always have a special place in my heart. It's cliche to say but when I was depressed, forced to grow up and my family and friends told be to be mature, it was the worst times for me. When I first watched Orb I connected to Gai and he became a role model for me. Accepting yourself even if you or everyone around you didn't. Embrace who you are and move forward. Orb is such an icon to me and I'll never forget that
I like Orb more than X, though I can understand some people not liking more serial shows. I've loved Orb, Geed, Z and Blazar with Arc starting off good. Some fans say that Ultraman NEEDS an attack team and I disagree with that. Some shows they felt forced in like Ace and 80. There are some great attack team casts like Z, Ultraseven and Blazar. But I love that it got shaken up by Orb's team being kaiju storm chasers. It was due to budget it sounds like but it worked really well. Hell Geed has one of my favorite casts too. Basically some humans and aliens band together to be heroes...with Pega being the most normal one.
I was planning to watch Orb at some point! And also Z, because I'm a sucker for hot-blooded mecha action. This has reinforced my decision. Good to know it's genuinely enjoyable.
I actually really liked watching Orb transformations for how cool they were, the imagery, the sounds, I don’t think I got tired of them. The Taro and Belial ones were my favs.
Looking extremely forward to the Ultra Q: Dark Fantasy, one of my favorite and equally underrated entries. I know a lot of people hate the series because of its lack of proper kaiju but, for me personally, it captures the imagenitive spirit of classic anthology shows (OG Twilight Zone, Monsters, Amazing Stories, OG Outer Limits) far better than modern revivals and similar examples, especially with its range of tones and story ending.
Orb was my entry point into modern Ultra and its been my go-to for recommending an entry point for people because Gai has big 9th/10th Doctor energy and "Japanese Doctor Who" seems about as valid a description of this show as the Ultra Q/Twilight Zone analogy.
I spent way too long looking for a sound bit of the Harmonica to use as my ringtone years ago Also I think its because my introduction to Juggler is Ultraman Z but I really liked how evil he was, its not just a "Ragh evil is evil" to me but also a melancholic look at what he was like before he became the total meme lord that he is in the future after he got over his emo phase😂
I don't binge watch Orb as much as other seasons, but this show definitely has some of my favorite moments of any Ultraman series and I love how much certain plot points are forshadowed and built up to.
Great review. Although I haven't seen the series I do have the film on bluray which I enjoyed. The Ultra 7 name drop was great even for me being a casual fan
tbh I didnt know Orb origin wasnt liked so much until I got more into the ultra franchise. At the time I just got into the series with Geed being my first show & Orb being my second and to this day still my favorite. Im into rider more so at that time I didnt know what to expect from an ultra series so when I watched origin saga I had a fun time with it and it made really wanna watch Gaia (which I eventually did amazing show). I remembered really liking Gai & Juggler's dynamic in origin, I could see the seeds to their eventual split in the main season and the unhinge but complexity of Juggler's character. Loved Fujimiya talk with Juggler as its the reason I wanted to check out Gaia but now in retrospect watching both series its great delve in the maturity of Fujimiya trying to reach out to a younger ver of himself that he sees in Juggler. Maybe I need a rewatch of origin but from what I remembered it was a fun ultra side story that got me more curious to watch more from the ultra series.
Love the series, and completely agree about the series best episode being the one with the cafe. Great review. I enjoyed Origin Saga. Yeah, it wasn't perfect. Much more fan-servicey given all of the other Ultras involved. Getting chapters 2-5 could have been a masterpiece, but we'll never know. Gai and Juggler are still two of my favorite characters in the franchise.
I actually dig the toy transformation stuff in Orb. It's way more fun to watch repeatedly than stuff like Geed or R/B imo. Idk, the cards, "fusion up!", sword spinning and harmonica just rub my brain good
@@Irrelevant402 R/B had the problem of having a long transformation for two characters, one after the other. At least they noticed about halfway through that was brain meltingly annoying and had them play at the same time (and I feel like even sped up a bit)

Hi, Gorudan! Been watching your wonderful Ultra retrospectives, which sparked an interest in the series, in fact just yesterday I watched the first episode of the original series! Thanks a lot for your content, it's been inspiring me to (hopefully) do a retrospective series on the Super Robot Wars and helping me throgh some hard times. Keep up the good work!
According to some sources I came across, Orb's early concepts began as a nod to Edogawa Rampo's detective stories with Gai being similar based on Rampo's detective hero Kogoro Akechi, the SSP were supposed to be based on the Boy Detectives Club, a kid detective group who assisted Akechi in his cases and Juggler originally being based on Akechi's archnemesis, the master criminal the Fiend with Twenty Faces. Honestly, a detective style Ultraman series sounds interesting, especially since some installments do have a detective element to them especially the early Showa era shows. In a way the SSP felt like a nod to Ultra Q's reporter team protagonists.
Orb is basically the equivalent of Power Ranger Dino Charges for New Generation Ultra at that time, mainly due to both Orb and Dino Charge being the only gem in posibbly one of the worst era of their respective franchise at least toward the more older fans that is, until Z came in and somehow manage to surpassed Orb in term of quality (Yes you might be asking, what about Geed, that show is good to?. I mean i agree, but back when it first aired i remember how the show recieved so much backlash from the fans due to how the show reused the fusion gimmick that Orb introduced combined with how the show's storyline was basically continuing the whole Zero vs Belial stuff, which isn't suprised considering how a lot of fans are just tire with Zero returning over & over again in all of New Generation Ultra seasons at that time. I feel like people didn't really like Geed until Riku's return in Z where most people start to look back at that show in a more positive light)
I've noticed there's kind of a different narratives among Ultraman fans depending on when they started watching where they're either pretty negative and see all the New Generation shows get seen through the lens of Ginga, or else sort of see X, Orb, and Geed as sort of the "real beginning" of the New Generation. It does kind of amount to "who was around at the beginning vs who's going back and watching the 'good parts'". So it's interesting to hear about how people mostly liked Geed in retrospect, since I mostly know about that show from people who watched it after it was done
@@vicentemarizvieira9469 yes it's good. But AS far quality goes, it's more of your standard ultra flick show. In a way i fell like a lot of fans opinion on X is that, it's "Ginga but better". Again, X is basically Taguchi's first work on Ultraman, until he start to went all out with Orb. I feel like there's a reason why Aizen from R/B end up being an Orb fan. Given that the guy supposed to be a jab toward an elitist ultra fan, i fell like Tsuburaya & Takasue kinda aware on how Orb being the only New Gen Ultra that older fan like the most despite both X & Geed being good.
This was my first Ultraman show and one that kinda spoiled me for exactly how I want Ultraman to be, honestly. We have an Ultraman that talks, and doesn't have a separation between the human and Ultra forms. We also have a grounded main cast that aren't a formal, scifi military team. I know it's the main thing of the series but it's refreshing to have a more Ultra Q approach (which is why I'm really liking Arc). And yeah I've been trying to get through Orb Origin Saga for a bit now but it's a slog. Good on them for doing something different but it's just not for me. I'm surprised to hear about all their plans. Makes sense though, with it being the 50th anniversary. I wonder why they haven't done them elsewhere, like in books or animation.
Oh, here we go, best Ultra series coming up next! As for Orb, I never really got into it as much as most. Maybe it's because I watched Origin Saga first, but I found the character disconnect between that show and Orb proper to be really offputting. Juggler was just left in a more interesting place as a character after the prequel than where he started in Orb, and I never properly warmed to him; if I want an amusing villain that chews every speck of scenery he comes across I'll just watch R/B. It also took almost the entire show for me to warm to the SSP. They felt 2-dimensionally goofy for too long, and the show was almost done before they felt fleshed out. Doesn't help that their most prominent member was reduced to peril monkey more often than not. I guess if I want a fun goofy protag team I'd gravitate more toward Taro.
I do think, in terms of its legacy, Orb is arguably very important to Ultra as its the show that codified the format that almost all the New Gen shows going forward would follow. It's the first show with the current 25 episode count which we currently still have. The way it handled and introduced its forms would be the standard that most of the New Gen shows would follow. Juggler would serve as a template for how most of New Gen would handle its primary villain. I do think however that Orb sort of suffers in retrospect as I think all the shows that came after would handle its format better. That said, there's definitely still a lot of things to like about Orb. Gai is a unique Ultra protagonist and his relationship with Juggler is a standout aspect in New Gen. There's still a number of great episodes like the ones highlighted in the video. Personally for me, the Thunder Breastar vs Maga Orochi battle is still one of the most visceral fight scenes I've seen in modern Ultra, like I kinda just feel bad for Maga Orochi during that whole fight.
Something I think is weird is the Official English translation for Maoju is now Lord Monster but previously it was Demon King Beast cause Mao translates to demon king (I know demon lord too) I don't know why it got changed Demon King Beast sounds way cooler than just Lord Monster (at least to me)
>>Me: Oh man that retrospective on Ultraman X, I can't wait for the next one >>ZaGourdan: Hey enjoy the release right next after X I'M NOT USE TO YOU JUST DROPPED FREQUENT ULTRA RETROSPECTIVES THIS QUICKLY.
Yeah, Jugglus Juggler is not only threatening because he basically creates all the major kaijus, but because even without the kaiju, he is still a pretty big threat to Orb. If Juggler were to play his cards right (pun intended), he definitely could’ve won against Orb. Also, I really hate the recap episodes in Ultraman. It’s really not needed, considering Ultraman shows nowadays only have 25 episodes, which isn’t a lot to remember. Either they make the episodes with super important information very interesting & worth rewatching, or they just recap previous events when needed, not whenever. "Hey, remember how Arc defeated a Shagong, an ancient buried forest monster, digelos, an electro-rat monster, a monster that creates salt water, & multiple shagongs" would be enough recap for anyone.
If I had a nickel for everytime a Kamen rider villain actor went on to play the main Ultraman character, I would have to nickel. Which isn’t much but it’s weird that’s happened twice.
I like everything about Orb that doesnt involve the human characters. I felt the Something Search People and whatever the name of the defense force was in the show was very weak and honestly drew me away from the show originally. I always like it when the human characters are just as important with the monster battles along with Ultraman and having them be characters I dont care for or not have any characters from the actual defense force aside from the uncle. Like everything involving Gai just being by himself or his storyline with Juggler is honestly the best but the humans were not my cup of tea. Which is also why I much preferred Orb Origin. Because it had everything I liked and nothing that I didnt
Oh yeah Thunder Breaster slicing off Maga's tail and hitting him with it was raw as heck. I feel like ZaGorudan can't complain about a final form, in this case true form, being over designed because...Orb Origin is too boring! I think Z has the best final form of all the New Gen Ultras that form just sparks!
@@rusty2304 I mean I appreciate that he was so broken he couldn't obtain his true more powerful form. So to make up for it he has the fusions. Just that his final form could use a few tweaks to look cooler.

5:09 I see......
Missed opportunity for orb to not do an spinning ball attack like Ultraman 80
Just finished Orb. I disliked most of it, except the Babalou and Galactron episodes. Those were bangers.
Missed opportunity for orb to not do an orb attack like Ultraman 80
If I had a nickel for everytime a Kamen rider villain actor went on to play the main Ultraman character, I would have to nickel. Which isn’t much but it’s weird that’s happened twice.
The first two Ultramen were villains in Kamen Rider shows, ironically enough
Can you do the retrospective of Ultraman Dyna please?
20:08 EVOLTO!!!!
GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED

I like everything about Orb that doesnt involve the human characters. I felt the Something Search People and whatever the name of the defense force was in the show was very weak and honestly drew me away from the show originally. I always like it when the human characters are just as important with the monster battles along with Ultraman and having them be characters I dont care for or not have any characters from the actual defense force aside from the uncle.
Like everything involving Gai just being by himself or his storyline with Juggler is honestly the best but the humans were not my cup of tea.
Which is also why I much preferred Orb Origin. Because it had everything I liked and nothing that I didnt
i need someone review darkness heels :v
Do dyna next please
Can you please do an ultra retrospective of ultraman dyna
Can you do a review of breaking bad... It's related I swear
Whens the r/b review
Oh yeah Thunder Breaster slicing off Maga's tail and hitting him with it was raw as heck.
I feel like ZaGorudan can't complain about a final form, in this case true form, being over designed because...Orb Origin is too boring! I think Z has the best final form of all the New Gen Ultras that form just sparks!
because orb origin is his base form that's why its boring
@@rusty2304 I mean I appreciate that he was so broken he couldn't obtain his true more powerful form. So to make up for it he has the fusions. Just that his final form could use a few tweaks to look cooler.
orb origin is peak
