    You guys are awesome. So glad I found this video. I have a 2021 Suntour Raidon fork that has the same issue with the rebound knob and it drives me friggin' crazy!! What do you think about super gluing the hex bar to the red rebound knob so that it doesn't slip out? Not that I need to adjust the rebound often, but it is really annoying.

    I fixed the bottom damper adjuster problem, by hard resin gluing the cap to the hex shaft. Worked well enough. I know the internals of these forks pretty well. You get what you pay for. These don't match up to a comparable Rockshock. But then the price is way lower. If you are riding really Janky trails with rock gardens, I wont depend on these to last long. An occasional step down or a jump wont hurt.

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did the same just with basic super glue. Been good since. I actually have a 2 year update video on my Raidon fork coming out in the next day or two in which I go over that and other things.

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @jayf2487
      @jayf2487 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Down to Ride MTB ya I’m thinking of just keeping my talon. Would you still recommend these forks the most in the 300 dollar range? The only other two I was looking at out the rockshox recon and the manitou markour but haven’t ridden an air fork before.

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jason Falasco I currently have a Rockshox Recon on my Rift Zone. I think the Suntour Raidon and Epixon had just as good ride quality of not better. I wish I still had my old bike to compare head to head. But the Recon definitely has some stiction in the first range of motion meaning it’s not great at smoothing small bumps. However Rockshox is king so if you need it serviced by a local shop then everyone will be familiar with the Recon and be able to get parts easily. I don’t have any personal experience with the Markhor. I do know it’s the lightest of the group and that arch design of the Manitou forks just makes a lot of sense. To be honest, I’m not sure you can really go wrong with any of them.

    • @jayf2487
      @jayf2487 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok that’s what I figured, one more question haha does your buddy still have his talon with the epixon because I might go with that fork and if so he had to buy the adapter for the tapered head tube right? I’ve never installed a fork before but doesn’t look to hard, I would have to do it myself since all bike shops are closed and I just wasn’t sure since my 18 talon 2 doesn’t have a tapered tube

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      jason Falasco the epixon was available with a straight steerer at that time. Not sure if it still is though but I think it is. In terms of installation, you’ll need a star nut, you’ll need to transfer over the crown race and you’ll need to cut down the steerer. There are specialty tools for all those things but you can probably get by with basic tools.

  • @michaelsoutherland3023

    • @michaelsoutherland3023
      @michaelsoutherland3023 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And to make it even more interesting there's speed lock and then just a normal hydrolic lock... I think only the speed lock is meant for compression adjustment, my XCR without speed lock has a very on/off kind of feel. My first fork was the M3030 pogo stick deluxe, so adjustment knobs are new to me.
      Ever use an air fork or hydrologic brakes in below freezing weather ? Ive stuck to coil fork and mechanical brakes assuming better year round/all weather reliability.

    Is the Epixon straight steerer? I have a Giant Talon 2 as well and was interested in the replacement. Was it a direct drop in or did you need to purchase anything else to make it fit? thanks,

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Epixon has a straight steerer. You’ll need a starfangled nut. You’ll also have to cut the steerer tube down to the length needed for your bike and transfer over the crown race. If you’re not comfortable doing all that, any decent bike shop could do it for probably pretty cheap.

    Sorry if I missed it, but did your buddy increase the travel on the Epixon on his Talon 2? I have the same bike and just ordered the Epixon fork. Just wondering if the extra travel really messed with the bikes geometry.

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He did not. I did on my old bike that was originally 100mm travel and it felt fine to me. Your results may vary. You might want to check Giant forums or Facebook groups. Also, I ran the pressure slightly lower so that it had a little more sag making it a little less that 20mm or real life difference.

  • @AntonyJohn71
    @AntonyJohn71 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The problem I have with the older epixon is that the rebound damper is a sealed cartridge. The damper over time starts getting harder and restricts travel! It is like it is in lockout mode. So I cut one damaged damper open. There is no gas in it but an oil like any other air fork. The oil gets all thick due to aluminum deposits from friction and heat. It leads to the damper seizing up. Suntour has to do something about this. Since replacing the damper is relatively expensive. I think there is a serviceable damper that is available now, so we change oil in it periodically.

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the info. Pretty sure the new Epixon forks have serviceable dampers. Raidon forks do not though, which is bad news for me but at least I’ll know what happening when it gets to that point.

    • @Andrea-qg5yk
      @Andrea-qg5yk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the damper also ingests some grease/sludge (depending on how often you service your fork) from the lowers and gets overfilled. If you go on the "Raidon service parts" section of Suntour's website you'll find there is also the (older) Epixon damper, which should mean it's compatible with Raidon forks. That damper is not only fully serviceable, but also has a LORC option with rebound, lockout and LSC. pretty great.

    My sr suntour epixon holds air fine but when I'm pumping it up with my cheap 120psi (not much compared to others) shock pump it starts leaking air until I remove the pump. When the pump is removed it's fine again, but this means I can only get about 60psi in it. Is this because of my cheap shock pump not being able to hold the pressure back

    • @downtoridemtb
      @downtoridemtb  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sound to me like a leak from the shock pump or a bad seal where the pump connects to the valve. Check for any missing rubber grommets that might have been inside the “nozzle” of the shock pump. Or try another shock pump if you can. You could also try some soapy water to see where the air is escaping. It’ll make little bubbles.

      @@downtoridemtb English is not my strong side so sorry for my weird sentences. :) The answer is in the end of this comment but I write the whole reassembly procedure of the knob for the viewers if they are interested about it. Before tighten the bigger bolt, make sure you set the rebound with an allen key about halfway in its "travel", or at least two full rotations from the full opened state, towards to the close direction. (If you tighten the big bolt when the rebound is fully opened, you cant turn the red knob either direction and cause to strip its plastic 4mm socket) Then put back the little hex shaped rod into the red knob, but dont push it fully towards the end, leave 3-4mm free in the knob. Then put back carefully the knob in its place. The little rod should move up and down with the inner bolt together when you set the rebound. Thats why doesnt seems long enough for the first sight. Its pretty easy and straightfoward, but can looks as a design flaw for the first time. You can grease the O-ring and the rod itself to make it slick and more waterproof.. If you want to make some DIY work, cut an unused allen key to slightly longer than the factroy one and make a video about it. If it works, would be a great hack video, but reassembling the right way is still much more easy :) Cheers guys
