Kenya's Oldest Inmate Speaks

For over forty years James Weru Mureithi has lived within the confines of Naivasha and kamiti Maximum Security Prisons. Sentenced to death in 1974 for killing a friend, Mureithi has lived through the anguish of a never ending wait for the hangman. But as Michael Njenga reports there is hope for Mureithi and others like him following the creation of the power of mercy committee which reviews such cases for possible release.

The Correction centres (prisons) are places for reforming and rehabilitating offenders. Once an offender has reformed, has acknowledged the crime he committed and atoned for the offence, is considred to have repaid his debt to society and poses no threat to public safety it is only fair to give such a person a second chance.
