    Well done! Awesome video thank you very much. It saved me a few hours of searching online. I have a self modded 550d and was struggling to decide which scope to get. I was hesitating between this one and the WO z61. I think I'll choose this one as the saving compared to the WO scope could buy me the auto guiding gear :) thanks again .

    Very enjoyable review. Ive been looking at getting a small refractor I could use on my Orion XHD Tripod and Manfrodo mvh500ah Fluid Head with my older Nikon D70 . Looking to do some observing and Astrophotography. Listing the additional accessories will be handy if placing an order for all the items together. Moving on to the next video now.

    regarding the field flattener, i bought a 72ed camera rotator then an ovl flattener no reducer, which screws into the rotator then to my altair astro 183c pro tec it works well

    Wait, the Evostar 72ED comes in the box upside down? I bought mine used and the previous owner had it right side up... and the ¼"-20 screw had also punctured the top of the case (while in his possession). I ended up recutting the styrofoam and moving some around to let it sit on the bottom of the case on the dovetail bar (it sort of sits simultaneously on the dovetail bar and on the tube cutouts, which is good).
    There are some other quirks I've found with 72ED.
    My plate-solving software comes up with an actual focal length around 432 mm, making it exactly an f/6. With the so-called 0.85x reducer/flattener, it comes out to 375 mm (f/5.2), so it's rather closer to a 0.87x reducer. I have the 72ED field flattener but rather than a threaded connection to the scope it uses a 2" barrel (itself threaded into the flattener), yet what appears on the website is something different again. I suspect my copy is an earlier iteration. There's quite a bit of weight being carried on the two drawtube set screws so I'm not entirely happy with it. The drawtube threading is M54f and that of the flattener is M56f, so an M54m-M56m adapter ring would be needed, which is what I suspect you have.
    The ideal focuser position with the flattener is with the drawtube about ¼" out but in that position so the scope can't be placed in the box. So I cut some more styrofoam.
    I had previously bought another used Sky-Watcher telescope and that seller had supplied it with two finderscopes, one of which was a 6x30, which is a nice size for the 72ED (comes in real handy when using it on the Star Adventurer with an astrocamera). But it turns out that the finderscope shoe was placed on top of a set screw (I can see the same thing on yours) which causes the finderscope to sit proud and be hopelessly ill-aimed, so I had to grind and file away some of the shoe to get it to sit properly on the scope. I also had to cut yet more styrofoam in the box to make room for the 6x30 finderscope and its bracket.

    Hi Nick I've been a 'silent subscriber' for a while now and love the simple approach of your videos although your more recent guiding videos lost me 😁. I bought the Skywatcher Star Adventurer Pro last year and have only used it with an unmodified Nikon D500 and 200-500mm lens which is really pushing the mount. I'm now looking at getting a small refractor so this is on my shortlist but there are a few others in the mix (William Optics Zenithstar 61 and the Sharpstar 61 EDPH ii) would you still recommend this Skywatcher Evostar 72ED Pro over the other ones? Any advantages / disadvantages of getting the 80ED version? I will more than likely be using both the D500 and my Fuji XT3 on the scope

    • @AstroExploring
      @AstroExploring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul, thanks for being a long time subscriber! The 80ED would be too big for the Star Adventurer in my opinion. The mount also has a 4KG weight limit so you need to bear that in mind. The biggest advantage that the 72ED has over the other 2 is focal length, though I don’t think that’s a huge issue at this focal length. The other thing to think about is cost, the 72ED is cheaper so if budget is tight then that’s the one to go for. Also bear in mind that you’ll need to buy a field flattener so that will add to the overall cost. If it was my money then I’d go for the WO scope but that’s my personal preference, if budget is tighter then the Sky-Watcher is the one to go for

    Hello Astro Exploring! I have been using Skywatcher Ed80/600 from 2019. Do you know if is any difference from the reducer/corrector for the Ed80 and the one made for the Ed72 besides the adapter? I am considering buying the Ed72 and using my reducer/corrector for the Ed80. I also notice that Ed72 it can be find at two prices, the Ds pro is the new version? If there are two models do you know what is the difference between the older model and this one?

    • @AstroExploring
      @AstroExploring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have the budget then the ED80 would be the better choice, more focal length and it’s a bit heavier. I find my ED72 is a little light for the HEQ5 without any guiding equipment so balance is challenging

    Hi Nick, Just watching your videos and they have been a great help as I am just about to buy my first astrophotography equipment. I am going to buy the Sky watcher 72ED DS-pro scope and the star adventurer pro star tracker package.
    My question to you is do I really need a mount like you have used in your videos as well? (EQ5 pro).
    All to be used with a Nikon d750 full frame camera which is great in low light. Also I have some professional lenses which I also hope to use and wondered if I really need the scope (and buy one at a later date with more magnification)or will my existing camera lenses suffice? Sorry to bombard you but your set up seems almost identical to what I have decided to buy so would appreciate any advice

    • @AstroExploring
      @AstroExploring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Colin. I’m glad the videos have been a help. If this is your first venture into astrophotography and you already have some good quality lenses then you might want to try using those before buying a 72ED. It doesn’t matter what mount you have as long as it can track the sky. The great thing about the Star Adventurer is that it’s cheap and portable so it opens up the hobby to a lot more people. See how you get on with the kit you have, then consider upgrading to a 72ED or similar depending on the results you get 😊

  • @jamesw5713
    @jamesw5713 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice review. Been thinking of getting one of these for deep sky objects, but getting the impression this scope is a false economy because it seems like you have to spend 2/3rds the OTA price on a field flattener to make it work for its intended use (astrophotography), so at 2021 prices you are talking £300 for the OTA and £200 for the FF. Do all refractors of this type require a field flattener?

    • @AstroExploring
      @AstroExploring  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The OVL flattener is cheaper, assuming it’s in stock. A FF is always required with a refractor. You can get away without one but you’ll need the backspace for focusing anyway so might as well buy one rather than just spacers

    Found your channel trough searching for astro in YT, very interesting, have been watching a few of your video's now
    One thing I am wondering though is way you to reduce the focal range if you only have 400mm, for example 400mm is not enough to photograph the Orion nebula in full frame ?
    I have been doing some astro photography, just starting deep sky photography now but just for now using my Canon 600mm f4 L IS + 1 Dx mkII cameras and taking a whole lot of very short exposures because I don't have a mount yet, looking for one that can handle the amount of weight that I have ..... any idea ?

    • @AstroExploring
      @AstroExploring  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My telescope focal length is 420mm, I use a 0.85 reducer but with a crop sensor DSLR which gives a total of 571mm and Orion Nebula looks great in my field of view 👍🏻 I don’t know the weight of that lens but have a look at the Star Adventurer 2i. The first version which I have had a payload capacity of 4KG, which should be enough for a long lens and DSLR as I’ve used my telescope on it. You’ll just need a study tripod that can take that weight 👍🏻 after that you’re really looking at HEQ5 or EQ6R for astrophotography mounts, but you might find a deal for a second hand one

    • @siegfriednoet
      @siegfriednoet 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AstroExploring Thanx for the info, I forgot about the 1.6 crop factor of your camera.
      Will look at that mount you mentioned, Star Adventurer 2i, but I guess it won't hold the load.
      I want to keep it easy to carry or to take with me, I Think in that regard the HEQ5Pro will be a bit to heavy.
      Pity that there isn't a mount between those.
      Sturdy tripod is not a problem, I have been using one whole the time now with the 600 or 1200mm lens (2x extender)
      Will look out in the future to buy a telescope but still unsure in what kind I would by for astrophotography

    Hi Nick. Just to let you know I've got this little telescope now as it was delivered just after 10am this morning. Wow what can I say? I'm going to have lots of fun with this little telescope and many deep sky objects I'm planning to photograph when night sky gets darker again. Telescope feel very good and well made plus solid enough. It's small and very portable which I like so much about it! Weight of scope is ideal for backpack without case. The case it comes with it feels very nice and foam padding keeps it from moving around in side. I'm impressed with this little telescope!!! Thanks so much for helping me decide on this telescope and I just can't wait to the night sky gets darker again! Is there a light pollution filter for scope? Thanks so much for helping me!!!

      No problem at all, glad you like it! The focus tube is a 2 inch so as long as you have the threads and adapters in the right place you can use any 2 inch filter, or buy a clip in version if you’re using a DSLR, which is what I do

      As long as you have 55mm of back spacing you should be able to achieve focus with a T-adaptor and T- ring. I’m not sure what the results would look like as I’ve always used a flattener but you could certainly try as it’s a much cheaper solution! I know you can also achieve focus by using a diagonal -> Barlow -> t-ring -> DSLR but again I’m not sure what quality the images are but I’m sure they’d be fine
